While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President .
The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.'
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.
The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.'
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.
Hi all!!
This is my first blog entry and not nearly my last! I took time off from life as a school social worker to be a part of Obama's campaign aiming to get him into the White House where he belongs!!!!! I left the world of social work and children to volunteer full time at Obama IL headquarters where so many wonderful volunteers and staff are making a difference each day! The last time I worked on a campaign was 1996 when Clinton won and what a great experience!!!
Today, in 2008, it is truly amazing to be a part of this process and this monumental time in history. I am learning more than I could have imagined each day not only about politics and the way a campaign works, but also about people. I have met several unique dedicated individuals who have touched me and I have gotten to know fabulous people I would not have met otherwise. I am constantly impressed with how I see a bit of Barack's passion, hope, and excitement in each person I speak to at headquarters. Obama's ability to exude such dignity while inspiring us gives me great hope. I see nothing more important than this election. I, like everyone involved, dedicate myself to bringing Obama to victory and feel a real commitment to and an excitement for the coming months. Things are just heating up!!!!
I know so many of you reading this share the same sentiments and want to be able to do more. By reading this blog, you can find ways to volunteer and attend many great events- both critical ways to help Obama win Nov. 4th.
Want to contribute from home or work or anywhere in your spare time? We have an option on this website for you to join Neighbor to Neighbor. There you can make calls from your computer or phone no matter where you are. You can also canvass your neighborhood. You will be talking to fellow Obama supporters (via phone or in person), and you will be asking them to help us in the swing states. There are so many incredibly easy to understand and thorough pieces of information on this Neighbor to Neighbor link that you will literally get the chills when you see it!! I know I did... So check it out:

I will be trying to inform you all about as much as I can. The goal of course is to get the word out as much as possible and for you all to be in the loop on these events so you can go to as many as possible. Your presence is immense and important and no matter how big or how small an event, your presence and or help is CRUCIAL for Obama's victory!!
So, thanks in advance for participating, for reading, and for being a part of this pivotal time in history! More to come.... Stay tuned and check this blog daily for posts on anything and everything Obama...
Thanks for all you do!!
Go Obama!!

On the eve of the Democratic Convention, I recently watched a video posted on YouTube which asked “Can you spell Barack Obama?” The video producer, Thomas Hart, Jr. of On the Potomac Productions (OTP), went to Washington, DC and Chicago and had interviewers randomly pose the question to 300 pedestrians from all walks of life, both male and female. This question got me thinking about what impact, if any, does the fact that most people are unable to spell his name have on his campaign?
Just as Obama says about himself, I too have a “funny name” and grew up as a skinny and awkward kid. My mother credits my father with the desire to give me a unique name. My father, who was at that time a civil rights attorney in the mid 70’s in Mississippi, had an idea. He suggested that my mother look at giving me an African name. My name, which is Swahili for flower and is loosely translated into “flower” or “rose” in several different languages, was chosen. Since then, I’ve grown to love and appreciate my name. I often say that there are only a few “Zahra’s” in this world and even fewer “Zahra Buck’s” in this world, which sets me apart from others. One would think that the unusual nature of my name would yield me a distinction or an edge, however, that is not always the case. I am often shocked by the inability of family, long-time friends and colleagues to pronounce or spell my name. My name’s mispronunciations have as many variations as there are misspellings. Many resort to calling me by my initials or giving me a nickname—all of which are too numerous to count.
Conventional political wisdom lends that successful candidates should have simple and common monosyllabic names. Also, conventional wisdom lends that having a name that precedes your opponent alphabetically yields a competitive edge in favor of one candidate over another. However, Obama’s candidacy throughout this year’s Democratic presidential primary has, for the first time, challenged conventional wisdom.
Should Senator Obama win the presidency in November’s general election, he certainly will have the distinction of having the most unusual name out of all of the 43 Presidents who have served this country before him. Senator Obama’s ability to develop name recognition really does speak volumes for his message of “Change” and “Hope.” His message came at a time when voters sought to move away from the Washington establishment and to move towards new, fresh, and inspiring ideas. When I look at all of the great Presidents who have gone before him, they spoke to a nation of voters who needed hope and change at a time of political unrest, economic instability, or social movement.
The survey conducted by OTP and its Youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EoAKZ301mc indicated that approximately 2 out of 3 (66%) of those who were surveyed did not know how to accurately spell Obama’s name, although many pronounced his name correctly. This fact is even more remarkable given the enormous media coverage of Senator Obama. What was also surprising was that many of the people surveyed who could not correctly spell his name were enthusiastic Obama supporters, including one who was a campaign volunteer. Interestingly, young people under 30 and foreigners were more likely to be able to correctly spell Barack Obama's name. OTP is also producing a full length video documentary on the life and campaign of Barack Obama.
Obviously, this inability to spell Senator Obama’s name has not negatively impacted his campaign to date. However, it may speak to whether voters really know who he is and whether there is a deep comfort level with him. The survey may also reveal a "shallow grasp" of the candidate and his message. For example, I think that as the campaign goes forward, it may be well served to increase his name recognition by spelling out both his first and last name on campaign materials. After all, should Senator Obama get elected, school-aged children across the country will be required to learn the spelling of "President Barack Obama." Whether his name will appear in a future Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee…only time will tell.
