Report on Economic Recovery House Meeting - Sunday Feb. 8

Hi everyone,

Nine people came together this afternoon to discuss the recovery plan, share our stories, and plan how to continue our local activities in support of the President. Thanks to everyone who attended, and for those who had to miss it...

The Obama organization is asking everyone to share their stories on how the economic crisis is affecting us. Here's how they describe this effort:

"Invite your guests to share their personal stories, particularly how they pertain to the current economic situation.

• How has the current economy affected your life?

• How is the recession affecting our community?

• What aspects of the current economic climate do we feel need to be addressed immediately?

• Why is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan important to you?

Then share your stories with us. You could create a video, write your stories, share pictures that tell your stories or call 1-888-64-CHANGE (1-888-642-4264) to tell your stories. We're counting on you to collect the real stories of how the economic crisis is affecting Americans. We'll make sure your stories are heard in order to continue to build support for the economic recovery plan."

As to local activities, we decided to do the following:

- spread the word about the need for the President's economic recovery plan

- support the philosophy to "buy local"

- expand our email communications, if we can get one or two volunteers to work on this

- implement a phone tree (Jay will set this up)

- coordinate with the local Democratic Committee (Ellen, chair)

- encourage the Selectboard to get a "shovel ready" stimulus plan project to the voters in March

January 20, 2009 - Flag Day

"I would like to see January 20, 2009 be the day when the largest number of American flags are flown in the history of the planet."

Now this will probably happen anyway, without any boost by the official or unofficial Obama community. But maybe we should do something. The flag is such an important symbol to me that part of "taking back our country" is also "taking back our flag." After 9/11 and the Iraq War, the flag has been corrupted into a synonym for arrogant U.S. military aggression, and I'm so looking forward to having it back for us to illustrate good old love of country and all of us working together for a common purpose.

Under Obama, Web Would Be the Way
Unprecedented Online Outreach Expected

CHICAGO -- Armed with millions of e-mail addresses and a political operation that harnessed the Internet like no campaign before it, Barack Obama will enter the White House with the opportunity to create the first truly "wired" presidency.

Obama aides and allies are preparing a major expansion of the White House communications operation, enabling them to reach out directly to the supporters they have collected over 21 months without having to go through the mainstream media.

Just as John F. Kennedy mastered television as a medium for taking his message to the public, Obama is poised to transform the art of political communication once again, said Joe Trippi, a Democratic strategist who first helped integrate the Internet into campaigning four years ago.

"He's going to be the first president to be connected in this way, directly, with millions of Americans," Trippi said.

The nucleus of that effort is an e-mail database of more than 10 million supporters. The list is considered so valuable that the Obama camp briefly offered it as collateral during a cash-flow crunch late in the campaign, though it wound up never needing the loan, senior aides said. At least 3.1 million people on the list donated money to Obama.

Millions more made up the volunteer corps that organized his enormous rallies, registered millions of voters and held countless gatherings to plug the senator to friends and neighbors. On Election Day, they served as the backbone of Obama's get-out-the-vote operation, reaching voters by phone and at the front door, serving coffee at polling stations and babysitting so parents could stand in line at voting precincts.

After Obama declared victory, his campaign sent a text message announcing that his supporters hadn't heard the last from the president-elect. Obama conveyed a similar message to his staff in a campaignwide conference call Wednesday, signaling that his election was the beginning, and not the culmination, of a political movement.

Accordingly, the president-elect's http://www.change.gov transition Web site features a blog and a suggestion form, signaling the kinds of direct and instantaneous interaction that the Obama administration will encourage, perhaps with an eye toward turning its following into the biggest special-interest group in Washington.

Once Obama is sworn in, those backers may be summoned to push reluctant members of Congress to support legislation, to offer feedback on initiatives and to enlist in administration-supported causes in local communities. Obama would also be positioned to ask his supporters to back his favored candidates with fundraising and turnout support in the 2010 midterm elections.

"There's this network of people now," said Martha Page, a neighborhood leader in Warren County, outside Cincinnati, where Obama managed to reduce a traditionally large Republican vote margin. Page received six calls Wednesday from volunteers looking for new assignments. "It's a sea change," she said.

People in technology circles have been musing for months about how Obama would use his list, said Peter Daou, who oversaw Internet operations for the Senate campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.). "Once you have people connected through a network, you can't disconnect. It's like unbreaking an egg. People all across the country have formed these groups to support Obama. They've worked together for a successful purpose," Daou said. "You don't let go of that easily."

But Daou noted that the initiative could have a downside. Obama faced an intense backlash when he broke from the left on the issue of immunity for telecommunications companies that took part in the warrantless wiretapping program. "People who have helped you reach this historic goal by self-organizing can also organize in opposition to your policies," he said.

As part of the presidential transition, Obama officials are looking to add a significant "new media" component to the White House communications operation. The campaign employed 95 people in its Internet operation, building a user-friendly Web site that served as a platform for grass-roots activities and distributed statements, policy positions and footage of Obama events. The White House Web operation will follow a similar but probably more ambitious path, transition officials said.

The process is just beginning, and many questions remain unanswered. The simplest approach might be to convert the campaign organization into an incarnation aimed at 2012 and an anticipated run for reelection, but some inside the Obama team are concerned about appearing too overtly political. Another course could be to create a nonprofit organization. Obama officials said all options would be examined over the coming weeks.

Over the course of the campaign, Obama's e-mail list gathered not only names and contact information, but also details about issues important to those supporters.

In past years, such lists were considered useful tools for political campaigns but not particularly helpful for governing. But Peter Greenberger, manager of political advertising for Google, said such information could be a boon for Obama in building public support for policy proposals.

The White House could "geo-target" ads so they appear online in congressional districts where members remain undecided. Obama could use Internet ads to solicit signatures for petitions, or he could place display and video ads contextually -- so they would appear on the screen next to news coverage of his proposals.

"If there's an article in the New York Times or The Washington Post about health-care legislation," Greenberger said, "the administration or a pro-Obama advocacy organization could run an ad right alongside it."

Republicans have also seen the potential value in organizing online. In recent days, a small group of prominent young Republicans launched a Web site, http://www.rebuildtheparty.com, calling on their party's next chairman to use the Internet to organize and galvanize their grass roots.

"Online organizing is by far the most efficient way to transform our party structures to be able to compete against what is likely to be a $1 billion Obama re-election campaign in 2012," the Web site says.

About 30 of us townspeople helped count the paper ballots tonight. Here are the results:

Obama 680 63%

McCain 406 37%

Total ballots 1114

Total registered voters about 1300

Total new voters today about 70

Total absentee ballots about 140

Turnout about 86%

These numbers are amazing! And this is in a town where, before today, there were 250 registered Democrats and 256 registered Republicans. Thanks to the volunteers and staffers for all your work! And thanks to the people of Westmoreland!

5. Absentee Ballots. We'll also have some of the request forms at Georgiana's. You just fill out the form, mail it to the town, and they will send out the actual ballot and instructions.

Thank you for participating in a Platform for Change Meeting in your community and for submitting your report.

The Platform Drafting Committee met last weekend in Cleveland, Ohio.

We closely reviewed all 1,200 reports and the message was clear -- Americans are hungry for change on the economy, health care, energy, and the environment.

Other top issues include education, national security, foreign policy, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I took the liberty of adding that last point to the education category, stemming from a comment someone made (I think maybe it was Susan). My description went a bit beyond what we actually talked about at the meeting, and reflects my personal take on it as I was thinking about it later.

Our next meeting is planned for Thursday, Aug. 28, again at June's house, where we'll have a few "pre-game" festivities and then watch Sen. Obama's acceptance speech from the convention.

This time, we will be discussing the party platform, and coming up with several specific policy proposals. "Every four years, the Democratic Party assembles a platform that outlines the party's position on a variety of issues. This year, everyday people all across America will hold Platform Meetings to help build the Democratic Party's platform for change from the bottom up." We have started a new initiative and a new group, "10,000,000 Prayers for Peace"--here's the description:

With everything going on in the nation and the world, the typical American has lost touch with the ongoing reality of the Iraq War and the people affected by it. See for example, http://people-press.org/report/401/awareness-of-iraq-war-fatalities-plummets

The purpose of this group is to help us make a positive impact by having thousands of us direct our thoughts and prayers to the human scale of the war, to those currently serving, to those who have given their lives, to their families, and also to the many civilians.

Specifically, we encourage you to bring to your church each week, during the sharing of joys and concerns, a request for prayers for American military people and their families, with a remembrance of those killed in Iraq most recently.

Transitioning to local action

Over the past few months, I've made thousands of phone calls and had hundreds of conversations. Now last weekend, I volunteered all day at the Unity, NH event on Friday, and then hosted my Unite for Change house party Saturday. I'll now be continuing to work locally in my town with the group we have begun. My question is: what tasks are there going to be for the National Call Team? Our calling made tremendous sense as the primaries rolled from state to state, but now we've all got our local work to do, and I'm not sure what there is to do on a national level, or how much time I'll have free to be a part of it.

Finally, after the long wait, our "pre-show" work was over and all of the volunteers went through security. By this time, there was standing room only, but we had a good view and had binoculars. I thought Hillary gave her best speech yet, and the two of them looked like they were getting along together very well. Finally, the brick oven pizza arrived for the hungry volunteers, so yes there was such a thing as a free lunch. The rain held off all day until about an hour after the show ended, and the guests still waiting for bus rides could crowd under a tent. All in all, a wonderful event.

Unity NH - Part 1

It was great to be in Unity NH last Friday, one of maybe 100 volunteers. We were assigned various tasks and given the mission to do everything we could to make sure that every one of the 6000 or so guests had a great time. It was a tremendously impressive operation for the campaign to be able to pull this off with about three days notice.

Hello Westmoreland House Party Goers,
I wanted to thank all of you for joining me this Saturday for the Unite for Change House Party. Both nationally and locally, the day was considered a huge success and it couldn't have been without your support. Also, another thank you special shout out to Roy, Jane, and Benjamin for opening their home to us. (The strawberries were DELICIOUS.)

Another quick update- the national "kick off to canvassing" will take place on July 12. We are hoping to get a great group going for Westmoreland. If anyone knows anyone who would like to offer their home as the "home base," please pass their name along to me or ask them personally (they know, like, and respect YOU better than ME, keep that in mind!) We don't even have to use the actual house... a lawn with a little table would be great. With that said, who would like to canvass on Saturday, July 12? I know it's a couple weeks off, but I thought I'd let you all know so calendars can be marked, friends can be notified, walking shoes can be dusted off, etc.

This news is more than three months old, but I just ran across it: Americans in general are not paying much attention to the Iraq war, and have lost touch with the number of U.S. deaths.

So what can we do about this? What if we did something during church? What if during the sharing of joys and concerns, we asked for prayers for the families of the (fill in the number of) people who were killed in Iraq and Afganistan that week or month, and also mentioned the total?

(I realize that U.S. military deaths are only the tip of the iceberg. So far in June, there have been 29 U.S. military deaths--total now 4113, and at least 422 Iraqi Security Forces and Civilian Deaths. And this is just Iraq.)

It explains what has always been a mystery to me, how it can be that when people (usually from my point of view, opposition politicians) repeat the "big lie" over and over again, a fairly high percentage of people end up believing it. And you will see in the article that the way to combat this is NOT to repeat and deny the lie, but to out-repeat them by stating and restating the truth.

So let us keep saying, for example, "Sen. Obama is a Christian--the most devout Christian in Democratic presidential politics in a quarter century."

I'm going to the event in Unity, NH tomorrow, and I would like to promote the idea that we wear t-shirts and buttons from lots of different candidates to show how we are all coming together with Barack. So dig out your shirts featuring Hillary Clinton of course, but also Bill Richardson, John Edwards, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Dennis Kucinich, and even Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, and Ron Paul. I'll be there in my Kucinich shirt.

the media and the financing decision

I listened to several news programs' coverage of the Obama campaign's decision to opt out of federal campaign financing. I was disappointed that none of them covered the complete story as I see it.

I am going to stop listening to KCRW's Left Right & Center and to Shields and Brooks. They both gave a totally simplistic explanation that Obama had made a promise, and now blatantly broke his promise for selfish political reasons.

The regular NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and The Diane Rehm Show did a little better job.

The points that Senator Obama has consistently made from the beginning are (1) he is strongly in favor of a public financing system that is fair, and (2) he and John McCain agreed to try to work out a deal to that effect. Lately, it has become clear to me, and I presume to Sen. Obama, that there was no way to achieve the "fair" balance in this general election. For example...

In May, Sen. McCain and the RNC together raised $44 million dollars. Contributions to the national committees do not have the $2300 limit that applies to money going directly to candidates, so the big money donors are still very much in play.

The 527s and state and national party groups are also outside any overall spending limits. Sen. McCain has consistently failed to reign in these groups, With the North Carolina attack ad, for example, he got it both ways: he decried the ad, and then it ran anyway.

Finally, even if there were some way to get dollar parity, even that would not be fair in the present election climate. Sen. Obama has to somehow be able to respond to all the ridiculous smears from the Republican news media such as Fox News with their absurd "terrorist fist bump" and the continuing barrage of similar personal attacks.

So to conclude, it seems to me that Sen. Obama's financing decision is completely consistent with his long-held views. I look forward to his being in the White House and leading the way to propose new legislation in this difficult area.

Wesley Clark for VP?

He also happens to be a director and proponent of wind energyhttp://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1214149085/bctid1599946637 Clark seems to meet lots of important criteria for a VP (in no particular order):- military or foreign policy experience. (Actually, I think Barack is already great in this area, and has a much better understand of world reality due to his background, but the PERCEPTION seems to be sticking that he is weak in this area.)- older than Obama, but not too old (Clark is 63)- has already shown the ambition to be president, in this case by being a candidate in 2004- geographic balance (Clark is from Arkansas)- not a woman (the Hillary supporters I have heard from say they would interpret a woman VP other than Hillary to be a token gesture, or just pandering to Hillary partisans)- not an African American- a strong Hillary supporter- an opponent of the Iraq war- smart (Clark was first in his class at West Point)- would pass the vetting test- would make a good president- not afraid to be an independent thinker- makes a good impression in person and on TV. (I saw him in person in 2004. He held a town hall meeting, and I was impressed with his command of the room.)- not a current US senator (to balance the ticket)- has leadership experience (such as being a governor) Another person who does well with the above list is Bill Richardson. Clark has experience as a candidate in a presidential campaign in 2004 and he helped many Democrats get elected in 2006. He was the most requested surrogate in 2006 except for Obama. He has extensive experience dealing with the media. He was first in his class at Westpoint. He was against the war from the start. He has an understanding of course of foreign policy but also a broad range of progressive issues.

The job of a VP is to help get the candidate elected, as well as other candidates down the ballot. This requires knowing how to engage in a political fight with the opposition and win. Clark has that ability. It's not just that he's a four-star general, it's much, much more than that.And the campaign I assure you sees his ties with Clinton as a BIG PLUS.

I've finally gotten some phone numbers in my time zone, so I've been able to connect with calls to supporters, asking them to host local events for Sen. Obama. These are great calls to make! About two of every three people I talk to say YES to hosting an event, and half of those who have to say NO then say YES to making phone calls. With that kind of a response rate, what an impact we can have with these phone calls!

Need Time Zones for Calling

Our current calling campaign is to "thank fellow supporters for their involvement in this campaign for change and ask them to participate in Vote for Change to register new voters. " However, there seems to be a time zone glitch. The call page says "This campaign is available between 11:00AM and 8:00PM CDT only." and this seems to be true, as it wouldn't let me call after 9 PM Eastern Time. However, the call list I had was to Oregon, where it's three hours earlier.

There are several ways to handle this, but I would suggest letting us pick which time zone, or which state we want to call. Thanks.

For people calling South Dakota--We need a link on the state page so folks we find to go to South Dakota can fill out the on line sign up form. Previous states had a big button. The page is there, but there's no link to it, except on our call page, which the people we talk to can't get to. They need to get to page

The easiest way to do this I've found is to go to the South Dakota page, which is

http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/sdhome

Then have them delete the stuff to the right of "page/"

and have them type in "s/cometosd" in its place.

I've found it a lot better to have folks fill out the form themselves--if I lead them to it to make sure they get there.

These are among the most fun types of calls to make--looking for people who are happy to drop everything and go the Kentucky in the next few days to help out with the campaign. I've been calling every night until I get one or two people to make the trip--very rewarding calls, and folks are really happy to hear from me, even if it doesn't work out for them to go.

I've finished my Pennsylvania calls tonight, and I'd like to relate an idea from one of the people I talked to. She said she hadn't been flying her American flag the last few years because it seemed to have become a symbol for seeking revenge for 9/11 or for supporting the Iraq war. But she's going to put out her flag again, proudly, beginning on the day of President Obama's inauguration.

Democratic National Convention to Showcase Environmentalism

Democratic officials revealed details on how they plan to use Denver's

hosting of the party's national convention to showcase their commitment to

the environment. Included in an effort to cut carbon emissions from the

travel of the more than 6,000 delegates and alternates. The DNCC is working

with a company to offer bulk-rate carbon credits to offset emissions.

Delegations that reduce emissions the most will be honored. Individual

delegates can win special prizes. The DNCC also is using online booking for

hotel stays to keep as much as 100,000 pages from being printed. Its fleet

of official cars uses flex fuels. DNCC employees don't have trashcans in

their offices to keep them focused on recycling. They're asked not to print

what can remain on the screen, and when they do print, it's on both sides of

the page. They don't use disposable plastic water bottles at the office.

Day-long workshops have been held with local hotel and restaurant managers

on such things as water conservation and energy efficiency. The workshops

are meant to instill practices that will continue after the parties are

over. When the convention arrives, officials promise recycling opportunities

on every corner, local foods highlighted at restaurants, and bikes and
