WASHINGTON – Today, President Barack Obama announced his intent to nominate the following individuals to key administration posts:
* Betty E. King, Representative of the United States to the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, with the rank of Ambassador
* Lillian Sparks, Commissioner, Administration for Native Americans, Department of Health and Human Services
President Obama said, "I am grateful that these two talented and dedicated individuals have chosen to serve my administration and the American people, and I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead."
President Obama announced his intent to nominate the following individuals today:
Betty E. King, Nominee for Representative of the United States to the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, with the rank of Ambassador
Betty E. King served as the United States Representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush. In that capacity, Ms. King worked on human rights, children, development, aging and population issues. She was the principal U.S. negotiator on the Millennium Development Goals. Ms. King has an extensive background in philanthropy, having served as the Vice President of the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, Maryland, the Senior Advisor to the CEO of the California Endowment in Los Angeles, CA and an advisor to the Atlantic Philanthropies in New York. She was the Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health in the District of Columbia, the Executive Director of the Southwest Society on Aging, the Director of the Arkansas Department on Aging and an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas. She currently serves on the boards of Refugees International, the United Nations Association of the United States, Phoenix House, and on the Advisory Board of the Annenberg School of Public Diplomacy. Ms. King earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, a Masters degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and was a National Humanities Fellow at Harvard University.
Lillian Sparks, Nominee for Commissioner, Administration for Native Americans, Department of Health and Human Services
Lillian Sparks, a Lakota woman of the Rosebud and Oglala Sioux Tribes, has served as Executive Director of the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) since 2004. Prior to joining NIEA, Ms. Sparks was a staff attorney with the National Congress of American Indians where she worked on international indigenous rights, sacred sites and religious protection, and issues related to youth and healthcare. She also previously served as a law clerk for the National Indian Gaming Commission in the Department of the Interior where she, among other duties, reviewed tribal gaming regulations to ensure compliance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Ms. Sparks is a member of the National Congress of America Indians, the Native American Bar Association, and the National Trends & Services Committee. In 2004, she was named one of seven young Native American Leaders by the USA Weekend magazine. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morgan State University and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Where do Republican Senators get off accusing Democrat Senators of “buying votes” for Health Care Reform? Democrat Senators’ vote “buying” PROVIDED HEALTH CARE BENEFITS FOR THEIR STATE. Republican Senators’ vote “buying” PROVIDED CONTRIBUTION BENEFITS FOR THEIR 2010 CAMPAIGNS! If Republican Senators believe that I’m gullible enough to fall for their, TYPICALLY, hypocritical vote buying spin, I’m not “buying” it!
You can’t criticize the President for the current status of Health Care Reform if you let anti-health reform conservative extremists take over Health Care Forums with NO EQUAL BUT CIVIL pro-health reform representation at the Forums; if you stood on the sidelines as anti-health reform conservative extremists held Tea Party demonstrations with NO EQUAL BUT CIVIL pro-health reform demonstrations, and/or if you didn’t call, email, or write your Congressional representative demanding health reform while anti-health reform conservative extremists were making sure that their sentiments were made clear to Congressional representatives in Washington as well as at “home”. If you don’t like what’s happening to health reform, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT because you can’t expect a President to ‘walk on water’ if you don’t provide him with a life boat!

Is the public’s support for Health Care Reform dwindling because the public believes we DON’T NEED Reform within our present health care system, or is the public’s support dwindling because the Reform debate looks like it’s heading towards more of the same thanks to Lieberman, Republican “Break Obama” Lawmakers, Forums, Tea Parties, Conservatives, and the health insurance industry? Is the public’s dissatisfaction with the President’s “handling” of health care reform dwindling because he didn’t follow the Bush/Cheney/ Republican dominated Congress play book by designing his own Reform legislation and ramming it down the throats of Lawmakers whether they agreed or not, or is it dwindling because he kept his Campaign promise of “CONSENSUS BUILDING” which has proven to be a gigantic fly in the ointment thanks to Lieberman, Republican “Break Obama” Lawmakers, Conservatives, Forums, Tea Parties and the health insurance industry? Who cares if Republican Senators and Lieberman won’t support the public option? You could give them everything they want in a Health Reform bill and they still wouldn’t vote for “quality, affordable health care for all” UNLESS their vote was accompanied by a hefty campaign contribution from the health insurance industry. Republican Lawmakers didn’t care about bi-partisanship when they were in DEFICIT SPENDING power for the previous eight years and they sure don’t care about bi-partisanship now. All they want to do is take the money and run. When Republican Senatorial candidates and Lieberman are flaunting their fancy ads, posters, flyers, rallies and disingenuous, hypocritical rhetoric in 2010, remember that their campaign monies came from the “PEOPLE’S” UNINSURED blood, sweat and tears and vote them ALL out!

The GOP sees a short turn bargain in being obstructionist, but what will be the long time cost they will have to pay for not trying to governing during this critical period? How will history write about the Obstructionist GOP? Will they be identified as the destroyers of the republic?
How will historians appraise the GOP taking the nation into two wars, running up the national debt, and then becoming obstructionist to any solutions to solve the mess they have created? Historians will have an insidious story of obstructionism to tell about the GOP. To be sure, the GOP is on the wrong side of history.
Independent Connecticut Senator JOE LIEBERMAN is, publicly, threatening to go full throttle GOP on Health Care Reform and his self-serving stubbornness can kill all hopes of a bill. The “MAJORITY” cannot let this happen.
