A New Movement: Health Care as a Civil Right

A New Movement: Health Care as a Civil Right
Wednesday, 09 September 2009

There is only one true health care public option: Single payer. It covers everyone, all basic health care needs, with doctor of choice. No more premiums, co-pays or deductibles. All health care assets in America would become not-for-profit. The bill already exists. It is HR 676. Congressman John Conyers and I wrote the bill. Our bill has the support of 85 co-sponsors in the House. And it is backed by a growing national movement of labor, doctors, and nurses. The movement needs you. Please join me for tomorrow’s national conference call at 10:00pm EDT. Please call toll-free 1-800-230-1096.

The hour has arrived to begin anew the Civil Rights Movement, this time for Health Care for All. I am calling upon you to become a force in this movement. Go to Health Care as A Civil Right to learn how you can circulate a single-payer petition and organize in your community. Please help fund this effort. Please contribute .

The Preamble to the United States Constitution and Article One, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution both describe an originating purpose of our United States: to promote the general welfare. Health care is a legitimate function of our government. Health care is a basic right in a Democratic society. It is no more a privilege based on ability to pay than is the right to vote, which was once accorded only to property owners.

Health care is also a moral imperative. Forty seven million Americans are uninsured. Fifty million Americans are underinsured. People are losing their homes, their jobs, their life’s savings, their retirement security and their financial health because they cannot pay medical bills, and despite this calamity Washington looks another way. We must not avert our eyes to this human suffering and this economic injustice.

Let’s prepare a response which Washington will long remember as the time when the people reclaimed their government from the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Join us. Contribute. Together, we can initiate an action plan to intervene and provide health care for all.

• A National Health Care for All Conference Call from Washington, DC, at 10 pm EDT, Thursday, September 10th at 1-800-230-1096. Join us, so that we can discuss our new beginning and ways in which we can all help. Pre-registration is necessary in order to reserve sufficient phone lines. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . When you call in and the operator asks, "what conference call?" tell the operator, "Health Care for All."

• On-line petition. Please contact your lists, your family and friends. Please sign the petition for a single payer system. I will deliver the petitions directly to your Congressperson.

• Petition to download, print and circulate among friends and neighbors - including an instruction sheet.

• Health Care Meet-Ups. Coming Thursday September 10 2009.

I need your help to initiate this action. If you believe, as I do, that we can and must begin a new long-term state-by-state grassroots effort to create a single-payer, not-for-profit health care system, please contribute now.

Thank you.
Sincerely.
Dennis
Health Care Wanted: Dead or Alive

Health Care Wanted: Dead or Alive Tuesday, 18 August 2009
HEALTH CARE WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE

The masquerade is over! The "public option" is ... dead.

Health care reform is now a private option: WHICH FOR PROFIT INSURANCE COMPANY DO YOU WANT? You have to choose. And you have to pay. If you have a low income, under HR3200 government will subsidize the private insurance companies and you will still have to pay premiums, co-pays and deductibles.

The Administration plan requires that everyone must have health insurance, so it is delivering tens of millions of new "customers" to the insurance companies. Health care? Not really. Insurance care! Absolutely. Cost controls? No chance.

You will next hear talk about "co-ops." The truth is that insurance company campaign contributions have co-opted the public interest.

I need your help to spread the word and rally the nation around true healthcare reform which covers everyone and maintains fiscal integrity without breaking our nation's bank! Your contribution will empower our efforts to continue to fight for the single-payer, not-for-profit health care bill, HR676 "Medicare for All," which I co-authored with John Conyers.. The bill now has 85 sponsors in the House.

The hotly-debated HR3200, the so-called "health care reform" bill, is nothing less than corporate welfare in the guise of social welfare and reform. It is a convoluted mess. The real debate which we should be having is not occurring.

Removing the "public option" from a public bill paid for by public money is not in the public interest. What is left is a "private option" paid for with public money. Why should public money be spent on a private option which does not guarantee 100% coverage nor have any cost controls? A true public option would provide 30% savings immediately which would then cover the 1/3rd of the population who presently have no healthcare.

Unfortunately, under HR3200, the Government is choosing winners and losers in the private sector; proposing to spend public funds on subsidizing insurance companies who make money not providing health care. This process wil insure only one thing - the expansion of profits. Gone is the debate over cost.

As a result of current negotiations, the Medicare Part D rip-off will continue for another decade, further fleecing senior citizens. Drug importation has been dropped, so no inexpensive drugs can be accessed from other nations.

Instead we are told the pharmaceutical companies will accept a 2% cut in the growth rate of their profits - this they call cost control!

If the matter were not so serious, it would be farcical: The executive branch pretends that the proposed health care reforms are something they are not. The legislation is being attacked for something it is not. Congressional leadership and the White House defend the legislation, pretending it actually is the very proposal that is being attacked. But it is not.

A commonsense government health care reform policy would insure that every single American has full access to healthcare by expanding Medicare to cover everyone under a Single Payer System. We are already paying for a universal standard of care, it is just we are not getting it.

I need your help to spread the word and rally the nation around true health care reform which covers everyone and maintains fiscal integrity without subsidizing insurance and pharmaceutical companies and breaking our nation's bank!

My voice in Congress will continue to challenge the special interests who do not want single payer to succeed. I need you to join me in combating the special and corporate interests who spend millions to try to win this Congressional seat. With your help WE will win again. With your help I will continue to represent your concerns, be YOUR VOICE in the United States Congress, and be the voice for health care for all Americans!

Please contribute $25, $50, $100 in support of my campaign. Please contribute now.

With your help, we can accomplish ANYTHING in America. Persistence, dedication, truth and courage will lead the way and win out in the end.

Thank you.

FROM HTTP://KUCINICH.US

We speak with progressive Democrat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio). A House committee recently approved his amendment that would allow individual states to adopt a single-payer system.
Obama Healthcare Press Conference

I just finished watching president Obama's press conference. Everything looked staged and scripted, with long drawn out answers. I could comment on much but I will get right to what I feel is the most important point. All of the questions and attire seemed staged except for one woman who stood up to ask a question and with a smirk on her face she proceeded to ask about transparancy. This was a question in which Obama's answer did not seem smooth as the rest. She directly asked if Obama was keeping his promise of transparancy. Obama gave no direct answer. While he stood there for a good part of the hour purporting to know what goes on inside doctors offices when asked why his own office was not releasing TARP information his answer was 'I DONT KNOW'. So Obama says that he knows more about what goes on within medical offices but 'I DONT KNOW' what goes on inside my own office. Dont get me wrong I am not a republican I am not a Libertarian. But something about the entirety of politics seems like they are all disengunuine Jimmy Swaggerts. While I agree that healthcare reform is needed, let nothing be said of confidence in man. Something is fishy.

Just two days after the announcement at the White House the insurance companies reneged on the deal which was designed to protect and increase their revenue at least 35% The insurance companies reneged on the deal because they refuse any restraint on increasing premiums, copays and deductibles - core to their profits. No wonder a recent USA Today poll found that only four percent of Americans trust insurance companies. This is within the margin of error, which means it is possible that NO ONE TRUSTS insurance companies...

Revive Executive Order 11110

Along with the great effort of H.R. 1207 we need an effort to revive JFK's Executive Order 11110 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_Order_11110 write to Obama get petitions whatever also consider supporting Kucinich H.R. 2424

In case you do not understand the importance of this. Bernake's own admission the FED is the cause of our economic problems. Kennedy saw this and signed executive order 11110 before his assasination. It has been left hidden but is still there to free us from the FED. Please ask Obama to revive this!

Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) U.S. monetary reform is urgently needed: “It is long past time we look at the implications of . . . the privatization of money created by the 1913 Federal Reserve Act, the bank fractional reserve system and our debt-based economic system. Unless we have dramatic reform of monetary policy, the entire economic system will continue to accelerate wealth upwards. I am currently working on drafting legislation for an ‘American Monetary Act’ to address these and other issues in order to protect the economic well being of America.

“The U.S. government has been turned into an engine that accelerates the wealth upwards into the hands of a few. . . .
A letter from congress

Dear Friends,

As we reflect on President Obama's first 100 days in office, the hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer bailouts of Wall Street and the just passed budget, a staggering $3.4 trillion boondoggle, I wanted to share some good news with you.

As I write, H.R. 1207, my bill to audit the Federal Reserve, currently has 110 cosponsors in the House of Representatives. This piece of legislation is perhaps the most important of my career, and I thank you for your continued support in sending me back to Congress to fight for it.

A broad coalition of Representatives has joined with me in supporting your right to transparency at the Fed. For example, Rep. Tom Price (GA), head of the conservative Republican Study Committee, and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (CA), former head of the liberal Progressive Caucus, have both cosponsored the bill. Americans from all over the political spectrum are demanding an audit of the Federal Reserve. And with good reason!

Since its inception, the Federal Reserve has operated without sufficient transparency or accountability to the American people. In fact, current law specifically excludes the Fed from audit or real congressional oversight. No government agency has such an utter lack of sunshine.

The Federal Reserve has created and dispersed trillions of dollars in response to our current financial crisis. Of course, I am among the most outspoken critics of the bailouts, but Americans across the nation, regardless of their opinion of the TARP program, want to know where that money has gone and exactly how much has been spent.

H.R. 1207 will open up the Fed's funding facilities, such as the Primary Dealer Credit Facility, Term Securities Lending Facility, and Term Asset-Backed Securities Lending Facility to Congressional oversight.

Additionally, audits could include discount window operations, open market operations, and agreements with foreign central banks, such as the ongoing dollar swap operations with European central banks.

By opening all Fed operations to a GAO audit and calling for such an audit to be completed by the end of 2010, the H.R. 1207 would achieve much-needed transparency of the Federal Reserve.

Times are tough, and we continue to hear a stream of bad news. But I will continue to stand up for you in Congress and fight for our American traditions, to protect our Liberty and for an Audit of the Federal Reserve.

Thank you again for your support. I could not continue my fight without you.

In Liberty,

Ron Paul

If you would like to support Ron Paul or learn more about his campaign, log on to www.RonPaulforCongress.com

Did you know that 50% of high school graduates cannot pass a GED exam? I myself am a dropout but I passed the test. Education is not the governments job. And with the internet education should evolve. There should be no need for a public school system. Parents should take tutoring classes and teach their kids.

With wiki text book projects and projects like gutenberg.org. All of the necissary knowledge is at your fingertips. Do not resist change. Embrace it.

Kay and Eliza Marlow have launched an illegal attack on me.

by Jason M. Christos from http://docs.google.com/Edit?id=dgpmp8mq_106cbr32xq6

Kay and Eliza Marlow have launched an illegal attack on me. Which includes relentless libel on my blog. This message is to them as I know they watch my blog like a vulture. If you do not cease and desist your illegal activity and issue a written apology on your blog, You leave me no choice but to take legal action. Kay (http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/person/gjHnH ) and Blue Blue Eliza Marlow ( http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/blog/elizamarlow )... READ MORE

libel
1) n. to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of others. Libel is the written or broadcast form of defamation, distinguished from slander, which is oral defamation. It is a tort (civil wrong) making the person or entity (like a newspaper, magazine or political organization) open to a lawsuit for damages by the person who can prove the statement about him/her was a lie. Publication need only be to one person, but it must be a statement which claims to be fact and is not clearly identified as an opinion. While it is sometimes said that the person making the libelous statement must have been intentional and malicious, actually it need only be obvious that the statement would do harm and is untrue. Proof of malice, however, does allow a party defamed to sue for general damages for damage to reputation, while an inadvertent libel limits the damages to actual harm (such as loss of business) called special damages. Libel per se involves statements so vicious that malice is assumed and does not require a proof of intent to get an award of general damages. Libel against the reputation of a person who has died will allow surviving members of the family to bring an action for damages. Most states provide for a party defamed by a periodical to demand a published retraction. If the correction is made, then there is no right to file a lawsuit. Governmental bodies are supposedly immune to actions for libel on the basis that there could be no intent by a non-personal entity, and further, public records are exempt from claims of libel. However, there is at least one known case in which there was a financial settlement as well as a published correction when a state government newsletter incorrectly stated that a dentist had been disciplined for illegal conduct. The rules covering libel against a "public figure" (particularly a political or governmental person) are special, based on U.S. Supreme Court decisions. The key is that to uphold the right to express opinions or fair comment on public figures, the libel must be malicious to constitute grounds for a lawsuit for damages. Minor errors in reporting are not libel, such as saying Mrs. Jones was 55 when she was only 48, or getting an address or title incorrect. 2) v. to broadcast or publish a written defamatory statement.

Kay ( http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/person/gjHnH ) is a psycho stalker, has extreem paranoia, and blog comment turrets. But she is a nurse and she is upset because I say killing babies is wrong. Take a look below at the comments she left. She even proves herself wrong in one of the comments. Supposedly I am some other blogger that she must be stalking, paranoia? Then attempts to track me down and reports the wrong person to the DNC and FBI for "disabling my messages, which I didn't do. Will one of Kay's friends please calm her down? Or someone reading this befriend her because this woman is going crazy on me and I am gtting no responses frome the site admin.

here is her profile

Ohh and Blue Blue Eliza Marlow ( http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/blog/elizamarlow ) is her tagalong. She is only slightly less as paranoid as kay. claiming that I posted a false facebook site, whatever that means. Then proceed to impose her prejudices on me, and profile me because she has read a few blog entries that defend human life. No wonder Obama is considering reversing the conscience clause apparently these radical liberels like Kay and Blu Blue feel threatened because some people in this country beleive it is wrong to kill innocent human life.

Reader Comments

Audit the Federal Reserve (HR 1207) Update: 50 Co-Sponsors!

Audit the Federal Reserve (HR 1207) Update: 50 Co-Sponsors!
 						April 1st, 2009 8:10 pm | by Shelly Roche | from http://libertymaven.com/2009/04/01/audit-the-federal-reserve-hr-1207-update-50-co-sponsors/5120/

UPDATE: There are now 55 co-sponsors!

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video to watch visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZISrZOFuyA

A little background:
In 1950 the law was changed to exempt the Federal Reserve from any auditing procedures. Essentially, the Fed can use our tax dollars however they wish, without any obligation whatsoever to disclose what they’re doing. HR 1207 seeks to repeal that portion of the code, so when we ask questions, they HAVE to answer.

Why is this important?
As just one example, the Fed is refusing to give a public accounting of the trillions in recent taxpayer backed loans. Just look at the 700 billion in TARP funds that Congress appropriated and the Fed refused to talk about — we now know a portion of it ended up going to bonuses for the AIG execs.

We deserve to know how our tax dollars are being spent, and allowing the Federal Reserve to remain out of control and shrouded in secrecy clearly allows for abuse.

The good news is that this bill is actually gaining momentum - we’re up to 50 co-sponsors as of today (4/1), which is pretty phenomenal. The American people are starting to demand more oversight and push for transparency, and that’s exactly what we need to get things turned around.

The bad news is that some very powerful special interests really don’t want this to happen, so we’re up against a pretty major hurdle.

So, what can you do to help?
Sign this petition to urge your congressman to co-sponsor the bill.

Find out if your reps are on the list.

Please spread the word about this game-changing bill!

Using Technology to circumvent domestic spying (i.e. The "un" Patriot Act).
by Jason M. Christos

I have always said the domestic spying of the Patriot Act is silly because the real terrorists will use encryption making wiretaps useless. But the innocent average citizen will not have this protection. It's time honest citizens have the same protection as criminals. This protection has been around since 1991.

For email privacy I use Gmail + Thunderbird + Enigmail + GPG to send and receive encrypted emails. The How-to is coming soon.

For privacy while using the internet, I prefer to use Firefox + TORBUTTON + PRIVOXY + TOR ( anonymous network ) how-to coming soon.

For instant messaging privacy I preferr Pidgin + OTR which includes plausible deniability. How-to coming soon.

   ... more

Treat the cause not the symptom.

In response to comparing Obama's politics to FDR and the New Deal I commented:

The great depreession might have recovered sooner if it weren't for the New Deal. Lets leave the new deal in the history books and start seeing real change in Washington. So, to get more to the point if you watched Bernake (FED chairman) on national television the other day even he admitted that the FED caused the great depression among other problems. He also tells us basically that he doesn't know what is going to happen but he thinks we will recover soon. He also tells us that he is in control of the economy and the president has little to do with it. This will be the third catastrophic problem caused by the FED. Lets tell the FED it's one, two, three strikes your out at the old ball game. The FED was enacted to protect us from these occourances and it has failed misrebly. A new deal II would not help as much as ending the FED or like Kucinich says at least give congress control of the fed so we the people (represented by our elected congressman) could at least blame ourselves if the FED screws up. Right now our economy is in the hands of the FED unknown uncontrolled independent bankers. Obama should take some pointers from John F. Kennedy and attack the real problem, the FED. I guess he is afraid to get assassinated. Honestly Obama has little control over the economy. His new deal II is being exported overseas to Dubai and India among other foreign countries, further propping up the rich through bonuses, and he is increasing the wars and overseas spending. If you are going to spend at least spend on us. Lets support Ohio Democrat Dennis Kucinich lets get to the real solution, and that is doing something about the FED. When will we start seeing real change in Washington.

visit http://kucinich.us or Google HR1207

also research Kennedy's attempt to introduce a competing currency that would have smashed the FED

that brings about another point if Obama was a constitutional lawyer he must know that the FED is unconstitutional. there was never an amendment made. The constitution is the supreme law of the land. A congressional federal reserve act cannot supersede the constitution.

Do you want your Representative to Support HR1207? Above all, remember that this isn't a Republican vs Democrat issue. The Federal Reserve Transparency Act has been introduced into Congress by Congressman from Texas, Ron Paul. He has already found 28 Co-Sponsors for this historic legislation. If your Congressman or Congresswoman will not support this Bill, ask them for a detailed, logical explanation. The Fed. has been accountable to no one for 96 years. Here's a list of the Bill's Co-Sponsors. If your Representative is on the list, they are heroic, and deserve your thanks. If they are not on it yet, ask them why, and demand they actually give you an answer.

http://www.dailypaul.com/node/84938

Abercrombie, Neil (D-HI 1st)
Alexander, Rodney (R-LA 5th)
Bachmann, Michele (R-MN 6th)
Bartlett, Roscoe (R-MD 6th)
Broun, Paul (R-GA 10th)
Burton, Dan (R-IN 5th)
Chaffetz, Jason (R-UT 3rd)
DeFazio, Peter (D-OR 4th)
Duncan, John (R-TN 2nd)
Foxx, Virginia (R-NC 5th)
Garrett, Scott (R-NJ 5th)
Grayson, Alan (D-FL 8th)
Heller, Dean (R-NV 2nd)
Jones, Walter (R-NC 3rd)
Kagen, Steve (D-WI 8th)
Kingston, Jack (R-GA 1st)
Marchant, Kenny (R-TX 24th)
McClintock, Tom (R-CA 4th)
Paul, Ron (R-TX 14th)
Petri, Thomas (R-WI 6th)
Poe, Ted (R-TX 2nd)
Posey, Bill (R-FL 15th)
Price, Tom (R-GA 6th)
Rehberg, Dennis (R-MT At-Large)
Rohrabacher, Dana (R-CA 46th)
Stearns, Cliff (R-FL 6th)
Taylor, Gene (D-MS 4th)
Woolsey, Lynn (D-CA 6th)
Young, Don (R-AK At-Large)

Above all, remember that this isn't a Republican vs Democrat issue.

Congressmen urge Obama to reconsider troop surge in Afghanistan

Tuesday, 17 March 2009

By Michael Ruhl, University of New Mexico – Talk Radio News Service

Today a league of congressmen sent a letter to President Obama asking him to reconsider his military policy in Afghanistan before committing 17,000 new troops in a surge. The letter said, “As the goals of our seven year military involvement remain troublingly unclear, we urge you to reconsider such a military escalation”. This letter came from a bipartisan group of 14 members of Congress.

Congressman Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) said that he is “perplexed” by the president’s troop increase, considering that his administration has stated it is presently reviewing its strategy in Afghanistan. Congressman Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said that America is getting deeper into a “war without end” and that we need an exit strategy in Afghanistan.

Both Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) expressed concern on waging an endless war in such a time of economic peril. Kucinich said what the country needs is a healthcare surge, a home ownership surge, and an...

READ MORE HERE http://talkradionews.com/2009/03/congressmen-urge-obama-to-reconsider-troop-surge-in-afghanistan/

You have strong convictions, but President Obama says that doesn’t matter.

Remember above all this is an issue of protecting the rights of doctors against discrimination based on moral convictions. In violation of federal labor laws. It is not so much an issue of abortion or religion. However closely related lets stick to the issue.

You have strong convictions, but President Obama says that doesn’t matter. He’s ready to rescind the Conscience Clause.

The Conscience Clause was implemented by former President George W. Bush to give physicians and nurses the choice to act according to their conscience — to not participate in abortion procedures if it conflicts with their personal convictions. If President Obama makes this damaging move, if he reverses the Conscience Clause, pro-life doctors and nurses will be forced into performing abortion procedures, despite their individual beliefs... more

If Obama Doesn't Investigate Bush War Crimes, He Becomes An Accessory

Obama saying he doesnt want to look to the past but the future is a cop out. Wouldn't that be swell if I could commit crimes walk into court and say hey judge lets not look to the past lets look to the future, dont prosecute me for these crimes. Better yet wouldnt it be nice if my opponent said it for me? Obama has no guts. Is he afraid of Bush Rove Cheney? Or is he really on bushs side?

A Constitutional Law Professor at George Washington University has said that if Obama does not pursue prosecution he will become an accessory.
An Open-Letter to My Pro-Obama Friends

An Open-Letter to My Pro-Obama Friends
By Bretigne Shaffer

(Note: This article originally appeared on the Campaign for Liberty website: www.campaignforliberty.com )

  	        Printer-friendly version

Dear pro-Obama friends,

I got a call from one of you the day after the election. You were so happy. You had "not been so proud to be an American for... decades!" You're living overseas, and you told me about watching the results in a bar with other Americans and how you were all hugging and crying you were so happy. As I hung up the phone, I found that I felt happy for you too.

Most of you know that I supported neither McCain nor Obama, that I view them as equally opposed to peace and freedom and equally ignorant of sound economic principles. I wasn't going to be happy with the election results no matter who won, so I can at least be glad that some of my friends are happy, and I am. And after his first few days in office, even I have to admit that Obama has done some very good things for which he is receiving well-deserved praise. It is not my intention to dismiss these accomplishments, nor is it my intent to rain on anyone's parade. But I do want to ask you all a big favor.

I'm going to make some predictions about Obama's presidency. Essentially, I'm going to predict that four years from now, an Obama presidency will not look very different from the George W. Bush presidency, or from what I imagine a John McCain presidency would bring. If I'm wrong about this, then I promise that I will re-think my beliefs about our political system and about politics generally. But if I am right, then I'm asking you to do the same. I'm asking each of you to consider the seemingly bizarre proposition that there really is no significant difference between candidates offered up by the established party system; that Republican and Democrat are virtually indistinguishable; and that neither party has at heart the interests of you or me or "the American people." I'm asking you to consider the possibility that continuing to vote for these people just helps to perpetuate the very ills you seek to cure.

So here are my predictions. I'm going to leave aside areas such as the environment (I don't believe that government solutions to environmental problems will help anyone other than special interest groups — many of you probably don't agree with me) and wealth redistribution (I'm old fashioned and believe that theft is wrong even when the government does it) because we may not be on the same page on these issues. (However, on the issue of wealth redistribution, I will say this: Do you really believe that the same man who voted to bail out billionaire bankers at the expense of ordinary taxpayers is really going to help the poor stick it to the rich? Really?)

I'll stick to the areas where I think most of us agree: War and foreign policy; civil liberties; and the economy.

Let's start with war and foreign policy. Obama was not an anti-war candidate, and he is not an anti-war president. His opposition to the US occupation of Iraq was based not on a principled stance against pre-emptive invasion and occupation of a foreign country, but on his view that it had damaged the US's credibility and therefore its ability to engage in military interventions in the future. Senator Obama voted to continue funding the Iraq war and voted against a 2007 pullout in June of 2006. He does not plan to bring troops home from Iraq, but to redeploy them in Afghanistan, and he "support[s] plans to increase the size of the Army by 65,000 soldiers and the Marine Corps by 27,000 Marines." (from Obama's website, change.gov)

In an article for Foreign Affairs last year, Obama said "I will not hesitate to use force, unilaterally if necessary, to protect the American people or our vital interests whenever we are attacked or imminently threatened." (Emphasis mine.) He has promised AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) that he will "...do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Everything." Coming from the future leader of one of the most heavily nuclear-armed nations in the world, these are chilling words. Prior to his election, Obama also spoke of expanding the war on terror to Pakistan (indeed, by the end of his first week in office, he had already ordered air strikes on villages in Pakistan, killing at least 17 people including three children), and prior to his inauguration he remained silent as the Israeli government killed hundreds of civilians in Gaza with weapons provided by the US government.

The sad truth of the matter is that George W. Bush in 2000 ran on more of an anti-war platform than did Obama in 2008. Indeed, the danger inherent in a President Obama is that he will be perceived as being less bellicose than Bush or McCain. I believe that this will allow him to get away with even more than McCain might have, as he will face neither the public opposition nor opposition in Congress that a Republican president would have.

So, here are my foreign policy predictions:

At the end of Obama's first four-year term:

   1. The US will still have an active military presence in Iraq.
  2. The US will have attacked at least one more country that poses no direct threat to us. (I'm not even going to count his early air strikes on Pakistan.)
   3. Military spending will have increased.
  4. US citizens will be no safer from terrorist attacks. I say this because I believe the (sadly all-too-accurate) perception of the US as an imperialist warmongering nation will persist. I realize this one is open to interpretation. I would just ask you to honestly ask yourselves at the end of these four years whether this is the case.

My one caveat to this section is this: If the US government becomes financially unable to maintain its empire abroad, then Obama's military aspirations may be hampered by budget constraints. However I maintain (and Obama's own words support me here) that this will not be because of any lack of will on his part.

Moving on to civil liberties and human rights, I have to admit that this is the one area where Obama's presidency is already looking different from that of his predecessor. In his first few days in office, President Obama signed executive orders to 1) close Guantanamo within a year; 2) officially ban the use of torture in the military; 3) close the CIA-run secret prisons around the world; and 4) review detention policies and procedures and review individual detention cases. He has also suspended the military trials at Guantanamo for 120 days, and has acted to combat government secrecy. These are all good things and Obama is receiving well-deserved praise for them.

More important though, the fundamental problems facing civil liberties and human rights in this country do not stem from the operation of some detention centers. The damage inflicted has its roots in such things as the USA PATRIOT ACT (which Obama voted to re-authorize), drug law enforcement, and the repudiation of the very foundation of due process of law, habeas corpus. The big questions then, are: 1) whether Obama's administration will actually follow through on his executive orders and close Guantanamo, close the CIA prisons and truly end torture (there is also of course the question of what will then happen to the detainees); and 2) whether Obama will be able to tackle the more fundamental problems such as restoring habeas corpus and due process.

And there are some fundamental issues that Obama has not even taken on. While he is aware of the fact that more than one percent of American adults, and one out of every nine black men, are in prison, he does not tackle this issue head on. Nor does he really address the war on drugs in its entirety, nor the increasingly dangerous police state it has helped to spawn. To his credit, he has promised to end the illegal federal raids on medical marijuana clinics, and to eliminate the inherently racist sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine. However these measures don't even come close to addressing the fundamental problem that is the drug war itself. And some of his moves so far do not inspire hope: His appointment of Eric Holder, formerly a big proponent of mandatory minimum sentencing is worrisome. Even more disturbing, Obama has pledged to strengthen two federal programs ("Community Oriented Policing Services" (COPS) and the Byrne grant program) that have actually contributed to increased militarization of local police forces.

My predictions, then, are a bit more muted than in the other sections. On some of the big questions I listed above, I do not have any predictions. I hope that he does do all of these things, and if he does I will give him credit for it, and even admit that he may be better than McCain in this one area after all (although remember McCain said he was against torture too). To me though, real change means more than simply reversing the most outrageous of measures put in place by the previous administration. However if under Obama habeas corpus and/or due process (including an end to warrant-less searches and seizures) are fully restored, then I will absolutely admit that there are significant differences between the two men, and I will reconsider my view that real change cannot come through the political process.

I am also very concerned about Obama's plans for what amounts to compulsory national service for young people. The idea is that schools receiving federal funds will be strong-armed into implementing "service" (for government-approved endeavors of course) as part of their graduation requirements. I am not going to include this in my predictions however as I really don't have a strong view on whether this will come to pass or not.

What I do predict is the following. By the end of Obama's first term in office:

  1. More than 1% of US adults will still be in prison. This number will very likely be even higher than it is today, and the black and Hispanic portion of that population will not have decreased by any significant amount.
  2. We will still suffer from the kind of police abuse that is becoming more and more common: military-style raids on unarmed civilians in their homes; the shooting and tasering of unarmed citizens; and police and judicial corruption leading to the jailing of many more innocent people than can be acceptable under any system. The militarization and aggressive behavior of police forces will probably become worse before they get any better. This is another one that is somewhat open to interpretation. I would ask you to rely on your own honest judgement regarding whether you believe things have really changed in this area.
   3. "No-Fly" lists will still be in place, and there may even be more restrictions on travel.
   4. There will be more restrictions on gun ownership and the right to self-defense.
  5. The police tactics and suppression of dissent at the 2012 RNC and DNC conventions will be just as brutal as they were in 2008.
  6. Government surveillance of US citizens will continue (remember that bill Obama voted for that gave immunity to the telecoms companies that assisted with this in the past?),

Now for the easy part: the economy.

It is true that President Obama has inherited a tremendous problem from the previous administration. Any president would be hard-pressed to come out of the next four years claiming victory in this area. In fact, the best that anyone could do would be to not make things any worse by allowing markets to function, overvalued assets to depreciate and poorly run companies to fail. Barack Obama is not going to do that.

With his support for the massive financial-industry bailouts, and his plans for stimulus packages to get the economy on track again, President Obama is doing all the wrong things. What got us into this mess was too much borrowing and spending, too much government involvement in markets, and now he wants to implement more of the same as the solution. I'm not even going to ask you all to agree with my assessment. Just watch what happens.

My prediction: By the end of Obama's first four years in office, the US economy will be in much, much worse shape than it is now. Specifically:

  1. The US will have massive inflation. The dollar will lose at least 50% of its value against most goods and services, and certainly against the goods and services most people use every day. This is a very conservative estimate. It will probably be much worse.
   2. Unemployment in the US will be worse than it is now. It will be at least in the double digits.

Maybe you all have a different concept of what "change" means than I do. If so, then fair enough. But for me, at a bare minimum, any real change cannot possibly include a continuation of the US government's interventionist and imperialist foreign policy. Nor can it include the maintenance of the police state that allows government agents to spy on US citizens, burst into their homes in the dead of night armed to the teeth, seize the property of people not even connected to crime s, shoot and taser non-violent citizens with impunity and incarcerate nearly 1% of the population — or incarcerate anyone for crimes that have no victims. I believe that these things will continue unabated under the Obama administration.

If you agree with me that the continuation of these problems would not constitute the kind of "change" you are looking for, then I'm asking you to accept my challenge: If, by the end of Obama's first term in office, these areas are not significantly different from how they are now — that is, if the US is as much an imperialist, warmongering state as it is today, if civil liberties at home are no more protected than they are today and if the economy is in significantly worse shape than it is today — then I will ask you to admit that you were wrong about Obama. More than that, I'm going to ask you to rethink your views on about the political process more broadly. And I promise to do the same.

For years, I have said that real progress towards peace, freedom and respect for individual rights cannot come from working within the very system that sustains itself through war and the expansion of state power over people's lives. If in fact the Obama administration does herald great and significant change in these areas that we agree upon, then I promise to rethink these beliefs.

Let me correct myself on one point. Up above I said that there was no discernible difference between the Republicans and Democrats, or between McCain and Obama. That's not quite true. Obama is smarter. He will pursue his ends in a more intelligent and a more publicly palatable way than John McCain would have, and he will very likely be more successful in attaining them because of it. But what remains the same are the ends themselves. Ultimately, both parties stand for upholding American empire overseas and expanding the scope of the state in people's lives and the economy at home. If I am wrong about this, then I promise to re-think everything. But if I am not, then I hope you will do the same. Let's talk again in four years.

Discuss this article
