Dear Friend,

We know about the Bush administration turning a blind eye and refusing to regulate bad behavior. We know about the banks that played fast and loose with our retirements, and then, when it all blew up, they took golden parachutes lined with our tax dollars.

On March 12, Jon Stewart of The Daily Show discussed another serious problem: financial news networks like CNBC that promoted Wall Street propaganda and then blamed the financial crisis on "losers" who couldn't make their mortgage payments.

Stewart took on Jim Cramer of CNBC; the interview was moving, appalling, and a searing indictment that really hit home.

I just watched the interview and signed a petition to tell CNBC that they should be ashamed of their behavior. A financial news channel should investigate and report the truth, not merely air infomercials for Wall Street.

Executive assassination ring reported directly to Cheney

Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh dropped a bombshell on Tuesday when he told an audience at the University of Minnesota that the military was running an "executive assassination ring" throughout the Bush years which reported directly to former Vice President Dick Cheney.

The remark came out seemingly inadvertently when Hersh was asked by the moderator of a public discussion of "America's Constitutional Crisis" whether abuses of executive power, like those which occurred under Richard Nixon, continue to this day.

Hersh replied, "After 9/11, I haven’t written about this yet, but the Central Intelligence Agency was very deeply involved in domestic activities against people they thought to be enemies of the state. Without any legal authority for it. They haven’t been called on it yet."

Hersh then went on to describe a second area of extra-legal operations: the Joint Special Operations Command. "It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently," he explained. "They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. ... Congress has no oversight of it."

"It’s an executive assassination ring essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on," Hersh stated. "Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. That’s been going on, in the name of all of us."

Hersh told MinnPost.com blogger Eric Black in an email exchange after the event that the subject was "not something I wanted to dwell about in public." He is looking into it for a book, but he believes it may be a year or two before he has enough evidence "for even the most skeptical."

Stories have been coming out about covert Pentagon assassination squads for the last several years. In 2003, Hersh himself reported on Task Force 121, which operated chiefly out of the Joint Special Operations Command. Others stories spoke of a proposed Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group.

As Hersh noted in Minnesota, the New York Times on Monday described the Joint Special Operations Command as overseeing the secret commando units in Afghanistan whose missions were temporarily ordered halted last month because of growing concerns over excessive civilian deaths.

However, it appears that Hersh is now on the trail of some fresh revelation about these squads and their connection to Vice-President Cheney that goes well beyond anything that has previously been reported.

Holder to stop raids on medical marijuana clubs!

Advocates of legalizing marijuana are having a great week in California.

First, San Francisco's Tom Ammiano initiated a bill to legalize pot use in the state, and tax it at about “a buck a joint,” one report claimed.

Today came word that newly installed U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder would stop the practice established by the Bush administration of raiding legally licensed medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Drug Enforcement Agency will now cease the raids that have continued, according to reports, even after Bush left office. Holder said Obama’s campaign promise to stop the raids is “now American policy.”

San Francisco has about two dozen such clubs, and has often been targeted by the feds. The city recently passed legislation to regulate the businesses more effectively.

“Holder's declaration is a high point for the movement to legalize medical marijuana, which has been growing for decades despite federal hostility,” a report in the Huffington Post stated.

And this line from their story is just to good to pass up: “Patriotic potheads love to point out that cannabis was grown at Jamestown, that George Washington might have used hashish, and that Thomas Jefferson wrote a draft of the Declaration of Independence on hemp-fiber paper,”

After generations of defending capital punishment and marijuana possession laws on moral, ethical and religious grounds, after years of declaring that the death penalty acted as a deterrent against violent crime and that pot smokers were more dangerous to society than, say, alcohol consumers, all of a sudden thanks to our economic crisis more and more mainstream powerbrokers are considering dramatic changes to our criminal justice system.

The New York Times today has a late-arriving piece by Ian Urbina which posits that lawmakers in several states are considering abandoning the death penalty because it’s just too expensive and cuts into other law enforcement priorities. State officials are beginning to acknowledge that they can more productively spend their budget funds on cracking unsolved cases or ensuring better police protection than on keeping pot smokers in prison or fighting for decades with capital defendants. This, Urbina writes, is forcing a sea-change around the nation:

“Last year, in an effort to cut costs, probation and parole agencies in Arizona, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey and Vermont reduced or dropped prison time for thousands of offenders who violated conditions of their release. In some states, probation and parole violators account for up to two-thirds of prison admissions each year; typical violations are failing drug tests or missing meetings with parole officers.

As prison crowding has become acute, lawsuits have followed in states like California, and politicians find themselves having to choose among politically unattractive options: spend scarce tax dollars on expanding prisons, loosen laws to stem the flow of incarcerations, or release some nonviolent offenders.”

This trend toward releasing non-violent offenders naturally begs the question: what about legalizing marijuana possession and lowering the drinking age? A California lawmaker Monday introduced legislation that would legalize (and tax) pot there. In Colorado, as seen this past Sunday on 60 Minutes, the police chief in Boulder (which houses a raucous University of Colorado) made a compelling case for saving money by reducing the drinking age from 21. Better to have police officers tracking violent crime, the argument goes, than writing tickets for college kids who are going to drink no matter what.

These declarations, from the political and legal arena, are not just isolated voices shouting into the wilderness. Consider the late, great Milton Friedman, the Nobel Laureate, former Reagan advisor, and esteemed scholar associated with the very conservative Hoover Institution. He was among hundreds of important economists who argue that pot should be legalized and taxed - and that the income from such taxation could generate billions in new revenues and billions more in enforcement savings. If you live in California, what would you rather have? Pot smokers whose cases are tying up the legal system? Or better health care and roads thanks to a marijuana tax. I’m just asking the question-and others are too.

Friedman and his colleagues first made these arguments years ago - before the economy tanked. Is it time to take his view more seriously with states facing huge budget shortfalls that threaten to curtail vital projects and policies? It is such a great leap from releasing prisoners from prison early to save money and not sending them there at all to save more? I would suspect a survey of police officials and prosecutors, and a survey of state budget officials, would indicate that the matter is being taken more seriously today than it ever has been.

It’s not my place to advocate anything - so please don’t write and accuse me of being Cheech or Chong. All I am saying is that the economic case for legalizing marijuana, and for lower the drinking rate, is as compelling as it has ever been and that, in a time of great changes in the interaction between government and the governed, it would not be the worst thing in the world to have a serious national debate on the topic. If we are going to lower state and federal budgets for criminal justice, if we are going to be emptying our prisons anyway to save costs, let’s make sure we do it in a way that maximizes the opportunities available to us.

That great economic historian, Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, took to the floor of the Senate last week to excoriate the memory of FDR and claim the New Deal didn’t end the Great Depression. In fact, Roosevelt’s New Deal programs put millions of average Americans to work and reduced unemployment from a high of over 35 percent to 14 percent. Aside from that, if FDR was such a failure, why did he win by 62.6 percent of the popular vote, and 98.5 percent of the electoral vote, in 1936, and 55 percent in 1940, with 84.6 of the EV? Why was he retained in office for 12 years, from 1932 until his death in 1945, the longest-serving president in our history, if he accomplished nothing toward solving the primary issue of that time – the economic crisis? Some smart reporter should ask McConnell those questions.

In his first press conference on February 9, Obama put the screws to the GOP, albeit wrapped in enough padding that no blood was drawn but, to mix metaphors, this is Obama’s style – wear them down with civility while you score with shots to the gut and dance away. Our ‘Gentleman Jim’ President nimbly peppered the punch-drunk Republicans just as ably as the original did in 1892 to win the heavyweight crown from the blundering beast that was John L. Sullivan who had only his ’strong right arm’ as a weapon.

Pushed by such withered toads as McConnell, blatant numbskulls like Mike Pence of Baghdad street bazaars are ‘just like any open-air market in Indiana in the summertime’ fame, and the inchoate babblings of the evidently very corrupt new RNC chair Michael Steele, the GOP is collectively lurching toward irretrievable disaster, one every bit as bad as anything the Dimbulb Son who just left the White House wrought — you know, the one whose name must never be mentioned in public by any Republican ever again. They seem determined to take the mean-spirited, unpopular opinion on nearly every issue, just to gratify a shaky base of fringe nutcases, religious retrogrades, Fox News employees, Wall Street Journal editorial board members, Coulter cultists, racist rednecks, professional malcontents, crumb-bum lobbyists, and off-shored-assets tycoons channeling Leona Helmsley.

But the final stake in the heart of the party of Nixon won’t come from the current brouhaha over economic stimulus – the near future holds the prospect of national health care reform, and it’s a fight they can’t win. Almost every average American, or someone close to them, has or had a health problem that was either insufficiently covered by their health insurance, not covered at all, or their policy was canceled due to long-term illness. Add in the millions who have no insurance whatsoever, and you have set up a situation wherein if the Republicans cooperate with Obama they lose the Limbaugh Loonies, and if they oppose the President, chance the GOP dwindling to a little rural party, incapable of electing much more than some red-dirt congressional candidates as they narrow their appeal to scary Jim Bob snake handlers invoking dire imprecations on the heads of Muslims, liberals, agnostics and Unitarians; cardboard-sword Risk board imperialists; permanently-outraged Freeper peepers, and a few scatterbrained latter-day Friedman groupies on the payroll at one of those fog-bound think tanks with a life-size framed portrait of St. Ronnie in the lobby wearing a white cowboy hat to hide the halo. Meanwhile, the rest of the country is moving on into the twenty-first century.

The Bush/Rove Republicans are now barking like a crazed dog trapped in a vet’s office corner — they are lashing out, barely making sense anymore. A friend who once worked for a psychiatric hospital said when a patient with psychotic delusions was provided with incontrovertible, undeniable proof that their delusion was wrong, the common reaction was to first rave hysterically, denying the evidence, and then weep and crumple into incoherent nonsense.

With some patients, this could be a breakthrough that led to them accepting reality and dealing with life as it is; with others, it caused a further retreat into their hallucinatory world, some eventually becoming catatonic.

Look what’s happening with the right these days; radio propagandist ‘Tokyo Rose’ Limbaugh has slumped into hoping America slides down the tubes to save his shrunken ideology, while McConnell and his merry band of GOP moon-howlers are fighting battles with a man who has been dead for 64 years, furiously trying to demolish the history he made, while they tilt at windmills most Americans want to power our future of cheap green energy as we wean ourselves off of the Middle East oil teat.

Just ponder the true madness contained in these words of a prominent Republican Congressman, advising his colleagues on how to go about reelection in two years:

“Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban. And that is that they went about systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person’s entire processes.”
– Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the GOP 2010 Election Committee.

The GOP has openly declared war on the American psyche; a war they’re destined to lose just as surely as they lost Iraq, the economy, and the last two elections.

Michael Phelps article from the National Review

And then President Obama, and then George W. Bush, and then Bill Clinton . . .

Michael Phelps, the aquatic icon who won eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics, has violated the law. When a photograph of him smoking a bongful of marijuana was published, he admitted the crime. The same crime for which the better part of a million people were arrested last year.

Shouldn’t Phelps be charged? Along with President Obama and his two predecessors, all of whom, it seems, used illegal drugs? If not, perhaps it is time to have a serious debate about the drug laws.

Of course, Michael Phelps immediately apologized for his poor judgment. Attention turned to his sponsors, since their contracts include the usual moral clauses, which protect their investment in celebrities who behave foolishly, if not actually immorally. Happily for Phelps’s bank account, some of his big-money backers, including Speedo, Hilton, and Omega, accepted his apology. Subway and Visa haven’t been talking, but don’t look like they are going to jump. Kellogg’s, so far in the minority, announced it would drop Phelps.

But if marijuana use is so horrid as to warrant criminalization, why are we wasting time discussing whether Phelps will be able to keep his endorsement deals? Shouldn’t he be prosecuted—just like millions of other Americans, whose lives have been ruined by criminal convictions for smoking pot?

In 2007, 872,721 Americans were arrested for marijuana violations, 775,138 of them for possession. Some number of the latter undoubtedly were caught growing or selling and were charged with lesser offenses, but, in any case, hundreds of thousands of Americans ended up in jail for doing precisely what Michael Phelps did: lighting up. Roughly three-quarters of those arrested for marijuana offenses were, like Phelps, under 30. With most of their lives ahead of them, they face the greatest harm from prosecution under the drug laws.

So why shouldn’t Phelps go to jail?

To ask the question is to answer it. While smoking pot may be a stupid thing to do for many reasons—risking adverse health effects, endangering endorsements, undermining Phelps’s status as a celebrity role model—he hurt no one but himself. He could have been photographed while drunk and stumbling out of a party, and it would have been no different. Bad press and angry sponsors would have forced an abject apology, and everyone would have moved on. Just like with his marijuana hit.

Of course, advocates of prohibition argue that illicit drugs are different. And so they are—mostly because their use is illegal, a situation that creates the most serious problems usually associated with drug use.

The arguments are old but clear. Whatever the law might say, the people have voted with their lungs: 95 million Americans over the age of 21 have smoked pot, 20 million have smoked in the last year, and 11 million use the drug regularly. It’s hard to believe that all of them, almost one-third of the U.S. population, are criminals who deserve jail time.

Moreover, the violence associated with drugs is principally from prohibition rather than use. Drunks are far more likely to commit (and be victims of) violent crimes than are users of marijuana. Prohibition-era Chicago offered a dramatic lesson in the impact of banning a widely used drug. That city’s violent era is being played out on a larger scale in Colombia and Mexico, where urban and rural communities have been overwhelmed with drug-gang violence.

The health arguments remain disputed, but the basic question is whether we live in a free society in which people can choose to engage in risky behavior. Cigarette smokers, hang gliders, and rock climbers all take risks that many others view as unacceptable. That’s no reason for arresting them.

And it’s pretty hard to argue that marijuana use will prevent Phelps from being productive. Most all of us probably remember pothead classmates who ended up wildly successful in their chosen careers. Will some people use to excess? Yes, just as some people drink too much, gamble too much, spend too much, and act irresponsibly in a multitude of other ways. Criminal law is not the answer.

Is Michael Phelps likely to go to jail? No, and for good reason. But for the same reason, the rest of us should not be arrested for smoking pot, either. Whether marijuana use is good or bad is not the issue. Short of engaging in behavior that directly threatens others, people should be left alone. That’s what a society grounded in individual liberty is—or at least should be—all about.

Why I am Boycotting Kellogg’s

I love Special K cereal – it was my mom’s preferred brand when I was growing up (dad likes Shredded Wheat) and I continue to eat it and buy it for my kids. Two of them love it. But daddy isn’t buying it anymore.

When I heard this morning that Kellogg’s was pulling their endorsement relationship with swimmer Michael Phelps because of a photograph of him smoking marijuana I knew that it was time to find a new favorite cereal.

I have strong feelings on this issue for a personal reason. One of my close friends from childhood wrestled with a drug addiction and because he purchased drugs, he ended up in Federal prison. Hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars went to imprisoning him - a non-violent and generally productive member of society – not to mention the devoted father to his young son. What he needed, desperately, was treatment. Instead, our society continues to send the message that if you try drugs, even relatively mild drugs, you should be barred from employment and treated as a pariah. This is the very message that Kellog’s is sending today.

But my real anger on this issue comes from another direction.

Thirteen years ago one of my friends was killed by a drunk driver. She was visiting her mom and went out with a group of her friends from high school. She was in the back seat of a small car when a drunk driver rear ended them. She was in a coma for two days before she died.

When Phelps was arrested for DUI, Kellogg’s did not think that this was reason to not have him as a spokesman?

Kellogg’s should immediately release a statement explaining why drunk driving was acceptable in their eyes and smoking marijuana is a reason for someone to lose their job. Ford To Make Battery-Electric Powered Transit Connect Truck

DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- Ford Motor Co.'s (F) Transit Connect commercial truck, due midyear in U.S. showrooms, will feature a battery-electric powered version in 2010 promising 100 miles per charge, the company said in a statement Monday.

This is the first time Ford has said which of its products will feature a battery-electric powered counterpart. The auto maker intends to introduce a battery-electric powered small car in 2011 followed by a plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2012. Ford is showing off the gas-powered Transit Connect, starting at $21, 475, at the Chicago Auto Show on Wednesday.

Ford was the last of the Detroit auto makers to put a name to its electric powered vehicle plans. General Motors Corp. (GM) is working on the Chevy Volt, a Malibu-size four-door vehicle while Chrysler LLC has begun developing the two- seater Dodge Circuit. Both vehicles are to be introduced in 2010.

The announcement is another image boost for the U.S. auto industry, eight days before GM and Chrysler are scheduled to submit viability plans in order to access more federal low-interest loans. Ford hasn't needed to access the loans, although Wall Street analysts have said it's likely to be only a matter of time as the economy worsens.

In the past three weeks, the Detroit auto makers have worked out a deal with the United Auto Workers unions to get rid of the "jobs bank" program. GM and Chrysler have also begun a new round of worker buyouts and Fiat SpA is reviewing a deal in which it will take a 35% ownership in Chrysler in exchange for giving the third-largest U.S.-based auto maker access to its small car technologies.

Ford's Transit Connect is aimed at the small business owner since it is closer to a van - 6-feet,8-inches tall - than a full-sized pickup truck. It has a two- liter, four-cylinder engine and the cargo-space can be fitted with shelving, racks and bins to fit the customer's need. The Transit Connect will be imported from Kocaeli, Turkey.

When introduced here this year, the Transit Connect vehicle will be the first platform offered on five continents. Ford wants to introduce more "global platforms" as part of its plan to quickly get new vehicles in more regions with only minor adjustments. Ford is making the same move with the Fiesta subcompact due in the U.S. next year.

Whiff of change in US medical marijuana policy

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House won't say it explicitly. Neither will the Drug Enforcement Administration. Yet there is a whiff in the air that U.S. policy is about to change when it comes to medical marijuana.

The message is clear, said UCLA professor Mark Kleiman, a former Justice Department official and an expert on crime and drug policy.

"It is no longer federal policy to beat up on hippies," said Kleiman.

Tell that to the DEA.

In California this past week, agents raided four dispensaries in Los Angeles and seized 500 pounds of pot.

"It's a little bit surprising, because I think current DEA management didn't get the message," said Kleiman. "The message is, this is no longer drug warrior time. We are not on a cultural crusade against pot-smoking."

California law permits the sale of marijuana for medical purposes, though it is still against federal law.

Thirteen states have laws permitting medicinal use of marijuana. California is unique among them for the presence of dispensaries, businesses that sell marijuana and even advertise their services. Legal under California law, such dispensaries are still illegal under federal law.

"Anyone possessing, distributing or cultivating marijuana for any reason is in violation of federal law," Sarah Pullen, a DEA spokeswoman in Los Angeles, said Thursday.

That may be the law, but it contradicts the medical marijuana position of the new president.

"The president believes that federal resources should not be used to circumvent state laws, and as he continues to appoint senior leadership to fill out the ranks of the federal government, he expects them to review their policies with that in mind," said White House spokesman Nick Shapiro, repeating past statements.

So on Friday, DEA officials in Washington declined to comment at all on the subject.

As a presidential candidate, Obama repeatedly promised a change in federal drug policy in situations where state laws allow use of medical marijuana.

"I think the basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors, I think that's entirely appropriate," Obama told the Mail Tribune of Medford, Ore., in March.

A year earlier at a campaign stop in New Hampshire, Obama said: "I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users."

At age 47, Obama is part of a generation that had plenty of exposure to pot.

In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," he described time spent as a youth struggling with questions about his race and identity, and turning to drugs — including marijuana and cocaine — to "push questions of who I was out of my mind."

The new president is unlikely to make any official change in policy before he has a new DEA chief and drug czar in place.

Yet experts believe it is already clear the Obama administration will change the strategy, if not the law, on medical marijuana.

Philip Heymann, a former deputy attorney general in the Clinton administration who is now a Harvard professor, said it's time for the agency to put more effort into fighting drugs more dangerous than marijuana.

"I do expect him to appoint an administrator who takes marijuana less seriously than is traditional for the DEA, as I think most Americans do," said Heymann.

Heymann said he expects the Obama administration will eventually instruct the DEA to emphatically scale back raids on dispensaries, and conduct such raids only in instances where investigators believe a business is abusing the dispensary system as a cover for other criminal behavior.

So last week's raids in California may be the last of their kind.

"The DEA's not likely to want to confront a new president," said Heymann. "It may simply be that they're behaving as they have traditionally, and they haven't anticipated the change Obama and his spokesman are signaling."

Interfaith Peace-Builders sends delegations to Israel/ Palestine so that U.S. citizens can see the conflict with their own eyes. Participants have the opportunity to learn directly from Israeli and Palestinian nonviolent peace/human-rights activists, to spend time in Palestinian and Israeli homes, and to experience the situation of Palestinians living under military occupation. The delegations focus on seeing, listening to, and recording the experiences and perspectives of a wide range of Palestinian and Israeli voices.

Some delegations go to Jordan as well as Israel/ Palestine. Visiting these countries enables participants to see the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a broader Middle East context and to get a sense of the larger issues facing the region.

Interfaith Peace-Builders places a strong emphasis on continuing work on the conflict when participants return to their homes. The program asks for a commitment from participants to educate people in their communities and organizations about the conflict, to write and speak about their experiences, to join with IFPB, our partner organizations, and other local and national organizations working to end the conflict, and to work to change U.S. policy in the region.

Building on a long history of delegation work in the Middle East, the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) began Interfaith Peace-Builders in 2000 as a response to the intensified violence of the second intifada. Since that time IFPB has consulted and worked in partnership with Palestinian and Israeli organizations. We stand in support with Palestinians and Israelis striving to end the occupation of Palestine, working to ensure the human rights of both Israelis and Palestinians, and advocating an enduring peace with justice for both peoples.

In April 2006, FOR and Interfaith Peace-Builders reached the mutual decision that IFPB would become an independent program working in partnership with FOR, starting July 1, 2006. Building on the foundation of FOR’s strong support for IFPB’s work over the last five years, IFPB and FOR are confident that a new partnership relation provides the best opportunity to continue our crucial work on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Stars come out for Obama's inaugural balls

WASHINGTON (AP) — Revelers in black tie and gowns toasted Barack Obama on his first night as president, partying at the inaugural balls that are a time-honored tradition even in these lean economic times.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama will twirl their way through 10 official balls Tuesday night with an all-star ensemble backing them up, starting with a serenade of Etta James' "At Last" by Beyonce at the Neighborhood Ball. Across Washington, there were at least a dozen other unofficial balls where partiers were celebrating even without an appearance from the new first couple.

Most of the ladies wore black like their dates, but Patrick Landers was an exception in his kilt at the Biden Home States Ball. The 33-year-old Washington attorney moved to the United States from Ireland in 1998.

"I'm here to celebrate this great day and the beginning of a transformation in the United States and the rest of the world in creating a more inclusive society," Landers said.

Not everyone was so thrilled to be attending a ball. Singer Sheryl Crow, doing a sound check for a performance later at the Midwestern Ball, said she was homesick.

"I have not seen my child in four days. I'm miserable," she told her band between songs.

Despite the formal attire and celebrity entertainment, balls aren't overly fancy affairs. Lines often are long to get in, go to the bathroom or check your coat and the food is heavy on vegetables with dip and cheese cubes.

In a sign of the financial times, guests who already paid anywhere from $75 for a ticket to thousands more for a package deal had to buy their own drinks. Beer went for $6 and cocktails for $9.

Gregory O'Dell, a spokesman for the Washington Convention Center, said every inauguration is different, but several administrations in the past have offered free drinks at their inaugural balls.

"I think they were focused on being cost sensitive, obviously with the economy," he said.

The room was quite chilly at the Midwestern Ball, where Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, and wife, Elizabeth, huddled close and held hands. Asked what she most what she looked forward to at the inaugural ball this evening, Mrs. Kucinich joked, "Getting my coat."

The Obama's first stop, an event for D.C. locals, will be broadcast on ABC with performances by Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z, will.i.am, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Sting, Faith Hill, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder and Maroon 5.

Then it's off to Obama's Home State Ball for Illinois and Hawaii with Jack Johnson and Common performing; the Commander in Chief Ball for the armed forces with Jon Bon Jovi headlining an event to be broadcast to troops overseas, and the Youth Ball with Kanye West, Kid Rock and Fall Out Boy to be broadcast on MTV.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden also will both attend the ball for Biden's home states and five regional balls, with performers including The Dead, Marc Anthony and James Taylor.

In the past, inaugural dances have tended to be awkward affairs. The president and first lady take to the dance floor before thousands of supporters, twirl around awkwardly, then wave goodbye and move on to the next ball.

In 2001, reporters timed George W. Bush's forays onto the dance floor at each of nine inaugural balls. His first was 29 seconds. The longest stretch: 67 seconds.

"I confess I'm not the world's greatest dancer, but you're going to have to suffer through it," he told the crowd at the Florida state ball.
