National Obama People's Ball - sign up to celebrate!

If you can't (or don't want to) go into Washington, DC (where it will be crowded) to celebrate the inauguration, check out the National Obama People's Ball & sign up to celebrate! We worked hard to get him elected and we deserve to celebrate. DC will likely be wet and cold, so celebrate locally and using the guidelines and resources of the National Obama People's Ball will help you have a great party, follow the lead of Barack Obama by benefitting the community, and get the word out.

DROWNING IN A FLOOD OF MISINFORMATION REGARDING ELECTION 2008?

(This is a good post that was sent to me. If you're looking for my original statement, it has fallen to another page at the beginning of my blog posts here - check for a link at the bottom of this page. If you're looking for photos from the Walk4Change, see http://www.diversity4obama.org/ )

THE FACTS:

WILL OBAMA RAISE YOUR TAXES?

-- The Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan.
According to the Washington based "Tax Policy Center"

-- Under the Obama plan, middle class families will see their taxes cut - and no family making less than $250,000
will see their taxes increase. http://www.Obama.com

-- Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan - a lifelong Republican and longtime friend of Sen. John McCain - said the country can not afford $3.3 trillion of tax cuts proposed by McCain without corresponding spending reductions. Bloombergreports.com

WHAT HAS OBAMA DONE TO SUPPORT WOMEN'S ISSUES?

-- Obama has received a voting record of 100% from NARAL Pro Choice America

-- Obama has advocated for women by actively supporting each of the following issues and legislation that McCain has routinely voted against:
- Roe v. Wade - Equal Pay for Equal Work - Women's Health Initiatives - Stricter Domestic Violence Laws - Supplemental Childcare Funds

WHO WILL IMPROVE THE STATE OF OUR ECONOMY?

"I have a great belief that the fundamentals of our economy are very strong."
John McCain, September 15, 2008

As of September 16, 2008:
-- Unemployment rate is 5-1/2% -- 49,000 jobs were lost last month

-- 1,000,000 homes are in foreclosure -- The U.S. owes more than nine trillion dollars in debt

CNN, September 16, 2008

-- Republican Sen. Phil Gramm, a member of the Senate Budget Committee from 1989-2003, is likely to be Treasury Secretary in a McCain administration. Gramm is the author of the laws deregulating banking.

-- Data show average annual growth of real gross national product of 1.64 percent per capita under Republican presidents versus 2.78 percent under Democrats since the 1940's. That 1.14 point difference, if maintained for eight years, would yield 9.33 percent more income per person, which is a lot more than almost anyone can expect from a tax cut. New York Times, August 30,2008

HOW WILL CHANGES IN THE SUPREME COURT AFFECT AMERICANS?

During the next four years, there is the potential for appointing three new Supreme Court Justices.

-- McCain says he would put conservatives on Supreme Court Washington Post, May 7, 2008

-- John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned. John McCain.com

-- The Court's upcoming cases touch on the issues of abortion, affirmative action and air pollution, in addition to immigration and patent law. Morning Edition, NPR, October 2, 2008

WHICH CANDIDATE PROVIDES THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH PLAN?

"The Obama health plan outperforms the McCain plan in coverage and efficiency."
The Urban Institute/Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center, May 23, 2008

McCAIN'S VIEW ON THE SURGE AND U.S. VICTORY IN IRAQ?

The outgoing commander of U.S. Troops, Gen. David Petraeus, said that recent security gains were "not irreversible" and that the U.S. still faced a "long struggle." Petraeus said that he would never declare victory there. "This is not the sort of struggle where you take a hill, plant the flag and go home to a victory parade... it's not war with a simple slogan."
BBC, September 11, 2008

CONFIRMED AMERICAN DEATHS:* 4,094
CONFIRMED AMERICAN CASUALTIES:* 30,182
*as of Sept. 16, 2008

COST OF WAR: $ 341.4 million per day

WILL OBAMA PROTECT ISRAEL?

-- A letter decrying criticism of claims that Obama is not a supporter of Jewish causes has been signed by: Top executives of the American Jewish Committee, the Reform movement, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Congress, the National Council of Jewish Women, the Phoenix Jewish News, the Orthodox Union, the Jewish Council of Public Affairs, the United Jewish Communities and the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Obama has been endorsed by the Jewish Council for Education and Research.
Phoenix Jewish News, January 25, 2008

WHICH CANDIDATE IS MOST LIKELY TO BRING ABOUT TRUE CHANGE IN WASHINGTON?

McCain has been in D.C. since 1982, and has voted with Bush 90% of the time.
Washington Post, September 16, 2008

Obama was the Senate's point person on ethics reform, and sponsored or co-sponsored the bills that made up what the Washington Post called "the strongest ethics legislation to emerge from Congress yet."
All legislative actions can be verified on The Library of Congress website: http://thomas.loc.gov/

McCAIN REPEATEDLY STATES THAT OBAMA OPPOSES OFF-SHORE DRILLING AND NUCLEAR POWER.

"I still don't believe that (off-shore drilling) is a particularly meaningful short-term or long-term solution...I am willing to consider it if it's necessary to actually pass a comprehensive plan...In addition, we'll find safer ways to use nuclear power and store nuclear waste. And we'll invest in the technology that will allow us to use more coal, America's most abundant energy source, with the goal of creating five 'first-of-a-kind' coal-fired demonstration plants with carbon capture and sequestration."
http://www.BarackObama.com

WHERE DO THE VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES STAND ON GLOBAL WARMING?

-- Gov.
Singable songs

I'm looking for singable songs that can be used while we're walking in DC for the Walk for Change (see diversity4obama.org ). I know there's been a lot of songs written about Obama and for the Obama campaign, but most seem heavy in instrumentation and not especially easy for a large crowd who are walking together. Songs like the past protest songs feel right, but most don't have the words to express what we're trying to express here. I may use some of them any way, but I'm looking for suggestions. And please spread the word both about the need for songs & about the Walk4Change in DC on Sept. 13. Thanks!

Obama Walk4Change in DC 2008

Join us on Sept. 13, 2008 in DC. We now have state coordinators to help people plan their trip to DC & inform you about the meeting places and such. Sign up here: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/wrbz

I'm a volunteer who hopes to lead singing during the walk. We're setting up T-shirt purchases to wear one that looks like others, though it's optional, I believe. Purchasing T-shirts will have to be made online as we're not allowed to sell things during the walk.

Please help spread the word!

Blogging suggestions

Do you wish you could do more, like me? I've been trying to spread the word via the
internet. I was sent a great video and an article about it, so I wrote about it in my blog as
if it wasn't about Obama, because the people in states who haven't voted yet,
many are undecided, so I entitled it by part of the title of the video "Obama
vs. Clinton" and maybe more of those undecideds will look at it. In my previous
post about the campaign, an undecided from NC replied (I'm assuming others read
& didn't reply).

So they are out there searching. If you have a blog other than on Obama's site
and, especially if you don't have the time to go to other states, special events, or
meetings, you might want to post something like this in your blog (feel free to copy):
http://uu-mom.livejournal.com/59693.html

My previous post with another video which got the response is here:
http://uu-mom.livejournal.com/59315.html

Just a suggestion. I hope you're all doing what you can.

- Joyce

Need ride to poll on Tues.? Spread the word.

I'd like help people get to the polls to vote. Please spread the word in your community or to your email addresses of people in southern Prince George's County. Tell them: If you're registered to vote & going to a polling place in southern Prince George's Co., please let Joyce Dowling know if you need a ride. She's even willing to watch a child while you vote if needed (she's a fingerprinted substitute teacher trained in early childhood development). You can call her at 301-782-9922.

Please spread the word.

This is not an official Obama campaign event. I will drive Republicans or anyone, but it happens that my car is covered with Obama stickers.

Officially, the campaign wants us to do things that I don't feel up to doing, but I hope you can help:

SATURDAY Feb. 9 Canvassing opportunities: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/mdhome

in Suitland: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4r7r2

in College Park: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4r59c

in Lanham: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4r7rs

in Largo: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4r74p

in Greenbelt: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4r7ry

Phonebanking this weekend: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/phonebankmap

  and Sat. in Lanham: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/4rfxk

Mon. at College Park rally: http://my.barackobama.com/collegepark

And, of course, at the polls on Tues.: check the Prince George's groups at my.barackobama.com or call Ryan Cooper 843.601.6087.

ONE LAST ADDITION:

I was notified today that Academy-Award nominated actress Alfre Woodard will be at the law of office of Karen Pope-Onwukwe tomorrow to get a select group of women energized about supporting Barack Obama.

Date: Sat., Feb. 9, 2008
Time: 4:45 pm to 6:00pm
Place: Law Office of Karen Pope Onwukwe
         9801 Greenbelt Rd., Suite 103B
         Lanham, MD 20706
         301-927-3145

Thanks for passing this message along.

I've also ordered a yard sign.

My health and busy life doesn't allow me to attend other Obama events or make phone calls, but go to the Events link and help out if you can or find other ways to help. Of course, he also needs funds, too.

"Obama's Superb Speech Could Catapult His Bid"

Yepsen: Obama's Superb Speech Could Catapult His Bid from ABC News. "His oratory was moving, and he successfully contrasted himself with the others — especially Clinton — without being snide or nasty about it.

"That was an important thing for him to do. Historically, the Iowa party's "JJ" dinner is a landmark event in Democratic presidential caucus campaigns. All the key party activists, donors and players are present. This year, about 9,000 of them showed up."

I hope it's true. I don't understand this level of politics, but I think Obama really has what it takes. He's been walking the talk by not taking funds from PACs or lobbyists and turning those funds and funds that were raised inappropriately back. If he doesn't make it, I would suspect political favors by Clinton and money as being the reasons (since she takes funds from PACs and lobbyists and also engages in deceptive fundraising). Wouldn't it be marvelous if we could change the way politics is done in this country?!

Obama rally was terrific!

I saw a lot of people reach to shake Barack's hand, but to me hand-shaking is a little over-rated, having had that experience. To me, the honor to volunteer to help with the campaign is much more rewarding (I was an "usher" giving instructions to people approaching the metal detectors). I do, however, appreciate those VIPs who paid $1,000 or more for a ticket and got to see him in a private reception, maybe talking to him one-on-one. The campaign could use that money, too, since, unfortunately U.S. campaigns are more about who can raise money than who has the best ideas and skills to improve our country.

I'll post a link to my photos later and if I find more stories about the event, but here are some stories, photos & videos I've found so far:

Washington Post story & video (advertisement comes first): Obama Tells Md. Voters, 'We Need Something New' : Rally in Prince George's Is 1st Campaign Stop in State...

Sen. Barack Obama told thousands gathered...

also in their blog Prince George's Turns Out for Obama (my pop-up blocker caught an ad and the first video is unrelated if you see 2): Prince George's Turns Out for Obama

and

Pastors Were Among Obama Faithful

Reporter's Notebook includes 2 photos

I was also not expecting to see Obama in an article I was reading about New Orleans: "He [John Edwards], Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama are among those touting their own plans for Gulf Coast recovery. Obama's in particular is praiseworthy: It covers everything from levee reconstruction to crimefighting to restoration of coastal wetlands, and takes a nuts-and-bolts approach devoid of cheap political gestures." link

In Bowie Blade: "Lucky Pee Gee County students were able to attend U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign rally in Largo yesterday free of cost. Auntie understands that after talks between student leaders, including county school board student member Haywood Perry III, and Obama campaign officials, all students at public and private Pee Gee schools were allowed to forgo the $15 student cover charge to listen to Obama exercise his unique brand of political stumping at Pee Gee Community College in Largo. Now, wasn't that nice? Auntie wiped away a tear." Aunt Agatha on Politics: Council candidate hiring outsiders to go ...

"Pee Gee"?! I thought the major benefit of acronyms was that they were just the initials. The county government tried to get rid of that terminology because they thought it was disrespectful. I seem to hear it all the time now, especially from younger people. Oh, well... here's more:

Obama Raises Cash in Prince George's County from WJLA (1 photo)

Is he 'preaching to the choir?' from Diamondback Online (UofMd - 1 photo)

Candidate Obama plays to young crowd from the Baltimore Sun (1 photo)

Obama-rama in PG County Wednesday Southern Maryland Online

Obama Campaigns in Maryland AP (6 photos)

Obama Raises Cash in Affluent Black Washington Suburb Fox [Hmm, notice who's making this about race - not that others didn't mention it, but there are some who only notice the headline.]

Anyone know how much he raised last night?
RIverdale Park May 30

Prince Georgians,

Interested in attending an organizational meeting in Riverdale Park on May 30 7 PM? Let me know and I'll fill you in.

This is an excellent flier:

Top 10 Reasons to Vote for Barack Obama

1. Barack Obama has personal experience with poverty and the growing income gap, having grown up abroad in Indonesia and working as a community organizer in the south side of Chicago.

2. After graduating Harvard Law, Magna Cum Laude and president of the Harvard Law Review, Obama could have become a wealthy corporate or trial lawyer but returned to Chicago to practice civil rights law.

3. He also taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago, so he knows how our government is supposed to work.

4. He has the most experience as an elected official and legislator with over 10 years in state and federal public service. He is the only top Democratic candidate who understands both state and federal government as an elected legislator.

5. He opposed the Iraq war before it started and has a specific plan for redeploying all combat troops by March 31, 2008.

6. He has received an A+ score from the Genocide Intervention Network for being a "champion" and taking crucial action to end the genocide in Darfur, co-sponsoring and voting for all significant Darfur legislation.

7. Barack Obama is committed to universal health care by the end of his first term.

8. He has sponsored, co-sponsored and advocated for significant and realistic legislation to end global warming by capturing and safely disposing carbon dioxide, raising vehicle fuel economy standards and replacing petroleum with home-grown biofuels like cellulosic ethanol.

9. He has the broadest base of supporters, has not accepted PAC money and is the least compromised by big money special interests.

10. Barack Obama has the intellect, natural talent and charisma to communicate effectively to the entire world, bring people together, change the status quo and move our country forward.

If you want to see the reasons I gave, see my previous message. If you'd like a PDF of this or a link to the original page which has photos on it, it is with PDFs for printing at the bottom of the page: Link
Sharing to help the community & world

Why I support Barack Obama: Sensible plan to pull out of war. Not accepting lobbiest funds. Has the qualities of a winner & president we can be proud of. Promotes open government. Good education, energy, and family & communities policies. Supports election reform. Pro-faith & "universal language" to keep specific religion out of government. We need a president who is really for the people - not just his buddies or his kind, but all the people. Obama has the qualities to be that president.

Here are some other sites you can see:

My personal home page Link - My family, Present employment, Volunteer projects, Past employment, My writings, Other info

My personal blog Link UU Mom Portal to Active Life

Creating a Jubilee County: Prince George's Co., MD Link - News and announcement – feel free to comment

Race Matters in Prince George's Co., MD & the USA Link - open dialogue on racial issues

Prince Georgians Care Link - About Prince George’s Co., resources, non-profits, interfaith resources, civic associations, jobs, forums, issue links, meeting notes, county bloggers

Contribute to the campaign here.
