Well surprise surprise. The August 3 Gallup Poll shows a statistical tie between Senator Obama and John McCane

and once again I am recalled that the specious piece of race-baiting provocation distributed by “THE NEW YORKER” last month owns no small portion of this latest statistical proof that racism is alive and well in America.
By glorifying the worst human instinct to fear “the other” in a publication that he knew would appear conspicuously on the newsstands of thousands of street vendors and supermarket end caps, history will record that its publisher -- DAVID REMNICK -- purchased for “THE NEW YORKER” a unique place in humanity's pantheon of xenophobic nihilists: David Remnick is nothing less than the Poster Boy for racism in America today, and “THE NEW YORKER” its official advertising agency.
Think there is any coincidence to the precipitous tightening of these poll numbers just after that cover celebrated the dark corner of America's soul? I do not. Indeed, I'll be bold enough to submit that that cover is nothing less than a summons to the very base instinct it alleges it was attempting to satirize in the first place. The cover performed a PR feat on behalf of the McCane campaign that may be unrivaled in the hoary legend of American Politics: It broadcast to White America “don't just distrust Obama, remember that he is black!” and left the question to hang on a populace too ignorant to think beyond what they face in their mirror each day.
Jesus wept.
Well I'm not weeping, I'm angry. I want to grab Remnick by the collar and scream, “Are you satisfied now? You've taken a match to the one thing that you knew could damage Senator Obama's campaign! Not content with the cynicism in your own heart, you must promote it? You want the war in Iraq to continue? You actually want the systemic corruption now galloping through the Republican Party -- its latest iteration in the shame of Senator Ted Stevens only the latest! only the latest! -- for another four years, let alone eight? You want another four, possibly eight years of fiscal abandon? You want your children to be paying for this? What possible joy can you purchase from celebrating America's race to the bottom?”
Mr. Remnick, you own this latest Gallup Poll Sir! It is your face I will despise with my dying breath if history records that this election was lost because the GED-educated Lunchbox Joe -- who happened to step off the subway escalator on his way home and passed a newsstand showing Senator Obama in the most race/religion-provocative depiction your eunuch of an illustrator managed to contrive -- if this Lunchbox Joe INTERPRETED YOUR RACE-BAITING DEPICTION AS TRUE.
As of August 3, 2008 Senator Obama is statistically tied with John McCane.
If we have to suffer four more years of imperial presidency and profligate spending I nominate you, Mr. Remnick, as the poster boy for the fate “THE NEW YORKER” alone will have promoted to bring this Republic to ruin.
