Cannabis Advocates Ensure "Green" DNC

{Denver, CO} – Promises by DNC officials to make the DNC the "greenest
convention ever" are being echoed by cannabis advocates who have organized
a whole host of events guaranteed to make sure the DNC is "green" in more
ways than one.

The Green DNC events kick off on Thursday (8/21) with the THC National
Convention at the Oriental Theatre. This will include a full day
educational conference and evening entertainment/fundraising event. The
"Our Health Freedoms" Educational Seminar goes from 1pm to 6pm. This will
feature medicinal cannabis patients, caregivers and holistic practitioners
discussing the positive future of medical marijuana therapy. A new program
will be revealed designed to achieve a higher quality of life for patients

On Saturday (8/23/), Yippie leader and cannabis advocate Dana Beal will
speak at a Drug Peace Rally at Lincoln Park, between Civic Center and the
State Capitol at 3:00pm. Beal was one of the original Yippies from the
1960s and founder of the Yipster Times. He has been an outspoken advocate
of marijuana legalization and organizes the Global Marijuana March every
year.

1. Public Enemy Free Concert

The Re-create 68 Alliance has announced that in addition to free shows by Dead Prez, Rebel Diaz and Blue Scholars, and 22 other influential bands, the historic and legendary political hip-hop band Public Enemy (The original line-up) will be playing a free concert at Civic Center Park on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 2pm which is expected to draw thousands (no tickets necessary).

2. Cindy Sheehan Joins Us in Denver

DNC Police Riot Preview?

Activists Declare Zero Tolerance for Poorly-trained and Rogue Federal

[Denver, CO] -- Was the July federal attack on Rainbow peace activists a
preview for DNC police riots? Colorado activists are asking Denver
officials to adopt a zero tolerance policy for poorly-trained and rogue
federal law enforcement officers who will be providing security at the
Democratic National Convention (DNC) in downtown Denver from Aug. 24
through Aug. 28. The Colorado Legal Eagles, a local civil rights group, is
asking Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter to
begin an investigation into brutal and violent tactics used on July 3 by
federal agents in Wyoming against peace activists in the National Forest,
in the hopes of preventing those same tactics from being used against peace
activists at the DNC. The violent tactics, which injured several adults and
children, include the shooting of pepper bullets into crowds of women and
children, pointing semi-automatic rifles at children, and repeatedly
tasering a man who was handcuffed.

Attendees of the annual Rainbow Gathering meet every year on the July 4
holiday in the national forest to camp, commune with nature, and pray for
peace. This year's Gathering was in southwestern Wyoming near Big Sandy and
was attended by about 6,000 campers. Every year, the U.S. Forest Service
(USFS) increases its attempts to disrupt and cause violence at the Rainbow
Family's peaceful gatherings. This year's Gathering was no exception and
was almost certainly used by the feds as a training exercise for the DNC.

The pathetic examples of crowd control exhibited by these federal agents is
either extremely poor training or done intentionally to provoke the crowd.
One incident occurred on July 3 in the Kid Village area of the Gathering,
where all the children in the campground play. The incident began when
twelve to twenty federal agents stormed into Kid Village, brandishing
handguns, rifles, shotguns, tasers and pepper bullet guns with the intent
to arrest one person for what was later said to be suspicion of marijuana
possession.

Panic and terror ensued as the feds stormed Kid Village, which was crowded
with dozens of campers and children. One woman who tried to ask the agents
what was going on was brutally thrown to the ground and also arrested. No
one knew why the camp had suddenly been invaded by armed federal agents

The hundreds of Rainbows in Kid Village try to dispel the tense situation
by chanting "Om" (a type of meditation chant with calming effects.).
Rainbow cries of "We love you" and "We mean you no harm" directed at the
federal agents are heard.

Without any warning whatsoever, several USFS federal agents open fire into
the crowd. Instead of trying to communicate with the crowd and control it,
they started firing their guns at close range and at random, using what was
determined later to be hard plastic pepper bullets. As the feds retreated
with the two people they had arrested, they repeatedly opened fire without
warning into the crowd, injuring both adults and children, and hitting one
man in the face. There are also reports that the feds used rubber bullets
and that one federal agent pointed his gun at several children and a baby.

The agents had no bullhorn and did not try to communicate with the crowd in
any way, causing questions on whether or not they intentionally tried to
incite the crowd to get angry and violent. Instead, they instantly formed a
defensive posture, with guns pointed outward. The only ones who tried to
control the crowd were several Rainbow peace activists. Shouts of "Stay
back. Stay where you are" are heard from the Rainbows. Several peace
activists who tried to help by standing as buffers between the federal
agents and campers were shot repeatedly with pepper bullets in the back.

Police say these relatively new non-lethal weapons are similar to paint
balls, however, they are not that innocuous. Photos of injuries caused by

"In the days when cops only had guns and shooting people would kill them,
they were a lot more careful about using weapons," says Rob Savoye,
Colorado Legal Eagles. "Now that they have less than lethal weaponry, there
is nothing to stop them from shooting at people. In fact, because these
weapons are supposedly 'less than lethal', law enforcement is actually
encouraged to start shooting at people. These weapons are extremely lethal,
and the cops need to understand that."

Savoye continued, "These videos show the feds weren't sufficiently trained
to deal with the stress of dealing with large crowds of people. They got
easily upset in situations where they shouldn't have. I hope the DNC
security force has a lot better training. Like the Rainbows, the DNC
protesters are just people exercising their First Amendment rights and
there is no reason to start shooting at them."

Joseph Vigorito, another member of the Colorado Legal Eagles, says, "It's
clear they went in there to inflict pain and hurt people. There was no one
posing any threat whatsoever. The feds were just looking to incite a
response from the crowd."

This is likely to be a preview of what crowd control will look like at the
DNC. The USFS federal agents presumably received the same training as the
federal agents who will be controlling the crowds at the DNC. The DNC
security is being lead by the Secret Service, with help from the National
Guard and other federal agencies.

At the DNC, federal agents are likely to find themselves in instances where
they must make an arrest in a crowd of people. Will they handle it the same
heavy-handed way they did in Wyoming, storming into the crowd and shooting
at random? Or will they come equipped with bullhorns to communicate with
the crowd and a better tactic to arrest one person in the midst of
thousands?

Denver received a $50 million dollar grant for security during the DNC. If
the training of the federal agents in Wyoming is any indication of how
well-trained the agents will be during the DNC, we may be in store for a
repeat of the "police riots" of the 1968 DNC in Chicago.

We are urging concerned citizens to contact Mayor Hickenlooper and Governor
Ritter and urge them to have zero tolerance for any police "overreaction"
during the DNC:

Last ReCreate '68 Update.....We Are On Our Own....Democratic National Convention!

Sorry to say folks that this will be the last e-news flash prior to the historic events that will be occurring at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. In this update we will list relevant events, locations, speakers, and bands. If you need to know more about a specific event, you can review the information on the website www.recreate68.org.

Before we list the events, R-68 would like to take a moment and address an ever-increasing amount of attacks from the more conservative quarters on the left. Many have asked us to respond to multiple false and inaccurate claims and smear jobs put out by other organizations and individuals. These types of mis-information campaigns have a long history here in Denver and across this country. When an organization allies with the voices of the oppressed and becomes effective, the attacks escalate. These attacks and counter-organizations started over a year ago but have come and gone. R-68 has always maintained a principled position and refused to engage in this behavior due to our belief that the left needs unity and solidarity now more than ever and this unproductive in fighting is a distraction to the larger global issues we face. Our actions and behavior speak louder than words and we will continue to try to set the example of principled behavior for our communities. We will not respond, in kind, to these slanderous attacks, but instead, will maintain our focus to provide a forum for oppressed communities and communities of color and to do what we can to amplify their voices on the political stage. Our events will reflect all of the hard work and commitment to the vision that was shared with us at the beginning of our organizing efforts, a vision that became the foundation and blueprint for our actions from respected voices and leaders in this struggle from the communities mentioned above.

Unfortunately, Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente, two voices for true change in this country, have become targets of some of this unnecessary and unproductive rage that has been perpetuated by what we refer to as spirit snipers. Spirit snipers are people who take shots from afar at others working for change, while doing nothing positive in the community. We applaud the principled stand that Cynthia & Rosa have taken in the face of threats and intimidation to their campaign for the highest office in this land. It is not often that one will find such a morally sound base in a political ticket or individual. So yes, R-68 does support a "black" candidate and a "female" candidate - that is why we support Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente!

R-68 will be hosting a press conference on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 2pm in Civic Center Park at the Greek Amphitheater. We will be announcing the name and the date of performance of a historic politically driven band that will be joining us for a free concert for the people. In addition, we will be announcing three guest speakers who are well known and respected nationally who have committed to joining us and speaking with our already historic line-up of voices for change. Please come down and support the spokes people.

2. Events

R-68 has assisted certain communities in organizing the logistics for historic events in Denver during the DNC. Below is a list of the events, speakers and music acts that will be occurring each day. Please note that this is not the entire amazing amount of activities that will be occurring during the week. You can go to our welcoming table at any of our events and obtain a copy of a comprehensive schedule that our welcome committee worked hard to produce. The schedule includes events from all other groups in addition to ours in order to maximize the voices of our communities and show solidarity in message. R-68 has agreed to support this march to the Pepsi Center, organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Rage Against The Machine Free Concert at the Denver Coliseum, 11am

Don't miss seeing this free concert by one of the best political bands in the country. The event is not an R-68 event, but is sponsored by IVAW and Tent State.

Immigration March and Rally, 11am

R-68 will be providing support and marching in solidarity with the undocumented community members of Colorado for a more human immigration policy.

Solidarity March to Invesco Field, Skyline Park, 2pm

There will be a permitted march in solidarity that will express the ideals of true change that goes beyond a campaign slogan.

Guild (Brian Vicente, Executive Director of the PLP) are asking groups with
pre-planned events during the DNC, such as parades, marches,
demonstrations, rallies, vigils, street theatre, etc., to provide us with
information on their events.

We realize that some events may be spontaneous, not publicly advertised, or
that you might be reluctant or otherwise unable to provide some info prior
to the DNC. To the extent that you are able to share this information with
us in advance, however, it will greatly assist our efforts to help protect
your rights by allowing us to anticipate how we may need to dispatch PLP
Legal Observers and/or ACLU staff to events, and to formulate plans and
allocate resources for the potential need for legal assistance.

If you can provide any of the following, please send an email regarding
your event(s), including the following:

1) date
2) time
3) location
4) cell phone # and name for event contact
5) brief description of the activity and expected number of participants
to Taylor Pendergrass at <tpendergrass@aclu-co.org>, or leave the same info
on my voicemail at 303-777-5482 x104.

Any information you provide about events will be used only for the purpose
of planning and coordinating legal observers and legal assistance, and will
not be shared outside of the ACLU of Colorado and the People's Law Project.

Likewise, if you are able to provide a cell number and name for an event
contact, it would not be shared without anyone outside of the ACLU and the
PLP, and would only be used in the event that ACLU or PLP staff needed to
get in touch with an event contact to confirm reports of problems or
arrests at an event.

The Festival of Democracy will include free music and performing arts, free food, and free institution building and political training.The Festival of Democracy will be a five day event running in conjunction with the DNC Convention. The purpose will be to share some fun and to work towards the development of programs and networks that will address our community problems ourselves, without relying on the two party capitalist system. We will also be offering a 24 hour free medical clinic for all community members to receive free health care.

As the primary season started I grew suspicious of the Kennedy clan endorsing Barack Obama. Knowing my US political history I know that it was the vote in Illinois that put John Kennedy into the White House. I also have read that Joseph Kennedy Sr. spread wads of money around to both the Chicago Democratic Jugernaut and the state Democratic party during the 1960 run of John Kennedy. They say that it was 8000 votes gardnered by the Chicago Mayor Richard Daley that pulled off the win. So when the Kennedy's jumped out so quickly to put their support behind Obama I just had a gut feeling that some old favor was called into play. I am also wary of the Chicago/Illinois Democratic Parties. More than once have their electees ended up being indicted for coruption and graft. Generally they are a black eye to the Democratic Party. This is/was the first stumbling block I had with our party's presumptive nominee for President.

Anyone care to enlighten me on this matter?

To My Previous Blog Commentors,

This Hippie is also a long time Yippie (I know I am over 30). I have been politically involved since going clean for Gene in 1968, age 17. I was also a page at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. My first exposure to street politics and the Daley political machine. It left an indelible mark on my political psyche. I question and then I question again. Leave no rock unstoned.

My credentials speak for themselves in my community involvement. I am a disabled Vietnam era veteran and I have plenty of time on my hands to do a lot of front line soldiering. Mostly for the American Civil Liberties Union and S.A.F.E.R. I have been out here in the trenches since I turned 18 in 1969.

I lost a friend at Kent State in 1970.

I have run a quasi political blog for the past 3+ years. http://heynowunitedstates.spaces.live.com/ I have an average of 375 hits a week.

I joined the Youngstown Ohio Democratic Party in 1967 and remained through 1977 and have been involved with the Denver & Colorado Parties since 1992. Before that I lived in Boulder and was involved both in the community and the party (1977~1992).

Poli Sci was a major for a day or so. I haven't finished college.

My current pet political peeves are human rights, the U.S. Constitution, global warming, and legalization of recreational marijuana and ending all war.

What is comes down to is that my head hasn't been in a hole. I am a media phreek! I read, listen, and watch the talking heads about 5 to 6 hours daily. Tim Russert was one of my favorites. Jesus bless him.

To Karen, I am a former managing editor of a beer magazine and have a great sense of the English language. Obviously you don't recognize out and out satire. I did visit your blog though and found you to be intelligent. A trait I admire. I'll have to return and read more, who knows maybe you can be the one to convince this "troll!" BTW I find the use of "Troll" to be discriminatory and elitist. My German/Celt ancestry reminds me of this, "You catch more ants with honey than you do with vinegar!"

Cruising around the Obama blogs I see the word troll used over and over. I went to Dictionary.com to see what troll was really all about.

Yes it refers to dwarfs and giants who move around clumsily (Sweden). Nothing really derogatory. However the main definition is, to sing or utter in a full, rolling voice. Given this I am a troll because in a full rolling voice I implore that is Barack Obama the man to fill the shoes of the President of the United States or is he an enigma?

I am seeking convincing and conviction.

This is a letter I sent to both the Democratic National Party and the Denver Democratic Party of which I am a member of both.

Denver Democratic Party and the Democratic National Party

I am William A. Chengelis, I have voted a straight Democratic ticket since I got the right to vote in 1969. I supported Hillary Clinton all through the primaries and grudginly conceded to the fact that I would have to follow party lines and vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming Presidential election.

Now he has voted to give George Bush and his cronies the right to further erode the Constitution permanently. He also let off the telecoms. Something the courts should have decided. Not the houses of Congress.

Tell me why I should not start an apathy vote campaign on my blog. I cover peace, love, hippie stuff. Mostly in the political sense. I would rather not vote for either candidate now. They are both in the same bed when it comes to eroding our inalienable rights given by the US Constitution.

I am a Deadhead and many of my compatriots chose Obama because the Grateful Dead re-formed for Obama to raise support and money for his campaign. I didn't until it became a necessity. If you can not give me a suitable answer it will become my mission to erode our candidate starting with the Grateful Dead community then the party as a whole.

If Obama thought the race card was a tough hurdle, now he's taken on the American Constitution lovers. Where's his speech for this? Barack Obama is a sell-out and moving more toward the center everyday.

If you haven't guessed already I am a paid member of the American Civil Liberties Union too.

Nobody for President, because when Nobody wins, Nobody loses!
