VOTE TODAY!

Virginia, this is it. This is the day that your vote can fundamentally change the course of this country and bring the change that we so desperately need.

To find your polling location go here.

We're expecting unprecedented voter turnout today, so get to the polls as soon as you can and a few friends to help turn out even more votes -- and pass the time if there is a line.

Remember, as long as you are in line by 7pm you can vote.

If you live in a region of VA that is experiencing heavy rain, please share any extra rain gear with your local office, and all the warm beverages you can carry.

Last night, Senator Obama ended his speech with these words of inspiration:

"If you are willing, if you are willing to endure some rain, if you are willing to drag that person, you know is not going to vote, to the polls, if you are willing to organize and volunteer in the office, if you are willing to stand with me, if you are willing to fight with me, I know, your voice will matter. So I have just got one question for you Virginia, are you fired up? Are you ready to go? Fired up? Ready to go! Virginia, lets go change the world."

Virginia, we can be can be the difference in this election -- don't let a little rain or wait stand in our way. Let's win this thing.

Governor Richardson stopped by the Richmond headquarters to encourage supporters to continue to work as hard as they can before polls close on Tuesday evening. Richardson said that he knew we were tired but that these final days are by far the most important.

Jay Z and Russell Simmons Get-Out-The-Vote

Jay Z and Russell Simmons just held a rally here in Richmond. Both spoke about how amazing it was that Virginia was considered a "battleground" state and the historic nature of this campaign.

They both warned the audience of excited students that Barack Obama will not win next Tuesday if students do not get out and vote. If you are a student and did not vote absentee, make sure you and your friends make it to the polls on Tuesday, November 4th!

Caroline Kennedy for Barack

Virginia, this is it. Millions of people have already voted absentee for Barack Obama and today is the last day for eligible residents to vote absentee in person in Virginia.

After you vote, you should make sure that others get out and vote by signing up here. And if you do not have time today, you can still vote on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4th!

Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, was in Charlottesville and Richmond today discussing Senator Obama's technology policies. He spoke about how the Senator's campaign has revolutionized the use of the Internet, creating thousands of new communities and events across the nation.

Schmidt emphasized that with only four days left, we need to continue to utilize the technology that has brought us all together.

Gov. Kaine gets out the vote

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds were in Richmond earlier tonight, performing right across the street from the Richmond Campaign for Change headquarters. They put on a three hour concert to show support for Barack Obama and encourage fans to get involved and Get Out the Vote.

Young voters have registered in unprecedented numbers in Virginia this year, and could be key to turning the state blue for the first time in 40 years. That is exciting stuff, but it'll only happen if everyone gets out to vote on November 4th --- and if everyone brings their friends, roommates, and classmates to go vote with them. Governor Ray Mabus

Former Governor Ray Mabus of Mississippi fired up supporters for GOTV this afternoon at Senator Obama's Campaign for Change Ashland office. Governor Mabus (1987-1991) passed the B.E.S.T (Better Education for Success Tomorrow), one of the most comprehensive education reform programs in the country, and was named one Fortune Magazine's top ten education governors.

Mississippi also had record growth in new jobs, investment, tourism and exports. Governor Mabus was also appointed by President Clinton to be the United States ambassador to Saudi Arabia serving from 1994 to 1996. Currently, Governor Mabus serves as a top advisor to the Senator Obama's campaign.

Senator Jim Webb in Roanoke

On Friday, Barack was in the Commonwealth for the seventh time since winning the Democratic primary.

Sen. Jim Webb introduced Barack to a pumped-up Roanoke crowd of more than 8,000. He spoke at length about his trust in Barack Obama and in his comitment to fight for the people of Virginia.

He also pointed out that the Republican ticket has held a total of zero events in the Southwest, compared to Barack Obama and Joe Biden's six.

When I arrived at work today, I was met by a huge line of Dave Matthews fans outside of our Richmond headquarters. Some people had been waiting in line since 1:30 in the morning!

Everyone was in good spirits and thousands of people signed up for canvassing and phonebanking for Barack Obama!

All general admission tickets are gone, but you can still get a VIP ticket: All you have to do is come in to your nearest office and complete one door-to-door shift before the show on Sunday and then sign up for two additional shifts to be completed before November 4th. Sign up here.

Fairfax Rally with Military Families

RICHMOND, Va. – Medal of Honor recipient, former Army Capt. Bud Bucha, will headline a Virginia Veterans for Obama Saturday rally in Fairfax. Bucha will be joined by former Gen. James Kelley, a deputy commander of the 3rd Army and deputy assistant secretary of defense for training and readiness, former Brigadier Gen. David McGinnis and former Col. Larry Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff for then-Sec. of State Colin Powell.

The event will allow veterans and military families from across the region the opportunity to discuss Obama’s policies and learn how they can get involved in this historic campaign. The rally will also include a panel discussion on Obama’s strong record of standing up for America’s active duty soldiers, veterans and military families as well as the judgment he showed on a series of critical issues ranging from his early opposition to the war in Iraq to his continued commitment to rooting out al Qaeda and finishing the job in Afghanistan.
John McCain, meanwhile, has no plan to end the war in Iraq and would continue the Bush policies that have diminished America’s standing in the world.

Veterans and military families across the region are encouraged to attend.

I just got back from our First Ladies of Virginia tour with Anne Holton, wife of Governor Tim Kaine, and former First Lady Lisa Collis, wife of former Governor Mark Warner. The first ladies spoke about how Barack will help improve our broken health care system, ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work, and reach across the aisle to move forward on tough issues.

At each one of our stops we met women and men who were excited about Barack Obama and the change we need. We made stops in Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Richmond and Herndon. Pictures from the day are below.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Lukas McGowan was sitting in an old barber’s chair, a cellphone pressed to his ear, as he contemplated a critical assignment for the closing chapter of the presidential campaign: the ground game.
The most pressing matter inside this field office for Senator Barack Obama was not the next debate or the latest scorching exchange with Senator John McCain, but getting every possible voter to the polls. As Mr. McGowan surveyed an assembly line of activity, a more immediate question popped into his mind: Have all the spots been filled in the 6 to 8 p.m. shift for walking neighborhood precincts?
“When we identify sporadic voters, we want to go back to their house until they can’t stand us anymore,” said Mr. McGowan, 23, who oversees the Obama operation in Fairfax County, which is Virginia’s largest. With a smile, he added, “As long as we’re kind and respectful.”

Retired military leaders say Obama is best choice

The News Virginian reports:

STAUNTON — Retired Navy Rear Adm. Jamie Barnett honors the POW and long military service of John McCain, but believes Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama will make a better commander in chief if elected the country’s next president.

Barnett, retired Army Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy and retired Marine Sgt. Maj. John Estrada stumped for Obama in Staunton on Saturday at the Staunton Public Library.

Barnett said Obama will have a much broader national security view as president, a view that will allow him to look at “diplomatic, financial and military options.”

“He understands the diplomatic process,” said Barnett, who said Obama is willing to sit down at the negotiating table with foreign adversaries.

Barnett last served as deputy commander of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, which has more than 9,000 sailors in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Northern Virginia resident, Barnett senses a frustration among the commonwealth’s 800,000 veterans with the national security and foreign policy of the Bush administration.

“They see the failed eight years of Bush policies,” Barnett said.

Lieutenant General Claudia Kennedy, Sergeant Major John Estrada to Campaign in Virginia

Richmond, VA - This weekend, Lieutenant General Claudia Kennedy and the 15th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps John Estrada will hold a series of national security and Veterans for Obama town hall events Saturday and Sunday in communities across Virginia.

On Saturday, Kennedy and Estrada will headline town halls in Roanoke, Staunton, and Winchester where they'll talk about Obama's plans to bring a responsible end to the Iraq war, rebuild international alliances, root out al Qaeda and finish the job in Afghanistan. Obama's foreign policy vision contrasts with John McCain's. McCain would continue the failed Bush policies of the last eight years - war without end in Iraq, cowboy diplomacy and an energy policy that funds both sides of the war on terror.

On Sunday, the two will hold Veterans for Obama events in Triangle - adjacent to the Quantico Marine Corps Base - and Virginia Beach. Obama was also an early supporter of U.S. Jim Webb's 21st Century GI Bill, and as president he will fully fund the VA and have a zero tolerance policy for homelessness among veterans.

Kennedy was the first female to reach the rank of three-star Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army. She retired in 2000 after 31 years of military service. During her career she was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and is a member of the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame.

More than 200 canvassers and dozens of neighboorhood children & their parents attended the Canvass Kick off in Bailey's Elementary School in Falls Church this Saturday.

Walter Tejada, Chairman of the Arlington County Board, introduced George Lopez who then fired up the crowd before sending them canvassing Latino homes in Northern Virginia.

Lopez stressed the importance of coming out and volunteering every weekend from now until the election day. Latino students make up 45% of Bailey's Elementary School's population.

RICHMOND, Va. – Actors Blair Underwood and Megalyn Echikunwoke will headline voter registration rallies and meet with voters leading up to the October 6 voter registration deadline this weekend. Both are also expected to attend church services in Richmond.

Underwood and Echikunwoke will highlight Senator Obama’s plans to shore up the economy, provide tax breaks for 95 percent of Virginia families and fundamentally change Washington to make progress on the toughest issues facing our nation.

Underwood currently appears in the HBO series, In Treatment and ABC’s drama, Dirty Sexy Money. He recently completed his second book entitled “In the Night of the Heat: The Tennyson Hardwick Story.”

Echikunwoke recently starred in Who Do You Love?, and is probably best known for her role in the first season of 24.

Latino Town Hall in Annandale

The VA Campaign for Change held a Latino Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, September 25th in Annandale. Former Commissioner of the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission, Roel C. Campos, and Arlington County Board of Supervisors Chairman J. Walter Tejada headlined the town hall discussion. The pair was joined by U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's Virginia campaign Policy Director Oscar Ramirez.

Campos and Tejada discussed Sen. Obama's plans to jumpstart the economy by investing in our infrastructure to rebuild our roads and bridges and create good paying jobs, cut taxes for middle class Virginia families and provide affordable health care to every American.

The Tappahannock Banner

Here are some great pictures from our Campaign for Change office in Tappahannock. Here is the story of the volunteers who created this banner:

We are independents. Usually, we vote against somebody. This time, we’re voting for somebody. For this first time in our lives (we’re both on Social Security) we are really enthusiastic about a major party nominee for president. This is the first time we have donated to a national campaign (several small amounts) and the first time we have tried to make a difference beyond our two votes.
So we volunteered a few hours at the new Obama regional office in Tappahannock, Va. We had a hard time finding the place, an old house with only an Obama sign in the yard. Jo decided she could make a big banner which could be strung across the front columns to identify the place as Obama headquarters. Supplies were limited, so she made a trip to get a three-by-30-foot piece of fabric and blue and red acrylic paints. The hand-painted job grew from a few hours to two days. Jack had to return to the store for another bottle of blue paint.
We have been enthusiastic about Barack Obama since he announced for the Democratic nomination for president nearly two years ago. He was different. We felt like he could, indeed, inspire Americans and change the direction of the country. We also felt he could inspire and persuade others and restore our place of leadership and respect in the world. We still do.
We became political junkies, devouring the New York Times and Washington Post political pages online and watching political coverage on TV.
We have watched in dismay as the Bush administration and fumbled and bumbled along, ignoring the constitution and undermining our standing in the world.
It took only a short time for George Bush and Dick Cheney to ruin our country and destroy our standing in the world. The agony continues. We’re sick and tired of George Bush and Dick Cheney. Eight years of a Republican administration is more than enough. The possibility of another Republican administration makes us scream at our TV set. To paraphrase Shakespeare, a Republican by any other name, such as “maverick,“ smells the same. The only real positive change is a Democrat back in the White House. Barack Obama is our man.

Remember in 2000 when Florida was decided by a small handful of votes? And then remember in 2004 when we sat by our TVs for hours waiting to see how Ohio would swing? That could be Virginia this year, and if you are an Obama supporter we absolutely need your help in turning the Commonwealth blue for Barack and other democrats.

My name is Scott. I am originally from Poolesville, MD, but in May I decided that what we have at stake in this year's election is too important so I decided to move to Virginia to volunteer full time for Senator Obama through November 4th. I am convinced that if Senator Obama carries Virginia, he will win this election. That is why we need the help of supporters from Virginia, but also from neighboring DC and Maryland!

Campaign for Change to Host Debate Watch Parties Across the Commonwealth

Richmond, VA – On Friday night, the Virginia Campaign for Change will host debate watch parties across the Commonwealth. The watch parties will allow supporters and veterans across the state the chance to join together to watch the first debate of the general election. The debate, focused on foreign policy, begins at 9 p.m.

In Virginia Beach, Kathy Roth-Douquet, the founder of Blue Star Families for Obama, will headline the watch party. Roth-Douquet is an author and the wife of a Marine. She served in the Clinton administration and Department of Defense.

Former U.S. Army Capt. Wes Moore will be the featured speaker at the Richmond debate watch party. Moore is a former University of Maryland Football standout and a Rhodes Scholar. He served a combat tour in Afghanistan and was awarded the Bronze Star. He later served as a special assistant to Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice and as a White House Fellow.
Many of the watch parties will feature local veterans who support Obama. The events will also provide an opportunity for the organization to reach out to new voters and undecided Virginians.

The watch parties will build upon the unprecedented grassroots efforts of the Virginia campaign. Local residents are encouraged to attend their local watch parties, a full list can be found below.

95-year-old Registers to Vote for the First Time!

WVEC reports:

NEWPORT NEWS – Virginia elections officials say nine of out ten newly-registered voters will be voting for the first time this November.

Not all of them are young people, but 95-year-old Florence Washington is just as excited.

She became eligible to vote when Franklin Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover battled it out for the White House, but it took the candidacy of Sen. Barack Obama to get her on the voter rolls.

Her daughter says she tried to get Florence registered before and it's excited the whole family.

"I think it's wonderful. I am happy. I am glad that she is going to do it for the first time. It's exciting," said granddaughter Sherry Benbow.

"I am going to vote if I can, if nothing happens to me between now and that time," Washington said.

Washington says every eligible American should register to vote. She also said you should vote for who you want to vote for!

The close of business on October 6 is the last day to register for the November election.

There are people too young to vote, but would if they could, and there are 95-year-olds registering to vote for the first time. That's inspiring.

Hispanic Heritage Month!

It's Hispanic Heritage month and our Virginia Latinos for Obama program is busy registering new voters, reaching out to Latino voters, and building a strong community.

Last Saturday Virginia Latinos for Obama held a rally in southern Arlington, kicking off of a region-wide canvass targeting Latino voters in the state. Walter Tejada, Chairman of the Arlington County Board; Chris Zimmerman, Arlington County Board Member; Ingrid Morroy, Commissioner of the Revenue in Arlington County; and Emma Violand-Sanchez, the first Latina running for School Board in Arlington were among the speakers who fired up a crowd of 150 Latino volunteers before they hit the streets and went out canvassing Latino voters in South Arlington.

The event was featured in Spanish language newspapers and Noticias Univision.

RICHMOND, Va. – Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will hold a “Four Families, Four Issues, for the Change We Need” town hall discussion with families in Richmond and Williamsburg Tuesday. Sebelius will engage four area families who are struggling with four issues that are affecting hundreds of thousands of Virginians in this economic downturn.

Senator Obama’s campaign has heard from dozens of Virginian families – at town hall meetings, community gatherings and rallies – who have watched their dreams slowly slip away because of the Bush Administration’s failed economic policies that John McCain promises to continue. Virginian families are looking for new leadership that will restore America’s promise.

As more and more families have grappled with stagnating wages, rising costs and a life-altering housing crisis, John McCain has insisted that the fundamentals of the economy are strong.

The Associated Press reports:

LANDOVER, Md. -- The Washington Redskins executed the tip drill to perfection, with Leigh Torrence all over Steve Breaston as Kurt Warner's pass bounced high into the air.

The Redskins went on to defeat the Arizona Cardinals 24-17. What makes this all the more exciting (for me at least) is that Torrence and defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander tailgated outside of the Varina-Hermitage high school football game on Friday and helped register new voters. Torrence and Alexander both expressed the importance of registering to vote and their support for Senator Obama this November.

RICHMOND, Va. – U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change will host its “Faith, Family & Values” tour in communities in the Shenandoah Valley and southwestern Virginia on Monday and Tuesday. The tour will focus on how Obama’s faith has informed his judgment and shaped his perspective on the most urgent problems facing the nation.

Dr. Shaun Casey, Obama’s evangelical outreach coordinator, will lead the forums and talk about Obama’s faith how it has shaped his plans to strengthen Virginia families. Casey is a former Associate Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the National Capital Semester for Seminarians (NCSS) at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC., and is the author of The Making of a Catholic President: Kennedy v. Nixon 1960

The tour will kick off in Bristol on Monday – making stops in Marion and Wytheville – and then travel to Pulaski, Lynchburg and Harrisonburg on Tuesday. The forums are free to the public and open to the press.

The faith forums are an opportunity for people of faith to come together -- across denominational lines – to talk about how they live their faith outside the four walls of the church, what they want to see from their presidential candidates and how Obama’s faith informs how he thinks about the issues facing Virginia families.

The Obama campaign is holding a series of faith forums across the country to engage people of faith and describe how the senator has put his faith into action as an organizer working with church-based organizations on the Southside of Chicago and as a senator in Illinois and the U.S. Congress.

Former Republican Gov. Linwood Holton and his daughter, first lady Anne Holton, will campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in Southwest Virginia tomorrow and Tuesday. Anne Holton is the wife of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, a Democrat who is national co-chairman of the Obama campaign. Holton was Virginia's first Republican governor since Reconstruction when elected in 1969. In recent years, he has mostly backed Democratic candidates. The Holtons will hold community forums in Wise, Abingdon and Galax tomorrow, and in Wytheville, Christiansburg and Roanoke on Tuesday, the Obama campaign said yesterday.

Delta Canvass

Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are out in full force today, canvassing, phonebanking, and helping with data entry in our Richmond, Arlington and Petersburg offices. By 9:30 this morning over 45 Delta volunteers had already signed in as volunteers in our Richmond office alone! Our office was humming with Delta members wearing their red sorority t-shirts and getting ready to head out and hit the doors. Virginia heat can't stop these members of Delta from working for something they believe in!

These Delta volunteers are changing America and making history knock by knock, call by call. Nothing is more compelling than neighbors talking to neighbors about why they support Senator Obama. TV ads, bumper stickers, and glossy brochures are all fine and good, but face to face interaction is hands down the best way to spread our message of real change.

Marlon Wayans is Voting this November

The Daily Press reports:

Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans admitted to Hampton University students that he didn't vote in the last two presidential elections.

"Bush is my fault," he told them. "The economy is my fault."

Now he's on a tour of Virginia colleges to make sure that win or lose, he did everything he could to get Democratic nominee Barack Obama elected.

Wayans, brother of comedian-actors Damon Wayans and Keenan Ivory Wayans, might be best known for his roles in the films "White Chicks" and "Scary Movie."

He campaigned at HU on Friday along with actress Jurnee Smollett, who starred with Denzel Washington in the 2007 movie "The Great Debaters."

Wayans makes a good point. Voting this November is your best tool to bring about real change in this country. The easiest way to register to vote is at VOTE FOR CHANGE. I honestly talk about this site all day long. I have sent the link to all of my friends at least ten times, and you should too.

From Kenya to Lebanon

For one of our super volunteers, yesterday's town hall in Lebanon VA was particularly special. Here is his story in his own words:

Hi I'm Bruno and I just got back from watching Obama's town hall
meeting in Lebanon VA. Getting there was not easy. I work in the
McLean office in NOVA 6 or 7 hours away. After fruitlessly searching
for buses and trains that would get me there in time or at least did
not leave at 2am, I was able to find a ride from Richmond. The catch
was that I needed to get there by 8am. After another round of googling

That might be a bit of a shock to some but bear with me. I actually
live in Kenya and came over here to work on the campaign for a month.
I believe strongly like much of the rest of the world's population
that the last 8 years have been an international catostophe for
America. I wanted to do my small part in helping elect Obama because
he will be an excellent President on the world stage. I'm glad I came
and I truly believe America will make the right choice this time.

The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports:

The campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama announced today that it is opening its second campaign office in Charlottesville.

The office will open Saturday and will be located at 104 Wertland St. It will focus on voter outreach for University of Virginia students.

Obama’s campaign also has an office located on the Downtown Mall.

Both Charlottesville campaign offices are urging residents to stop by on Saturday to donate canned food, bottled water, first-aid supplies and other goods for people displaced by Hurricane Gustav.

As of this weekend, Obama’s campaign will have 41 offices located across Virginia.

Virginia is widely seen as a battleground state in the Nov. 4 election between Obama and Republican nominee John McCain.

McCain’s campaign has not opened any offices in the Charlottesville region.

With only one month left to register to vote it is incredibly important to register as many new voters as we possibly can. Register to vote. Register your friends and family to vote. Register the guy at your local gas station to vote. Kayt from Oakton recently told us:

A few months ago I had a conversation with a pet store owner about the importance of voter registration. His position was that if you are not already registered to vote, you do not deserve the right to vote. It was that conversation that helped me to understand the importance of voter registration. Being registered to vote is not a privilege of a chosen few, but a right given to all Americans.

I saw John McCain's attack squad of negative, cynical politicians. They lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign.

Vote for Change

When I was an organizing fellow in Fairfax County, I ran into quite a few people who thought they were registered to vote for the primary, but when they got to the voting booth were turned away. These were people who were excited to vote for Barack Obama, but were unable to because of paperwork. Some of them had recently moved, many of them had never voted before. With only one month left to register to vote, it is incredibly important that you register or re-register NOW.

The campaign has created this amazing tool called VOTE FOR CHANGE. On this site you can check your application status, your polling location, register to vote or apply to vote absentee. I used it just the other day to check if I was still correctly registered (I was!). Send this link to all your friends, your friend's friends, and maybe even people you don't like all that much. In order to win this November we need to register as many people as we can in this next month. We can do it, but we need your help.

Sunday August 24, 2008 = Welcome to the 2008 DNC!
Keyanna Connor, a Page with the Virginia Delegation, and I left Richmond for Denver early Sunday morning and arrived in Denver around mid-day. We were warmly welcomed at the airport by volunteers with the Democratic National Convention. It is exciting to see so many people excited Democrats who are here to celebrate our party and Barack Obama.

The highlight of the day was Green Sunday at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Virginia was front and center throughout the evening. Before the concert Dominion hosted a reception to honor Governor Tim Kaine, one of the sponsors of the event. In his remarks, Bill McDonough quoted Thomas Jefferson who wrote the earth belongs to the living. We are its stewards and must protect it. Governor Kaine took the stage at the concert and asked if anyone in the audience didn't know how many homes they had. This of course was met with a great roar of laughter.
