We have a lot of calls to make and could use your help recruiting more volunteers willing to help out in battleground states and help us here at home. News Flash: Camp Obama and Voter Registration Success!

This weekend's Camp Obama resulted in a large group of newly trained volunteers with over half committed to making out-of-state trips to help in Battleground States. Go get those Electoral Votes! And, we not only reached but surpassed our goal of 1000 New Voters in Bexar Co!!! This does not include the HUGE number of mail-in ballots that we have distributed (4000 +).

Camp Obama is coming back to San Antonio on September 27th.

Missed This Past Camp Obama? Don't fret! The Campaign for Change is looking for volunteers willing to travel to Colorado, New Mexico, and Florida where the race is especially close and may be decided by a few thousand or possibly even a few hundred votes. If you're up to the challenge, join other volunteers who are "Fired Up and Ready to Go" as you learn the skills necessary to effectively campaign at home and in the communities where we need your help the most! alamObama Volunteer Meeting: Our normal meeting date has changed to Wednesday, Feb 13th

at 6:30 pm to avoid a conflict with Valentine's Day ;-)

We will be meeting at our office (301 Broadway Suite 106) and our agenda will

include an important Precinct Captain/Delegate Selection training session.

note: This training session will be repeated before the March 4th Primary.

Feet on the Street: Hurrah! Due to many amazing volunteers, we are already delivering over 6,000

Obama flyers with Voting information across Bexar County. Without a doubt, this

is the most effective way to spread Obama's message of UNITY!

The next wave of canvassing will begin as soon as our new literature arrives; so,

get your walking shoes warmed-up.

Call Center: Believe it or not, we will make call number 12,001 very soon. So far, we

have encouraged voters in: Iowa, Nevada, South Carolina, California,

Minnesota and Massachusetts. Today, we began calls to students in

Maine!

Our Bexar County Get-Out-The-Vote calls will begin very soon;

so, all this "practice" should come in handy.

OBAMA FOR AMERICA STAFFERS: A large group of OFA staffers are headed to Texas and

will join our grassroots' effort to secure the Democratic nomination for

Please join other San Antonio area Obama supporters as we remember Martin Luther King, Jr on the 40th year observance of Dr. King's death on April 4, 1968 and the 21st anniversary of the local Martin Luther King. Jr., march.

The theme of this year's MLK March is: March from the Dream to Reality which will be reflected in our alamObama group with our custom Keeping the Dream Alive banners and signs.

Important Details:

Meet-Up Location- East side Boys and Girls Club at 3500 MLK Drive(alamObama volunteers will direct you to our line up position in the parade).

Meet-Up Time- 9:00 am (The MLK March begins at 10 am and the traffic is awful!)

Dress- It is likely to be cold & rainy; so, please dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes.

“Keeping the Dream Alive” signs (10” x12” vinyl signs to be pinned on the front of each volunteer.)-

All Obama supporters are encouraged to wear one of our custom signs in order to identify our group

during the march and for the Media.

These custom signs will be available at our alamObama office beginning Wednesday, Jan 16 and a

donation of $3 would be appreciated to cover our costs :-) Office Location = 301 Broadway

Park and Ride, shuttle service available for MLK March

Posted: 1/11/2008

VIA Metropolitan Transit will operate special event park and ride service and shuttle service for the Martin Luther King, Jr. March on Monday, January 21.

Park and ride service to the march will be offered from the Crossroads Park and Ride, the Randolph Boulevard Park and Ride, the Alamodome (parking lot C), and St. Philip’s College (parking lot 2 at Wyoming Street and Mittman Street).

Buses will begin taking passengers to the march at 8:00 a.m. and will run continuously until 4:15 p.m.Before the march begins at 10:00 a.m., the drop-off point for all the park and ride locations will be on Bookertee Drive at Martin Luther King Drive. After the march begins, buses will drop off passengers at Pittman Sullivan Park. The pick-up location for return service will be at the intersection of Nevada Street and Palmetto Street.

The round trip fare will be$1.50 for adults and $1.00 for children ages 5-11. The $1.00 fare will also be available for senior citizens 62 years and older, Medicare recipients, persons with disabilities, and students with a valid VIA ID. VIAtrans customers and children ages 4 and under ride free. No one-way fares will be offered, and VIA’s monthly Big Passes are not valid for special event service.

VIA will also offer shuttle bus service for the march. This shuttle will run every 30 minutes and will ferry passengers from Pittman Sullivan Park to the beginning of the march route on Bookertee Drive at Martin Luther King Drive. The one-way fare for the shuttle is $1.00.

Obama Smear Email

So I got the email today. You know the one. The one where Barack is trying to take over the United States with a secret Muslim agenda? From someone I know no less. (That part was heart breaking.)

I wrote this response and hit reply ALL. Any suggestions for what to change the next time it comes around?

I just wanted to make sure that you knew that this email about Barack Obama has been reported FALSE.

PBS & ABC news, along with many other media outlets have reported on this many times in the last few weeks.

Barack Obama has been a member of the United Church of Christ in Chicago for years, and was taught by his Grandfather to place his arms respectfully by his sides during the National Anthem (where the picture was actually taken). He did, in fact, live overseas before the age of 10 but never harbored any plans of becoming a Mulsim.

2 staffers in the Clinton campaign were recently fired for spreading this exact email, but it continues to circulate. I'm really glad though that there are candidates on BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE that aren't contributing to these type of smear/fear campaigns.

alamObama to Iowa Blog Wrap Up-

Many of you know that Judy, June, Steve & I spent the last week knocking on doors in Rockwell City, Iowa on behalf of Barack Obama. And as I'm sure all of you know, the hard work in the below freezing temps paid off. At the Rockwell City Democratic Caucus, Barack Obama had 36 people stand (or "vote") for him while John Edwards had 34 and Hillary Clinton had 26 supporters; Richardson rounded out the mix with 16 supporters. People who had never been politically involved before stepped up in Rockwell City to become delegates. I was so proud to see the community walk in and make their voices heard and their votes count.

Once the caucus was finished we hopped in the car and headed to Des Moines to hear Barack's Speech. Phone calls were coming in from all of our friends and family to tell us what was happening on TV. Thanks to everyone who emailed me and called with caucus night updates!!

We had a safe but hectic 2 hour drive that included the Iowa State Police and a little bit of misdirection, but we walked into the Hyvee Center just as Barack was wrapping up his address. The energy in the building was amazing. We managed to find a few old friends from previous Obama events, mainly staffers from Barack's Advance team, and a fellow TOVL (Texas Obama Volunteer Leaders) member from Houston, Maria Isabelle. We topped the night off with a few great conversations with volunteers, and political tourists from all over the U.S.

I am so excited and proud to have helped in this historic step forward for our country!!!

June and I left San Antonio this morning at about 8am. We made it to Emporia Kansas. We'll continue on to Des Moines in the morning. We just found out that Barack will be near June's house on the 31st also, so that should be fun. He's speaking at a high school in Jefferson City.

It was a smooth drive we saw snow, but not any on the road. YAY!

5:41 PM - "Emporia to Rockwell City!"

So we finally made it safely to Iowa. I was a little worried there for a minute cause when I showed up at June's house, she invited me in and her pup nipped my leg. I was fine and it was really no big deal but it got me a little worried about the direction the trip was headed. However, everything after that has been smooth sailing. We're safe and there is snow outside. It's pretty cold, but nothing we haven't seen before. June's house is great and if it were summer I'd totally be whinning for you to get me one of my own!

We already got our assignments: knocking on doors here in RC then calling to tell people that Michelle Obama is going to be in Pocahontas, Iowa on Saturday. I can't believe they actually named a town Pocahontas. It makes me smile everytime I say it. We're going to get to go see Michelle speak on Saturday night. Then on Monday we're going to see Barack in Jefferson Iowa. I am so excited that it's all free!! Iowans get all the perks!! John Edwards is coming through here in a few days also but, June says we'll skip that one.

10:34 PM - On the Ground Day One

Hurray!! Our first day in Rockwell City was a great experience. We got our walklists and headed out early. We stopped by the county courthouse around the block and took a few pictures while getting the details about caucus night.

By the end of the day we had gotten through the majority of the Barack Supporters here in town. June's familiarity with the community has been so valuable. We decided to head to dinner at the local Pizza Ranch. If was a great WARM break after a long day, and finally, as a reward for all our hard work the coolest thing happened. As we were getting ready to walk out I heard an employee telling his boss that he had just seen Barack Obama and had his book signed. My ears perked up and I decided to head over to say hi. It turns out the employee, Logan, is indeed a big Obama supporter and will infact be caucusing for him on January 3. We were soooo excited! What a great payoff for a cold day's work.

After that we headed home all smiles and began making calls to people in the area about Michelle's visit to Pocahontas. =:0) The calling went well, now we're just preparing lists to send back to Katie filled with the results of our walking and calling.

I can't wait until Steve and Judy arrive. Rockwell City is small but more importantly friendly. Tomorrow we head into Lake City to knock on more doors and try to identify the Obama supporters there. Wish us luck!!

1. We need volunteers to make phone calls to students at the University of Iowa Wednesday, Dec 19 and Thursday, Dec 20 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the alamObama office (301 Broadway Suite 106...free parking in the lot attached to office. The office door is on 3rd Street across from St. Mark's Episcopal Church parking lot.) We will be making phone calls to invite these students to caucus for Obama.
note: Students are likely to be the secret weapon of the Iowa Caucus. (Please bring your cells phones & chargers just in case AT & T still hasn't found our office.)

2. MLK March on Monday, Jan 21- We have a goal of 200 Obama marchers and need help with recruitment. Are you signed up? This is a KEY Visibility event because it is scheduled between the Nevada Caucus on Jan 19 and the South Carolina Primary on Jan 26.

I know that the campaign is going to set up a way to call Texas supporters just like you may have seen them do for other states. So far there are 400 people signed up to attend the event, but the goal is 5,000. We need volunteers to call and spread the word that Barack is coming.

Barack the Valley

We're finally on our feet and stable here in San Antonio. Still, everytime someone asks me what to do about getting Barack's message into the Hispanic Community, all I can think is that if we aren't talking to our own communities, no one will.

So this is my attempt. I know many of us know people who think of Hillary as an extension of Bill, (some of my own family included).I just don't think that election by association is good enough. I think it's so important, to make sure that everyone knows there is more than one candidate in this race... that they have a choice.

I'd like to come down and meet some Barack supporters soon, but in the meantime, those of you already in the Valley should meet at a favorite restaurant or bookstore. Post an event here at mybarack.com, and see who shows up. Talking with fellow supporters is really helpful when it comes time to talk to people who are undecided about a candidate.

With as little as 10 people in a small parade the visibility earned is great, not to mention the good that could come of phone banking, a small canvass or a voter registration event.

Hello Everyone,

Senator Obama needs our help! We need to 'turn the page' on Iraq. Five years ago, Barack Obama stood up in Chicago and spoke out against invading Iraq.

"What I am opposed to is a dumb war," said Obama on October 2, 2002. " What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other armchair, weekend warriors in this administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne."

We need alamObama and San Antonio for Barack volunteers to make a road-trip to the Floresville Peanut Festival Parade where we will help "Turn the Page" in Iraq by handing out special literature and canvassing our neighbors to the southeast about why it's time to bring our sons, daughters, family and friends home, and how Senator Obama plans to accomplish this.

"There is no military solution in Iraq, and there never was. The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq's leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops. Not in six months or one year -- now."

On a more personal note: I have been surprised at how steady the grassroots movement is growing here in SA. I have met people from all over the county and am loving the work I've been doing so far. I have been able to take a role as a Volunteer Organizer and have been busy working with our Events and Visibility Organizers all month. I have talked to a few people about helping to start up a group in the valley, where I'm orginally from, but right now alamObama is getting most of my attention. Statewide coordination has been working well too, and so far the idea of the larger cities sharing ideas and strategy has worked out well.

The Obama For America National Field Director was on our Texas Obama Volunteer Leaders call and gave us so much to talk about. Barack has a high profile New York Rally coming up and after hearing about it first hand, I've decided I'm going to go ahead and make a few more calls into NY to raise awareness. I can do it from home through mybarackobama.com so it's really not a problem.

Hello and I sure Hope you have your track shoes on....

The Obama campaign conference call tonight (May 13) was amazing!
And, I was very proud to let them know that the AlamObama group was a "GO!" for the
June 9 "Walk for Change."

Now, I will attempt to outline the plans we made at our May 10th meeting for our "Walk for Change" including information that the national campaign provided tonight. (If anyone has any additions/corrections, please let me know!):

1.LOCATION- Randy's Ballroom parking lot 1534 Bandera Road 78228

2.DATE/TIME- Saturday, June 9 (9 am arrival/pick-up materials; 9:30 briefing; 10 leave to deliver Obama materials, plus our own AlamObama cards!)

3.GOAL- 200 volunteers to deliver Obama literature to 50 homes each...This should take about 3 hours counting driving time.

4.COMMITTEES REQUIRED-(We could always use additional volunteers for these tasks!)

a.MATERIALS (Bob Scott/Joe Swafford)...The national campaign has committed to providing an Obama brochure with English & Spanish versions. Once these arrive, we will need to prepare them for volunteers to deliver.
The national campaign was also supportive of individual Obama groups handing out voter registration cards during the "Walk for Change." It is very easy to use mail-in voter registration cards and we will have these available on June 9.

b.ALAMOBAMA T-SHIRTS (Jen Romo)...We were given a lead on inexpensive Royal Blue t-shirts and will have them available for volunteers ($5 each) on June 9. Jen is making iron-on AlamObama patches and may ask for help in getting these prepared...

c.PRECINCT TARGETING (Judy Hall)... Precinct maps that will direct volunteers to areas with a history of high voter turn-out will be required for this event. The national campaign's strategy for targeting will be followed.

d.SET-UP ON JUNE 9 (Ron Hedger/Fred Tawill...hopefully)...We will need to have a few helpers to unload materials and distribute them to volunteers. These folks should arrive around 8 am in order to have everything ready for a 9 am start.

e.PRESS (to be announced)...The national campaign will be handling press for the really large events; but would like us to get coverage if possible.

f.VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT (Colt Ables/Ron Hedger)...This is the MOST important task of all and really requires each of us to do our best to bring 10 friends/relatives/neighbors to meet our goal of 200 volunteers.
In addition, Colt and Ron will be calling people who have already contacted the campaign to participate in the "Walk for Change" or have an interest in helping with the campaign.
(I will provide Colt, Ron and anyone else who would like to make calls with this contact information as soon as it is available from the national campaign.)

And, finally, PLEASE let me know if you plan to participate in the "Walk for Change." The national campaign is asking for hard numbers asap.

Thursday May 10 @ 6:30 San Antonio Obama Supporters are meeting at Taste of China on I-10 & Wurzbach.

Texans for Obama has rolled out an online phone banking feature that can be used from your own home!!

The national Walk for Change campaign has been announced and we'll be organizing for that also.

Now is the time to get in and start contributing to a cause that we all care deeply about.

AlamObama Meeting Notes

BRIEF NOTES FROM A SUCCESSFUL AlamObama MEETING:

1.All 16 present introduced themselves and commented on Barack Obama's exciting campaign to win the Democratic Nomination for President. O-Bam-A 08!

2.Report from Jen Romo on Statewide Obama Networking Conference Call-
Our AlamObama group is on the radar and will continue to participate in future calls/planning.

3.Report from Sam Soto about Cesar Chavez (March 31)-
AlamObama group was small; but VERY well received. Literature provided by Carol Aguero.

4.Report/Handouts about MoveOn's Virtual Town Hall meeting by Madeleine Dewar:
Obama was voted the top choice to lead our country out of Iraq (28%) with John Edwards a close second (25%). And, our AlamObama group agreed!

5.Group discussed how to "Grow" our numbers and establish Visibility in the SA area-
a). Keep our eyes open for future public events to attend & handout literature (Cinco de Mayo; July 4th; etc)
b).Establish a Group Identity by wearing an AlamObama t-shirt. It was decided that each volunteer would purchase their own Royal Blue t-shirt and Jen Romo would make customized AlamObama
Iron-On Patches to bring to our next meeting (Jen graciously made a variety of Obama Iron-On Patches available at the meeting.)
c).Those present were provided with AlamObama business cards to be used to recruit new volunteers.

6.Group discussed need to maintain communication throughout the Obama campaign-
a).Jen Romo announced that our website (www.alamobama08.com) was up and she would check for any possible virus problems.
b).Judy Hall will send periodic emails to AlamObama volunteers about upcoming events, meeting notes, etc.

7.Judy Hall asked the group to consider the possibility of organizing local training sessions for Obama volunteers. These training sessions would focus on Get-Out-The-Vote techniques.

8.Judy Hall reported on the possibility of a Primary Debate Viewing event. Plans for this type of event will depend on the schedule for Primary Debates which has not been established at this time.

San Antonio/Alamobama Meeting April 12

Our next meeting has been scheduled for the 2nd Thursday in April. That's April 12 @ 6:30pm. We'll be meeting at Taste of China on I-10 and Wurzbach. I know that not all of us will be able to make it, but PLEASE make an effort. There will be traffic, and it is on a weeknight, but a once a month sacrifice is the least we can do to organize. It's worth it!!We have 22 people signed up so far, but there is more than enough room and food, and we can use all the help we can get. Hi everyone!! We're trucking along and getting closer to the end of March. Our next meeting has been scheduled for the 2nd Thursday in April. That's April 12 @ 6:30pm. This is a list, an update if you will, about things people have emailed me about recently.

"We" own www.alamobama08.com

We have the web hosting and I've spoken to someone in our group who is mocking up a page for us. We are waiting on Thomas's Alamobama design that combines the Obama logo with an Alamo image in the middle. The Aamobama image will be used on both cards and the website for continuity. I hope to have the site up by next week.

We are in the process of making business cards that sport our web address, meeting place & time and other general contact information. Hopefully we will have these for getting word out about our need for ACTIVE volunteers.

We are still looking for a place to watch the CNN Dem. debate on April 5. That also happens to be on the first Thursday of the month which with any luck will be our "permanent" meeting date.

We have quite a few events coming up in the San Antonio area within the next few weeks. There is the Dyeing of the river, and the following Parade. Carol is still looking for anyone who would like to participate in passing out materials and talking to community members about Barack.

On Saturday March 31 The Cesar Chavez March for Justice begins with an assembly and program at 11:00 a.m. at Avenida Guadalupe, 1321 El Paso. The grand marshal of this year’s march is Rita Chavez-Medina, Chavez’s elder sister. At 1:00 p.m., participants will begin a two-mile trek down Guadalupe, Frio, and Commerce Streets before reaching Alamo Plaza for the march’s program. More than 15,000 people participated in the march and program last year. This year as far as I know Sam has gotten us (Barack supporters) a spot in the parade.

On the same day as the parade March 31 there will be a Nation Wide Community Hope. Action. Change. Campaign. Barack will meet in the home of an Iowa based family and will simulcast online at 3pm central. Barack organizers are encouraging community members to gather and watch together.

Unfortunately for those of us in San Antonio the two March 31 events coincide. I am planning on going to the March with my husband and children, and possibly opening my home up to watch the online broadcast at a later time.

Please consider going to the events section to volunteer your time for one of the many events coming up. The more we can meet for these events, the more cohesive we can become as a group.

Notes from 2nd Alamobama meeting

About 9 of us met at Borders on I-10 on Friday to start to get a little more organized. We set some goals and got a few people working on different projects to reach those goals.

We have decided to meet on a the first Thursday of every month for consistency, and the venue will be announced soon.

We are planning to get together to watch the first democratic presidential debate (April 5th) and I'll be posting the venue as soon as I hear a final word on where. We hope to have as many supporters there as possible since we are also going to get the media there to cover it also. Please consider joining us...with a friend.

I've included the notes that Judy emailed us, if you feel you'd like to help in any of the areas listed below email me and I'll get you hooked up with the right person. We are looking for people who can donate their time to the campaign, so please don't be shy!!!

OK, time for work... the notes from the meeting are listed below!!

It must be the candidate 'cuz this is the best first grassroots meeting (or non-meeting) that I have ever attended.

While my notes are a little scattered, it looks like the following people stepped-up for Obama:

1. Carol will make Obama materials (stickers, etc) available to Alamobama volunteers asap. She will also coordinate with Sandy to reserve a table/partial table for the San Antonio Black Achievement Awards and post info about this event, as well as St. Patrick's Day and Cesar Chavez March, on Obama website.

2.Jennifer will head efforts to set-up Alamobama website and coordinate with Thomas to put website info on business cards to help recruit Obama volunteers. Jennifer will deliver business cards to Alamobama volunteers when they are available.

3.Ivan will network in legal community to recruit volunteers...and keep us informed about any relevant campaign laws.

4.Neil and Judy will research venues for April 5th Democratic Presidential Debate viewing party.
Judy will contact Alamobama volunteers with this information.

5.Judy and Bob will contact other Obama organizations in SA area and discuss combining our efforts.

6.Al will be on "temporary duty" to District 8 City Council race...but he is ready to rally for Obama once this election is over.

7.Entire group has committed to spread the word to the SA community to join our grassroot efforts!

Obama Rally pics!!!

Hi guys, This is a small set of the pictures I took at the Obama rally on Friday. I hope by now that you've heard that over 20,000 Obama supporters showed up to hear him speak in Austin. I had a blast and I'll be posting more pics up on my flickr account soon.

Here's a quick explanation of what what going on in the second half of the pictures.....

After the speech, Barack made his way around the stage greeting visitors and supporters. He came to the end of the stage but realized he hadn't gotten to say "hi" to the supporters on the other side of the stage. He was cut off by the actual stage and stopped for a few seconds to wave at them before deciding that stage or no stage, he was going to get over there and say "thank you for coming"!!

I spent the first half of the evening trying to log on.. and the second half of the night..., trying to log on! YAY for us! I'm really excited about the amount of activity going on here at mybarackobama.com. Plus, I'm finding more and more kids here in San Antonio, so things are looking good. I finally got signed on at about 9:30pm and look forward to a possible forum to express my goals for our community.

One of the most impressive things that I heard in Barack's presidential campaign announcement was his insistence that we each have a responsibility for our country's future. He didn't just stand up there and promise that he could fix it. He said that if we worked hard, he could help US FIX IT!

That inclusion, is what he's good at and I feel if anything, that is what our communities need. Without a sense of ownership in our surroundings we have no future to pass on to our little ones. We have to start making decisions as though lives depended on them.

So, I'm going to hang out for a bit and then sign off for tonight, maybe when I do someone else'll have a chance to log on!!
