The Obama Organizing for America initiative is beginning with a major volunteer involvement with the Economic Recovery Plan. Economic Recovery House Meetings will be held during the weekend of February 6th.

If you'd like to get involved, here's the details for action:

This is a special message for neighborhood team leaders and volunteers who showed tremendous dedication during the campaign.

I want to give you a heads up about a major initiative Organizing for America is planning to get people involved in President Obama's economic recovery plan. It's our first official effort, so I want to make sure you are part of it.

We'll be reaching out to our full list soon to encourage everyone to host or attend an Economic Recovery House Meeting during the weekend of February 6th. As a community leader, you can play a crucial role in helping folks understand how the recovery plan will affect their lives.

The first step is to learn more by joining a special conference call at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, February 3rd. I'll be on the call along with David Plouffe, Obama for America Campaign Manager, and Mitch Stewart, Executive Director of Organizing for America.

Hello SE Volusia Leadership Team,

The campaign was able to provide me with two tickets to the swearing in ceremony tomorrow.

I want to let you all know that as I am listening to Obama's Swearing In Ceremony tomorrow, I will be thinking about every one of you. I will be thinking about our leadership team meetings, our volunteer recruitment meetings, your willingness to step up and be a leader in this campaign, your persistence, your smiles, and the looks on your faces that told me you were in this to win.

I will never forget those long, hot, Florida Summer days in August & September. I will never forget the ups, the downs, and the obsession for yards signs.

Trough thick and thin, all of you could be counted on and you were all leaders in the most historic campaign in history.

I have memories about each one of you and I will be remembering all of it tomorrow when Obama takes his oath of office. If you're watching it live, I will be the tall guy on the left side of the lawn. For those of you meeting at Mi Mexico, please have a Margarita for me.

It's just hard to believe that tomorrow is both the culmination of the tremendous work you volunteers did during the campaign and at the same time, the beginning of such difficult and effort laden times ahead to make our dream for this country come to be.

I congratulate you volunteers! Many of you have been on-line and in New Smyrna for Obama since 2007. The friendship and feeling of family with this group has been the exact parallel to the hope we all had for this country to assure Barack Obama became the next POTUS.

We have our 'casual' get together tomorrow to celebrate the Inaugration of Barack Obama as President and i am looking forward to seeing many of you there that were so involved in this election struggle last fall.

The TV viewing isn't the greatest at Mi Mexico but the friendship and inspiration we'll have with each other (and don't forget the reasonalby priced food and Margaritas) will overcome all shortcomings.

There was an excellent Health Care Discussion held in New Smyrna Beach on January 30th, 2008 that was activly attended and produced an exceptional report detailing the difficulties and opportunities for health care policy in our country.

The event was hosted by Pat Wilson and the report was written and edited by Diana Barden, Trudy Duffy, Donatella Young, and Mary Lou Schropp.

The Presidential Transitional Health Policy Team, headed by Tom Daschle, is reaching out to local communities to begin the process of reform by better understanding your concerns. They are encouraging Americans across the nation to host and attend Health Care Community discussions before the end of the year. And, Tom Daschle, Secretary-Designate to Health and Human Services, will attend several of these gatherings!

Healthcare is a necessity for all, not a privilege for some. The very ideals that America is built upon cannot exist without it. The most fundamental conditions needed to support equal opportunity and the pursuit of happiness in any democratic society must include access to health care for all.

This is the first time an administration is trying this type of grass roots idea gathering, reaching out and directly involving the American people in their own government. We ask you to make a special effort at this very busy season to attend. It's been 2 days now since the election and finally, a feeling of elation has set in after the adrenalin days leading up to the election.

What a night, what super volunteers, what emotion, what a new beginning for our country.

Barack Obama has been elected President of the United States of America.

You made it happen! A special thanks goes out to all you New Smyrna for Obama team members and all who have read and contributed to these postings.

We went into election day here in New Smyrna Beach, Florida with over 500 local volunteers hitting the streets, phone calling any and all in the area, providing Courtesy Stations at polling locations, dispatching and driving voters to the polls, and providing food and drink for all the above. Thanks to all, what a group, what a day, what an inspirational start to the next administration.

There were NO dry eyes at the celebration on election night now let's put that ground swell of inspiration and volunteers to the tough tasks ahead for President Elect Barack Obama .

Keep active, keep support flowing, and remember when we started this online group about 18 months ago, YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL, YES WE DID!!!

Biggest Event for Barack Yet!

THE BIGGEST OBAMA EVENT YET! NEIGHBORHOOD WALK FOR BARACK

We have a GOTV event scheduled for this coming Saturday, October 25th, 2008 that can’t be missed by all you great volunteers out there!Here's the general idea:

We'll have a large number of volunteers walking in each of our 5 team areas in SE Volusia County knocking on doors and finding frendly voters.
Lists generated from the 'friendly' contacts we’ve already made will be contacted to discover if they have voted early at the NSB Library.
If not, we'll encourage them to Get Out and Vote and offer rides if necessary. Shuttles will be available from each of the 5 team areas to get our voters back and forth to the Library.
Provide water and help at the Library for all shuttle voters.

If you'd like to support our Neighborhood Walk for Barack, come on down to our HQ at 505 Canal St. in New Smyrna Beach and we'll sign you up for your area and let you know where you can help.

A prayer for Toot.

This is a message sent to me from WonderlandPR and I thought you might like to see it:

Barack Obama, beyond the rare repertoire of roaring rhetoric and retort, beyond the sweeping scope of policy and polemics, there is a man, who, once upon a time was a boy, raised by Toot and her husband, Barack's maternal grandparents.

Now, Toot, Mrs. Dunham, is in need of the man we all have entrusted to guide our American family into its precarious future, as she lies in precarious health.

From his departure from the critical campaign, we who have worked for and with Barack for all these months, know that very little can stop Barack.

Do you remember him being sick and off the trail? No. Do you remember the times he had to leave the campaign to tend to a daughters' crisis? No. Did you ever see him explode in anger or breakdown in frustration? No.

Now this.

So we know that Barack's humanity, his very humannessm is being called by the call to return to Hawaii and Toot.

I must admit I have prayed for an intervention to give Barack some respite from the slings and arrows of the last weeks of the nasty campaign by McCain en company, but I did not pray for this.

God works in mysterious ways. Perhaps this is an answered prayer.

I hope you might join me in wishing Barack Godspeed to Toot's side and that he is restored in his pending sorrow by the loving supporters that so many of us have become.

We ARE all in this together. Never have those words been more true.

Please let's make an effort to fill the crater of space that Barack leaves as he leaves to be with Toot before they must leave each other for all times.

And, if anyone sees or hears Palin or McCain grinding Barack down while Obama tends to the call that comes to us all, PLEASE FIGHT THE SMEARS AND MAKE THEM WISH THEY HAD NEVER OPENED THEIR MOUTHS AT A TIME LIKE THIS.

We all owe Toot our honoring prayers, as she vitally helped shape the man who, if we work our butts off, will be our next President. As Barack has said, she poured everything she had into him, and now we pour our hearts out for them both.

Kurt and the army of Obama Volunteers got it done last weekend! Here's Kurt's note:

Dear SE Volusia Obama/Biden Volunteers,

We had a fabulous weekend in New Smyrna & Edgewater this weekend!

16,000+ doors were knocked on this weekend in Central Florida for Obama/Biden !

Our volunteers knocked on over 250 doors this weekend on the Westside of New Smyrna!
Gerrit, our canvass capt. trained eight new volunteers this weekend how to canvass and they loved it! 20 year old Ahman Washington in New Smyrna Beach, who serves in the Army, peeked out his front window and saw an Obama button. He quickly opened up his door and wanted to know what we were doing in his neighboorhood and quickly stated "are you really with the Obama Campaign? Ahman expressed his strong disillusionment with what has happened in the last few years as he kept his glazed eyes focused on the Obama button. As our volunteer walked away, he yelled, "hey, I want to vote for my first time, how do I do that". He is now registered to vote and assured that he would get his grandmother and other familiy members out to vote for the next President of the United States!

We registered over 30 new voters this weekend at the Green Fest & Ritters Ice Cream !
While registering voters Friday, Sue Jones helped two life long Republicans switch their party to Democrat! While...Trudy Duffy and her voter registration team ensured that everyone at the Green Fest saw Obama buttons and were asked to register to vote...at least two or three times! They were able to bring in over 16 registrations. Lynne Finnelli in Edgewater ensured that we were a presence at the grand opening of Ritters Ice Cream and reminded voters this is the one time in our history that we all need to vote!

Over 18 volunteers from the area contributed their efforts this weekend! We could double our efforts if you joined our team today!

On Tuesday, at our first formal phone bank, Pat Wilson and her phone bank team broke the record by making over 550 phone calls to SE Volusia voters!
Kara Walker, an intern from New Smyrna Beach High-school expressed how she loves to make phone calls and told us about several phone calls where voters expressed that having an office in New Smyrna Beach makes them feel just an arms lenght away from Obama! Meanwhile, Marcia Hudgins used her great communications skills to make over 112 phone calls and persuade a couple of Repubicans to go ahead and switch their parties-

I had a freind request this morning from an individual with such a straight forward yet moving and profound rationale as to why she supports Barack that i wanted to post it here for all our Barack Obama supporters to see:

Why I support Barack Obama: I know that he will respect the office of the Presidency and when various situations occur, he will work to bring those opposed to his policies to the table to discuss their differences. He will work to bridge any and all divides in Congress. Most importantly he will use his diplomatic skills to set foreign policies that are respected all over the world. I know that he does not possess all the answers to domestic and foreign policies, but I trust him to seek answers from those persons that do possess the knowledge. Finally, I am certain that his Presidency will hold his wife Michelle in high esteem for all to admire and respect. She is a strong shining example of an American woman--strong, intelligent, beautiful, resilient, professional, humble, and unselfish in sharing her children, her husband, and herself with other Americans. Thank God for change.

Welcome to Obama'08 blogging all you hard working Party Builder Bloggers!

I actually began here on barackobama.com in 2007 and then joined the DNC Party Builder site a few months ago. I was posting here for additonal Obama supporters to also head over to PB since i was shocked to see some of you getting hammered over there by divisive minded blog bullies.

I wasn't asking for people to bring the 'hammer' down but to get some of our bloggers here that represent the issues fairly and promote the positive politics of Barack Obama to join us there.

Many responded and have joined the efforts there but you'll find rewarding and thoughtful refuge here among the thousands of Obama and Democratic supporters.

I'm interested in your reaction to my post on PB a few days ago after reading one negative post after another just after the 4th of July:

'Good morning Dem and Obama Family.

It's just surprising to see the amount of attacks, complaining, and negative bias against Obama on this 'Democratic Party' DNC web page.

This is one of the best candidates the Democratic Party has produced in the last 60 years and those of you railing on this web page against him, well, remember the saying, be careful what you wish for, you may just get it.

Obama is the new understanding of american content, dreams, hopes, principles, and aspirations that have been been missing in politics for generations and i'm not sure it 'must' be associated with any one formal 'party', a faction of which seems intent on 'radicalizing' and 'polorizing' the once faithful democrats.

This is a time to stand for Democratic principles and the chosen presumptive nominee of that Party.

Beware radical and liberal zealots (railing on my brother and myself here), for i fear we could loose Obama as 'ours' to the masses of hopeful citizens that are re-awakening to politics and an understaning of patriotism.

It seems the time has come to just ignore the 'radical' postings on this site and withhold any comments or ratings for them. The only interest they will receive is from other 'discontents' and most will move on to sites where rabblerousing is in vogue.

We have a positive message and job to do for Barack Obama and this site can be a major factor in that effort.

The Obama Campaign has stated the most important thing we can be doing right now is to register voters.

New Smyrna for Obama has just completed 3 voter registration training events and we're ready to hit the streets.

If you haven't had the training but would like to help in New Smyrna Beach, send an email to the whole group (on the group page under list serv) with your interest. Those that have had the training will return the emails and then times and places can be worked out for the voter registrations effort between those that respond.

It doesn't have to be a formal effort, once you've worked with a trained member, you can go anywhere you wish and sign up voters.. The trained members of the group have all the forms needed. It's that easy.

There is a session in Daytona on Monday the 23rd for some training for all volunteers that wish to get more familiar with the process for upcoming voter registration drives.

Here's the details:

Monday June 23rd, at the Daytona Beach Community College in the U.C.F. Auditorium located in building 150, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. *Vote Builder workshop will be held at 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This workshop is open to all Democrats interested in volunteering in the 2008 election.

Earlier today (5-28-08), Barack spoke at the MESA campus in Thornton, Colorado. The Washington Post reported:

For more than 20 minutes, the Illinois Democrat laced the language of uplift and challenge with the acronyms of education and reform: GEAR UP and TRIO, a proposed Service Scholarship program to replace retiring teachers, a Teacher Residency Program to recruit them at mid-career from other professions, and the Career Ladder Initiative to reward teachers who mentor others.

In a snug auditorium packed with education professionals, the loudest cheers greeted his critique of President Bush's No Child Left Behind initiative, which Obama blasted for forcing teachers and students to spend most of the year preparing for a single, high-stakes standardized test without offering sufficient resources.

But in the end, the message from the stage really did seem to be that it's about one person making a difference.

LONDON (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said on Sunday he expects Democratic superdelegates to reveal their choice for presidential nominee soon after the final primary in June and that Hillary Clinton will then have to quit the race.

In an interview with Sky News, Carter said he did not think Clinton was achieving anything by staying in the fight.

"I think not. But of course she has the perfect right to do so," he said while attending a literary festival in Britain.

"I'm a superdelegate ... I think a lot of the superdelegates will make a decision quite, announced quite rapidly, after the final primary on June 3," he told Sky News.

"I have not yet announced publicly, but I think at that point it will be time for her to give it up," Carter said.

We have won an absolute majority of all the delegates chosen by the people in this Democratic primary process.
From the beginning, this journey wasn't about me or the other candidates. It was about a simple choice -- will we continue down the same road with the same leadership that has failed us for so long, or will we take a different path?

I know how you feel.

As wholeheartedly as I support Barack Obama, I know you feel the same about Hillary Clinton. Politics is not for the faint of heart, I know because it's broken mine more than once.

You've put all of your effort, heart, soul (and money) into supporting your candidate. You believe that your candidate is the only person for the job and you don't understand why everyone else doesn't feel that way. You've focused on getting them elected to the exclusion of almost everything else. And when it's over, you feel empty.

I know how you feel.

I have sat in a daze in front of the TV waiting for a mistake or fraud to come to light that would change the outcome of the election. I have kicked the wall and sprained my ankle (and put a hole in the wall). I have cried myself to sleep in complete misery. I have felt hatred in my heart,

I know how you feel.

My mom was the one that finally put an end to my blue funk. She told me that I should be proud of myself for becoming involved and not let the loss by my candidate make me lose sight of why I got involved in the first place. I got involved to make a difference. I got involved because so many things were wrong in our country that I could no longer sit on the sidelines and just watch anymore.

So, be proud of yourself for all that you've done. It is ALL of our continued involvement that will force our government to truly be OUR government. It is OUR involvement that makes our country a DEMOCRACY. Remember why you got involved in the first place, remember the big picture.

We need to bring our troops home & take care of them, we need to strengthen our economy & create good jobs, we need to become less energy dependent & improve our environment. We need to educate all of our children & provide affordable accessable healthcare for all, we need to speak to our friends & our ememies and improve our battered image around the world.

The GOP has resorted to outright lies in this campaign – and it’s only May.

The primary process isn’t even officially over yet, and prominent GOP officials – members of the leadership of the House – are already distorting Barack Obama’s words beyond any boundaries of truthfulness.

But -- as we saw last night in Mississippi -- if the GOP thinks they can steal this election with the old playbook of fears and smears, they have another thing coming.

For those of you that haven’t heard, here’s the story on the most recent lies about Barack’s words. In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic, Barack Obama mentioned that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a “sore” that was affecting the entire Middle East and our foreign policy. Look, this is just not a controversial statement in any way. But, as I said in a post on Huffington Post yesterday:

But of course, today, rather than seriously disputing that, or, even better, offering a vision of their own on how to find peace in the Middle East and security for Israel, Rep. John Boehner and Rep. Eric Cantor – senior leadership in the House GOP -- decided to ignore the actual meaning of English words and simply invent something Barack Obama didn’t say. Here is what they said
Israel is a critical American ally and a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, not a ‘constant sore’ as Barack Obama claims. -- John Boehner
It is truly disappointing that Senator Obama called Israel a ‘constant wound,’ ‘constant sore,’ and that it ‘infect[s] all of our foreign policy.’ These sorts of words and characterizations are the words of a politician with a deep misunderstanding of the Middle East and an innate distrust of Israel. -- Eric Cantor
This is so mendacious that the objective journalist Jeffrey Goldberg himself felt compelled to reply. He writes:
I have no doubt that Mr. Boehner will issue a correction to his press release in which he states the obvious, which is that Obama expressed -- in twelve different ways -- his support for Israel to me.
If he doesn't, however, I would, sadly, have to agree with my colleague, the less-forgiving Andrew Sullivan, who called Boehner's statement a "flat-out lie." In fact, I would add to Andrew's post, by calling Boehner's statement mendacious, duplicitous, gross, and comically refutable. So Mr. Boehner, do the right thing, and correct the record. I'll be happy to post the correction right here.
These statements by Representatives Boehner and Cantor are so bad they rise to the level of a danger to our foreign policy. America’s allegiance to Israel has always been bi-partisan and unshakeable. It still is, with either Sen. McCain, Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton as President. But how can we actually have a debate on foreign policy, if the other side simply makes up statements on which to base phony, contrived outrage?

As I point out in that post, Barack Obama said exactly the opposite of what Boehner and Cantor claim. Barack spoke movingly about the inspiration he draws from Israel’s struggle for independence and ongoing struggle for security, and how the Zionist movement for a homeland resonates with his own heritage. But Boehner and Cantor just ignored the meaning of his words and bashed him for something he didn’t say.

We have important issues to debate, vital challenges to face, but statements like these from Boehner and Cantor simply evade the issues in an attempt at character assassination. In the post yesterday, I urged everyone to take action against this. We can’t sit idly by and condemn, we need to fight back.

Already we’ve seen John McCain trying to describe Barack Obama as Hamas’ candidate. That’s beneath the John McCain I used to know. But – sadly – that is the only way the Republicans have to try and win an election
We deserve better. We need to have an honest and important conversation about how to reorient our foreign policy to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
What we don’t need are lies, distortions, and rhetoric designed only to distract. That’s part of what got us into this mess, and it won’t get us out.
Call Sen. McCain’s campaign at (703) 418-2008 and ask him to condemn these statements from his supporters.

Already, the truth has been backed up on this by journalists from Andrew Sullivan to Joe Klein. We need to make sure John McCain knows we’re watching, and to make clear he’s accountable for those speaking for his campaign.

We can be sure that the Republicans will keep trying. It’s all they have left - all the polls show the public has rejected their failed policies. So they resort to the thing they fall back on when the going gets tough: smears. As one GOP operative said to Time Magazine , “It’ll be Swiftboat times five.”

Well, they can try it, but we’re on to their game. We must continue to battle these lies and smears until we bury this style of politics once and for all this November. If we work hard, we can sweep the modern GOP from the field, and repudiate the politics of fear and smear once and for all.

WASHINGTON - A leader of the Democratic Party under Bill Clinton has switched his allegiance to Barack Obama and is encouraging fellow Democrats to "heal the rift in our party" and unite behind the Illinois senator.

Joe Andrew, who was Democratic National Committee chairman from 1999-2001, planned a news conference Thursday in his hometown of Indianapolis to urge other Hoosiers to support Obama in Tuesday's primary, perhaps the most important contest left in the White House race. He also has written a lengthy letter explaining his decision that he plans to send to other superdelegates.

"I am convinced that the primary process has devolved to the point that it's now bad for the Democratic Party," Andrew said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Bill Clinton appointed Andrew chairman of the DNC near the end of his presidency, and Andrew endorsed the former first lady last year on the day she declared her candidacy for the White House.

Andrew said in his letter that he is switching his support because "a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists (Republican) John McCain."

"While I was hopeful that a long, contested primary season would invigorate our party, the polls show that the tone and temperature of the race is now hurting us," Andrew wrote. "John McCain, without doing much of anything, is now competitive against both of our remaining candidates. We are doing his work for him and distracting Americans from the issues that really affect all of our lives."

Andrew said the Obama campaign never asked him to switch his support, but he decided to do so after watching Obama's handling of two issues in recent days. He said Obama took the principled stand in opposing a summer gas tax holiday that both Clinton and McCain supported, even though it would have been easier politically to back it. And he said he was impressed with Obama's handling of the controversy surrounding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Wright's outspoken criticisms of the United States have threatened Obama's candidacy. Obama initially refused to denounce his former pastor, but he did so this week after Wright suggested that Obama secretly agrees with him.

"He has shown such mettle under fire," Andrew said in the interview. "The Jeremiah Wright controversy just reconfirmed for me, just as the gas tax controversy confirmed for me, that he is the right candidate for our party."

Andrew's decision puts Obama closer to closing Clinton's superdelegate lead. Clinton had a big advantage among superdelegates, many of whom like Andrews have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

Obama now trails her by just 19 superdelegates, 244-263. This week, he picked up eight superdelegates while she netted three.

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic Party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can win enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination through state-by-state elections.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1732.5 to 1597.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Other party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August. Andrews wrote in his letter that he is calling for "fellow superdelegates across the nation to heal the rift in our party and unite behind Barack Obama."

It's the second endorsement for Obama this week that could be influential in Indiana. Rep. Baron Hill, who represents a crucial swing district in the state, endorsed Obama on Wednesday. Clinton has the backing of Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who has a vast organization in the state and has been campaigning aggressively with the former first lady.

Obama and Clinton are running close in Indiana and both need a victory there — Obama to help rebound from a loss to Clinton in Pennsylvania and to prove he can win Midwestern voters and Clinton so she can overcome Obama's lead in the race overall.

Rev. Wright now is the very 'distraction' from Barack Obama's authentic discussion of issues and policies of our time that need to be re-thought and re-developed for our country to re-invent the solutions we so desperatly need.

We WILL have mcbush or hillary if the Rev's personal glory trail (the question and answers at the National Press Club) is continued with the backhanded aid and abetting of the inflamatory cable diatribe.

It's not the place of either Sen. Obama or the campaign to get a resolution here. I'm hoping there are some influential Chicago'ans and associates of Rev. Wright who blog with us to bring some sense of balance and resolution to this situation.

Otherwise, it's, YES HE CAN, bring us down.

Energy Policy

I'm pleased to see Sen. Obama make a true effort to attack our country's energy problem.

The current administration has danced their way to millions of dollars in greed $$ for the few, in and out of the administration, with no improvement to the energy debacle that's been with us for 3 decades now.

IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!

Get rid of the corn subsidies (food comodity prices are high enough for the 'real' farmer) and put that money into alternate energy development and technology. Wind, solar, bio-fuels, and yes, most likely even safe nuclear.

Give the food back to the people and use cellulosic technology to use the chaff (instead of the food portion of the plant) if we must have ethanol production.

It's good to see all this come out and discussed in a straightforward and truthful way!

Last night, Senator Clinton used up her last, best chance to cut appreciably into Barack Obama's elected delegate lead.

She came up short.

In fact, she barely made a dent. At most, she picked up a net gain of 12 delegates -- less than our gain, for example, in Colorado (where we gained 17) or Kansas (where we gained 14). Her gain in Pennsylvania was less than half of our gain in Virginia, where we added to our lead by 25 delegates.

But there is one measure by which her campaign's gains are real.

The Clinton campaign claims they've raised $3.5 million dollars since the polls closed yesterday.

We can't afford to let that go unanswered.

After Pennsylvania, we have a lead of at least 159 elected delegates earned through all of the primaries and caucuses so far. We have a total of at least 1493 pledged delegates.

I became so angry as the 1st 45 minutes dragged on that nothing, and I mean nothing but tabloid questions and jabs from those two ABC 'news' people teamed up with Hillary to allow NO substantive discussion of issues from these candidates.

It's the classic distraction politics of separation, polarization and tabloid one-liner's to 'lift' the election from issues of merit and the hope for a better future. It is, and was, the classic politics of the Republican guru, Carl Rove. He was a master of this tactic and now I’m ashamed to say it's our own Hillary Clinton, a democrat, who is using it to divide and conquer the nomination and separate the electorate from the fundamental issues.

As was so well stated in an earlier blog, if you're tired of a slash and burn politics that trades distraction for real debate, you don't have to sit idly and watch anymore. You can speak out, you can organize, make calls, knock doors, donate, and vote. Together, we can change politics in America.

Like most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest.

He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."

At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships. While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams of My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment.

After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.

I watched Russert on Meet the Press this morning with some of the most saavy political operatives that exist today.

If you get past their obvious backing of their respective candidates, you get a common thread.

'Bitter' is going to be run into the bitter ground!

I have a great deal of respect for the managers of our campain. A metered and decisive response to the Wright issue was exceptionally handled. Sen Obama's response was strong and confident. It gave me new respect and faith in our candidate.

It took exactly 10 days to get the focus back on the issues and off 'Obama the candidate with problems'.

What's exactly 9 days from now? We need to get to work!

I have no doubt our campain staff will handle this quickly and forcefully with definition and heavy air time focusing on the true meaning of the 'bitter' that we feel as voters, and then re-focus on the true issues and voters themselves.

'WE THE BLOGGERS' need to get into overdrive to help the campaign refocus on 'our' message.

TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA – At a town hall meeting in Indiana, U.S. Senator Barack Obama made the following comments in response to the Clinton and McCain campaign’s attacks:

“When I go around and I talk to people there is frustration and there is anger and there is bitterness. And what’s worse is when people are expressing their anger then politicians try to say what are you angry about? This just happened – I want to make a point here today.

“I was in San Francisco talking to a group at a fundraiser and somebody asked how’re you going to get votes in Pennsylvania? What’s going on there? We hear that’s its hard for some working class people to get behind you’re campaign. I said, “Well look, they’re frustrated and for good reason. Because for the last 25 years they’ve seen jobs shipped overseas. They’ve seen their economies collapse. They have lost their jobs. They have lost their pensions. They have lost their healthcare.

“And for 25, 30 years Democrats and Republicans have come before them and said we’re going to make your community better. We’re going to make it right and nothing ever happens. And of course they’re bitter. Of course they’re frustrated. You would be too. In fact many of you are. Because the same thing has happened here in Indiana. The same thing happened across the border in Decatur. The same thing has happened all across the country. Nobody is looking out for you. Nobody is thinking about you. And so people end up- they don’t vote on economic issues because they don’t expect anybody’s going to help them. So people end up, you know, voting on issues like guns, and are they going to have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. And they take refuge in their faith and their community and their families and things they can count on. But they don’t believe they can count on Washington. So I made this statement-- so, here’s what rich. Senator Clinton says ‘No, I don’t think that people are bitter in Pennsylvania. You know, I think Barack’s being condescending.’ John McCain says, ‘Oh, how could he say that? How could he say people are bitter? You know, he’s obviously out of touch with people.’

“Out of touch? Out of touch? I mean, John McCain—it took him three tries to finally figure out that the home foreclosure crisis was a problem and to come up with a plan for it, and he’s saying I’m out of touch? Senator Clinton voted for a credit card-sponsored bankruptcy bill that made it harder for people to get out of debt after taking money from the financial services companies, and she says I’m out of touch? No, I’m in touch. I know exactly what’s going on. I know what’s going on in Pennsylvania. I know what’s going on in Indiana. I know what’s going on in Illinois. People are fed-up. They’re angry and they’re frustrated and they’re bitter. And they want to see a change in Washington and that’s why I’m running for President of the United States of America.”

Barack Obama's position on Iraq

On the chance that some in our group may not have been introduced to Barack's position on Iraq, i've included his statement here. This was in response to Bush's speech today however, it defines what his position has been for many months (years) now. Here's his message:

President Bush gave no answer to the most important question about the way forward in Iraq: how will we end this war that is not making us safer? After five years, over four thousand lives, and over half a trillion dollars, we have a blank check strategy in Iraq that is overstretching our military, distracting us from the other challenges we face, burdening our economy, and failing to pressure the Iraqi government to take responsibility for their future. We cannot press Iraq’s leaders to resolve their differences and spend their money if our plan is to stay in Iraq indefinitely. We cannot relieve the enormous strain on our military and our military families unless we restore adequate time at home for our troops – 12 month deployments represent a step forward, but we need to give our troops adequate dwell time at home. We cannot finish the fight in Afghanistan and focus on Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda’s core leadership unless we end this war that should’ve never been authorized. The decision to go to war in Iraq was an enormous strategic blunder, and President Bush is only adding to his disastrous legacy by refusing to show the American people any clear goal or any clear plan to end the war. When I am President, I will bring our combat brigades home in 16 months, engage in the direct diplomacy in the region that is necessary to stabilize Iraq, restore our military strength, and renew our security and standing in the world. Our heroic troops have accomplished every mission that we have given them in Iraq and they have done so brilliantly; it is time to bring them home, and to ask the Iraqis to take responsibility for their country.

Trip to Pennsylvania update

Hello all,

I wanted to update everyone on our Trip to Pennsylvania event.

So far, we've had a few drop out due to work etc. but we've also lined up the remainder with airline tickets for the event so we won't need our April 10th planning meeting.

If you're signed up for the event and haven't checked in lately, i'd like to hear from you soon at 772-283-9965 or via email at rsarcher@ucnsb.net.

Those of you that would like to go, we may be able to get some donated airline tickets for you if you can volunteer for a week or longer..
