Remember this one. Because the last time we saw a presidential campaign like this was in 1968.
... Since then, nobody has stirred the spirit of America like Barack Obama. He is a phenom, and journeyman players can't beat phenoms.
... Normally, the election system is rigged against us. Not so this year. Ohio has a big chance to decide who will be a presidential candidate. And when such a chance comes our way, we ought to use it.
Because if we don't use it this year, it may be decades before our vote is meaningful again.
... There are what, 300 million people in this country? And all we have to show for the people we pick to lead us are Bush-Clinton-Clinton-Bush-Bush-Clinton? On the face of it, isn't there something wrong with that picture?
Let's pick the new kid. I've seen nothing like him since the man 40 years ago who never got to finish his dream.

Last night we saw how important it is to elect a President we can trust. Barack Obama's commitment to fighting for working families, expanding health care to the uninsured, and taking on the lobbyists who shut out the voices of the American people hasn't changed with the politics of the moment, it's been the cause of his life.

Amid all the cheering and sign waving prior to tonight’s Democratic Presidential Debate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was Kathie R. – the very definition of someone who is hungry for change. Kathie braved the chilly weather to show her support for Barack. She hails from Little River, South Carolina where she works at CVS Caremark as a registered nurse. Kathie has three kids who are all supporting Barack Obama as well. She is looking forward to driving voters to the polls this Saturday.

After every Obama town hall meeting, rally, and meet the candidate event in Nevada, volunteers encourage new supporters to sign supporter cards and pledge to caucus for Barack in five days on January 19.

Yesterday, Barack Obama and members of the Culinary Workers Union went door to door to encourage Nevadans and Local 226 members to stand for change in next Saturday's caucus.

Speaking to the Culinary workers at the canvass kickoff event, Obama said:

"This is a time of great economic uncertainty for many Americans. People are working harder for less and paying more for everything from health care, to college tuition, to filling up the gas tank. The time has come to help the middle class reclaim the American dream."

Obama, who began his career as a community organizer, canvassed a Northeast Las Vegas neighborhood with Culinary Workers Union President Geoconda Arguello Kline and Local 226 members. The union represents over 60,000 members in Nevada and announced its endorsement of Obama for President on January 9th. The Obama campaign also took to the doors on Saturday, when volunteers and supporters launched canvasses from hundreds of staging areas across the state.

"The time has come to help homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages, provide relief to those who were ripped off by lenders, and raise the minimum wage so working families can afford the rising costs in this country," Obama continued. "Now is the time to put divisive politics aside and come together as a nation to solve our problems and bring about change we can believe in."

Barack began his full schedule of events today at the Pentecostal Temple Church of God and Christ in Las Vegas. The church filled with music and song as Barack entered the hall.

Before Barack addressed the congregation, Pastor Leon Smith said this:

I just changed my support in the last 72 hours. I have faith in him. And I'm hoping he can sweep this country with nothing but change. Soon enough I look forward to going to Washington and meeting with President Obama.

Barack took to the pulpit and called on the congregants to stand up at this critical moment in American history. Before finishing his speech Barack reflected on a sermon he gave down in Selma, Alabama.

God told Moses that the torch would be passed to Joshua. Joshua was going to lead the chosen people to the promised land. When Joshua found this out he was scared. But God told him that it was time for a new generation to take the lead. Today is no different, it is time for the Joshua Generation to lead. I am part of that generation but no Joshua can lead without those behind him.

Reverend Joseph Lowery Inspires Nevadans

Early this evening, Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery joined a conference call with African Americans for Obama across the state of Nevada. Dr. Lowery spoke about how Senator Obama brings the opportunity to our nation of having a renaissance and how important it is that we elect him so he can bring all Americans together. He also spoke about Nevada's importance in getting him elected. Listen to a portion of the call here.

Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery is known as the "Dean" of the Civil Rights movement. All of us on this call owe a great deal to his life, his work, and his very spirit. Dr. Lowery helped to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the "Bloody Sunday" Selma to Montgomery March. He shook the foundation of Jim Crow in this country until it crumbled. He was one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and its president from 1977 - 1997. And, of critical importance now, he is one of Barack Obama's strongest supporters.

He will be meeting with Nevadans from across Las Vegas to fire up supporters and undecided caucus-goers ahead of the January 19th caucuses. This will be Barack Obama’s 11th visit to Nevada since announcing his plans to run for president.

Community Leaders in Nevada: Maritza Perez

Maritza Perez began volunteering with the campaign in June when an Obama field office opened up in Elko. Six months later she’s playing a huge role in organizing the University of Nevada, Reno for Barack Obama. She wasn’t always a supporter of Sen. Obama. Maritza was an early supporter of Gov. Bill Richardson but once she heard Obama plans to reform government in the U.S. and restore our standing in the world she switched her support. Over her winter break from UNR Maritza is taking time out of her busy schedule to volunteer at the Obama Elko HQ. She is also involved in other student groups at UNR – many that she founded herself.

Maritza founded the ACLU chapter at UNR and is currently the president of the organization. Recently, she helped organize a National Human Rights Day event on campus. “The ACLU is big on civil rights and human rights and I’m very passionate about that,” she says. “When I get older I want to go to law school and get involved with human rights and civil rights like Obama.” Maritza also founded the Latino Research Foundation Student Advisory Board at UNR. She fought hard to start the group and made it one of her top goals when she became a student body student. She wants to enhance the Latino Community on UNR because, as she says, “right now especially with the whole immigration debate, the Latino community is getting a bad rep and I don’t appreciate that and I feel our advisory board can help improve the situation for Latinos.” The Board is working to implement scholarship programs, bring more Latino-based courses to UNR, and get a women’s center on campus.

Maritza hasn't always been a supporter of Barack:

"At first my loyalties were with Bill Richardson but after the Obama office opened in Elko I was interested in learning more about the other candidates so I would go into the office and help out and then I really started seeing what Obama was about and a lot of his stuff falls in line with what I believe. I never felt that way about a politician where his believes are like mine and I’m really excited about that. Obama really represents my optimism for what American can be."

"West Wing" Actress Kathryn Joosten Coming to Nevada

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Barack Obama campaign announced today that “Desperate Housewives” actress Kathryn Joosten will phone bank with local volunteers and supporters tomorrow, Saturday, December 29th in the Southwest Las Vegas office. Joosten, who previously starred as Mrs. Landingham in “The West Wing,” will call Las Vegas residents to encourage them to support Senator Obama and join his growing grassroots movement for change in Nevada and across the country. Later in the day, Joosten will attend one of the Women for Barack Obama house parties being held across the state. Senator Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, will call into the gatherings.

The wall calendar in Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's North Las Vegas field office has a curious word scribbled on Jan. 21, which is two days after the presidential caucus in Nevada.

"Property."

Jason Green, an Obama regional field director, made sure to write this on the calendar to remind himself to complete his Yale Law School property law exam.

For although Green works 14-hour days - first in, last out - as a vital cog in the Obama field machine, he's also a third-year law student at Yale. (Don't tell: Not everyone back in New Haven knows he's here.)

Of the several effects of Nevada's status this year as an early voting state in the presidential race, this is one of the more auspicious: the presence - and not just in the Obama campaign - of the hypersmart, weirdly talented, unhealthily committed workers and volunteers who have flocked here to elect a president.

Nevada Precinct Captains: Dave and Joe in Las Vegas

As a real estate investor, Charisse knows a good deal when she sees one. That's why she chose Barack Obama. Charisse is the precinct captain for 5396 in Clark County. She has been a part of this movement since its earliest days in February and along the way she has been active with African Americans for Obama and Women for Obama. She has hosted a house party, loves visibility events, and has canvassed her precinct numerous times. Most importantly Charisse values Barack's realness - something that's been missing in Washington for a long time.

Actor Kal Penn Canvasses with UNR Students for Barack Obama

Actor Kal Penn just finished up canvassing with members of the University of Nevada, Reno chapter of Students for Barack Obama (SFBO). Kal has starred in several films, including "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" and "The Namesake" and currently stars in the television series House. He talked with local students about Barack Obama's courage to change the system in Washington and his vision to unite the country.

Here's a quick report from Marysa, president of SFBO at UNR (pictured above with Kal):

"Kal Penn came through our campus and surprised students while caucusing for Obama. We collected a large amount of pledge cards and really got the word out more to the campus. Kal spoke with our UNR SFBO chapter before we went canvassing."

Samantha Power Visits Nevada -- Wrap Up

This past weekend, Samantha Power, one of Barack Obama’s top foreign policy advisors, spent the day sharing Barack's vision of the world here in Nevada. Ms. Power is a professor at Harvard and won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for her book entitled "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide. Here’s a brief recap of the weekend’s events:

Ms. Power began the day at a foreign policy forum sponsored by the One Campaign at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. Throughout the discussion she stressed that Barack has long been championing the major foreign policy issues of the twenty-first century. Click here to read Zach’s recap of the forum.

After departing UNLV, Ms. Power stopped by two house parties in Southern Nevada - one in Sun City Las Vegas and another in Henderson. Here’s a video from the Sun City house party:

House Parties with Samantha Power

In addition to speaking at a forum on Darfur and Africa yesterday, Samantha Power (Harvard professor, award-winning author, and foreign policy advisor to Barack Obama) spent quality time with undecided caucus-goers and Obama supporters at two house parties in Nevada.

At each house party Ms. Power gave a short introduction about herself and Barack’s vision for a post-Bush administration world. She then welcomed the audience to ask her whatever was on their minds and promised to relay Nevadans’ concerns to Barack himself. She was asked, “When should we stop negotiating with dictators?” Here’s her answer:

"There’s plenty bad to say about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but to say it from here, from Washington, from America and throw these verbal grenades – the idea that that’s tough but going in the room is somehow weak and naïve? When have we ever achieved anything in the way of diplomacy or peace making by lobbing verbal grenades from far way and not by meeting with theses guys? Nixon went to China and met with Mao. Kennedy talked to Khrushchev. We will not diffuse global tensions unless we’re willing to get in the room and Obama was the first candidate who was prepared to say and do that."

Ms. Power began at a gathering in Sun City Las Vegas.

And finished the day with a house party in Henderson.

Nevada SFBO College Chapters Leading the Pack

Students for Barack Obama at UNR and UNLV have built the largest grassroots organizations of any of the other Democratic presidential candidates at their respective schools. The student-run newspapers for both universities recently highlighted the achievements of each SFBO chapters.

Nevada Sagebrush

Barack Obama’s 200 versus Hillary Clinton’s 26.

... These numbers, representing members of official University of Nevada, Reno student clubs, fall out of line with national polls, where Clinton is ahead of Obama by nearly 20 percent...
... UNR political science professor Eric Herzik said Clinton is a diverse candidate too, but her ties to previous administration dismay students from supporting her.

Students tend to distrust Washington, D.C., and are looking for a completely new face, Herzik said.

"... Obama calls for a steady withdrawal of troops. This attracts students who want a practical solution to end the war, said Marysa Falk, president of Students for Barack Obama."

Rebel Yell

"I've been pleasantly surprised by the student outcome," [Sara Arthrell, junior international business major and campus representative for Barack Obama] said. "As an organization, we’re very excited about it."
The main topic students have asked Arthrell about is Obama's stance on Iraq, which has caused the official Obama headquarters to create a specific pamphlet for students and a pamphlet on Iraq.
"We are offering them a tool," Arthrell said.
Meanwhile, apart from Paul and Obama no other presidential candidate has campus representatives campaigning for them.
For Obama representatives that means the student pool is more open for conversion. They currently have 300 signed supporters. Arthrell said it’s the undecided potential voters that she is trying to reach. Her main goal is to notify students of their power to vote.
"Our main focus is to inform students on Nevada as a caucus state," Arthrell said. "You have just as much an impact as everyone."

The thirty-second spot entitled "Take It Back" highlights Barack Obama's record of reform and his refusal to take contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interests PACs.

In the Senate, Barack Obama challenged both parties to pass tough new ethics rules and rein in the power of lobbyists.

And he’s leading by example, refusing contributions from PACs and Washington lobbyists who have too much power today.

"They think they own this government. But we're here today to take it back."

“A New Today”: Jessica Marciel’s Story

In the Southwest Las Vegas campaign office Jessica Marciel is a usual suspect. Every few days she brings in a new batch of signed pledge cards for her field organizer Julie. “I wear my Obama buttons everywhere,” says Jessica. “I strike up conversations about Barack wherever I go and I have the pledge cards at the ready.” Jessica has noticed that more and more people have heard about Barack. “I get a lot of good response when talking to people whether in-person or on the phone. The caucus is getting closer and people are starting to pay closer attention.”

Fed up with the Bush administrations ever worsening handling of Iraq, Jessica was drawn to Barack’s opposition to the war from the start. “We need to get our troops home and Barack will bring them home.” In 1972, she campaigned for the Democratic Presidential Nominee George McGovern who called for an end to the Vietnam War. “We didn’t win that election but this one’s going to be a lot different.”

During the early 70s Jessica was a member of Hair an anti-Vietnam War musical. Her and the rest of the cast toured the country performing the show in major cities. “The wonderful thing about the show,” reminisces Jessica “was that all of the actors and actresses were against the war as well.”

Jessica reflected on her time in the cast of Hair by writing a chapter in Good Hair Day. In the book, she and other cast members wrote about how Hair changed them and what affect it had on the country. Jessica has seen a steady decline in the youth being active in politics. So when she ventured in the office for the first time she was surprised to see half a dozen high school students making phone calls. “It’s gratifying to see all these young people understanding their potential to change the world and believing in Barack’s vision.” Jessica attributes Barack’s appeal to young people to be because of his honesty.

“I think he’s sincere. I mean look at him – nobody owns him. He doesn’t take money from lobbyists or corporations. He’s a fresh face. He was a constitutional law professor. He’s worked for civil rights. Barack wouldn’t have done those things if he didn’t have a good heart. He could have made more money doing other things.”

I asked Jessica what she thought about the essay that Barack wrote in kindergarten. “That’s silly. I remember when he was saying things like ‘Oh I’m not going to run for President. I’ll just stay here in the Senate.’ And then everybody started screaming for him to run. We were the people that said ‘Please we really need you.” He wasn’t going to run until he saw that the public wanted him to.”

Not only does Jessica talk about Barack Obama wherever she goes she also sings about him! She is currently re-recording a song with Duncan Faure (of the Bay City Rollers) entitled “A New Today”. “Duncan wrote the song almost twenty years ago but the song is very relevant with what’s happening with Obama today." Jessica sang a few lines of the song for me. Here’s the chorus:

Change is on its way.

Obama is on his way.
There’s a new today.
Obama is here to stay.

Ellen and Ruthie Canvass for Change

Over the past weekend, canvassing teams were out in full force here in Nevada. In Reno, students and other volunteers hit the stands at the University of Nevada, Reno's football game on Saturday. (The Wolfpack went on to win the game 49-10!)

In southern Nevada, canvassers gathered up pledge cards from people pledging to caucus for Barack on January 19, 2008. In the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Ellen and Ruthie, who are co-precinct captains, spent three hours canvassing their precinct. Here's some video from their adventure:

Rep. Adam Smith: Barack Candidacy Attracts Young People

Congressman Adam Smith was in Nevada last week and I for his thoughts on the youth vote.

Rep. Smith told me he jumped right into community service and politics early in his life. At twenty-five years old, he was elected as a state senator in his home state of Washington. "I won that election by going door-to-door and talking with people about the issues that they faced on a daily basis." He continues, "This is what Barack is doing all across the country right now. He's listening to people and offering them something more then the status quo." Rep. Smith believes young people will be a huge part of winning here in Nevada. "Young people get fired up when they think about an Obama presidency."

Nevada Volunteer Profile w/ Steve Sampson: Advocate for Disabled Persons

I recently sat down with Steve Sampson, a volunteer with the Barack Obama campaign here in Nevada and an advocate for Disabled Persons. Steve is also known for his acute knowledge of the Las Vegas political scene. I've spoken with Steve numerous times and he exudes a passion for politics that helped him become a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2000 and 2004. At a town hall meeting that was held at Rancho High School in Las Vegas, he was given the chance to ask Barack why a disabled person should support Barack.

General McPeak Stumps in Pahrump

Retired four-star General Merrill "Tony" A. McPeak spoke with voters at a recent town hall meeting in Pahrump, Nevada. General McPeak gave concise and candid answers to questions concerning Barack's vision of a new era of foreign policy. During his 35 years of service in US military, as a combat pilot, he led the Air Force during the first war in Iraq. As a former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, his endorsement of Barack Obama for President speaks volumes about Barack's judgment to lead. "Barack has the ability not only to turn the page in Iraq," Gen. McPeak says, "he will forever transform the way we are viewed by the rest of the world."

Gen. McPeak is one of many foreign policy and national security experts that are supporting Barack. Others include scholars like Pulitzer Prize-winner Samantha Power; former Carter National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski; and former top officials in the Clinton administration like Tony Lake, Susan Rice, and Richard Danzig.

After the UNLV debate on Thursday night, Barack Obama drove from the Cox Pavilion to Paradise Cantina to give a pep talk to 200+ dedicated volunteers. "Let's go change the world" was received with thunderous cheers and applause and Barack flashed his smile and it only grew louder. He then shook hands, hugged supporters, and signed autographs before departing to the Paris Hotel to address the Nevada Clark County Democrats at their annual JJ Dinner.

Barack Rallies Supporters Minutes After the Debate at UNLV

Obama supporters in Nevada were fired up from Barack's performance at the Democratic Presidential Debate in Las Vegas. Minutes after the debate at UNLV, Barack drove over to the Paradise Cantina Restaurant and fired up over 200 supporters. This was a real treat for our volunteers who had given up their day to help hold signs and cheer for Barack.

Many of these supporters had volunteered at the sign war throughout in the day. Holding rally signs in the hot sun and chanting "Fired Up! Ready to Go!" for hours is a true test of endurance. But these Nevadans were up to the challenge!

Nevada Rurals Spotlight: Dona Hall

A few months ago, Dona Hall from Austin, Nevada heard Barack Obama was going to be in Elko. Much like Nyla, Dona has never been involved in a presidential campaign before however she wanted to give Barack Obama a listen. She saw him speak, shook his hand, and the rest is history. “He’s a combination of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King,” she says excitedly. “He’s so honest, so smart, and he’s going to do what must be done.” Dona echoes the sentiment of urgency that voters have expressed about the mounting problems this country is facing. “I’ve never felt an election has been so important as this one. This election is sink or swim.” She senses something different in Barack. “They all have it wrong. Barack has it right. He’s not a politician’s politician.” She finds Barack refusal to accept a dime from lobbyists and PACs refreshing.

Nyla from Fallon, Nevada, has never been involved in politics. Prior to this election, she never took ownership of a campaign before. She was tentatively involved in the 2004 presidential race but she never felt inspired by any of the candidates. “None of them jumped out at me.” Her and her husband watched the speeches at the Democratic National Convention and was blown away by an unknown Illinois politician. “Why isn’t he running?!” Nyla recalled blurting out.

Her dream came true when she heard Barack announce his candidacy for president on February she jumped at the opportunity to help out. She remembers the first contact with the campaign being in early on in 2007. Nyla met with Rachel Sigman, a Regional Field Director for the Nevada Obama campaign, in Fernley, Nevada, at a small organizational meeting. “I’ve been involved since then,” says Nyla.

Nevada Rurals Spotlight: Jack Wood

This is the first post in a series featuring Obama supporters from the Nevada Rurals. Barack is releasing his plan for Rural Nevada today.

When Jack Wood talks politics he exhibits a varying array of emotions. Anger. Excitement. Fear. Distrust. Hopefulness. Jack describes himself as a “populist Democrat;’” a firm believer that change comes from the bottom-up. He puts it simply: “I like grassroots politics.” He has had this belief throughout his life without ever seeing concrete results until a knock on his door changed that.

A few months ago, Adrienne Lever, a field organizer from the Barack Obama campaign, knocked on Jack’s door and offered him and his wife Lillie some campaign literature. Adrienne had just begun to organize Nye County and was in search of precinct captains. Lillie was won over by Adrienne and signed a pledge card and joined up with the campaign right then and there. Jack needed some convincing.

Last weekend I had the privilege of following around Lelar, a precinct captain in Pahrump, and Ephraim, a student at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. Lelar was nervous about canvassing her neighborhood for the first time however Ephraim eased her worries by partnering up with her. For six hours they knocked on doors and spread the word about Barack. Throughout the canvass, Ephraim gave Lelar constant support and encouragement. By the end of the day, Lelar said she was excited for her next canvass.

Ephraim and Lelar embodied a powerful quote that Barack spoke at the 2004 DNC: “It is that fundamental belief - it is that fundamental belief - I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper - that makes this country work.

"Barack-ing in Pahrump"

Pahrump was the place to be this weekend. On Saturday, ten carloads of Obama supporters went out to spread the word about Barack Obama. Here's a bit of a recap of the day's events.

The first pair of canvassers I spent time with were Jack from Pahrump and Mya from Arizona. Jack, a self-described “populist Democrat,” believes canvassing is the premier way of grassroots organizing. Mya added, “there’s power in numbers and canvassing helps us to build the organization necessary to win the Caucus.”

After a lunch break at a supporter’s house, I teamed up with another pair of canvassers: Lelar and Emphraim. Lelar is a precinct captain in Pahrump and was a rookie to the canvassing experience but Ephraim was her guiding light during the day. Ephraim is a student at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona and said he was pumped to spread Barack's message - throughout the day he said we were "Barack-ing in Pahrump". He is heavily active in his college's Students for Barack Obama chapter and spoke at a rally there in early October.

At the end of the day, Lelar said she felt much better about organizing her precinct and that "Ephraim has a room at my house" anytime he wants to come out for another canvass. After Lelar and Ephraim knocked on their last door we headed back for the now infamous Mock Caucus Pot Lockus at a local supporter's house.

To prepare our supporters for the Democratic Caucus on January 19, 2008, the Obama campaign has been holding Mock Caucus Pot Luckus events all around the state. People cook, bake, fry, and sizzle their best meals and house party guests caucus for their favorite dish. As night fell on Pahrump, Nevada, a Mock Caucus took place on the patio of an Obama supporter.

Adrienne Lever, the field organizer for Pahrump, was proud of her volunteers' hard work throughout the whole day. "When everyone returned from the evening canvass, they were ecstatic about the response they had from voters," said Lever. UNR Students for Barack Obama Turn Out to Historic Mockus

Last night, the University of Nevada, Reno, hosted an educational meeting to discuss the upcoming Democratic Caucus, otherwise known as a Mock Caucus. Nevada Democrats have less than ninety days to pick their candidate and turn out to caucus sites on January 19, 2008. The UNR chapter of Students for Barack Obama were present at yesterday's Mock Caucus. Here's a report from SFBO president Marysa Falk.

The University of Nevada, Reno was home to a major event tonight - UNR held it's first Mock Caucus! The "mockus", as it's sometimes referred to, was sponsored by the UNR Young Democrats and local and state Democratic leaders. We set up a table at the event and it attracted a significant amount of people asking questions and joining the campaign. We'll usually have a sign up sheet or two filled with names and email addresses. Tonight we had a few people sign pledge cards. Each one is like gold to the campaign.

The Mockus was designed to get university students prepared for the early Nevada Caucus to be held on January 19, 2008. Several UNR clubs and campaigns participated to spread more knowledge of their cause. Rachel Miller, President of the UNR Young Democrats (voted number one club on campus for 2006-2007), said, "I think it's really great that the candidates who have campaigns in Reno were able to attend. I saw a lot of interaction with students and as always the Obama table seemed to have a lot of interest and people always surrounding their table."

Overall the Mockus added another ten members to the club as well as four pledge cards! "It's a grassroots campaign. We attend as many events as possible, get a small amount of students registered for the SFBO club and get a few people to sign a pledge card and we build this group one member at a time." said Vice-President of the club Maritza Perez.

UNLV Students Organize for Barack on Campus

Chapters of Students for Barack Obama are forming in high schools and colleges all across the country. Students here in Nevada are eager to organize and spread the word about Barack. The University of Nevada, Reno has been featured on the Nevada blog before and has a fantastic grassroots presence on campus. Their bretheren and sisters in the south are organizing the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Secretary Pena Inaugurates Southwest Las Vegas HQ

This past weekend, Federico Peña, the first Hispanic Mayor of Denver (1983-1991) and former Secretary of Energy (1993-1997) and Transportation (1997-1998) under President Bill Clinton, spoke at the inauguration of the Southwest Las Vegas HQ.

After Barack finished up his first leg of his "One Day Two Cities" swing through Nevada, Obama supporters joined in the festivities on the UNLV campus.

It's Homecoming Week at UNLV and students, faculty, and administrators enjoyed some food and music on campus today.

Students for Barack Obama were busy signing up supporters and handing out tickets for the Las Vegas Community Event with Barack Obama tonight. Nathan from Las Vegas (above) manned the Obama table for an hour or two and answer questions about Barack's policies and positions.

Carson City is Ready to Go

This past weekend the Carson City Headquarters for Barack Obama opened its doors to local Obama supporters. Field Organizer Nick Kowalski had this to say about the opening:

"Residents from Carson City and beyond turned out for the opening of what longtime locals say is the first presidential campaign office in the capitol’s history. In a show of the strong grassroots support Barack Obama has built throughout the state of Nevada, especially here in the Carson Valley, local supporters and curious voters flowed through the open house for two-and-a-half hours, enjoying snacks and beverages provided by Obama volunteers.

Interested passers-by walked up, inquiring as to the focus of television cameras and local media congregating within the entryway of the new office.

Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie (Above, in orange) delivered a keynote speech highlighting the importance for volunteers to continue their success throughout the fall and into the winter. Many visitors signed pledge cards, volunteered for future campaign activities and picked up tickets for the Town Hall Meeting in Reno on Thursday, October 18th.

"Since the opening, the door has hardly remained shut, as local voters have stopped by to learn more about the grassroots organizing the Obama campaign continues to build in Nevada."

In the last three months, more than 93,000 new donors contributed to the Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Taking a step back from these historic numbers, you begin to release that this number is not another statistic. This is a statement.

93,000 more people want a responsible end to the war in Iraq.
93,000 more people want health care for all Americans.
93,000 more people want to limit the causes of global warming.
93,000 more people want more than a change of party in Washington – they want a change of politics.

Here’s another impressive factoid about our donations: on an all-staff conference call today Barack announced that “our campaign has more donations of 200 dollars or less than all of the donations of the other Democratic presidential candidates put together.” This is due in big part to the massive amounts of 5, 10, and 20 dollar donations that flooded into the Obama campaign during the final week of the September.

It Couldn't Have Happened Anywhere But in Little Old New York

Last night Barack Obama fired up a crowd of nearly 25,000 people in New York City. The huge rally was held at Washington Square Park. When Barack took the stage the park was packed with people straining their necks to get a glimpse of him. Check out some video from the event in NYC.

Here in Nevada, the Obama staff watched the event on our computer screens. One member of the team watched the event intently. Beatina, an alumna of New York University, scanned the crowd on her computer monitor searching for faces of her friends still in the Big Apple. She is a new member of Team Nevada. I chatted with her as she watched the NYC event.

Beatina was a field organizer in East Harlem for the Obama campaign. She recently came out to Nevada to organize Obama supporters for our Caucus on January 19, 2008. As she watched Barack talk to the crowd of almost 25,000, I asked her to describe the most memorable experience she had while working for the campaign in New York City. Beatina looked at me and laughed.

She mused about the first time she met Barack while she was working at an event where Barack was going to be speaking. She was disappointed because she wouldn't be able to see him speak due to the fact that she was taking tickets for the event at the door. Beatina knew she would probably have more opportunities to meet Barack, but it still would have “made her day!” Fortunately for Beatina, Barack and his entourage decided to enter the event using the front door. Beatina told me that, "Barack walked through the door and approached me and the other people who were with me. My friend saw Barack and looked at his clipboard and said, 'Are you on the list?' ... It was cute."

First Nevada SFBO Chapter Ready to Go

The first University chapter of Students for Barack Obama has been founded in Nevada. Our newest addition is an SFBO group at the University of Nevada, Reno.

I spoke with Marysa, the Chapter President, about her goals for the group. A sophomore studying political science and public relations, Marysa says she'll focus on getting as many students to sign pledge cards and then turn them out to the Nevada Caucus on January 19, 2008.

Following in Barack's footsteps, Marysa also wants to run a voter registration drive at the university. (Barack was not much older then Marysa when he led a voter registration drive during his time as a community organizerin Chicago.)

Marysa was able to meet Barack when he stopped into Elko on August 06, 2007. She had the priviledge of introducing him and then speaking with him backstage. Marysa is second from left in the photo below. All four of the students in the photo were interns at the Elko campaign office last the summer. Obama Nevada Field Director Michael Moffo said they played a pivotal role in "driving the Elko Train" towards victory on Caucus Day.

Here's what Marysa had to say about the picture she emailed me: "(From L to R) Boris, me, Barack, Maritza, Jed. Boris and Jed were very active volunteers and Boris spoke before I gave the more formal introduction to Barack in Elko. Also, Maritza and Jed spoke a few minutes before Boris and I about pledge cards." Maritza is the Get-Out-The-Vote Coordinator for the campus.

Barack wants people to have ownership of the campaign and is putting his trust and faith into our supporters who are organizing their friends, families, and communities. Out of Many, One

Thanks to all the Obama supporters from Orange County, California, and Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma County, Arizona, for giving up their weekend and volunteering here in Las Vegas. Border State volunteers helped out our Las Vegas supporters by collecting pledge cards, registering new voters, and phone banking. Thanks for the good times this weekend!

Last week we had a group of volunteers drive in from Los Angeles to lend us an extra 120 hands and feet. Will, an intern in the Las Vegas office, spent some quality time with last weekend's Border State crew and wrote the following blog entry:

Last weekend in Las Vegas, we were privileged to have over 60 volunteers come all the way from Los Angeles. The volunteers helped out the campaign with their tremendous effort, and we couldn’t have achieved as much as we did this weekend without them.
One great volunteer that came in last weekend was named Bryce, a 17-year-old high school student. Bryce came to help Barack Obama in Las Vegas because he believes Barack cares about young people and the issues that they care about. “Obama is inspiring, a real leader,” said Bryce. “He’s not the normal politician. I want to see him as commander-in-chief.” The Iraq War and Social Security are two issues that Bryce sees as affecting his life.
Steven, another volunteer this weekend, has the simplest, and probably the most important reason to support Barack: his two children. After seeing Barack on his book tour for The Audacity of Hope, Steven immediately knew Barack was the best person to create a safe and prosperous future for his children.
The 60 volunteers that traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas are testament to the powerful reach that Barack has when bringing people together.
During my conversations with Bryce, Steven, and the other Los Angeles volunteers, I couldn’t help remember the first time I knew Barack Obama was the candidate I wanted to work for.
My hope for the future really started with just a few words spoken by Barack at the Democratic National Convention.
“It is that fundamental belief: I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper that makes this country work. It’s what allows us to pursue our individual dreams and yet still come together as one American family. E pluribus Unum: ‘Out of many, one.’”
Those words meant more to me than just a good campaign slogan in a stump speech. Those words were a call-to-action, and for the first time, I felt like there was a chance that America would not always be split along red states and blue states, Democrats and Republicans, young and old, the haves and have-nots. I saw a chance to build a stronger American community. One based not on fear and distrust, but of hope and a common purpose.
I dropped out of my last semester of college, delaying my graduation, to come to Nevada to intern for the Obama campaign. I have never made a better decision.

Barack Obama Tackling Foreclosure Crisis

At the Doolittle town hall meeting in Las Vegas, an audience member asked Barack Obama, “What are you going to do when you are elected president to end these deceptive practices [subprime loans and predatory lending]?”

Right now, Nevada has the highest foreclosure rate in the country and there are thousands of Las Vegas residents who have lost their homes because of deceptive lending practices. Two recent articles (“Coping with a Real-Estate Bust” and “U.S. Home Foreclosures Soar in August”) detail the toll that foreclosures are having on Americans.

In the video below Barack Obama talks about the Stop Fraud Act that he introduced in the Senate in February 2006. Barack wants to protect homeowners from unfair mortgage practices while not giving handouts to home speculators looking "to make a quick buck."

Another Successful Organizational Meeting

Last night, Obama supporters in northwest Las Vegas gathered for an organization meeting at Parson Elementary School to learn more about the campaign and each other. Nevada Field Director, Michael Moffo, shared with supporters the importance of organizing for the Nevada caucus. Michael also spoke about the "amazing progress" that the campaign has made here in the Silver State. People came for the light refreshments but stayed for the informative presentation.

Burning the Midnight Oil

We are burning the midnight oil on Friday night here at the Las Vegas office. We are heading into a busy weekend and so we'll be up late preparing for two big events. First, a new team of Border State volunteers drove in from Los Angeles to help out for the weekend and field organizers are finishing up some activities that will keep our border state volunteers active all weekend. Secondly, we are also holding an organization meeting for the Southwest region of Las Vegas. This meeting will empower hundreds of volunteers with tools to help them organize for Barack in their neighborhoods.

Camel Races - Live from Virginia City, NV

Here in Nevada, Obama for America has an amazing group of field organizers. We will be featuring stories from all of our field organizers in the coming weeks and months ahead. In this inaugural post from Field Organizer John La Rue (covering all of Storey County, some of Washoe, and Fernley) is straight out of an Indiana Jones movie. John, take it from here...

Franny (a fellow Reno field organizer) and I went to Virginia City on Saturday 9/8 for their annual camel races. I'm still not exactly sure why Virginia City races camels, but they do, and crowds turn out to see the sight. To get to the city, you have to drive up a winding state road that clings to the side of the mountains. The occasional crazy bicyclist squeezed in on the tiny shoulder where cars flash past on one side and a tiny guardrail looks over a steep drop.
Virginia City itself is built on a hill, so D Street is about 20 feet lower than C Street, where the camels paraded. We parked in front of the oldest Catholic Church in NV, and walked up to C Street for the parade. C Street is lined with boardwalks and various boutiques, restaurants, and old-style saloons and casinos. Virginia City might be best known as "the city" from the popular TV show Bonanza, but it's also the place where Samuel Clemens first published as Mark Twain. Franny and I stopped by the Virginia City Democrats' annual rummage sale, and then lined up with the rest of the crowd for the parade at high noon. Sure enough-the camels were for real. Franny and I worked the crowd with literature and stickers.

Reactions ranged from "Barack who?" to "Oh! Can I have another sticker for my friend?"

One older man told me I was "In the wrong part of the country," but a woman nearby swiftly jumped in to take a sticker-"Don't listen to him honey, I'm a Democrat and so are my neighbors." Even the people who laughed and refused a sticker were courteous as they explained "Heck no--I'm a republican."

Unfortunately, we couldn't stick around for the actual races, so I still don't know which camel won...

Drive for Change

Over 40 people will be coming to the Las Vegas office to volunteer for Barack this weekend. Why the announcement? Why the hype? Simple: these 40 some people are driving all the way from Los Angeles, California! The Obama campaign in Nevada has hosted border state 6 trips from Obama supporters in California, Arizona, Idaho, and Utah, just to name a few. If you are interested in learning more about upcoming trips please email Krish, our Border State Coordinator, and he will bring you up to speed. Let’s rewind here and give a quick look back to last weekend’s border state trip.

Last weekend a fantastic bunch of volunteers from San Diego, California, came to Las Vegas to give their time and energy to help Barack win Nevada. The San Diego team helped to identify supporters through phone banking and had supporters sign pledge cards which can be used to track how many caucus goers we will have turning out for Barack.

Before they returned home, I captured the excitement of one of our superstar Border State volunteers: Erika from San Diego. Krish told me that Erika was “one of the sweetest people” he’s ever met. “She was willing to jump in do anything and everything for the campaign,” Krish said. Erika is involved with the San Diego for Obama group back home and she is excited to come back to Las Vegas as soon as she can.

Barack Reaffirms Support of Culinary Union

Barack Obama made the following statement Wednesady on the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 Strike Authorization Vote.

“Today, the Culinary Union took a necessary step towards achieving fair contracts for their workers. With close to 10,000 employees still without the security of a fair contract and a living wage, the Culinary Union voted to authorize their negotiators to call for a strike. No party involved wants to strike, so I remain hopeful that the remaining properties will come to the table and join with their workers in negotiating fair contracts that provide their employees a chance to fulfill the Las Vegas dream.
The Culinary Union Local 226 has set the standard in Nevada and across the country by negotiating contracts for their workers that provide careers, living wages and solid benefits. In Las Vegas and across Nevada, hotels and casinos have joined with their workers in a way that has benefitted everyone – the workers, the companies and the customers they serve.
These workers have helped make Las Vegas the city it is today, and I join with the Culinary Union in declaring that we will fight until every last worker has a fair contract. I have been on the picket line for years with workers in Illinois and if workers in Nevada are forced to strike I will be standing by their side as well.

Barack Obama on Today Show and All Things Considered

Barack Obama is dominating the news today! Barack was on the Today Show this morning and will be on NPR's All Things Considered at 3:00pm PST.

David Gregory interviewed Barack about his upcoming Iraq policy speech on the Today Show this morning. Watch the video:

Everyday Should be Grandparents Day

This past weekend, I went to the Winchester Cultural Center to celebrate National Grandparents Day. The event was coordinated by three fantastic organizers from the Las Vegas HQ: Senior Outreach Director Michael Boehm, Regional Field Director Oliva Lopez, and Field Organizer Cheryl Taruc. The event was a celebratory affair featuring a wonderful spaghetti lunch and an enormous chocolate cake for dessert. Needless to say, nobody left with an empty stomach. For all those who enjoyed the gathering, it would not have taken place if it were not for the hard work of Letha from Las Vegas. Letha’s passion for her work began in Arkansas where she raised seven of her thirteen grandchildren! She also has five great-grand children!

Barack's Commitment to Education Inspires Organizer

Kate Nowak has been on the ground here in Nevada since July 1st helping to organize Southwest Las Vegas. She attended Camp Obama last June and has used her organizing skills to empower her volunteers and improve the overall quality of work at the Obama headquarters.

Before Kate came to Nevada, she was an educator of children with special needs in Queens, New York. Her passion for education is evident everyday at the Las Vegas HQ.

In the video below, Kate talks about her admiration of Barack's commitment to education.

Having worked closely with Kate over the past three months, I've been witness to her never-ending ability to push those around her to do their best. She is an inspiration to the young and old alike. We are proud here at the Nevada HQ to have Kate Nowak working on our team.
