Obama Yay all the live-long day!

We are the ones we've been waiting for. It's not just a line. Many of us have sat idly on the sidelines, cynical, weary, uninspired. We are the 'closet Democrats'. Ashamed of our party, our candidates, and probably more often than not, feeling helpless to combat the yelling, screaming arguers of what seems like endless nonsense from the 'talking heads' on the Right.

It has been all too much for far too long. Now we are awakened and owing our own power and our voices again. Not all of us started supporting Barack Obama, but none of us are waiating for Barack Obama to tell us what to say. We are saying what we believe and not always agreeing, but we are engaged again, or for many of us for the first time in our adult lives.

We don't mindlessly follow. If we did, we would have been Republicans, following George W. Bush over a cliff. We waited and we found what we were waiting for. I'm not even saying that Barack Obama won't let us down. I suspect he will because he is human. But I believe he is a good man and that he can take this great nation in the direction it needs to go so that we are strong and prosperous once again, and respected as a leader in the world.

I'm so looking forward to it.

Valparaiso, Indiana Grassroots Report

The grassroots are sprouting in Valparaiso --little by little. We are going to be going strong in September. We finally have our office, which was curtailed a bit last week by lack of telephone service installation due to violent storms rolling in at the beginning of last week. This information comes from our very own Rebecca Tomerlin who met me for breakfast on Saturday morning 08/09 at the Viking Chili Bowl for my event "Breakfast for Obama" which is a casual breakfast meet-up for supporters and others that I have committed to hosting each week until the election. Ed Dixon also met with me at the breakfast meeting for two consequetive Saturdays.

We have a new team leader from the Obama Campaign whose name is Mike. Rebeeca said that Mike has committed to being at the Obama office from 9 AM to 9 PM everyday, except when scheduling of other grassroots supporters can fill in at the office so that it can remain open for the public and/or the curious.

Next Saturday, 08/16, there will NOT be a 'Breakfast for Obama' meeting. We are meeting on Thursday, 08/14 at Barnes and Nobles instead for a supporter get together. Mike called me this morning to say that he was checking for events in Valparaiso because he wanted to have an organizing meeting on Thursday, so we are turning my event into an organizing meeting at Barnes and Nobles. We will have our meeting and be visible to the public at the same time.

Rebecca also mentioned that Lily Schaeffer had been canvassing recently and encountered many positive comments regarding Barack Obama. Also, Rebecca spoke with Senator Obama at Schoops when he stopped by for a burger last week with Senator Bayh after the townhall meeting in Elkhart. She got his autograph. I'm not big on hero worshipping, but I have to admit I was a bit jealous.

We are plugging along here. The 'big push' is coming and we are going to be ready for it. I've been blogging and listening to all the negatives coming from the McCain campaign, the lies about taxes over and over and over again. If we are going to take Center Township and Porter County, we are going to have to calmly and rationaly tell people that these are lies. We can show people the facts. We can show them the non-partisan evaluations Factcheck.org - The Annenburgh Group that show the McCain ads and surrogates lies for what they are... lies.

It is person-to-person, neighbor-to-neighbor that is going to win this thing. The seeds of doubt will be sewn on the television screens across America, but we are the trustworthy ones, the honest ones, the ones who are engaged with the campaign, we are the ones who KNOW!

Stay positive, stay engaged, keep in touch and don't give up. You remember how it goes. We are the ones we've been waiting for. This is OUR time. Yes we can.

Peon Wakup Call: Hello? America? On energy, we better do it FIRST before we get left behind in the global marketplace. 'Peon' Commentary included.

OK, here's how I see it. We will have to get a 'lil bit' uncomfortable to get where we need to go. The future of good-paying jobs for Americans is in energy. We need to get off the stick and support it, demand it, require it. If we don't, another country is going to do it first. This is our future, and I am only speaking to the issue of jobs for Americans.

Here's another reason to elect a President who will partner with business and actually lead us in a new direction with respect to these goals. We need to get off our dependence on oil in the middle East, and from foreign leaders like Venezuela's Extremist President, Hugo Rafael Chávez. We need to get off the stick and elect a President who will facilitate these changes without putting 'politics' into every single solitary issue of great importance in our country and our world.

I know the amazing things that have occurred in this country and not through reading any books. My parents were born and lived through 'The Depression', World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and came into the middle-class through the years of a thriving steel industry. If that generation could do what they did, we can do this.

When Barack Obama says 'We are the ones we've been waiting for.", I believe he is saying that we have the power to make change. We have the power to think through these issues and make informed decisions. We have the power to say 'Hey this ain't workin', let's do something else." Our power is in our vote. Our power is in our voices, and strongest when our voices unite.

When Barack Obama says "Yes we can.", I believe that he is trying to bring our minds into the light of possibility. For many of us the possibility of the American dream has been overshadowed by loss, tragedy, endless struggle, and roadblocks, while at the same time, we turn on our televisions to see the affluence and prosperity that everyone else on earth seems to be enjoying. It's not true of course that everyone is affluent, but it is another unintentional, yet insidious way of lowering one's self worth and esteem. It has not been true that in America, anyone can succeed if they work hard and try. Many can and have. Many work very hard each and everyday and see little from their toil. Often the messages are "You are not trying hard enough!"

Even still, we are so fortunate. Even still, we are grateful for our our country, and are well aware of the advantages we have in this great nation. We just want to do better, and to have more opportunities. I believe that those opportunities will be in changing the way we think first of all, and changing what we want. Capitalism is not bad in and of itself, but when coupled with extreme greed, and no checks and balances, no partnering with the American people, if Capitalism were naked, it would be a 'Girl's Gone Wild' Video.

We can take it back. We have this opportunity to take back our country. I believe that Barack Obama is the person who can lead us in a new and better direction. I hope that you will join us, if you have not already done so. He is not 'The One', nor is he 'The Messiah', or any of the things that the other side may say. There is no 'koolaid' drinking in the campaign. If you really know Democrats, then you must know that we rarely agree on everything, we cannot keep our big mouths shut about it, and that our disagreements in the past have often been part of the reason we have not been able to win elections, so the 'koolaid' drinking thing has got no legs at all.

My New Blog Site: Political Peon

Howdy folks,

I have entered the blogosphere by starting my own blog site called Political Peon at the following link:

My reason for doing this is because of my intense desire to see the way we communicate politically changed. On a more personal and perhaps selfish note, it is to get some of these thoughts out of my head so that the cobwebs in my brain can be cleared out.

I have always enjoyed writing but been too chicken most of my life to put myself out there. I know I am not the most brilliant mind there ever was, but with all this freedom we have and that we constantly talk about and tout, I thought I'd better use some of it up before it's all gone.

The other reason for my blog is to express my views on "Our" candidate, Barack Obama. Barack has helped me to believe that we can change our political discourse, we can listen to each other without bouncing from outrage to outrage, reaction to reaction, but to begin the process of engaging in reasoned and thoughtful discourse without all the party bashing, label trashing garbage that we have seen for so long.

It's up to us to change the dialogue (bottom's up) and not the responsibility or duty of the digital images that seek to make everything in politics a competitive sport. Our politics are supposed to make us better as human beings and citizens; not to have us at each other's throats. I think this is what Jon Stewart was trying to say up until the point when he called Tucker Carlson a bad slang name for the male appendage on CNN's crossfire, which subsequently and ironically is no longer on the air.

Where is Mark Twain when you need him? Let's keep talking and let's keep Baracking.

Unite for Change - Fired Up and Ready to Grill Report

It was so cool to be with other Democrats at our Unite for Change Fired Up and Ready to Grill party. We ate some good eats and talked some good talk, shared some good stories from the primaries, and got fired up.

We have a planning meeting on July 9 at our local library to get things rolling and plan future events. We had our county staffer present along with a neighboring county. Indiana CAN turn blue folks! Believe it!

It was a scary endeavor to put ourselves out there in our community, not knowing who would show up, but Julie and I met some great people and the hard work was well worth it.

There will be an office opening in Porter County. If you know anybody who has space that they can let out for the Obama office in Porter County , please contact HQ, or e-mail me through the website or at rue.megan@gmail.com.

Stay connected to the website. There will be more events coming. Find a way to contribute to the campaign when and where you can. We can do this folks. YES WE CAN!

Hi Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Americans!

My previous blog post was a plea for someone to host a party in my community for "Unite for Change" day. I am one lucky girl because I have made a new friend and we have a party scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2008 from 5 to 7 PM at 606 Monroe Street, Valparaiso, Indiana. My new friend Julie has offered to be the hostess for this event and we are truely FIRED UP!

I have been waiting for a foreign policy that makes a lick of sense. It is coming fast and strong. I am hopeful and grateful for a candidate who understands that playing politics with the American people does not strengthen our Republic, but weakens and divides.

Many of our friends and neighbors are not 'political junkies' as many of us. They are not seeking out answers on the Internet, but relying on mainstream media. It is up to us to point them in a different direction. We need more than sound bites to address some of these complex issues. I think that this campaign is as much about educating the electorate, as it is about winning an election.

When we communicate with others, let us think of good teachers we have known in our lives and moments when perhaps what we needed to learn did not come easy or quickly. How did that special teacher get through all the gray matter to help us to understand a concept. For me the best teachers that helped me have been accepting and non-judgmental, respecting me, and believing that I was capable of understanding.

Each of us is unique and different. Become the kind of teacher that you respected, and then begin to teach others how to access the information they need to find the truth about our candidate and our party. We can do this without being disrespectful and condescending. I know we can.

Changing the tone and approach of our politics is a challenge. I believe we can meet this goal of changing our political discourse, by finding the good teacher in each of us, and also by the example that Barack Obama is setting for us each and every day. It is not weak to be smart. It is not weak to be wise. It is not weak to be diplomatic. It is not weak to closely examine the other side of the argument.

I am also mindful of the definition of insanity:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Albert Einstein.

It is time for a change. It is time for sanity.

Hi Northwest Indiana people and others,

I need some help here. Can you help me? I am funny, bright, a little scatter-brained and often endearing. I drive a school bus so I can't be all bad. I want Barack Obama to be President of the United States so I am on the right team. I need a hand here.

I am looking for a "Unite for Change" party on June 28, 2008 in or around my community which is Valparaiso, Indiana. I am not a hostess. Hostessing is not my thing. I need somebody in or around Valparaiso, Indiana to host a "Unite for Change" party and I will do everything in my power to get existing supporters and people on the fence to come to your party. That is my commitment. I would even bring my famous chilli dip and the chips too. I would even brainstorm with you a theme if you want.

I know there are some of you out there. Wake up! The primary is over! We won and the real work is now ongoing and more important than ever. I need a host or hostess and you are guaranteed at least one guest at your "Unite for Change" party! Me!

Help me! I need a party! I want a party and more than that, I want Indiana to go RED, RED, RED for Obama in 2008! YES WE DID (Primary)! YES WE CAN (We are doing it)! YES WE WILL (but it is not a slam dunk without hard, but very fun work)!

One of my stories: The Fierce Urgency of Now!

I posted this one to roper's blog. He was looking for personal stories. This is one of my many stories:

I am a late bloomer in nearly everything in my adult life. I have made lots of mistakes. One of the biggest mistakes I made, which may also be a blessing in disguise, was leaving a company I worked for for twenty years a few years after it went to being traded on the stock market. After it went to being traded, everything changed rapidly and more demands were being made that I was in no position to accomodate so I had to leave it. I started going to college while working part time jobs.

My Mom had been diagnosed with Alzhiemer's Disease which was a consideration when I left my job. I wanted to be close and close to my young daughter and the company was adding more and more hours to my already exhausting workday.

I did a stop-out of school for two years when things were accelerating with both of my parents' health. My Mom went into hospital in Jan 2006 and passed Feb 2006. My Dad lost what marbles he had left after that. Couldn't remember that my Mom had died. Couldn't remember who my daughter was who he had loved so dearly. I stayed with my Dad for 9 months until he went into nursing facility and passed away less than six months later.

Scrambled for a job... nothing much in my field which was business law... also emotionally spent and weary from experience with my parents and lack of confidence problems. Worked at a grocery store for 6 months then became a school bus driver which I love (but sadly doesn't pay enough).

All the way cycling through depression. The message of HOPE is what I have been trying to give myself in my personal life. Reclaiming a hopeful attitude. To have this HOPE in our national political dialogue and to actually have faith that things can change for the better, is just what this tired old gal has needed for some time. Yay!

I am remembering what Presidential campigns are like

During the last Presidential election cycle, I found out what it is really like. It is an ugly business. With all of Barack's words, I had hoped it would get better, but I am finding out that it has not. I am not going to let it get me down though. I am just going to be the best me I can be and not become the type of person that I despise. I am going to stand up when and where I am able, keep my cool and be the kind of person I can respect at the end of each and every day. I am going to stay engaged and do what I can do. I am going to bring more people into the process. I care about this country. I love this country and I will love my friends and neighbors who disagree with me when this is over. I will try to educate people and stay away from 'propoganda' on all sides and seek out truth always. I am HOPEFUL that this country can CHANGE, but I am also wise enough to understand that CHANGE occurs over time.

I begin with President Kennedy

I was five-years-old when President Kennedy was assassinated. I had just finished kindergarten and was watching Bozo Circus when the news interrupted the programming. I ran to the kitchen to tell my Mom. I remember my Mom's tears. I remember my tears followed even though I did not understand what was happening. I wasn't thinking about Bozo or the Grand Prize Game I was missing. Something had happened and it was important and my Mom was crying.

My parents were staunch Democrats. My father was a union steel worker and a Navy Veteran of World War II. My mother worked in and outside of the home during her life. My Mom died on February 13, 2006 and my Dad on June 01, 2007. They would both be proud of my participation in the party. Soon to be 50, I am finally established as a Democrat, in large part thanks to George W. Bush.

Barack Obama has inspired me, but Hillary Clinton has as well. I am well aware that all of us are imperfect human beings, but now is the time to make our party "our party". If the Democratic Party has not be strong and united, it may very well be because of our own apathy. That was then and this is now.

We have wonderful young people willing to take a stand. We also have oldsters like me who still feel pretty young, connected through Rock N' Roll music and and an idealism that has been rekindled. If I could do anything this summer, besides trying to keep my financial boat afloat by washing school buses, I would travel across this country campaigning, but for now I leave it to the younger and more affluent ones. But I have fingers and I have a computer and I have a voice and a telephone too and a bit of wisdom and a sense of humor that I can use.

I look forward to participating in the process and for getting to know many of you through our on line political discourse.
