Usually we write you with good news. This time it's much more mixed.

Help Plan a "Vigil For Survival"

Mid-way through the climate talks in Copenhagen, people around the world will
gather in solemn solidarity with the nations and peoples for whom delay on
climate action could mean extinction. Can you help plan a vigil?

What: A candlelight vigil.

Why: To send a clear message to world leaders deciding the fate of the planet's
future.

Where: Somewhere in your community that is iconic (beautiful and picturesque) or
strategic (like U.S. Senate offices, consulates, and embassies)

When: The night of Friday, December 11th or Saturday December 12th.

Who: You, your family, friends, neighbors and people all over the world.

Earlier this week Barack Obama and the leaders of some other large nations
announced that they weren't going to reach any kind of legally binding climate
agreement in Copenhagen--declaring that they need more time, despite the five
years of preparation they've already had.

That's sad and it's dangerous--the planet is running out of 'next years'. But it
does give all of us more time to organize a movement to make them respect the
science.

So it's time for the next big steps. The world needs your help once more.

There's a global mobilization coming together for the weekend in the middle of
the Copenhagen conference--Dec. 11-13. Our collective message? "The World Wants
a Real Deal" -- people all over the planet are demanding a binding global
climate agreement guided by the latest science and built upon principles of
justice and equity.

There will be big rallies on Saturday the 12th in many cities, and on Sunday the
13th communities of faith the world over will ring church bells, beat drums,
blow horns -- all 350 times.

Our main hope is that you will help organize a candlelight vigil at some iconic
or strategic place near you on Friday or Saturday night, December 11th or 12th?
Around the world people will gather to light lanterns or candles, in solemn
solidarity with the citizens of those nations who will be first to face the
challenges to their very survival.

Eventually all of us will be hard-pressed by rising seas, spreading drought, and
temperatures too hot for growing food. But right now--this year, this
decade--there are countries being pressed to the brink. They're at the forefront
of a fight for real change in Copenhagen, and need your help to amplify their
voices.

As Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed said last week at a summit of the most
vulnerable nations:

"We will not sign a global suicide pact, in Copenhagen or anywhere."

Instead, he and the other nations called for a "survival pact," for commitments
by the developed world to cut emissions enough to get the atmospheric
concentration of CO2 back to 350. They know the simple, mathematical truth of
global warming: 350=Survival.

Some of the planned candlelight vigils will take place at iconic places in
communities all over the world. Others will be outside American consulates and
embassies, and at senators' offices throughout the United States. Partly this is
because the US is, historically, the country most responsible for the carbon in
the world's atmosphere. But it's also because America, if it chose, could lead
the way to a sane global climate policy. The election of Barack Obama ended
America's automatic veto on progress--but the U.S. is still offering
insufficient actions, far short of what scientists say is necessary. And Obama
has yet to offer the leadership the crisis requires.

In a very real sense, the short-term survival of many nations, and the long-term
health of the whole planet, rests in the hands of Obama and the United States
Senate. Their positions, along with the level of leadership provided by the
European Union, China and a few other nations, can make or break a global
climate treaty. The decisions made by this small group of people will, in large
part, determine whether or not the world forges a real deal--not just any deal,
but one that is strong enough to pull us back from the brink of climate
catastrophe and put the planet on a path to 350. Their courage--or lack of
it--will help set the future of the planet for geologic time.

The candles we will light are candles of hope.

Despite its best efforts, the McCain camp's sneering attacks are not proving that Barack Obama is not like the rest of us. They are proving that John McCain is not like the rest of us. Americans are hungry for a serious conversation about the multiple crises we are facing. And by ignoring that conversation in favor of yet another round of fear-mongering, McCain is showing himself to be the candidate who is "not a man who sees America like you and I see America."

Camp Obama

Just got back from a day and a half at Camp Obama. The camp was a great help in kick-starting me into high gear in terms of getting involved with this campaign. I have joined my local group and look forward to meeting others who are inspired by this man. If I know you, beware, I'll be tracking you down and asking for you to also join in the fun. We have several trips scheduled to Las Vegas, Nevada. That right, your heard me Las Vegas, the city of sin where we are going to hopefully convince some of those lucky people to take a break from there everyday activities and seriously consider voting for our candidate. It should be a good time, and anyone interested is invited to join in by attending a camp-Obama session and then committing to having a good time. If your not already registered here on this site, I urge you to do so and become part of the next big thing.

Foodie Dictionary

Feeling lost in the lingo of food issues? Here are a few key definitions to help demystify foodie jargon:
Slow Food—A countermovement to fast food, created in 1989 and that seeks to raise awareness of where our food is grown and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
100-mile Diet—Challenges participants to eat only foods grown within a 100-mile radius of where they live. That's right—if the salt and pepper in those shakers came from outside that distance, they aren't going on your food.
Locavore—Someone who commits himself or herself to buying and eating locally, often using the 100-mile-diet guidelines. Locavores believe that less processing and shipping leads to more nutritious, eco-friendly, and tasty food.
Fair Trade—A consumer-led movement that makes efforts to fairly compensate farmers in developing countries for the time and resources spent growing and producing goods.
Organic—Label given to goods grown and/or produced within a list of monitored guidelines (e.g., no use of any artificial fertilizers or chemicals).
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)—An organism whose DNA structure has been altered or modified in some way. Today there is a growing debate over the safety and environmental effects caused by genetically engineered foods.

Why Are Food Prices So High?
Food prices have risen 45 percent since the end of 2006. Experts say many factors have propelled increasing costs, including:
1) Rising oil and energy prices have affected all levels of the food production chain, from fertilizer costs to harvesting, transporting, and processing food.
2) There has been strong food demand from emerging economies, especially India and China.
3) Rising biofuel production adds to the demand for corn. Almost half the increase in consumption of major food crops in 2007 was related to biofuels, mostly because of corn-based ethanol production in the U.S.
4) Some major exporting countries have introduced export taxes, bans, or other restrictions on exports of agricultural products.
5) Drought conditions in major wheat-producing countries (e.g., Australia and Ukraine) and flooding in the midwestern U.S. have ruined crops and left supplies low while demand is higher than ever.

Barbra Streisand has changed her tune in the presidential campaign. It wasn't long ago that the Oscar-winning actress and singer called Hillary Rodham Clinton the next president of the United States. On Tuesday, with Clinton out of the race and now supporting Obama, Streisand endorsed him, too.

"Barack has awakened in many of us the notion that we can again be hopeful," Streisand said in a statement posted on her Web site.

"For Barack, hope, change, believe -- they are not just words. They are tangible ideas that make up the blueprint to building a better America for all of us," she said.

I find I'm having this discussion, this weird little debate, more and more, with colleagues, with readers, with liberals and moderates and miserable, deeply depressed Republicans and spiritually amped persons of all shapes and stripes and I'm having it in particular with those who seem confused, angry, unsure, thoroughly nonplussed, as they all ask me the same thing: What the hell's the big deal about Obama?

I, of course, have an answer. Sort of.

Warning: If you are a rigid pragmatist/literalist, itchingly evangelical, a scowler, a doubter, a burned-out former '60s radical with no hope left, or are otherwise unable or unwilling to parse alternative New Age speak, click away right now, because you ain't gonna like this one little bit.

Ready? It goes likes this:

Barack Obama isn't really one of us. Not in the normal way, anyway.

This is what I find myself offering up more and more in response to the whiners and the frowners and to those with broken or sadly dysfunctional karmic antennae - or no antennae at all - to all those who just don't understand and maybe even actively recoil against all this chatter about Obama's aura and feel and MLK/JFK-like vibe.

To them I say, all right, you want to know what it is? The appeal, the pull, the ethereal and magical thing that seems to enthrall millions of people from all over the world, that keeps opening up and firing into new channels of the culture normally completely unaffected by politics?

No, it's not merely his youthful vigor, or handsomeness, or even inspiring rhetoric. It is not fresh ideas or cool charisma or the fact that a black president will be historic and revolutionary in about a thousand different ways. It is something more. Even Bill Clinton, with all his effortless, winking charm, didn't have what Obama has, which is a sort of powerful luminosity, a unique high-vibration integrity.

Dismiss it all you like, but I've heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who've been intuitively blown away by Obama's presence - not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence - to say it's just a clever marketing ploy, a slick gambit carefully orchestrated by hotshot campaign organizers who, once Obama gets into office, will suddenly turn from perky optimists to vile soul-sucking lobbyist whores, with Obama as their suddenly evil, cackling overlord.

Here's where it gets gooey. Many spiritually advanced people I know (not coweringly religious, mind you, but deeply spiritual) identify Obama as a Lightworker, that rare kind of attuned being who has the ability to lead us not merely to new foreign policies or health care plans or whatnot, but who can actually help usher in a new way of being on the planet, of relating and connecting and engaging with this bizarre earthly experiment. These kinds of people actually help us evolve. They are philosophers and peacemakers of a very high order, and they speak not just to reason or emotion, but to the soul.

The unusual thing is, true Lightworkers almost never appear on such a brutal, spiritually demeaning stage as national politics. This is why Obama is so rare. And this why he is so often compared to Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., to those leaders in our culture whose stirring vibrations still resonate throughout our short history.

Are you rolling your eyes and scoffing? Fine by me. But you gotta wonder, why has, say, the JFK legacy lasted so long, is so vital to our national identity? Yes, the assassination canonized his legend. The Kennedy family is our version of royalty. But there's something more. Those attuned to energies beyond the literal meanings of things, these people say JFK wasn't assassinated for any typical reason you can name. It's because he was just this kind of high-vibration being, a peacemaker, at odds with the war machine, the CIA, the dark side. And it killed him.

Now, Obama. The next step. Another try. And perhaps, as Bush laid waste to the land and embarrassed the country and pummeled our national spirit into disenchanted pulp and yet ironically, in so doing has helped set the stage for an even larger and more fascinating evolutionary burp, we are finally truly ready for another Lightworker to step up.

Let me be completely clear: I'm not arguing some sort of utopian revolution, a big global group hug with Obama as some sort of happy hippie camp counselor. I'm not saying the man's going to swoop in like a superhero messiah and stop all wars and make the flowers grow and birds sing and solve world hunger and bring puppies to schoolchildren.

Please. I'm also certainly not saying he's perfect, that his presidency will be free of compromise, or slimy insiders, or great heaps of politics-as-usual. While Obama's certainly an entire universe away from George W. Bush in terms of quality, integrity, intelligence and overall inspirational energy, well, so is your dog. Hell, it isn't hard to stand far above and beyond the worst president in American history.

But there simply is no denying that extra kick. As one reader put it to me, in a way, it's not even about Obama, per se. There's a vast amount of positive energy swirling about that's been held back by the armies of BushCo darkness, and this energy has now found a conduit, a lightning rod, is now effortlessly self-organizing around Obama's candidacy. People and emotions and ideas of high and positive vibration are automatically drawn to him. It's exactly like how Bush was a magnet for the low vibrational energies of fear and war and oppression and aggression, but, you know, completely reversed. And different. And far, far better.

Don't buy any of it? Think that's all a bunch of tofu-sucking New Agey bulls-- and Obama is really a dangerously elitist political salesman whose inexperience will lead us further into darkness because, when you're talking national politics, nothing, really, ever changes? I understand. I get it. I often believe it myself.

Not this time.

Few quarrel with predictions of the awesome potential that stem cell research holds. One day, scientists say, stem cells may be used to replace or repair damaged cells, and have the potential to drastically change the treatment of conditions like cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and even paralysis. But the divisions over how to conduct that research have been deep and bitter. Most research has been conducted on embryonic stem cell lines -- cultures of cells derived from four- or five-day-old embryos, or fertilized cells. Opponents of embryonic stem cell research, which often uses embryos discarded by fertility clinics, want it to be severely restricted or banned outright as inhumane. In August 2001, President Bush limited the use of federal funds to research involving cell lines that already existed, a restriction that many researchers called excessively limiting.

As Congress considered legislation to allow broader use of embryonic stem cells, members were swamped with calls from people suffering from diseases for which stem cells research might be the only hope, and from equally vehement opponents. In 2006, the Republican-controlled Congress passed a bill to expand research. In response, Mr. Bush issued the first veto of his presidency. In 2007, Congress, now in Democratic hands, passed a similar bill by a larger margin, but still not by enough to override the veto that Mr. Bush announced on June 20. This is the Obama Purse.....

Hey Women for Obama (men too) ~ Here's the story I HOPE you can help. I was on EBay and bought an Obama Purse. The purse was delivered to my house (I love it!). Well.... to my surprise a few days later ANOTHER purse showed up. I emailed the artist to inform her of the mis-ship and she said it will cost more to send it back...so just do this IF you sell it just send me $20. So this is what I am going to do (since she is an Obama fan) I am putting up for donations a Joan Studwell Obama Purse - signed and numbered by the artist(come to my donation page and take a look at it). ~ I am going to ask for donations to this page AND a message from you on why you are supporting Obama. This fundraiser will go on until Obama gets the nomination (but NOT until August) I will chose a winner of the purse according to your Message...because we all know....WORDS DO MATTER : )
