Too Much? Obama Tackles Health Care

Those who say the President is taking on too much, remind me of a group of parents from my kid's school a few years back. They complained that the third grade teachers were assigning too much homework because they expected the students to spend at least 20 minutes a night completing assigned work. Of course, these same parents were concerned with reading and math levels at the school, and some even suggested that foreign-born students were bringing the scores down!

There comes a time when you have to get your priorities straight! With my parents, 'too much homework' would have been an oxymoron! Homework came before all other activities and I was expected to complete it...even if I had to stay up late on occasion (of course, this was usually when I left some work to the last minute...I got punished a lot for this :)

Telling the Obama administration to not tackle our health care problem, is like telling a drowning man to stop trying to get his head above water!

Health care challenges are 'killing us' literally and figuratively. Every family is either struggling with this problem, will be struggling with this problem, or knows someone who is.

We can't afford to get sick, and the American economy can't afford for us to get sick... the way the health care industry currently operates.

Money being spent on escalating health care costs, can't be spent in retail establishments, at car dealerships, for college education, to pay mortgages and debt, to buy gas, ...or most importantly, SAVED!

Doing nothing and watching millions more Americans give up on trying to pay for health care, will only cost us more in the future as they show up at hospital emergency rooms.

I am wondering....who are these people opposing health care reform?

Surely not American families who can't afford rising premiums, deductibles, and co-pays.

Surely not employers who are also faced with escalating costs to insure workers.

Surely not the unemployed who are praying for a job before their COBRA runs out (if they can afford COBRA.)

And, surely not our aging boomers and seniors, some of whom have to choose between food and medicine.

Even with everything on his plate, President Obama has to reform health care to prevent an America full of sick and bankrupt citizens

The People's Business

I voted for change, and so did most of the people around me. Here in Western Riverside County California we have been hit hard by the economic crisis – with some of the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the country. We want change and we want it now!

Not just change in the office of the Presidency, but also a change in the tone and behavior of our government leaders. We are sick of partisan politics and finger-pointing. We have no use for pundits and politicians—many of whom are totally out-of-touch with everyday Americans—giving us the same old buzz words, labels, and spin.

We want action. We want to move forward. We want a new game plan. We want solutions.

Barack Obama is a smart guy who has a good grasp of our current situation in America. We have given him the ball and we need to let him run with it.

He is doing the people’s business and Congress needs to get on board or get out of the way.

We voted for change.

While we are busy calling and canvassing, let's not forget those closest to us. We may assume they are voting or have transportation to the polls...but maybe not. Create a list of family, friends, and neighbors and make sure these folk are: 1.) Registered (if it's not too late in your area): 2.) voting by mail or in person; and, 3.) have transportation to the polls.

FOLLOW-UP AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE UNTIL YOU CAN CROSS THEM OFF YOUR LIST AS 'VOTED';

Complete for all eligible voters you know, example:

We’re Going All the Way…..

It’s been over 16 months since the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama encouraged me to get involved in the political process. ‘Encouraged’ may be too weak of a word. I felt ‘called’ to get involved with supporting the best candidate for President America has seen in a long time. I believed Obama when he repeated the motto “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

I started by signing up on this website and donating $10.00. There were only a few of us on the blogs back then, but as more people got to know our candidate the numbers swelled.

I’ve had quite a journey since getting involved with this campaign, including attending the DNC as a delegate and sitting close to the stage at Invesco. That night at Invesco was surely one of the highpoints of my life. When Senator Obama took the stage, all I could do was weep. I wept for what was and what wasn’t. But mostly I thanked God for ‘encouraging’ me to get involved! I also thanked God for Barack Obama—our country needs him.

So what now…..still much work to do. I’m not backing down and I know you won’t either……. We’re Going All the Way!

So they did it....they took the best (or maybe the worst) of Jerry Springer and came up with a candidate and a message.

She will play the gender card as a victim....the race card as an attacker. She will play the innocent victim against 'the cultural elite.' She will divide America between 'hard-working white, evangelicals' and 'those people.' She will be the 'innocent victim' against a media that asks her hard questions (if they don't let themselves get bullied.) She is a movie script where the spunky girl rises to power against 'those mean people' who make fun of her.

A party who could only bring 36 African-Americans to their convention, is ready to launch a civil war on us to keep the White House.

Palin is a PRODUCT of what the right-wing perceives as a winning formula! They will blame all of the country's ills on people who do not look like them or think like them.

Not this time!!

Dear John: Who did YOU vote for in 2004?

In a currently running ad, John McCain says that Washington is broken…that people are worse off than they were four years ago. HE IS RIGHT!

However….John McCain has been a part of ‘broken’ government for 25+ years, and…John McCain SUPPORTED the current administration that has made us worse off.

Did McCain vote for John Kerry in 2004? I think not! So, I guess he is part of the problem….

This year we will vote for change and GOOD JUDGMENT so that we will be BETTER off four years from now.

Name Games

Looks like the GOP is ready to play name games with Senator Obama. They've started throwing out the terms they want their surrogates to use. "Arrogant" and "Opportunistic" are the ones they are using the most. These are code words to imply "uppity black man" to the American public. GOP surrogates are more than willing to get these phrases out there and try to paint a false picture.

However...let's look at the picture Americans are really seeing:

Gas...over $4.50 a gallon and climbing.

Milk...over $4.00 a gallon and climbing.

Iraq war casualties...over 4000 and climbing.

Iraq war injured...over 40,000 and climbing.

Americans without health care...over 40 million and climbing.

High School dropout rate in America's 50 largest cities...over 40 per cent and climbing.

And the GOP wants to play school yard games? This is all they can bring to the national discussion?

Time for a change!

Back to the Future...PLEASE!

Now that both parties have a nominee, I am hoping that the national discussion will focus on the future of our great country. You see right now we are not only in a military fight, miles away, we are in the economic fight of our lives here at home! Everywhere I go I see casualties of this war: the anguished looks at the gas pumps....the shock at the supermarket....the brown lawns of foreclosed homes....and the families that are crumbling under too much financial stress.

This economic war is DEVASTATING to many Americans...regardless of income or geographic area. We are collectively 'going broke.'

What does the future hold? We know conditions won't turn around quickly...but where is the relief?

Let's talk about what we as a nation can do to get back on track...no pandering...we know there will have to be hard choices and sacrifices...we know we have a candidate who will tell us the truth...let's get started!

Our future depends on it!

What Hillary Did....

I will never forget what my daughter said to me after seeing the candidates on stage during the first televised Democratic primary debate. She said, "Mom, I might run for President one day!"

My African-American daughter said this because she saw Obama and Clinton on that stage.

For showing my daughter what is possible in America...I thank Hillary Clinton.

Lies, Lies, & More Lies Got Us Into Iraq

The American people were hoodwinked over Iraq...many of us knew this from the beginning!!

My personal opinion is it's not just the Bush Administration that needs to answer for this.

How about the journalists who didn't ask the hard questions?? How about the Congress members who not only didn't ask enough questions...but AUTHORIZED the action (I remember Kennedy and Wellstone being the most vocal of the dissenters...and Byrd...where were the others?) How about the evangelicals who were USED by the warmongers to support the President at any cost?

And...what about all the American citizens who were more concerned with buying bigger houses and bigger cars and more toys, and didn't pay enough attention to what was going on at the time?

Extremely Disappointed in the Clinton's

I can't tell you how disappointed...and dare I say HURT, I am over the behavior of Bill and Hillary Clinton during this Democratic race. I was one who supported them to the FULLEST during the scandals. I can't tell you how many arguments I had with friends and family members (including my spouse) about the Clinton's. I truly believed they were being persecuted, and I was very upset at the impeachment.

My husband always believed the Clinton's were opportunists and that they lacked integrity. And, while I did believe that Bill Clinton dishonored the office of the Presidency (literally and figuratively), I saved my venom for what I thought were the hypocrites in the GOP.

I have since apologized to my husband.

I can accept the toughness of a campaign and the desire to win...However....I cannot accept changing the rules in the middle of the game (cheating) or dividing your own 'family of supporters' by race, gender, income, age, geographic area, and culture...to win an election. Their motto seems to be "we will lie, cheat, or steal" to get to the White House.

Yes...I am angry and hurt! My prior rants about the Clinton's had more to do with the campaign...but, this is PERSONAL. Now, when she should be gracefully exiting the race, she continues to fuel the flames of division. And, to compare the 2000 Florida fiasco with what is going on now with the Florida and Michigan DNC delegates.....well that is beyond arrogance...it is beyond logic....and it is beyond behavior desirable in a Presidential candidate.

I see no difference between the Clinton's and the 'vast-right wing' they complained about. I will be glad when we can close the book on all-of-it.

Yes...I am angry and hurt....I put too much effort into supporting Bill Clinton....I always thought that in spite of imperfections...they were people who would do the right thing and didn't deserve the vitriol that followed them every where they went.

I was wrong.

Dear Undeclared Superdelegates...It is Time!

It is time for the undeclared supers of the Democratic party to throw their support behind nominee-to-be Obama. As HRC continues to kneecap the front-runner, the party and grassroots supporters around the country are in limbo.

It is time to take on McCain and the Republicans! They are organizing and fundraising for the General while this nightmarish Democratic race continues. While HRC supplies them talking-points and divides the electorate (and compliments Karl Rove’s opinion) they are salivating…..for the GOP it doesn’t get any better than this.

It is time to say thanks…but, NO THANKS to the Clintons. If they really cared about the party she wouldn’t be ‘appeasing’ women and rural voters by insisting SHE is the only one who represents them.

It is time to stop the hemorrhaging! We have to take the hit at some point: “HRC deserves the nomination” “She was forced out” “The people’s voices were not appreciated” This is spin she is ALREADY using and it will only get worse!

IT IS TIME! We can’t begin the healing process while the battle is still raging. HRC seems to have no incentive to end her quest in a dignified manner. Her ‘tantrum,’ and the damage it is doing, needs to end NOW!

It is time, superdelegates, ..it is time!

I must admit that months ago I could not fathom John Edwards as Obama's VP. He seemed too angry....too ready to 'champion his cause!' However, I never doubted his sincerity when he talked about the two Americas, and the haves and have-nots.

Well I think I've caught up to John Edwards way of thinking, now that gas and food are taking a major bite out of my budget. I'm angry too!

But, beyond that...the image of Obama and Edwards in Michigan today was too strong to ignore. I've got to say...this looks like 'the ticket' to me!

I heard it with my own ears....never thought I would hear a Democrat, or a Clinton, race bait!!! HRC is saying Obama can't win the white vote!!!!

ENOUGH!!!! She is dividing the party between rich/poor....black/white..... female/male....urban/rural...young/old!! THESE ARE RIGHT-WING REPUBLICAN TACTICS!!!

She needs to get out of the race NOW! I am starting to get really peeved (actually I want to use stronger words.)

It's time for the supers and the Democratic leaders to stand up to the Clinton's. There are a lot of us willing to work hard to elect this man President and work hard and donate to the party...HOWEVER....HRC is pissing people off!!!!! And, don't think AAs don't know what she is doing!!!

Wright is Wrong

I suppose Reverend Wright's ego got the best of him and he couldn't hold 'it' in any longer. His diatribes come at the worst possible time, and he seems determined to take us back to the talking points & tactics of the 1960's.

He is too intelligent of a man (I think) to have said some of the things he said yesterday morning, without knowing the effect it would have. Perhaps the beginning of senility?

If I didn't know any better, I would think he was working with the Clinton's. Hmmm.

He does not represent Barack Obama, he represents himself...whatever his motivations might be! Obama speaks of unity and moving us forward as a country. Wright divides us and takes us back.

I am hoping Americans can see the truth. I am hoping that Wright's religion will move his ego out of the way, and he will exit the public arena. (I have said the same of the Clinton's who have fanned the flames of racial discord to win.)

Obama's race toward the Presidency is 'bigger' than us and it will continue. America needs Obama to heal us from those who would divide us!

All of this continues to distract us from the 'Depression' our country is entering!

A DIRTY WIN Hillary Clinton won the PA primary using tactics that would make Karl Rove and the late Lee Atwater (remember Willie Horton?) proud. She swift-boated a member of her own party because she feels she is entitled to the nomination.

She is dividing Americans by race, gender, and income, and taking the Democratic race to the gutter--where she seems quite comfortable.

Is this what we want America? I think not....

As certain politicians, and their supporters, volley around the wedge issues of race and religion in an attempt to beat back the momentum of the Obama campaign, we are not putting the focus where it needs to be in this country.

We are letting a mainstream media, which spends much of its time covering out-of-control celebrities, set the tone of our nominating process. Of course they love controversy and slime...this is what they do these days!

In the meantime.....

Our young men and women are being injured and killed daily in Iraq, and our national treasure (billions and billions) is being spent on a war that never should have started. It is estimated that the war is costing us $275 million a day, and in the meantime.....
Gas prices are spiraling and no one will tell us the truth about the competition for oil (and food), and that even if they go down a little bit soon, high fuel prices will continue in the years ahead, and in the meantime...
Food prices are soaring...anyone who goes to the grocery store on a regular basis, and by that I mean at least once a week, will tell you that in some stores prices are changing daily...watch the faces of the elderly in the grocery store....they spend a long time in the staples section deciding what they can purchase (bread or milk?), and, in the meantime...
Home prices are dropping like a lead balloon, and that back up plan we had to use our equity to help with college tuition, or to take care of our parents, or for our retirement, looks less and less likely, and in the meantime.....
We are trying to elect a candidate who 'gets it' and will change how business is done in Washington. The other candidates are part of the problem...their years of experience have not prevented any of the problems mentioned above!

I could go on...but YOU know what we are facing. We NEED Barack Obama as President, but in the meantime, we've got to deal with pettiness, divisiveness, and selfishness.

Step aside Hillary, so we can focus on winning the general election and tackling the problems of everyday Americans!

We've Come Too Far to Turn Around Now!

Like many of you, I've been a supporter of Barack Obama since his awe-inspiring speech at the DNC convention a few years back. I was thrilled when he announced his campaign for the Presidency. I got involved in the ground campaign, wrote articles, blogged, and submitted comments on his behalf wherever I could! (I still do.)

I remember last summer when the polls reported that Obama was down by twenty or more points, and the media had practically coronated HRC. I even remember her supporters unabashedly providing the political commentary on stations like CNN, as if they represented all Democrats.

These were the type of things that were being reported at that time:

It was reported that HRC would get the Black vote because Obama wasn't Black enough. It was reported that Obama's war chest of small donations, based on online giving, would not be enough for a long-term campaign. It was reported that Obama supporters would not leave the comfort of their computer screens to campaign in their communities. It was reported that white men would not vote for Obama. It was reported that young people would not vote in droves. It was reported that boomers would not embrace this campaign. It was reported that people in South Carolina were heavily in favor of HRC because of her husband.

By the beginning of the year, the reporting had changed a bit, however:

It was reported that Obama would only win in caucus states. It was reported that Obama didn't have a strategy beyond Iowa. It was reported that, if Obama lost California, he was out of the race. It was reported that Obama could not get the backing of other Senators or senior members of the Democratic party. It was reported that Obama would not get working-class women to vote for him. It was reported that Obama would not get gray-haired women to vote for him. It was reported that Obama would not get middle-class moms to vote for him. It was reported that Republicans would not support a Democratic candidate in substantial numbers. It was reported that white men would not vote for Obama.

Yes...there was a lot of anti-Obama reporting going on! And, as I recall, he didn't whine about it...he just kept going!! HE PROVED THEM WRONG. He traversed the country with a message of hope and unity for a divided people.

Obama's message resonates to ALL searching for change in Washington and common-sense leadership. America 'gets it!' We know substance and quality when we see it.

Barack Obama has exercised good judgment throughout this campaign. This is the kind of class, leadership, and follow-through, that he will take to the White House! The other candidates for President are simply not in his league....they are in the minors compared to Barack Obama.

This is why we keep going. We believe in this man! We're going all the way.

We've come too far to turn around now.

'Just' Words

I am disappointed in a candidate who would attack a rival for quoting Martin Luther King Jr., and the Declaration of Independence, because he used a phrase many of us use: ‘just words.’ The fact that he had to make the statement in the first place, was because he was attacked for his inspirational messages. I find this reprehensible and totally against everything we stand for as a country.

We have reached a new low in politics when hoping and dreaming are attacked as not meaningful. What, I ask, should we replace inspiration with? Cynicism? Lying to the American people?

We have a candidate who is motivating new people to get involved in the political process in numbers never seen before. We have young and old dreaming of a united America. We have North, South, East, and West hoping we can come together to solve our challenges. We have people from all walks of life who do indeed believe in the just words of Martin Luther King and the just words of the United States Declaration of Independence.

…And, here comes a candidate….so desperate in her attempt to return her family to the highest office in the land…..so devoid of the inspiration required to lead our people…..so calculating in her quest for power…..so divisive in her approach to winning….here she comes to tell us hopes and dreams are not just.

I suppose next she will tell us of the unimportance of faith! She’ll never convince me of that, and hopefully the American people will not fall for it either.

I’m going to quote from the Bible here…again just words:

This is HUGE for our area which has been considered heavily conservative!! We are seeing tremendous support for Obama from all sides of the political spectrum.

Many of you have seen me on this (and many other) blogs for months now, but I decided to go 'beyond the web' and get involved in community organizing! I am now regional field organizer for Congressional District 44 (Riverside County) This was a big move for me, because I have NEVER been involved in a campaign!! I can tell you it's one of the most inspirational, worthy experiences of my life!!!

I encourage my fellow bloggers to get involved at the community level, or if nothing else...make calls on behalf of the campaign (visit action center for more info)

Here in Riverside, we are signing up Precinct Captains and have opened a local campaign office (grand opening this Sunday)

Again...the response is phenomenal!!! People in Southern California usually don't get too excited about things...but this is different!! We are united behind Barack Obama and the CHANGE he will bring to our nation. We are taking our country back!

A New Year....A New America

2008 awaits us!

For Americans everywhere, 2008 represents a chance to rebuild our country’s greatness! We say goodbye to the divisiveness of years gone by. We say no more ‘us versus them’….’rich versus poor’…..’red versus blue’….’urban versus rural’….’employer versus employee.’ These are the messages of yesteryear….these are the actions that prevent us from moving forward as a country, because we know: “A house divided against itself cannot stand!”(Lincoln)

We say goodbye to infighting, gridlock, scandals, secretiveness, and hidden agendas. We want the doors of our government thrown open. We want truth, and will stand for nothing less in the coming years, because we know: “The truth shall set us free!” (Jesus)

We say goodbye to choosing between ‘two evils’ when we vote. We want to vote for candidates with intellect and character. Barack Obama inspires us, and this is not a bad thing! We believe NOW is the time for Barack Obama as President, because he knows: “My job is not to represent Washington to you, but to represent you to Washington.” (Obama)

I believe the people of Iowa know that Obama ‘is the real deal’ and will provide him a sizeable victory. However, even if this does not happen…Americans all over the country are waking up to the potential of this great candidate, and we WILL move forward and win the election of 2008!

Americans are ready for a new day.

Merry Christmas to…..my fellow Obama supporters who have trumpeted the cause of this great candidate for many months! They call us 'hope-mongers' and 'dreamers' -- as if it is a bad thing to HOPE and DREAM. We go forward with FAITH that we are indeed supporting the person who can best guide our country back to the right track.

Merry Christmas to…..Barack Obama, his family, and his staff, who have so graciously given their time on behalf of America. We thank you for answering the call to serve.

The major reporting from the wire services is that McCain, Clinton, AND Obama, picked up major endorsements. The timing of the Boston Globe endorsement was impeccable and shows that the Obama campaign is indeed a force to be reckoned with.

However, we need to correct something I've seen in several places ....so listen here: Obama IS NOT the underdog in this race. He is the FRONTRUNNER!!!! I believe he understands this now; Believe me...Bill Clinton understands Obama is the frontrunner. We have to act accordingly!!

I suppose the 3 women at the DesMoines Register couldn't say no to their first endorsement of a woman presidential candidate....but, I don't think there was unity there. Perhaps it will come out in the weeks ahead.

However....we are FIRED UP & READY TO GO as ALWAYS!

We were FIRED UP months ago when the polls said our guy didn't have a chance!

We were FIRED UP when people were still saying Obama who!

We were FIRED UP when they said HRC was inevitable!

We were FIRED UP when they said we wouldn't raise much money because of our small contributors!

Iowa Debate Summary

Debate Summary.

I am a supporter of Barack Obama so I won’t pretend my views are objective, (unlike many of the folk over at the news network who seem to be Clinton plants). However, after months of watching the candidates and trying to determine their motivations and their hearts….here is what I came up with after today’s debate:

Candidate John Edwards

Key theme: poor versus wealthy

Key phrase: “corporate power & corporate greed”

Summary: This is not what America needs right now. He is a former trial lawyer who is used to these themes, and he’s probably won many cases doing this. We don’t need to be pitted against each other. At this time in our history, we need to come together to solve problems. He is a good guy though and means what he says.

Role in the Obama Administration: Not VP (unless situations force this leading into convention.) Maybe Secretary of Energy because we will need his toughness against oil interests, or even better Attorney General!

Candidate Bill Richardson

Key theme: I want to please!

Key phrase: “Can’t we all just get along”

Summary: Nice guy, but gives the impression he is trying too hard to please – or to be VP to HRC. Definitely can’t be the leader of the free world.

Role in the Obama Administration: Maybe, Secretary of Education.

Candidate Chris Dodd

Key theme: I remember when

Key phrase: “I’ve been working at this for years”

Summary: Seems to be a throwback to a prior generation! Even the staccato of his voice is reminiscent of war movies in the 1940’s. Good guy, but not who we want to lead America and change the way things are done in Washington.

Role in the Obama Administration: Definitely a cabinet position, not sure which one.

Candidate Hillary Clinton

Key theme: Revenge

Key phrase: “I’m ready to fight!” & “Remember the 90’s ”

Summary: Most couples who had spent 8 years in the White House would be content to pursue other goals. Not this couple…politics is all they know…politics is what keeps them together! I group them together, because this is just as much Bill’s race as Hillary’s. She is running on his experience. They are running to settle old scores. Does she say the right things…Yes. Is getting elected more important to her than DOING the right thing…Yes!

Role in the Obama Administration: None, because she and Bill would be maneuvering against him and plotting her next run for office. (Although if she could put aside her blind ambition and desire for revenge, she might be good in Education)

Candidate Joe Biden

Key theme: I’m enjoying this ride.

Key phrase: “I speak bluntly”

Summary: Seems a little too glib at times, but clearly is enjoying the process more than the others. He won’t win the presidency…he knows that, but he does have experience and heart.

Role in the Obama Administration: VP or Defense (if he can control the glibness.) This is a good guy and he and Obama just might make a good team. He knows his way around Capital Hill and will speak the truth to President Obama.

Candidate Barack Obama

Key theme: Called to serve

Key phrase: “this is bigger than me”

Summary: This is the person America needs right now. He will surround himself with the right advisors and he will use good judgment in making decisions on our behalf. He will move the country forward as he brings back our greatness. We will be admired by most of the countries of the world because of our progressiveness and our ‘audacity’ to elect a black guy named Barack Obama. This is what America is about! This is why we’ve always been the greatest country in the world!

Role in the Obama Administration: President.

Boomers for Barack!

There is a discussion among Americans over whether the activist baby boomer generation got stuck in the 1960's.

I think the boomer generation didn't get stuck...we just abandoned a lot of our principles in favor of the rampant materialism that overtook this country during the Reagan years.

Like most of the country, we joined the bigger is better, spend..spend..spend...mentality that has got us to where we are now!

Ecology took a back seat to bottled water.

Anti-war took a back seat to gated communities.

Civil rights took a back seat to 'looking out for # 1'

Education took a back seat to TV watching.

I am a boomer (52 years old) and I can tell you many activists changed as they got older, bought houses, and had kids. Many became more conservative...some stopped caring about life outside their own house!

However...Obama has reawakened this sleeping giant of activists!

At his event in L.A. on Monday night, the two groups MOST represented were college kids and boomers....and I can tell you, we boomers were still there dancing to Stevie Wonder and Mavis Staples long after the college kids left!!

The boomer generation didn't get it wrong, they just forgot what they stood for. We WILL stand again. We boomers...who will NOT go quietly into the night...are still the generation that drives this country.

Thanks to Obama...we remember who we are!

As I get more involved in the Obama presidential campaign, and meet with supporters and activists in my local area, I am encouraged by the diverse group of Americans that support this campaign. You see….these aren’t just any Americans to me—these are my friends, neighbors, and community leaders—many of whom have never been involved in a political campaign.

These are the people I see at the shopping center, at the gas station, at the school, and at church. Some are boomers—nostalgic for a long ago time of hope, passion, and commitment to American values. Some are parents—concerned about the America they are leaving their children and grandchildren. Some are students—ready to flex their muscle and make a difference in the world. And…some are like me—people who sense something special about Barack Obama’s potential to lead this country, and feel called to get involved.

These are men and women of all races, incomes, backgrounds, and political persuasions. They understand that it is important to have a President that tells the truth, and puts American interests over politics.

I think my friends and neighbors understand that too much is at stake now…we can’t get it wrong this time! We simply MUST elect a smart, capable, honest American for president! We can no longer tolerate the warring among political parties that has intensified the last two decades, and causes gridlock in our government.

It is time “to bind up the nation’s wounds” and move forward. I believe, God has sent us the right person for this time in our American History. The group fundraiser for 'Boomer Women for Obama' is about to kickoff! Our theme is 'Change for Change' and we have been searching old purses and scrounging around the house collecting loose change. We know THIS campaign appreciates small donations, so we will give what we can.

It is imperative that we keep the fundrasing going because this is the holiday season and our attention (and funds) turn elsewhere. But, I ask you...what better GIFT can we give ourselves, our family, and our country, than Barack Obama as president in 2008!

We are one year away from the election....and 'CHANGE for CHANGE' will have a different theme for the next 51 weeks. Here are the first few:

When a Woman Runs For President

After watching the Iowa debate, my eight-year-old daughter informed me she might decide to run for president one day. She said it nonchalantly, as if there was no question that she, as an African-American female, could someday be a serious contender for the American presidency. I knew this was because of the people she saw on stage during the debate – an African-American man and a female.

We have indeed come a long way in America, and I hope that my own daughter, and little girls of all races, KNOW that they can run for office. They see the possibilities and this is good. I have no doubt that we will one day have a female president…but, when we do, I hope that she wins because she is the best PERSON for the job, and not because she is a woman. I hope this woman rises to the top on her OWN accord, without depending on the record of a spouse, or dad, or brother. I also hope she ‘stands for something’ other than getting elected.

One day we will have a woman candidate for president who reflects the values of the American people, and stands strong on her convictions. We will know her policies because she will tell us. She will be confident, but not smug….strategic, but not crafty….smart, but not condescending. She’s coming! She’s not here yet…but, she’s coming!

I am encouraged by the strength and the confidence I see among the young women and girls of today. Even my own daughter has been known to show her toughness when necessary. Recently, after being picked on by a male classmate at school, she didn’t run crying to the playground supervisor, instead she reminded him, “I have a foot and I’m not afraid to use it!” This is the kind of PERSON I want for president!

It goes without saying, I support Barack Obama for president. Not because he is black, not because he went to Harvard, not because he can dance…but, because he is the BEST PERSON running in terms of intellect, judgment, and character. Also, he “has a foot, and isn’t afraid to use it!”

Who today brings the American people the ‘real’ facts?

Certainly not our media or current crop of government representatives. We are bombarded with more facts about Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan than facts about what is ‘really’ going on in our country or the world.

There are many Americans today who are searching for the truth. The truth about what it’s going to take to get us out of Iraq. The truth about why we are in a rush to war with Iran. The truth about how prepared we are for disasters. The truth about our oil shortage and how gas prices will rise. The truth about the environment and what we are doing to our planet. The truth about the economy and what is happening to the middle class. The truth about the global economy and how it affects immigration and outsourcing. The truth about rampant materialism and how it is destroying our lives. The truth about our broken political system, and why we have gridlock.

We want the truth! We are not children…we will not panic. We don’t need a candidate who wears a fake smile and says “There…there…just trust me and things will be ok. I won’t tell you what I’m going to do…just trust me.”

We don’t need a candidate who’s the great “protector” and will have our troops fighting all over the world without a plan.

We don’t need a candidate who doesn’t know the difference between Obama and Osama and is slimy enough to try to make them the same.

Now more than ever we need character…we need judgment…and we need truth!

We NEED Barack Obama as President in 2008.

Barack Obama is the candidate who best exemplifies the values and ideals that made this country great. He alone possesses the experience required to lead America to a glorious future.

By experience, I do not mean years spent in battle with the opposing political party.

By experience, I do not mean putting the desires of special interests, ahead of the needs of the American people.

By experience, I do not mean casting aside judgment, in favor of political chips to be cashed in later.

By experience, I do not mean being all things to all people, instead of being consistent and honest.

By experience, I do not mean drawing on family connections to advance a career, instead of standing on one’s own accord.

By experience, I do not mean authorizing our young people to be sent to fight the wrong war, because of popular opinion at the time.

By experience, I do not mean putting POLITICS above AMERICA!

Like the great American leaders who preceded him—Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, King, and Parks—Obama has risen to the moment! This is what great leaders do! He is a man of the times, and exactly what America needs right now.

We NEED a person with a worldview…someone who has lived among the peoples of the world, and understands their viewpoint—while still championing our American values and interests.

We NEED a person who represents the various cultures of our own country, while also understanding we are stronger as a nation when we unite.

We NEED a person who has empathy for the ‘withouts' in our society, as evidenced by Obama’s decision years ago to forgo a big income, in favor of serving in the community.

Which brings up another point….

We NEED a person who understands that money is not the solution for all of our ills, and there are more important things, like family, friendships, and faith.

We NEED a person who will be honest with us as we tackle the many issues of our time on this planet, and not just tell us what we want to hear, or what they think we need to know.

We NEED a person who will bring in fresh faces, fresh voices, and fresh solutions from both parties, and end our political gridlock.

And finally, we NEED a person who inspires us to look toward the future, instead of reminding us of the mistakes of our past.

Yes….it’s Obama time!

If we want to bring America back to its glory…if we want to leave our children a better tomorrow….if we want to elect the person with the BEST experience for where we are now…if we want to say “AMERICA IS BACK!.....AMERICA IS BACK!” ….we NEED Barack Obama!

Family Voting Day

Don't know about you...but, I can't wait for FAMILY VOTING DAY which for me will be February 5.

On that morning, I will go to my local voting site with my husband, and we will vote.

When I drop my kids off at school, I will talk to the other parents, encourage them to vote, and offer a ride to anyone who needs it.

I will drive my mom and her friends to their voting sites. I will call my friends and relatives to remind them to get out and vote. I will drive forty miles to pick up my in-laws and get them and their friends to their voting sites.

I will pick up my son from the high school and take him and his friends to vote (even if I have to drive them all over town). This will be the first time voting for most of them, and I will make a big deal out of it -- maybe even have a party for them at my house! That afternoon, I will re-check in with family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they voted...even picking them up and taking them if I have to...oh heck...I'll invite them to my party also!

So you see, I'm looking forward to FAMILY VOTING DAY! But, long before I will have let everyone know why we need to elect Barack Obama and why he best represents our interests...locally, nationally, and internationally. There is a lot of work leading up to FAMILY VOTING DAY in my house...but I can't wait!

The Coronation of the Clinton's - I Get it Now!

For the past few months, and especially the last few weeks, I have watched the MSM headlines and pundits unashamedly favor Clinton as the Democratic nominee. I had assumed that the Clinton machine, which has had years to plan and plant supporters into media organizations, was the reason.

I still believe this to be partially the case…however after viewing parts of the Republican debate last night, and watching Republican candidates make the same assumption about Clinton’s inevitability, I finally get it!

Republicans desperately WANT to run against the Clintons ...so they are probably helping with polling, pundits, and fundraising on behalf of the Clintons. Republican's are practically chomping at the bits for another battle with the Clinton’s. And… I believe it works both ways…the Clinton’s are chomping at the bits to take on the Republican’s and get revenge for the humiliation they suffered regarding the Lewinsky affair and numerous other Republican-led investigations during their past tenure.

It is understandable that the ex-president and his wife would want to rewrite their legacy. Beyond that, I think their raw ambition has them convinced they can lead the WORLD (an unofficial King and Queen)

If Clinton were to win the Democratic nomination, America will be subjected to one of the ugliest, most bitter campaign seasons we have ever seen. It would surpass Gore-Bush and do nothing to heal the partisan divide that was heightened after that ‘election.’ A Clinton versus Republican race for the White House would be TOO divisive for our country. We would go through more years of gridlock, investigations, and nastiness… regardless of which side won.

The Republicans want Clinton to run because they strongly believe they can beat her. So Republican operatives, like Clinton operatives, are ‘coronating’ her as the Democratic nominee! I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Republican money found its way to her campaign coffers in the third quarter to assure a win in fundraising.

Yeah…I get it now. We are being set up for the battle to end all battles….Clinton versus a Republican candidate for president. Who will win? Definitely not the American people.

We need to make this clear to the electorate. They need to understand why we need a break from the past and a uniter like Barack Obama. I hope people will wake up to this 'rush to battle' being waged on us by the Clinton's AND the Republicans!

Why Obama Supporters Keep Believing

We're called 'naïve' and some consider us 'irresponsible' for throwing our support and resources behind an upstart candidate….a newcomer who has captured the imagination of Americans of all ages, of all ethnicities, of all incomes, from coast-to-coast. Despite the constant bombardment of 'spin' and 'polls' which insinuate there is really only 'one' candidate for the democratic nomination (and the presidency!) we keep going and we keep believing.

Why?

We are tired of POLITICS AS USUAL in our country. We are tired of having to hold our nose when we vote. Instead of choosing between the lesser of two evils…we want to choose from the best and the brightest! Barack Obama is the best and the brightest of the candidates running. Few would discount his intelligence, but it goes beyond that. Obama has the character and judgment that has been lacking in some of our brilliant politicians. We cannot continue with POLITICS AS USUAL and more of the same. Change is more than a word that one picks up when it is convenient to do so. Barack Obama embodies change more so than any other candidate. As one of my Republican friends put it, "He’s fresh. He hasn’t been tainted like the candidates who have been around awhile." Obama doesn't have 'axes-to-grind' or major corporate interests to please. This is why we have gridlock in Washington and our country suffers from it. This is the reason we don't have healthcare, a workable energy policy, or inspected food and toys.
We want the war to end, and our country to be protected. As long as our government is locked in partisan politics, scandals, and finger pointing – the hard decisions will not be made. We trust Barack Obama to put all his energy into making America safe and secure, and undoing this 'mess' in the middle east our Congress authorized. With an Obama administration we won't have to pay marketing or PR consultants to help us develop a better image in the Middle East. We will have a president that has lived among the people of the world and can communicate with them in an effective way. (And…he is not afraid to talk to them and 'tell-it-like-it-is'....yes, we need someone who has worked in the south side of Chicago) We believe President Obama will not rest until our troops are home in the most timely way possible. He won't get to the white house and start posturing and planning his reelection. He will get there and do OUR BUSINESS.
We want unity, not polarization. We believe Barack Obama will unite this country by turning the tide on the divisive politics that have been in play for many years!
The bottom line for most Americans is our faith and our family. Obama is the faith and family candidate. He hasn’t spent the last few decades enmeshed in politics and putting up a 'front' of a happy family life. He has a 'real' family and understands our issues. Not a trophy/political family…and thank God his wife and children still love and respect him!

Yes, there are other candidates with similar credentials…but none of them embody ALL that Barack Obama has to offer. And, then there is what’s commonly referred to as the 'it' factor. Some call it charisma, some call it destiny, some call it luck. My personal opinion is that it is divinely inspired. But, whatever 'it' is….Barack Obama has it.

All Americans need to take an honest look at this guy and imagine the country with a President we can respect and admire. Imagine a President who unites us behind common goals! Imagine a President who brings out the best in America. This is why Obama supporters keep believing.

We don’t care about what the other candidates are doing and saying because we know those are just actions to get elected. We don’t care about polls or media, because we know they can be manipulated and don’t always reflect reality. We don’t care about debates and forums because we know they are mostly carefully crafted sound-bites. However, we do care about America.

We are not naïve, we are hopeful. We are not irresponsible, we are practical. We support Barack Obama because he is the best candidate for president America has seen in a long time…and, our future demands that we get it right this time!

Thousands of Americans showed up to see and hear Barack Obama in NYC. Official estimates are over 24,000 people!

George Clooney says that Obama has "rock star" appeal...but, it is much more than that! He has the hope of generations of Americans (especially us boomers) who remember a time when people came together to end a war, enforce civil rights, and lead the world!

Boomers especially need to take a look at this guy because I think he has the best chance of solving our biggest issue -- healthcare!

Yes...the other candidates are saying similar things...but they have been around so long....played the game so long....that they are tainted. They ONLY know how to govern ONE way and we will continue to have gridlock!

Obama as president will get things done and we the people will continue the movement because there are a lot of changes that need to be made in our impotent Congress (in both parties!)

This is only the beginning of the rallies. Get involved in this people's movement now!

Tired of "You Know Who"

I am tired of reading about and posting about “You know who.” I am just as guilty as everybody else who feels the need to lament her shortcomings. Every blog I read (and write) eventually gets back to “You Know Who.” We are all beginning to sound like scorned lovers who can’t let go of the past (which is what she represents). I guess it really is time to move on.

So what to talk about…maybe some creative ways to get our candidate, Barack Obama, elected President of the United States. We know that first he must win the Democratic nomination. So what can we do? We know about the fundraising, canvassing, and phone banking activities. What are other creative ways we can accomplish our goal? Any ideas?

I think getting new people registered to vote is crucial, especially young people and seniors. If nothing else, we can all make sure our family members and friends are registered (and get absentee ballots for seniors.)

I’m excited about some of the upcoming events…including the rallies and canvasses. Hopefully, we will start grabbing some headlines from the major media markets (NYC, DC, and L.A.) It will take a bit more creativity from the campaign, but I know they are up to it.

So can we at least go a day without commenting on “You know who?” (or maybe a week? a month? a year? four years?:)

Mandatory Healthcare - Guess Who Will Benefit?

At the center of candidate Clinton's plan is MANDATORY healthcare insurance. While we all know of the problems with our current system, MANDATORY healthcare will leave all Americans at the mercy of the insurance companies who will continue to raise rates. And...what will happen to those who for whatever reason don't purchase insurance? Will they be charged with a crime (like driving without a license.) So I guess the crime would be -- living without insurance.

And, will insurers be held to the same standards and NOT be able to kick people out of their plans?

Senator Clinton says this MANATORY insurance will be like what we currently have with auto insurance. Our rates go up after an accident so...will our rates go up after an illness?

We know who will benefit from Senator Clinton's plan and it's not us.

Barack Obama also recognizes the need to reform healthcare, however he DOES NOT CALL FOR MANDATORY INSURANCE.

The campaigns should get fast and furious now...especially since so many primaries have been moved up!

It makes no difference who we support if we are not registered to vote in the Democratic primaries. Not only that...we need to make sure our friends and family members are registered.

Some of My Best Friends Are Republican

How did the country get so divided? Wasn’t there a time when we could agree to disagree? I disagree with a lot of people.

I disagree with my daughter who thinks High School Musical 2 is the greatest movie ever made.

I disagree with my son who thinks it’s okay that his room looks like a garbage dump.

I disagree with my mother about the need to have every single dish, knife, fork, and spoon, washed and put away before bedtime. (I tried to tell her this when I was 14 and got grounded.)

I disagree with my brother about which one of us is the least like our mother. (Please don’t tell her…she will ground me again)

And, most off all, I disagree with my husband about every opinion he has.

I disagree with these people, but I love them!

There are times when I disagree with friends and acquaintances about politics, but it doesn’t affect our relationships. There’s nothing like a good debate among friends!

Is the country really as partisan as the pundits try to make us?

I think most Americans want the same things: job opportunities (in this country), a living wage, merit pay, the ability to buy a house (and keep it), adequate heath care, quality education for our children and the ability to send them to college, and something to live on when we get older. And, if we have to send our children to war to defend American interests…we want to know our commander-in-chief, his advisors, and our Congress… have thought out all possible options.

I bet most people would agree with this.

So why then can’t we come together to solve our problems?

Okay, so I guess this is a ‘naive’ point of view….however, it doesn’t take years of ‘experience’ to know we are in gridlock as a country because of partisan divisions. Whoever is in power wastes time trying to get ‘even’ with the other side. Red versus Blue; Democrats versus Republicans…NOTHING IS GETTING DONE! Getting elected and maintaining office is more important than governing. The only happy folk are the special interests who are able to buy their own candidates.

My Republican friends share the same family values as my Democratic friends. Yes, there are many issues we disagree on, but it’s not always along political party lines. There are Democrats firmly opposed to abortion…there are Republicans who support gay marriage. It’s not always black and white….only on the news shows.

Some of my best friends (and my brother) are Republican. They are not attack dogs or part of a right-wing conspiracy. They just tend to relate more to the positions of the Republican party. I think they are wrong sometimes, (okay…many times) but, I respect their opinions.

I am a Democrat (for now.) I am not a lunatic, and my heart does not bleed for people who expect handouts. I will however, argue day and night over the needs of the afflicted, the young, the elderly, and the downtrodden. My Republican friends respect this.

Scripture tells us …..There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. This is not a season for battles. It is a season for reconciliation. The candidate who best exemplifies this will be our next president.

I believe that person is Barack Obama.

The Emergence of Barack Obama

Senator Obama was simply OUTSTANDING in today's debate in Iowa. He was comfortable and confident. His charisma and class outshone everyone else on stage. Never before has the difference between Obama, and the 'status-quo' candidates, been so apparent. He is the driving force and they are now revolving around him. This is leadership....and beyond his backgound and intellect...what he has is a 'gift' from God that can not be emulated. HE IS A BORN LEADER....not a manufactured leader.

Clinton's approach is that of a 'fighter.' It is apparent she is relishing a fight with Rove, Bush, and the 'Republican Attack Machine.' She is 'bring-them-on' lite. It is understandable that she would be carrying a grudge after her years in Washington, and what she and her husband have gone through. (Bush also probably carried a grudge into the White House -- against Saddam) The problem is...we are tired of fighting! Republican's are not attack dogs, they are Americans. Obama understands this. He is not carrying baggage from the past that will keep him from building coalitions to solve American problems. Not only that, he understands the MORAL IMPERATIVE to unite Americans and not divide them.

Edwards has worthy goals...but, he is also an 'us versus them' candidate. He is fighting for relevancy without the charisma and freshness of Obama. He is struggling to grab some headlines....the problem is, leaders don't have to struggle. They make decisions (such as Obama's recent decision to limit forum appearances) and others....including the media, follow.

Yes...Obama has emerged as the American leader...the front-runner in the 2008 campaign. The others can only follow.

Fighting From the High Ground

In the climatic scene from the last Star Wars movie, Obi-Wan Kenobi battles his young padawan, Anakin Skywalker, in a fiery pit. During the pivotal scene, Anakin, drunk with power, decides to jump over the saber-bearing Obi-Wan.

He is warned not to try it, “It's over Anakin, I have the high ground,” Obi-Wan tells him. “Don’t try it!”

Anakin attempts it anyway, and his legs are cut off by Obi-Wan. He then falls in the fiery furnace, and completes his descent to the dark side.

In the battle for the presidency in 2008, if we are to fight, we must fight from the high ground. As we fight, we must cling to the ‘politics of hope’ versus ‘the politics of division.’ We are Obama’s Army—Americans from all walks of life, who believe he is the only candidate who can change the ‘politics of division’ that is stagnating our nation.

The ‘politics of division’ is practiced on both sides of the aisle, and by the media… It keeps the country divided and off-center, while the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle-class disappears.

The 'politics of division' is based on spin and semantics. It uses the scandal hungry media to attack candidates with ridiculous assertions and twists of words. It is similar to first-graders on a playground reciting an endless litany of ‘he said…she said.’

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of stupid word games among adults running for president!

The other candidates have played the game for so long, they are thoroughly enmeshed in it. “I’m the one who can take on the other side,” they say. What they are really saying is: “I have lot’s of battle experience – expect more years of battle if you elect me.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of year after year of political battling!

We are Obama’s army. We will fight from the high ground. We have a candidate who says: let’s work together to solve our myriad of problems, instead of setting up battles for the years ahead. We have a candidate who is focused on common-sense solutions, rather than continuing a failed legacy.

The Clinton’s had their chance to implement everything they are talking about now—they failed. Edwards had a chance to bring a winning message to the voters in the last election—he, and his running mate, failed. And, they ALL failed at keeping us out of Iraq!

The attacks are starting, and we will fight back from high ground! We are not going to let this candidate – Barack Obama – who brings us more hope than we’ve felt in many years – we are not going to let him get dragged into the political pit the others are in.

We are Obama’s army…our weapon is faith….we will fight from the high ground!

It's scheduled to air today. I tried to represent us the best I could...I talked about OUR issues...healthcare, gas prices, college tuition, etc. Everything facing middle class families and why we are fed up with politics as usual.

I also talked about this site and how it allows us 'grass roots' people to organize and give our opinions.

Can't quite remember all I said (put a mike in front of me and I tend to rant!) but, I was very clear about my support of Obama and what he represents to us. Can't wait to see what is aired.

The Front-Runner

First of all, congratulations to Senator Obama for dominating the airwaves (and the Internet) the past couple of weeks with common-sense foreign policy initiatives. Whether pundits were complimentary or critical, they 'spelled his name right' and his viewpoints were EVERYWHERE! Obama drove the discussion and everyone else followed. This is leadership.

Second, Obama is competing against the 'Stepford Candidate' who is attempting to waltz her way into the presidency by not ruffling any feathers, and being 'all things' to 'all people.' They are using words like 'flawless' to describe her campaign. Who wants that? I don't know about you, but 'flawless' people scare me--I don't know where they 'really' stand. Give me someone who's not afraid to get knocked down and bruised. Give me someone who STANDS for what they believe in, regardless of the mud that is thrown their way. This is leadership.

Third, Obama is 'telling it like it is' and not beating around the Bush with sound bites and carefully thought out commentaries. We need this! We respect this! This is the way to run a race. This is the way to run a country. This is leadership.

I think this presidential election....I HOPE this presidential election...will rewrite the book on WHO runs for office, and HOW they run.This Obama campaign is showing the world who the real 'Front-Runner' is.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

Let’s keep going strong Obama supporters.

There is an effort to paint Hillary as the nominee with an “insurmountable” lead. It’s just a ploy to stop the Obama bandwagon.

Don’t get distracted from this HISTORY-MAKING campaign.

Obama made a MAJOR foreign policy speech today, signaling a change in direction, and a realization of what Americans are facing internationally. Some of the pundits and other candidates are already spewing forth their same old tired lines about ‘experience.’

Well…their ‘experience’ is what has gotten us to this point!

I DO believe that the election of Barack Obama as President, will signal to the countries of the world that America has a STRONG leader who is intellectual, fair, and willing to do what is necessary for the security of America. From day one, they will know that our policy will be changing--we will no longer ‘talk tough’ and ‘walk limp.’

Finally….we have an American leader who will fight for us, (face-to-face if he has to) and not just don cowboy hats and boots and spew ‘John-Wayne’ like rhetoric.

Finally….we have an American leader who will take the time to ‘personally’ know what is going on in other countries and not just depend on aides and advisers.

Finally….we have an American leader who will come into office with a plan, and not wait to see which way the wind is blowing.

Finally….we have an American leader who can communicate with foreigners, because he has been exposed to a world view.

Finally….we have an American leader who knows that America is the greatest country in the world, not because of our ability to wage war, but because of our people and our beliefs.

Finally….we have an American leader who knows when to fight….how to fight…and where to fight.

If we must send our young men and women into war….this in the kind of leader we need.

Don’t get distracted Obama supporters! This Democratic-led Congress is bogged down in hearings, and charges, and counter-charges – which NO ONE outside the beltway gives a hill-of-beans about! Many are taking vacations this month, so the media will be grasping. And...the Hillary campaign is desperately trying to make Obama a non-issue by fall. Ain’t gonna happen!!

Keep your eyes on the prize, Obama supporters. The prize is a great American leader – Barack Obama – becoming president.

Pennies For Progress

Hello Friends!

Glad you are part of Boomer Women For Obama!

I have been thinking of possible events for our group. (I do realize we are national.)

As a start I've come up with a 'Pennies For Progress' fund raiser. The goal is to see how much we can raise by Oct. 30th. Perhaps we can compete with other groups or locations.

I will suggest to my friends and family members that they start collecting and donating their loose change. Is Coinstar national? Perhaps people could mail in their Coinstar receipts. (or just convert their change to bills and send in the equivalent amount)

I will write a letter that you all can use if you want. Some of the things I will suggest:

--giving up a latte or special coffee
--emptying out pockets and purses of spare change
--encouraging kids to contribute their change (I'm sure my son has $20 in quarters on the floor of his room)

You get the idea. I NEED YOUR INPUT! Do you think this is a good idea? Should we challenge the other groups we are in? (this might be good for the mom's group????)

Let me know what you think of 'PENNIES FOR PROGRESS' and give me ideas on how to implement it.

I've been a registered voter for many years and NO ONE has ever contacted me. I know the online polls are easy to manipulate so I don't take those seriously. But, what about the other polls? What is their 'scientific' method? Do they have a political agenda -- are they trying to influence the populace?

It seems we have given the people who run these polls a lot of power!

Have you ever been contacted by a polling organization? Your family members? Your friends? Your co-workers? Your neighbors?

Yes!!!! It's good to see Obama take the offensive against the Clinton campaign. They are trying to squash his momentum and 'coronate' Clinton as the nominee.

The American people are tired of 'dictators' and being told what to think.

With Obama we see fresh ideas and a leader who can go toe-to-toe with world leaders instead of playing politics.

I've always appreciated a person who can look another person in the face and say what they think, rather than hiding behind polls, politics, or 160,000 US troops.

Notes From a Cheapskate

Since my $10.00 contribution to the Obama campaign was mentioned in a Washington Post article earlier this week: (A Foundation Built on Small Blocks; Growing Internet Use Helps Obama to a Wide Base and a Money Lead; Washington Post; July 16) I have received many comments on being a cheapskate for donating so little. In addition, some assume that since I am a writer, the story was not genuine. I assure you, I have never met or spoken to Barack Obama, and never knowingly talked to anyone from the campaign.

Yes…I am a writer…but I’m also a wife, mother, and Christian, who is very concerned about the direction the country is heading. I DO believe that we must use the talents we’ve been given for the common good. Mine is writing—so here it goes:

I am not cheap…I am just an average middle class American trying to make it. My husband and I are both self-employed, and part of the disappearing middle-class in this country. These are my issues and why I’m getting involved in this campaign:

Our health care premiums are astronomical and keep rising!
It takes a lot more for me to fill the tank in my 1998 minivan, and I now have to plan my trips.
Heating and cooling our house is costing more as the temperatures seem more extreme, and I’m beginning to think there’s something to this Global Warming idea.
I have a diabetic Mom who’s barely getting by on Social Security, and every now and then, I like to treat her to a meal or a new dress.
I have elderly relatives who can’t afford caregivers and I worry what will happen to them in the years ahead.
My son will be going to college next year and we worry about paying college tuition (which is also rising).
My 8 year old is in a public school system that is more concerned with test scores than learning.
I don’t feel real comfortable with our homeland security seeing as though we couldn’t rescue people from rooftops in a non-war situation.
I am mad at all of those Democratic leaders who didn’t stand up to Bush regarding the war…. and now they want to yell about how wrong it is.

There is more, but I think you get the point.

So, yes maybe I am a cheapskate. These days I don’t have a lot of disposal income, and the $10.00 I gave came out of my family budget. In the article, I said the money means one less trip to a fast-food restaurant, but that’s not quite true, because it costs more than $10.00 for my kids and I to eat there these days.

I am ready for a change and that’s what Obama represents to me. I think he is sensible, intelligent, and will put America back on the right tract.

As I said….I am part of the disappearing middle class in this country. I have a feeling there are a lot more like me out there. We give small amounts because that’s all we have to give.

I will do my best to make sure our voices are heard!

What THEY Don't Know

The pollsters and pundits are scratching their heads. For decades THEY have ‘called the shots’ on U.S. elections. THEY tell us who our leading candidates are, and who will win elections. THEY gather in groups of two and four in television studios in New York and Washington, where they yell at each other and make ‘predictions’ based on their ‘secret’ knowledge of the voting habits of the American populace.

Who are these knuckle-heads? THEY don’t know me, my neighbors, or my community. THEY don’t know the people of the world. THEY just know their small circle of pundits, pollsters, and politicians.

Now, THEY are trying to get a grip on what is going on with this election. In the meantime, THEY play the same game they have played for years…racial politics (black vs. white), gender politics (women vs. men), geographic politics (red states vs. blue states), class politics (poor vs. rich), sexual identity politics (gay vs. straight), age politics (young vs. old), population politics (urban vs. rural), and religion politics (believers vs. non-believers.) This is how elections have been written about and debated for years. This is old media and old tactics.

What THEY don’t know is…it’s a new day. Communication to and from Americans is no longer only in the hands of a select few. The Internet has leveled the playing field. We can talk to each other and discuss the issues THEY gloss over with spin and cutesy remarks.

So THEY continue to play old politics while trying to figure out what is going on. THEY still want to tell us who our front runner is. THEY still want to tell us we are either liberal or conservative. THEY still want to tell us what we believe. THEY still want to tell us how we’ll vote.

What THEY don’t know is…this is just the beginning. This is not a Youtube movement…it is a people’s movement. We are again moving toward government by the people…for the people. THEY need to get out of the way.

Let's Get This Out-of-the-Way

Let’s review the arguments against President Obama and DISMISS THEM!

1. He has no White House experience.

This is true, Obama does not have a father, spouse, or sibling who was president, so it's probably safe to say he hasn't spent a lot of time at the White House. There are probably foreign nationals and lobbyists who have spent more time at the White House than Obama.

2. He has no presidential campaign experience.

Also true. Obama has not squandered the hopes and dreams of millions of voters by running an ineffective campaign and losing to a candidate that should have been easily beaten. (TWICE!)

3. He has not planned this, he is just 'seizing the moment.'

Yes he is! This is what great American leaders do. (Think Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, King)

4. He has a 'political machine' behind him.

True again. However, the people pushing Obama to the forefront are not the political operatives and pundits we've seen for years. His 'machine' consists of vast numbers of people, many on the Internet, who have not given up on America and see him as the best of the candidates for president.

5. We don't know much about him.

Maybe. However, his record is there if we take the time to look at it. He's written books and spilled his guts about his background. He came out against the war in the beginning, and not when it was politically beneficial to do so. He graduated from Harvard Law School, and again I don't think he had a father, or spouse, or sibling paving the way for him. He's a great orator who inspires people. (we'll never forget THE SPEECH at the last Democratic convention.) He was a community organizer in tough Chicago neighborhoods. If you need more...TAKE the TIME to listen, and review his policies on this site.

One more thing....how much did we 'really' know about our last two presidents?

"It's the family...Smart People"

I am pyched about THIS campaign's ability to meet its goals and get so many people like me...people who have never felt involved with the political process in America....on board and spreading the word.

As a 'soccer mom' I can say that Obama best embodies the values and policies that I deem important for myself, my husband, and my children.

I have spoken with my church members, and even my Republican friends, and we all agree Obama best represents FAMILY VALUES.

Having a community focused on taking care of our children is important...but, the bottom line is...it doesn't take a village...IT TAKES A PARENT!

Today, parents and families are under assault from policies (and a culture) that leave us with too many 'things', too much debt, and little time to raise our children properly and spend time with our spouses. And then there are the worries...how to pay the mortgage, rising heathcare costs, the media messages being forced on our kids, childcare and tuition costs, will we have enough for retirement, what will hapen to our parents and elderly loved ones, will our kids have to go to war...the list goes on.

For this presidential election the theme is not "It's the economy, stupid."

It is: "IT'S THE FAMILY, SMART PEOPLE!"

I pray the smart people of this campaign focus on this. Obama IS the FAMILY candidate. Thank God we have somebody who can represent us!

Time to Put on the Armor

6/29 UPDATE -- Glad to see changes on website (see below). Still need Obama story as main focus.

This is a battle cry to Obama supporters everywhere – DON’T LET THIS CAMPAIGN FIZZLE OUT!

I believe the Clinton camp is going in for the kill against a perceived slippage in the enthusiasm shown for Obama. The goal, of course, is to cement the lead and make Obama a non-issue by the start of 2008.

WE CAN’T LET THIS HAPPEN!

Hopefully, the Obama campaign masterminds will come up with something more exciting than policy speeches and ads to invigorate this campaign. But, we—the grassroots supporters at the heart of this campaign—can do more also.

First, we have to counter the image being painted of Obama supporters as not being working-class people. In a recent editorial by Noam Scheiber of the New Republic, Obama supporters are painted as: “highly educated achievers,” “charter-school entrepreneurs as opposed to the public-school teachers;” and, “management consultants rather than the government lawyers.” Excuse my language, but as my kids would say: “this is CRAP!”

Barack Obama embodies the hopes and dreams of working-class Americans more so than any other candidate. He has worked and lived in working-class communities—not because he was planning on running for president someday, but because he was “called” to do so.

Second, we know a major theme of Obama opponents will be “the experience thing.” This was also the point in the Scheiber article that highlights Clinton’s “experience.” Again, as supporters of Obama, we see the difference between a calculated run for the presidency, and a heartfelt “answer to the call” of the American people.

Third, and most important, we have to invigorate this campaign if we are to have any hope of invigorating America. What does this mean? Well, take a look at the homepage of this website. I am 51 years old and I find it boring. I asked my 17 year old son, who will be voting for the first time next year, to take a look at the homepage, and he too found it lacking. “Where’s Obama talking to me,” was his first comment. “Why isn’t Obama TV front and center, I don’t care what others are saying. And, where’s the interactivity!”

Now granted, this is a guy who spends too many hours playing Halo and World of Warcraft, but he will be voting next year!

I also took a look at the site my 8 year old daughter visits a lot – Disney’s Hannah Montana website. I know this market is a long way from being ready to vote, but the Disney folks know how to do a website. On the homepage, there’s Hannah smiling and plenty of interactivity around her.

Finally, I asked my Computer Programmer, (working-class I might add) husband to take a look at the homepage and give me his opinion. I got an earful, which I’ll summarize:

1.The focus should be on Obama, not his supporters.

2.My husband found it difficult to focus on any one thing on the page. He also thinks Barack TV should be front and center, and the message of “taking back America” should be highlighted more (or perhaps the theme) of the page;

3.He found the colors (although patriotic) to be washed out. He says the overall emotion you feel after the page has been up for awhile is sadness. He suggests (and I AGREE) more vibrancy.

He had more to say, but I’ll stop here because I don’t want to bash the hardworking people who put the site together (probably for little or no income.)

Finally, I have to guess there are those who believe they lend legitimacy to Obama’s seriousness by not being too flashy or new media. To them I say—if we wanted boring and conservative there are plenty of other presidential candidates for us to support.

I have to believe some of the most creative minds, and best communicators, in the country are supporting Obama. Not all of them…but, enough to make a difference. The Hillary Soprano’s take-off was GOOD! I’m not sure of the message it sent, however, it served its purpose of generating buzz.

WE have a buzz worthy candidate with a buzz worthy message! Let’s get it out! I’m calling forth all communicators to start getting letters, articles, speeches, and editorials out on Obama, and why he is our HOPE.

I guess there is a school of thought that says wait until things heat up…but by then it might be too late. If we’re going to do this—elect this worthy man as our next president—let’s do it right!

Grab the reins of public discussion and don’t let go. Shake things up. Be different. Shock people. Have the audacity to believe the American people can keep up with new media, new campaign techniques, new candidates, and new ideas. Don’t waste this man’s talent and promise!

It’s time to put on the armor.

Am I alone in this? Are there others who feel as I do? Will anyone even see and pay attention to this blog?

Don’t know….but, I will keep going anyway in support of Barack Obama. My armor is on.

Why Now?

Okay...so I've never gotten involved in anyone's campaign before. Yes, I believe that one person can make a difference, and I do try to vote in every election (at least the important ones :) However, I never felt the need to extend myself on someone's behalf in a campaign. I know LOT'S of people who feel this way....and perhaps that is why we are not happy with the way the country is being led. We are not picking our leaders and helping them get elected. Instead, we are just voting on the lesser of 2, 3, or 4 evils. "You get what you pay for!"

This guy Obama is the real deal. I don't need a poll, the media, or another politicain to tell me this. He offers hope, intelligence, and most importantly--common sense! He is someone I can respect, and this is more important to me than someone I seem to agree with in all areas.

As a working wife and mother, I don't have a lot of time and I don't have a lot of money...but I have a lot of friends and acquaintances who feel as I do. I'm going to call them out of their 'comfort zones' and see what we can do to get this guy elected.
