Obama Said He Would Give Senior Military Leaders Opinions Great Weight In Implementing His Iraq Plan But As Commander In Chief Would Make His Own Assessment Of The Situation.

Obama was asked “what weight will you give to the counsel of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the CENTCOM [U.S. Central Command] commander, the combatant commander on the ground in Iraq and current intelligence chiefs on the ground in Iraq regarding an immediate phased withdrawal?” Obama said, “I will give their counsel great weight. But, as commander in chief, it is my responsibility to make my own assessment of the situation.

We must send a clear signal to the Iraqi political leadership that we are leaving Iraq on a timeline. Doing so will put pressure on those leaders to begin to resolve the political impasse at the heart of this civil war. But I also want to be clear about another thing. I am worried our Army is overstretched and that we have asked an awful lot from our military families.

Many in our senior military leadership are worried about a plan that will keep 130,000 troops on the ground in Iraq for the foreseeable future. So, as commander in chief, I will also have to take into consideration the counsel of other senior military leaders who may be concerned that Iraq is undercutting our ability to confront other security challenges.”

Obama Said U.S. Has To Make Sure "We Are Not Just Willy-Nilly Removing Troops" And That It May "Take A Little Bit Longer" In Some Areas Where There Is Less Stability.

"According to all the reports, we should have been well along our way in getting the Iraqi security forces to be more functional. We then have another 16 months after that to adjust the withdrawal and make sure that we are withdrawing from those areas, based on advice from the military officers in the field, those places where we are secured, made progress and we're not just willy-nilly removing troops, but we're making a determination - in this region we see some stability.

We've had cooperation from local tribal leaders and local officials, so we can afford to remove troops here. Here, we've still got problems, it's going to take a little bit longer. Maybe those are the last areas to pull out."

Dear Friend,

In recent days, people across the country have voiced the opinion that the so-called "compromise" FISA bill working its way through the Senate must be stopped.

As you already know, I am working hard to strip retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that allegedly cooperated with the President's illegal warrantless wiretapping program from the bill.

But that is not the only problem. This FISA legislation gives enormous powers to the government: including the ability to read emails and text messages and listen to phone conversations of anyone communicating with their family members, friends, associates, reporters, ANYBODY who may be overseas -- all with zero court review. Nobody should be supporting this legislation.

We can defend our country from terrorists while at the same time protecting the rights and freedoms outlined in the Constitution. It's time for our elected officials to stand up for the values on which our country was founded.

We should celebrate our Constitution this Fourth of July -- and do everything we can to prevent it from being torn up when the Senate returns to Washington next week.

Senator Obama today released the following statement on jobs numbers:

"As we head into the 4th of July weekend, today's report that our economy has lost another 62,000 jobs is a stark reminder that far too many Americans will spend this holiday out of work and struggling to provide for their families because of the failed policies of the last eight years.

"Our economy has now shed 438,000 jobs over the past six months, while workers' wages fail to keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries and healthcare. The American people are paying the price for the failed economic policies of the past eight years, and we can't afford four more years of more of the same. That is the essential issue of this campaign because Senator McCain has fully embraced the Bush economic agenda. I believe it has to change.

"But, as these numbers demonstrate, the American people can't wait another six months. We need action now.

Picnic For Change today in London, UK

Today is the Picnic for Change, one of 4,000 events to Unite for Change across the United States. And the rest of the world.

Last night, I was invited to speak at a Unite For Change event in Oxford, England. I got home late, to sleep even later, and have been up since 5 planning today's event.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were speaking in Unity, N.H. while I was at the Unite for Change event in Oxford. Not much time to add stories here.

A quick recap:

1. Thursday night, Barack Obama gave $2300 to Hillary Clinton's campaign. Michelle Obama also gave $2300 to the Clinton campaign.

2. Obama and Clinton, campaigning in Unity, the first of a series of campaign stops they'll make together.

3. 4,000 Unite for Change events planned for today.

The weather forecast is sunshine. A good sign for Obama.

I have to leave to go to the one I'm organizing in Regent's Park today.

This is the way it goes in the U.S. Our beloved Constitution, true trustee of Americans' defining rights, has a second amendment giving Americans the right to own guns.

The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution states:

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Washington, D.C., also referred to as the District of Columbia, had a 32-year old gun law banning handguns which has now been reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Would the D.C. ban stand, or does it conflict with the rights of Americans under the Constitution, the highest law in the land?

The way the NY Times tells it, Barack Obama was standing in the Flying Star Café Commissary in Albuquerque when a 23-year old woman put him on the spot.

"How do you ground yourself?" she asked, and then, "How do you keep yourself true to the things you say?"

Obama looked around, looked down, talked about his life, but searched for a way to give a better answer.

There Are No Accidents

Do you believe that? That there are no accidents?

On "Hardball" yesterday, on MSNBC, Chris Matthews referred to the "Obama headquarters" when talking about Osama Bin Laden. Earlier this year, on the same program, while mentioning Obama, guess whose photo appeared? Bin Laden!

The new *accidents* are being labeled "mis-statements" (we've heard that before) and *Instant Apologies."

Maybe someone should collect all the *instant apologies* from this campaign and publish them in a book. Maybe I should.

Chris Matthews instantly apologized for referring to Obama headquarters, according to the Huffington Post. When the photo of Bin Laden appeared while discussing Obama in February, he *apologized* later in the program.

At a trial, when a lawyer wants the jury to hear something that's not permitted to be said, the lawyer says it first, then apologizes, asking that it "be struck from the record." You learn in law school that once it's heard, you can tell people to disregard it, but once they hear it...

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have chosen what some might call a unique place to "unite" Friday.

It's called Unity. Unity, New Hampshire.

The numbers associated with Unity are pretty unique too. Both Senators received exactly 107 votes each in Unity in the Democratic primary.

I hope they gave a raise to the person who came up with the idea that both candidates would unite there.

McCain Top Advisor: Another Attack on U.S. "Big Advantage" for McCain

Charlie Black, McCain's chief advisor, said another terrorist attack on U.S. soil would help McCain become President. "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," says Black, in a Fortune Magazine interview.

Hush. Shush. McCain and Black, together, tried to spin it in a joint press conference.

McCain: "I strenuously disagree".

Black: "I deeply regret the comments. They were inappropriate."

Barack Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton had something to say about it, too.

"The fact that John McCain's top advisor says that a terrorist attack on American soil would be a 'big advantage' for their political campaign is a complete disgrace, and is exactly the kind of politics that needs to change.

"Barack Obama welcomes a debate about terrorism with John McCain, who has fully supported the Bush policies that have taken our eye off of al Qaeda, failed to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, and made us less safe."

Barack Obama is leading John McCain by 15 points nationwide, among registered voters, according to a new Newsweek poll. This is so much better than in late May, when Obama tied McCain at 46%. in the same poll.

How many voters said Obama is their preferred agent of change? 51%, versus 27% who saw McCain this way.

Younger voters 18-39? Still better, Obama leads McCain 66% to 27%.

Obama Leads McCain by 5%

Barack Obama leads John McCain by 5%, according to a new Reuters/Zogby poll just released. A major finding: Obama leads big among independents, and among women.

Obama is leading McCain by 47% to 42%.

Among independents, Obama leads McCain by 52% to 30%.

Among women, Obama's lead is 51% to McCain's 36%.

McCain will be 72 this August. The poll reflected views of McCain's age; almost 2/3 said age shouldn't be a factor in the election.

Voters favored Obama as a manger of the economy by 45% to McCain's 40%; among independent voters, Obama led 50% to McCain's 28%.

Our Hearts! It's Our Hearts!

American hearts want to do the right thing. Democrats, Independents, Republicans, all want to do what's right; it's all in the defining.

Few Americans would have trouble defining that murder is wrong. Few Americans would agree that any of the heinous crimes we see commonly today, from maiming to rape to genocide, might be justified. Few Americans, if any, would fail to understand the pain of parents losing children from war or any other cause.

Americans are big on fairness. We like just. We like appropriate. We like giving the little guy a fair shake.

Most Americans have hearts as big as the whole outdoors. That's the expression, and I see no reason to not embrace it. Americans are still known for our compassion, our justice, our hearts.

It's just that our compassion has taken some truly wayward turns. Do you think most Americans feel compassion for the innocent Iraqis hurt in our relentless march to free Iraq from tyranny? When Americans see the haunting photos of faces caught by tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, the extremes of weather's hurtful power, do you think we feel no pain?

McCain Will Veto Beer

John McCain has been slipping lately. Verbally.

With other slips more serious, came a new campaign area: beer. McCain's wife Cindy is heiress to a beer fortune, and still heads the (huge) family company.

Why then would McCain veto beer? Did he really mean to? Perhaps it was just yet another slip of the tongue?

If you think of all the mis-statements (apply your own version to what that might mean) George W. Bush has made, would you like another four years of a President apparently not in control of what he says?

We know this was innocent. Probably. What about all those posters, though?

Kucinich Website Hacked? After Introducing Articles of Impeachment

This is a big deal, and maybe a big deal.

The big deal: Rep. Dennis Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against President Bush in Congress Monday. (NY Times story here).

Maybe a big deal: Party leaders were not happy about this, believing it could lead to polazarized views among Democrats when they'd like to unite behind their new candidate for President. So maybe it's not a big deal; Kucinich's former impeachment move against Vice President Dick Cheney was unsuccessful.

May be a big deal: Kucinich's re-election website was forced to shut down yesterday, right after Kucinich introduced the impeachment articles against Bush. Suspicious? Or just too many hits? (100,000 people an hour went to the Kucinich website looking for the articles of impeachment).

A spokesman for Kucinich said they're suspicious, but aren't sure if the website were - or weren't - hacked.

Our election is getting wall-to-wall coverage on television and in all the newspapers here in the UK, which may surprise a lot of Americans back home. This morning I was interviewed by the charming Dermot Murnaghan on Sky News, and asked to comment on Barack Obama's securing the Democratic nomination. I hadn't realized that the interview was broadcast around the world! Afterwards I even received an email from someone who had watched from Hong Kong! And from Paris, France.

They didn't attach a microphone until a minute after the interview started, when it felt like a little animal was crawling around my leg, and then attaching something behind my shoulder. While concentrating on the questions, wanting to do my best to answer accurately, focusing on the interviewer, I realized what was going on but tried not to show it. I hope you find this video interesting, but please excuse the sound track.

The night felt like magic.

Every minute or two, another superdelegate endorsement was announced for Barack Obama. They kept coming faster and faster; it really did feel like an avalanche of superdelegates were announcing support for Obama. On the Obama website, supporters wrote messages about how happy they were, and how much joy they were feeling. Some said they had red, white, and blue balloons waiting to hang outside their doors the moment Obama won the nomination; some said they'd break out special bottles of (beer) (champagne) they saved for this night. On Democrats_Worldwide, the international discussion group for Democrats, the mood was euphoria as people toasted to Obama in messages from Cape Cod to Australia to Afghanistan to Paris.

What I missed:

Supersmart Strategy. In a choreographed coup de grace, endorsement after endorsement, and still, Obama released a jetée of 26.5 more superdelegates endorsing him the moment polls closed; the crescendo reached the magic number for nomination.

26.5 delegates, all in a row, from every region and leadership level.

Ivan Holmes, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair and superdelegate, will endorse Obama tonight.

Holmes has led the Oklahoma state party since 2007. He initially supported John Edwards.

Maryland Superdelegate Bel Leong-Hong

Belkis (Bel) Leong-Hong, Maryland superdelegate, and DNC member, announced today that she is endorsing Barack Obama for President. She is the Asian-American and Pacific Islander Caucus Chair for the DNC.

"Obama has shown a remarkable ability to bring people together," Leong-Hong said. "I’m endorsing Barack Obama today because I believe he is the strongest candidate for the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community."

Bel Leong-Hong retired from the Department of Defense in 1999 as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C3I)/ Planning and Resources after 30 years of service. She also held the position of the second in command of the Defense Security Service (DSS), as its Principal Deputy Director and CIO.

Kansas Superdelegate for Obama

Kansas Rep. Dennis Moore says he is endorsing Barack Obama's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Moore says he hopes the contest will end soon so "the healing process will start and Democrats will come together and support the nominee."

Rep. Nancy Boyda, Kansas' other Democratic U.S. House member, says she will remain uncommitted.

Obama easily defeated Clinton in Kansas' Democratic caucuses in February. Obama has effectively clinched his party's nomination based on an Associated Press tally of public commitments from delegates and more than a dozen private commitments.

California superdelegate Kamil Hasan, DNC member, endorses Barack Obama

"His election as the President of the United States will not only help unite a very divided nation, but elevate the image of the United States in the world to a level not seen since John Kennedy was the President," said Hasan.

District of Columbia superdelegate, and DNC member, Ben Johnson endorsed Barack Obama.

“It’s time to close ranks behind Barack Obama, who has run an outstanding campaign and made many of us proud," said Johnson.

Florida superdelegate and DNC Member Diane Glasser endorsed Barack Obama.

Edwards Pledged Delegates Supporting Obama

An announcement from the Obama campaign:

Additional Edwards pledged delegates will be supporting Barack Obama. This means - every delegate pledged to Sen. Edwards in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina will be supporting Obama in Denver. Plus - 10 out of 13 Edwards' Florida delegates will support him.

Here's the full current list of Edwards delegates committed to Barack Obama. The Florida delegates will cast one-half vote each, as the DNC Rules committee decided Saturday.

The Obama campaign lists 30.5 delegates to go for Obama to secure the nomination on their blog posts; 29 to go on the website main page.

Associated Press called the nomination for Obama at 1:40 today. The Clinton campaign called it a lie.
