My wife made me canvass for Obama; here's what I learned

Charlotte, N.C. - There has been a lot of speculation that Barack Obama might win the election due to his better "ground game" and superior campaign organization.

I had the chance to view that organization up close this month when I canvassed for him. I'm not sure I learned much about his chances, but I learned a lot about myself and about this election.

Let me make it clear: I'm pretty conservative. I grew up in the suburbs. I voted for George H.W. Bush twice, and his son once. I was disappointed when Bill Clinton won, and disappointed he couldn't run again.

I encouraged my son to join the military. I was proud of him in Afghanistan, and happy when he came home, and angry when he was recalled because of the invasion of Iraq. I'm white, 55, I live in the South and I'm definitely going to get a bigger tax bill if Obama wins.

I am the dreaded swing voter.

So you can imagine my surprise when my wife suggested we spend a Saturday morning canvassing for Obama. I have never canvassed for any candidate. But I did, of course, what most middle-aged married men do: what I was told.

At the Obama headquarters, we stood in a group to receive our instructions. I wasn't the oldest, but close, and the youngest was maybe in high school. I watched a campaign organizer match up a young black man who looked to be college age with a white guy about my age to canvas together. It should not have been a big thing, but the beauty of the image did not escape me.

Instead of walking the tree-lined streets near our home, my wife and I were instructed to canvass a housing project. A middle-aged white couple with clipboards could not look more out of place in this predominantly black neighborhood.

We knocked on doors and voices from behind carefully locked doors shouted, "Who is it?"

"We're from the Obama campaign," we'd answer. And just like that doors opened and folks with wide smiles came out on the porch to talk.

Grandmothers kept one hand on their grandchildren and made sure they had all the information they needed for their son or daughter to vote for the first time.

Young people came to the door rubbing sleep from their eyes to find out where they could vote early, to make sure their vote got counted.

We knocked on every door we could find and checked off every name on our list. We did our job, but Obama may not have been the one who got the most out of the day's work.

I learned in just those three hours that this election is not about what we think of as the "big things."

It's not about taxes. I'm pretty sure mine are going to go up no matter who is elected.

It's not about foreign policy. I think we'll figure out a way to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan no matter which party controls the White House, mostly because the people who live there don't want us there anymore.

I don't see either of the candidates as having all the answers.

I've learned that this election is about the heart of America. It's about the young people who are losing hope and the old people who have been forgotten. It's about those who have worked all their lives and never fully realized the promise of America, but see that promise for their grandchildren in Barack Obama. The poor see a chance, when they often have few. I saw hope in the eyes and faces in those doorways.

My wife and I went out last weekend to knock on more doors. But this time, not because it was her idea. I don't know what it's going to do for the Obama campaign, but it's doing a lot for me.

Israel's Best Interest is a Morally Strong America

I am supporting Obama for president for two reasons: one is my disdain for the McCain-Palin ticket, and the other my respect and admiration for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.Among Jewish voters, some feel the basic question is which candidate will act in the best interest of Israel. The answer is Barack Obama. As an American Jew who loves Israel, I cannot support John McCain. He cannot provide what Israel needs most--a respected, credible, morally strong America. To have the United States and Israel both regarded by the rest of the world as unreliable and in isolation is no way to solve the problems that plague both countries. This has been the effect of the Bush policies, and these are the policies that John McCain has promised to continue. Barack Obama is the candidate who can restore America's moral authority in the world and position our government to help negotiate peace.

The most vexing problem Israel faces is its relations with its neighbors. From the inception of the state until today, Israelis have felt besieged, surrounded by enemies who want to make them disappear. The constant security threat has made it very difficult for Israel to address the long list of problems that for the most part have been swept under the rug while awaiting peace. These include a disastrous educational system, a widening gap between rich and poor, and bitter division between secular and religious Jews. Israel desperately needs peace if it is to come anywhere close to being the "light unto nations" of Jewish dreams.

I quarrel with the oft-heard assumption that "George W. Bush is good for Israel." He gleaned many Jewish votes on that slogan, but I take a contrarian's position. Israel is further from peace than it was at the end of the Clinton administration. The smoldering hatred between Iraq's Sunni and Shi'a has burst into flames as a result of the American occupation. An emboldened Iran, with its Shi'a majority, has strengthened and armed Israel's enemies Hamas and Hezbollah. But Israel's most immediate danger comes from a nuclear Iran. Under the Bush administration, conversations with the Iranians began only at the end of May 2007 and have been badly mishandled. The result of the Bush doctrine in the Middle East has been an America and an Israel that are regarded with hatred and fear.The region requires an honest broker that will push both sides towards a workable solution and a two state outcome. I remember the scene at the White House when President Clinton helped Prime Minister Rabin to shake Arafat's hand. Whether an American president is prepared to preside over another handshake--one that could build lasting peace--should not be measured by his professed love for one side or the other, but by his judgment.

John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as running mate is the towering example of his poor judgment. Palin's ignorance of public affairs is monumental. Especially disturbing to the Jewish voter should be her willing acceptance of the campaign assignment of demagogy, which has stirred up racism and hate. The prospect of our having a 72-year-old president in poor health raises the real possibility that Palin could be our president, a thoroughly frightening thought. (I am well aware, in my eightieth year, of the flagging energy of any 72-year-old.) McCain's choice of Palin was a bid to the extremists in the Republican party, not the considered choice of a man who puts his country first.

Barack Obama is the leader who can begin to undo some of the damage done by Bush's policies. His background as an American who has lived among diverse cultures makes him sensitive to the cultural and religious motives that shape conflicts. He is cerebral, measured, calm, and pragmatic. By his character, he will engage these issues with more than stonewalling and weapons. He is brilliant in his choices of advisors. He is a tough idealist who has the courage to imagine an America that may inspire hope, not fear, in the Middle East and around the world.

Voters who care about Israel's welfare should ask which candidate will help sustain the ties between Israel and American Jews. Those of us who were alive at the creation of Israel have a love for Israel that is tied to the Holocaust, to the displaced persons camps and to the early struggles for a Jewish homeland. We were all as generous as we could be in support of Israel, as donors and as advocates. Now there is a generation growing up that is more distant from Israel than I should like. Young Jews do not automatically support Israel, and many are rightly troubled by what they learn about the ill treatment of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation. No longer motivated by fear of anti-Semitism, they seek to understand what Israel stands for, not to say "my Israel, right or wrong." Without strong support among the younger generation of American Jews, Israel may lose its vital relationship with the US government.

Obama can inspire much-needed support for Israel among this next generation of American Jews. He reflects their idealism and speaks in the language of hope they understand. His approach to international affairs shows a commitment to restoring America's reputation and to working with our allies to combat war, poverty, disease, and environmental destruction. He has articulated a vision for American society that does not ask us to ignore our differences--religious, racial, or economic--but to set aside divisive rhetoric and acknowledge that we all have a stake in building a more ethical society. Under his leadership a renewed America can help to foster a renewed Israel. Barack Obama is an inspiring American, willing and able to lead this nation and the world to new heights in very perilous times. I will vote for him with enthusiasm.

On a workaday morning outside the College Hill Library on Tampa's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, an old man's knees begin to buckle.

He is standing outside along with dozens of others, most of them black, some who lined up even before the library-turned-early-voting-site opened its doors.

As the man starts to crumple, people rush out of line to help. Get a chair, they are saying, and give him air, and somebody call an ambulance.

By the time paramedics come, as a stranger fans the man with a hunk of cardboard, he looks a little better. I'm diabetic, he explains, and is quickly handed a peppermint from someone's purse.

But when they ask if he wants to go to the hospital, his eyes are clear. No, he says, fully intending to see this moment in history through.

Voters came to the little brick library overlooking the old cemetery this week in church vans and family cars and work trucks. They were young people who never voted before and longtime Democrats and older folks leaning on canes. They waited in hot sun and cool drizzle. They came by the hundreds and, by week's end, the thousands. I've parked easier at Bucs games.

"Is it worth it? To be a part of history in the making? Yes, ma'am," John Jones, who is mid line after about an hour, tells me. "I'll wait 'til tomorrow if I have to."

A few wear shirts that say Obama. On cars that fill the parking lot and spill down neighborhood streets, I see none of the McCain-Palin bumper stickers routine in traffic these days.

The old man who buckled is not the first to rally here in the name of democracy. Earlier in the week, an elderly woman was similarly overtaken, perhaps by the heat. Once revived, she too said no, she would not go.

"She said she'd never have this chance again," says Bernadine White-King, who is standing by the street in a T-shirt bearing the name of a candidate for local office.

"Too many people died for this," she says.

As traffic flies past, people stand talking about Obama and all that electing the first black president might mean. They also talk about work and day care and lunch and whether the rain plans to keep up all weekend.

A nonprofit group in a shrimp-and-sausage truck — sort of the carnivorous bright-yellow version of an ice cream truck — has come to dole out free bottled water and hot dogs.

"People are hungry," says Ola Youngblood, passing a dog through the truck's window into eager hands.

A man stands by the street with a stack of rectangular papers. Printed on each is a list of recommendations from the Hillsborough Democratic Black Caucus, Barack Obama front and center. He leans down to put one into the hands of a small boy clutching his mother.

"Historic, young man," the man says. The boy goggles up at him.

From her front porch across the street, Jacqueline Johnson watches the voters come and go, come and go.

"I think it matters to a whole lot of people," she says as the line inches forward.

We chat awhile — she's a former nursing assistant who likes Obama on jobs, Social Security, choice — and after a time I say goodbye. As I latch the chain-link gate behind me, she calls from her porch.

"Don't forget to vote," she says.

Catholic groups launches pro-Obama web site

DALLAS - Catholics for Obama has just launched a web site as the Nov. 4 White House race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain enters its final laps.

Catholics, who account for close to a quarter of the U.S. adult population, comprise a key religious group that both sides have tried to woo. In closely contested swing states such as Ohio or Florida the Catholic vote could make a difference.

The web site is sure to stoke controversy in Catholic circles with this statement: “Is Barack Obama really pro-life? The answer is ‘yes.’ Looking through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching, Senator Obama has spent his entire career striving for the common good. He supports health care programs that will cover all Americans, a living wage for working families, and solutions that allow distressed families to stay in their homes.”

It goes on to say that Obama, a strong advocate like his party of abortion rights, will reduce the number of abortions by promoting health care for pregnant women and infant care.

Why I Support Israel and Obama

I am a strong supporter of Israel (though sometimes critical of specific policies). I am also a strong supporter of Barack Obama (though I favored Hillary Clinton during the primaries). I am now getting dozens of emails asking me how as a supporter of Israel I can vote for Barack Obama. Let me explain.

I think that on the important issues relating to Israel, both Senator McCain and Senator Obama score very high. During the debates each candidate has gone out of his and her way to emphasize strong support for Israel as an American ally and a bastion of democracy in a dangerous neighborhood. They have also expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself against the nuclear threat posed by Iran which has sworn to wipe Israel off the map and the need to prevent another Holocaust.

There may be some difference in nuance among the candidates, especially with regard to negotiations with Iran, but supporters of Israel should not base their voting decision on which party or which candidates support Israel more enthusiastically. In the United States, Israel is not a divisive issue, and voting for President is not a referendum on support for Israel, at least among the major parties.

I want to keep it that way. I want to make sure that support for Israel remains strong both among liberals and conservatives. It is clear that extremists on both sides of the political spectrum hate Israel, because they hate liberal democracies, because they tend to have a special place in their heart for tyrannical regimes, and because they often have strange views with regard to anything Jewish. The extreme left, as represented by Noam Chomsky, Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney, Norman Finkelstein and, most recently, Jimmy Carter has little good to say about the Jewish state. But nor does the extreme right, as represented by Pat Buchanan, Robert Novak, Joseph Sobran and David Duke. When it comes to Israel there is little difference between the extreme right and the extreme left. Nor is there much of a difference between the centrist political left and the centrist political right: both generally support Israel. Among Israel's strongest supporters have always been Ted Kennedy, Harry Reed, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The same is true of the centrist political right, as represented by Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, Oren Hatch and John McCain.

Why then do I favor Obama over McCain? First, because I support him on policies unrelated to Israel, such as the Supreme Court, women's rights, separation of church and state and the economy.

But I also prefer Obama to McCain on the issue of Israel. How can I say that if I have just acknowledged that on the issues they both seem to support Israel to an equal degree? The reason is because I think it is better for Israel to have a liberal supporter in the White House than to have a conservative supporter in the oval office.

Obama's views on Israel will have greater impact on young people, on Europe, on the media and on others who tend to identify with the liberal perspective. Although I believe that centrists liberals in general tend to support Israel, I acknowledge that support from the left seems to be weakening as support from the right strengthens. The election of Barack Obama -- a liberal supporter of Israel -- will enhance Israel's position among wavering liberals.

As I travel around university campuses both in the United States and abroad, I see radical academics trying to present Israel as the darling of the right and anathema to the left. As a liberal supporter of Israel, I try to combat that false image. Nothing could help more in this important effort to shore up liberal support for Israel than the election of a liberal president who strongly supports Israel and who is admired by liberals throughout the world. That is among the important reasons why I support Barack Obama for president.

"three small, elderly Jewish women"

From an early voter in Cincinnati...if this doesn't inspire you to help get people to early vote...

"Upon arriving at the Hamilton County Board of Elections in Cincinnati to vote early today I happened upon some friends of my mother's -- three small, elderly Jewish women. They were quite upset as they were being refused admitance to the polling location due to their Obama T-Shirts, hats and buttons. Apparently you cannot wear Obama/McCain gear into polling locations here in Ohio.... They were practically on the verge of tears.

After a minute or two of this a huge man (6'5", 300 lbs easy) wearing a Dale Earnhardt jacket and Bengal's baseball cap left the voting line, came up to us and introduced himself as Mike. He told us he had overheard our conversation and asked if the ladies would like to borrow his jacket to put over their t-shirts so they could go in and vote. The ladies quickly agreed. As long as I live I will never forget the image of these 80-plus-year-old Jewish ladies walking into the polling location wearing a huge Dale Earnhardt racing jacket that came over their hands and down to their knees!

Mike patiently waited for each woman to cast their vote, accepted their many thanks and then got back in line (I saved him a place while he was helping out the ladies). When Mike got back in line I asked him if he was an Obama supporter. He said that he was not, but that he couldn't stand to see those ladies so upset. I thanked him for being a gentleman in a time of bitter partisanship and wished him well.

After I voted I walked out to the street to find my mother's friends surrouding our new friend Mike -- they were laughing and having a great time. I joined them and soon learned that Mike had changed his mind in the polling booth and ended up voting for Obama. When I asked him why he changed his mind at the last minute, he explained that while he was waiting for his jacket he got into a conversation with one of the ladies who had explained how the Jewish community, and she, had worked side by side with the black community during the civil rights movements of the '60s, and that this vote was the culmination of those personal and community efforts so many years ago. That this election for her was more than just a vote ... but a chance at history.

Mike looked at me and said, "Obama's going to win, and I didn't want to tell my grandchildren some day that I had an opportunity to vote for the first black president, but I missed my chance at history and voted for the other guy."-

Now get in your car and drive some college students or any other "Obama-type"voter without a car to the early voting site; use your imagination; many want to be a part of history; they just need a little help...just like those three small, elderly Jewish women helped Mike...just like they were a part of history in the '60s...and again today.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Once portrayed as unpatriotic, Michelle Obama has quietly carved a niche on the campaign trail as a sounding board for military families, taking up a cause that could define her agenda as first lady.

Every few weeks, Obama meets with military spouses in swing states, where she presents herself as a kindred spirit and Barack Obama as the best choice for their families. She attended the two debates with military family members. And at the Democratic National Convention, she led a day of service on behalf of Blue Star Families for Obama, a two-month old group with the tagline: “Pro-Military, Pro-Obama.”

Obama aides say her work with military families has nothing to do with the controversy created by her February comment suggesting that the presidential campaign made her proud of the United States for the first time. But the effort could be viewed as an exercise in counterprogramming, serving as a rebuttal to criticism from Cindy McCain and others for a comment that Michelle Obama insists was misinterpreted – and the notion that her husband, a Democrat with no military service, cannot peel off voters from John McCain, an ex-Navy pilot and war hero. “Barack and I know that too often it feels like you are alone, on your own,” Obama told military spouses last month in Santa Fe, N.M. “I know you become everything. In a small way, I have experienced that over the course of this campaign, but in no way does it compare to what you are going through.”

Michelle Obama's focus on military families puts her at the leading edge of the Democratic nominee's campaign to reclaim some of the military vote from Republicans – an effort that brought Barack Obama here Sunday for a rally near Fort Bragg, where a military wife introduced him and he touted his endorsement from Colin Powell, the retired four-star general and President George W. Bush's first Secretary of State.

Since the start of the campaign, Michelle Obama says she has focused on three things: keeping life normal for her young daughters, electing her husband, and discussing the work-life balance with women around the country. The spouses of service members captured her attention during a roundtable with working mothers, and she later hosted her first military-focused event in Fayetteville in May, a day before the North Carolina primary.She will hold her seventh military spouses meeting Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., following similar events in recent months in states heavily impacted by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, including Virginia, New Mexico and Pennsylvania.

At each roundtable, she sits on stage with several spouses, delivers prepared remarks and opens a discussion. The roundtables draws local media coverage, and she answers questions about her involvement when asked by national reporters, as she did during an interview with CNN at the Democratic convention.

“Mostly I am here to listen and to do a lot of learning and then to transfer that information into the heart and mind of my husband as he moves forth,” Michelle Obama said in Norfolk, Va., in August. “The commander in chief doesn’t just need to know how to lead the military, he needs to understand what war does to military families.”

Her work in this area offers a hint at what could dominate her time in the White House.

“If she becomes first lady, this will be her cause,” said Amanda McBreen, 47, a Marine wife who participated in the Norfolk roundtable and helps coordinate 24 state chapters of Blue Star Families for Obama.Michelle Obama pledged to do so in the Oct. 27 issue of U.S. News and World Report, when she explained what she would do if her husband became president: “I would work daily on the issues closest to my heart: helping working women and families, particularly military families. … I'd continue these conversations with working women and military spouses, and I'd take their stories back to Washington to make sure that the people who run our country know how their policies touch their constituents' lives.”

But Kathy Roth-Douquet, a founder of Blue Star Families and a Marine spouse who supported Hillary Rodham Clinton in the primary, said she wishes more voters knew about Michelle Obama’s work.

“She is probably the most motivating figure in the military family community,” Roth-Douquet, 44, said. “We like Obama, but we love her. She gets what we are getting.”

Jewish studies scholars for Obama

Jewish Studies Scholars in Support of Obama

Over 200 scholars in Jewish Studies have signed a statement supporting Barack Obama for president. The signers, who include some of the most prominent people in the field, argue that "Senator Obama shares many of the values and positions held by the majority of American Jews." They point out that his positions on domestic and foreign issues, including Israel 's security, are in agreement with those of most Jewish voters.

The scholars urge American Jews to vote with the "minds as well as their hearts" and to overcome the fears of an Obama presidency stoked by false rumors circulated in the Jewish community.

"Senator Obama," they write, "has dedicated himself to promoting racial and religious tolerance and coexistence, speaking out against anti-Semitism and bigotry of all kinds. He embodies the Jewish hope for a society in which race, ethnicity, and religion are not barriers to achievement."

The signers include faculty members and independent scholars in regions of the country, as well as American scholars living in Israel , Canada , and Great Britain . They teach, research, and lecture on all aspects from Jewish history, culture, and religion, from the Bible to modern times.

JEWISH STUDIES SCHOLARS IN SUPPORT OF BARACK OBAMA

As Americans we support Barack Obama for president because we believe that he is the best person to lead our country through these difficult times. Senator Obama's firm grasp of the issues, his ability to work with diverse groups of people, and his humane and progressive social vision will bring a welcome change from the governing style and policies of the last eight years.

As scholars of Jewish Studies, we are concerned that distortions of Senator Obama's record and biography have caused undue anxiety among American Jews about what an Obama presidency would mean for Israel and the Jewish community here.

We urge Jewish voters to see through the partisan attacks and recognize how much they have in common with the senator. Jewish Americans have long played an important role in efforts to achieve a more just society not only for themselves, not just for other minority groups, but for all Americans.

The Obama candidacy offers us the chance to play such a role once more. In fact, Senator Obama shares many of the values and positions held by the majority of American Jews:

Senator Obama supports policies which promote equality of opportunity and social justice:

--the defense of social security against attempts to privatize it.

--a fairer tax system, including tax cuts for the elderly.

--expanded health coverage and defense of Medicare.

--aid to education at all levels.

He calls for energy independence through the development of renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources.

He is consistently pro-choice and pro-civil liberties, resisting attempts to blur the boundaries between church and state.

He opposed the misguided Iraq war from the beginning, understanding it as a distraction from the true war on terror. Most importantly,

Senator Obama has dedicated himself to promoting racial and religious tolerance and coexistence, speaking out against anti-Semitism and bigotry of all kinds. He embodies the Jewish hope for a society in which race, ethnicity, and religion are not barriers to achievement, a dream shared by African Americans.

We urge Jewish voters to vote with their minds as well as their hearts, and not to allow themselves to be misled by pernicious lies concerning the candidate's religious and ethnic background. We know that most American Jews realize the danger presented by such lies. The truth is that Senator Obama is a strong friend of Israel , a position recognized by many Israeli leaders during his visits to that country. They understand that Senator Obama's foreign policy is more conducive to Israel 's security than is the bellicose Bush-McCain approach. The Jewish Americans who know him best, those in the Chicago community, also count him as a longtime ally and friend. They know that the rumors that have been circulating among Jews for months - that Senator Obama is a Muslim who would be hostile to Israel and Jewish interests - are patently false attempts to play to Jewish fears.

Finally, we are concerned about the possibility that John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, might become president. Not only has she has shown herself to be unready to take over should something happen to Senator McCain, but she shown herself to be at odds with the values of most American Jews throughout her political career: She supports the teaching of creationism in the public schools, failed to acknowledge the human role in climate change, and opposed the right to an abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

The stakes are high in this election. Military donations favor Obama over McCain

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. soldiers have donated more presidential campaign money to Democrat Barack Obama than to Republican John McCain, a reversal of previous campaigns in which military donations tended to favor GOP White House hopefuls, a nonpartisan group reported Thursday.

Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama's presidential campaign as they have to McCain's, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

The results also are striking because they favored Obama, who never has served in the military. McCain meanwhile, is a decorated war veteran who spent nearly five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. The Arizona senator graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and had a 22-year career as a naval aviator.

Obama has opposed the war in Iraq and says he would withdraw combat troops within 16 months. McCain has been a steadfast supporter of the war, saying he would withdraw the troops only when conditions on the ground warrant it.

"Obama will work tirelessly to uphold this nation's sacred trust with its veterans, to ensure they are not forgotten after they return home and he will provide our troops with the leadership they deserve, as well as the support they and their families need," Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

McCain's campaign played down the significance of the donations.

"John McCain has been endorsed by more retired admirals and generals than Barack Obama has military donors," McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb said in a statement.

"We feel confident that many U.S. troops stationed overseas will support John McCain in the election this fall, but we suspect most are too busy doing the important work of defending this country than to make political contributions," Goldfarb said.

Among soldiers serving overseas at the time of their donations, 134 gave a total of $60,642 to Obama while 26 gave a total of $10,665 to McCain.

The report tracked donations of $200 or more. It found that 859 members of the military donated a total of $335,536 to Obama. McCain received $280,513 from 558 military donors.

Conservative Buckley endorses Obama :"first-class intellect"

(CNN) — No, hell has not frozen over, but a Buckley is backing a Democrat for president.

Christopher Buckley, the son of the late conservative icon William F. Buckley, said Friday he's decided to back Barack Obama's White House bid, the first time in his life he will vote Democrat.

“It’s a good thing my dear old mum and pup [sic] are no longer alive. They’d cut off my allowance," Buckley, a columnist for the conservative National Review, wrote on the Web site The Daily Beast Friday.

Buckley, who praised McCain in a New York Times Op-Ed earlier this year and defended the Arizona senator's conservative credentials against wary talk-radio hosts, said McCain is no longer the “real” and “unconventional” man he once admired.

"This campaign has changed John McCain," Buckley wrote. "It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget 'by the end of my first term.' Who, really, believes that?

"Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis," Buckley added. "His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?"

But Buckley made clear he's not just voting against McCain, praising Obama for his "first-class temperament and first-class intellect.

"Obama has in him—I think, despite his sometimes airy-fairy 'We are the people we have been waiting for' silly rhetoric—the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for," Buckley wrote.

In 49 years of living in Charlotte, I've seldom offered my opinion in writing and never submitted a piece such as this. The condition of our country compels me.The economic disarray threatening our community and nation poses critical challenges but also presents opportunity. "What I Saw When I Voted Today"...great story from Columbus voter......

"I headed down to the Hamilton County Board of Elections and saw the most beautiful thing ever - a line of people registering to vote at one end of the office and a line of people waiting to vote early at the other end of the office. It was an amazing sight!!

As an African-American woman in her 20s, let me just to tell you how beautiful it was to see 90% of the crowd be African-American - and the majority of the rest were young college students. Single mothers with their children, older women with tears in their eyes and a mentally challenged man standing in line asking who we were voting for. "Obama, right?" he said. "Obama ya'll!" ....

It was a beautiful sight and it was the one time in my life I was happy to stand in line."

'How 1 Early Vote = 10 votes on election day'

I encourage EVERYONE who supports Obama to vote early. And here's why:

If you vote early, you save the campaign valuable time and money, because they no longer have to spend their resources targeting you and making sure that you get to the polls. It costs a lot of money to run the phone banks, mail literature, and drive canvassers out to your place. When you vote early, you can simply notify the campaign, and they will put your response in a database.
Instead of wasting their efforts on a staunch supporter, they will be able to target and contact new and undecided voters. And their lists of election day GOTV targets will be whittled down, making them easier to read & follow for the hundreds of election day volunteers and staffers. It gets even better if you persuade someone else to vote early.
Not only do you bank their vote, you stop the campaign from inadvertently annoying them with calls and canvassing (of which too much of can be a turn-off). It IS possible to annoy your supporters with too much contact.
By voting early, you can get some of the leaners off the contact list and make their phones and doorbells a little bit quieter. Plus, you'll prevent them from heading the other way on election day.
Finally, you'll do a great service to the brilliant number-crunchers at HQ, because they'll gradually get a better picture of how things are shaping up, which precincts to target, and how to move votes. Their models are definitely going to appreciate the numbers you give them.
And best of all, you'll reduce the odds of GOP operatives 'challenging' you at the polls or forcing you to stand in artificially long lines on election night. By voting early, you REDUCE the possibility of election fraud by the GOP.

Come on, Ohio!!!...do you realize what a advantage we have, that other critical states like Michigan can only dream of? Please don't waste it. It's not enough to just early/absentee vote yourself, REACH OUT to help others early vote.

Contact your nearest office and offer to drive others, the elderly or students on campus without a car. Most people who don't have a car are Obama voters.
Make flyers listing the Early Vote location and hours open, listing free parking if available, and phone numbers to call if they need a ride.
Disribute the flyers on campus, at public housing centers, etc.
Use YOUR imagination' there are sp many living quiet lives of despration ho don't believe their vote can make a difference.

WASHINGTON - Seven prominent figures of the Israeli defense
establishment have voiced their support of US Democratic presidential
candidate Barack Obama.

All seven have given short interviewes featured on an online endorsement video, in which they praise Obama's Middle East policies.The video "stars" former Mossad Director Ephraim Halevy, former IDF
Chief of Staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, past head of the National Security
Council, General (Res.) Uzi Dayan, Amram Mitzna - former chief of the
IDF Central Command, and Brig.-Gen. (Ret.) Giora Inbar, who headed the
IDF's Lebanon Division.

Also featured are past IDF Gaza Sector Commander Brig.-Gen. (Res.) Shaul
Arieli, Brig.-Gen. (Ret.) Shlomo Brom of the Air Force Intelligence and
former Mossad official Yossi Alpher.

'The right man for the job'
The video was produced by the Jewish Council for Education and Research
(JCER), which has joined the Obama campaign in an effort to relieve some
of the concerns expressed by the Jewish voters in the US - many of whom
believe the democratic candidate's views may prove dangerous to Israel.

"It would take an extraordinary effort to stop Iran from obtaining a
nuclear weapon and 2009 is the last year in which that may be achieved,"
says Ephraim Halevy in the video. "Obama is a "breath of fresh air" and
he has great communications skills, which are very important in
negotiations, the former Mossad chief adds."

Lipkin-Shahak is quoted as saying that after listening to Obama he
"trusts him," and that he welcomes anyone who "might try to deal with
the axis of evil in a different way" than that of the Bush administration.

Dayan, on his part, voiced objections to Republican presidential
candidate John McCain's views of Iran, saying that "an American
president has to be involved in the Iranian issue... the US has to
negotiate with Iran because at the end of the day, you have to stop them
from getting nuclear capabilities."

Brig.-Gen. Inbar said he "would vote Obama in order to help Israel,"
Shlomo Brom is quoted as saying that "eight years of the Bush
administration have been detrimental to Israel's interests. McCain's
views are too close to Bush... that's not in Israel's best interest."

Yossi Alpher warned that McCain would continue Bush's failed policies,
Brig.-Gen. Arieli said that "Obama is the right man for the job," and
Amram Mitzna noted that "four more years of indecisiveness would harm
Israel. It is important that our greatest friend be involved (in the
Mideast peace process)."

It's MORE SPECIFIC than "the economy"; it's about if their taxes will increase. Half of voters now believe in the daily McCain refrain that Obama will raise their taxes. If you doubt that the big lies are sticking, look at the Washington Post/ABC News poll. If we talk to ANY undecided voter without talking about taxes, we will lose that vote. We have to talk about taxes EVERYDAY because McCain lies about it EVERYDAY...because it's working.

When I talk about TAXES I refer to the chart the campaign made that shows how much $ the different income brackets will SAVE w/Obama, COMPARED to McCain, so I ask what their yearly income is, then tell them EXACTLY how much they save...COMPARED to McCain.

He wants to tax your employer-provided health insurance. An increase of $1,323 more in income taxes for the average American family. This new tax would affect the 158 million Americans who are insured through their employer.

It will cost the average American worker an additional $110 a month in taxes out of the blue.

This comes from the Kaiser Foundation evaluation of the McCain and Barack Obama health plans.
It says McCain would “reform the tax code to eliminate the exclusion of the value of health insurance plans offered by employers from workers’ taxable income.”

The value of the typical plan provided by an employer to a family is $12,106, of which the employer pays $8,824, and the worker pays the remaining $3,282. The median household income is $44,389, which places most American families in the 15 percent income tax bracket.

McCain wants to add the employer’s cost — an additional $8,824 — to that middle class family’s income, then tax it. The hit to the average family is 15 percent of the McCain-added income — $1,323 more in income taxes.

This new tax would affect the 158 million Americans who are insured through their employer."

While speaking at the home of supporters, Irene and Chris Korge, Obama also had sharp criticism for both George Bush and John McCain’s response to this week’s financial crisis. Obama accused Bush of being absent, saying that there has been a “vacuum” of leadership from the White House. “Here we have the greatest crisis probably since 9/11 and our president was absent.”

He went on to link McCain to the Bush Administration, charging him with having to borrow ideas from Bush and Karl Rove because he doesn’t have his own.

I started phone-banking last week, and I've been doing a couple of hours a day since then. Today I called a bunch of voters in Pennsylvania, and had long conversations with five undecided voters.First of all, all of the undecided voters I talked to like Palin. They like her a lot more than they like McCain. They are compelled by her energy and her looks and her demeanor. A couple were pro-life, and McCain's selection of Palin had turned them from "leaning Obama" to "undecided."

BUT, by far the MOST important issue for all of them is the economy.

These people are disgusted by oil company profits, disgusted by high gas prices, disgusted that relatives of theirs are losing their jobs and unable to find new ones. They KNOW that the system is unfair, that corporations are bleeding this country dry while they are suffering.

When I spoke to them about Obama's tax plan (the elimination of income tax for many seniors, the tax breaks for middle-class people and the increase for corporations and the rich) - EVERY UNDECIDED VOTER I TALKED TO WENT FROM UNDECIDED TO LEANING OBAMA.

I can't say it strongly enough: from my non-scientific sample, attacking Palin will get us exactly 0 votes. Getting the word out about Obama's economic policies will win us this election.These people don't want to hear us rip anyone apart. They want to know that Obama has a plan.

And I applaud them for it, really. I even found myself doing the old switcheroo, gritting my teeth and praising palin: "sure, she's attractive, she's got a lot of energy -- of course, the vice president doesn't decide any policy and doesn't really have an active role in making decisions. It's going to be McCain's government, not hers. And that means it's the same old Bush cronies in for another four years."

Another argument also seemed to work well.

One voter said that the experience factor affected her. She parroted back the "a vote for obama is a gamble" trope. Which I countered with "well, those guys have had 8 years to run the country, and the economy is in shambles. I'm ready for some new ideas, and Obama is the guy who's got them."

My personal feeling was that these undecided voters are a little confused - torn between their emotional approval of Palin's personality on the one side, and on the other, their fundamental agreement with Obama on the issues.I believe when it comes down to it on Nov. 4th, these voters and voters like them will get real and vote issues rather than personalities.

BUT WE HAVE TO MAKE THE CASE.
EVERY DAY.
OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
ECONOMY ECONOMY ECONOMY

I used "solutions to real problems" phrases again and again----

"practical," "getting down to real work," and "solving our real problems."

It worked great, and I felt STRONG saying it.

Proof--the BEST way to convert undecided voters! & my own experiences

The Democratic National Committee has done a scientific experiment studying the various ways of increasing voter turnout--

robocalls
personal calls
mailings
multiple mailings
neighbor to neighbor contact.

All methods except one generated only a 1 or 2% increase in voter participation. The ONE METHOD that increased voter participation the most, 12%, was neighbors knocking on neighbors doors. Howard Dean said that if you knocked on your neighbors door, talked to them, and went back again, that would do more to help elect Obama than anything else.Voters who are still making up their minds want to hear from their neighbors, their friends, their family members, someone from their community -- not an organizer or someone from the other side of town.
The message is to get on board the "Neighbor to Neighbor" Program-

Please don't get too distracted w/people who just don't get it. There are more than enough people to elect Barack Obama but we have to find them all and get them out to vote in November. (What I've learned in my own neighborhood)--

If I'm talking to a working mother or a man who tells me both he and his wife have jobs, I also leave the

"Women's Economic Security" flyer

because it shows how Obama understands their challenges and is specific in a simple, easy-to-remember way all the changes he will make that will make their lives better, for them AND their children. I like this flyer because it covers EVERY major domesticissue--healthcare, tax cuts, education, equal pay, higher pay...all in a short,easy-to-remember list format.

If I could only have one flyer, THIS would bethe one I want. It's biographical without using words but policy-driven.Since women are most often the ones writing the checks every month, they especiallyappreciate the details on this flyer--

OK, that's it...just those 2 flyers.

One more thing about that second flyer I've noticed: women 9 times out of 10 say something like, "Awwww, that's such a sweet picture. His mother was so pretty." Some say, "I bet his mother would be so proud of him." They seem to connect on an EMOTIONAL level. They seem almost surprised,in a good way. Remember these are UNDECIDED voters, this may be the first time they've seen or heard about his mother. If they connect tohim on an emotional level, I feel my work is done, because the more undecideds I talk with, the more I'm convinced they are going to vote ontheir gut feeling, not with their head.

Apparently I'm not alone--

Mudcat Saunders, political consultant, author credited with playing an important role in the election of Mark Warner and Jim Webb in Virginia, says it best--

"You know, the first thing I've got to say is if Barack Obama gets through the culture, he wins. If he doesn't, he's going to lose. It's that simple. What's left out there now are undecided voters. Most of them are working class, white people. I don't think the issues reign right now. I think it's--I agree with James Carville. It's all about Barack Obama. If he can get through the culture and he can soften himself in doing that, he'll be fine."

Occasionally I get a feeling a voter may agree with him on policy, butdoesn't trust him. Then I just ask if they have any questions about hisbackground in general. Undecideds are sometimes walking around with false impressions in their heads but are afraid to admit it Sometimes they ask; sometimes they don't. Either way, I just leave this flyer that asks and answers all those questions in a POSITIVE way, without mentioning a negative rumor. As you can see, instead of answering each smear in the negative, the flyer...sent by the AFL-CIO to its members...instead poses questions that can be answered positively. In this fashion, the flyer is reinforcing who Barack Obama actually is instead of who Barack Obama is not.-

Senior citizens (and women) are by far the most reliable voting block.Please be sure to take along your DVDs and/or DVD players to show video footage to reinforce your McCain and Obama issues and to showcase Obama's life. Short video clips of Hillary's endorsement and of the Unity event would go a long way. As would McCain's 'psychological' video and his "social security is a disgrace' comment. An area where you can hold constructive sessions is in Subsidized housing complexes
for Seniors and the Disabled. They all usually have a large room for meetings where they serve

a much larger demographic than assisted living facilities, but they are also important.

Some thoughts:

They were NOT aware that McCain voted against Medicare Part D or that he missed the key vote on Medicare recently to ensure they could keep their doctors. Seniors tend to go tothe same doctor all of their lives and it is traumatic to them if they have to go to another.
They also were not aware that McCain made the statement that Social Security was a disgrace and does not want to give them their "paltry" yearly increase.
They were not aware that McCain receives $1,930 a month in Social Security even though he calls it a disgrace. They were shocked.

You need to focus on areas that impact the lives of Seniors. Their medicine and their
Social Security concerns and the huge payment they make every single month on their
Medicare premium.

If not for the work of the Democrats and AARP, they would never have received their much-needed stimulus check. THEY, the elderly, are the ones who put it immediately back into the economy by buying things they needed that they couldn't have afforded without that check. Speak about the additional Stimulus check that Obama wants to do.

Talk about the REAL Barack Obama, not the one the Republicans want them to know. Talk about his life story. --

They do not know his grandfather fought in World War II or that his
grandmother worked on an assembly line during the war. These are things Seniors applaud as they lived through it.
I asked them a particular question: "What do you know about Barack Obama?". Many gave some of the smear 'facts' that are false. It is important to tell them so and correct their misconceptions. They loved getting all the info on Barack and were truly surprised to hear his family history.They thought he went to a Muslim school and that frightened them. If you have the video on Barack's family, and especially the one where his sister spoke in Florida the real Barack Obama. (Senior housing complexes usually have TV and DVD players or you can bring a DVD player to hook up to their TV.
A lot of seniors in New York were big Hillary fans, so it is key if you meet senior Hillary fans to sway them to Obama by explaining to them Hillary has endorsed Barack. The ones I talked to did not know this vital piece of information.
Healthcare is extremely important to them. So discussion on this issue would be important. Discuss the differences between McCain and Obama's plans.

They like to give their opinions so be prepared to be patient as they each speak. Ask them
for their input and ask them what they want to see addressed concerning the economy.

Food prices are hitting them hard.
Not a lot of them have cars but those that do are leaving them in the parking lot because they can't afford on their Social Security to buy gas.

Forum, attendees and swag:

Arrange to serve refreshments. Nothing big, but they do enjoy a snack.
They also love Ice Cream socials. Sponsoring one at a housing complex would bring in the crowd. But you should clearly state that it is sponsored by your group for Obama. Seniors don't like to be misled into attending a political meeting. You could say for example: "Lehigh Valley for Obama proudly sponsors an Ice Cream Social and Barack Obama informational meeting" something like that, word it as you like.
Another thing that would be a big hit would be a one-day Food Bank sponsored by "name of group" where they can pick up canned goods, breads, etc. The facility where I visit the elderly has daily bread deliveries and they ALL show up. They tend to go without so they can buy their medicines.
If a complex you want to visit is in a town that has a Democratic club, invite them, if the mayor is Democratic, invite them. Seniors like to meet their local officials. Combine it with any local Democratic official who is running for election or re-election this year so they can get to meet the candidate and you can advertise it as such. This helps not only Barack Obama but also "down-ticket" candidates which is what Barack is attempting to do along with Dean.
Freebies: They love freebies. Stickers, pins, posters, anything. Stickers are the cheapest. Also ask local candidates for their handouts or buttons etc to hand out. Hand out any Obama flyers you have or if you have a local campaign office, ask them for some stuff for Seniors.

The elderly are more concerned with the economy and medical care than Iraq
unless they have grandchildren serving.

Another place to consider: The local Mental Health Association meetings. They are usually
attended by many consumers, including Iraq veterans. A good place to focus on Barack's Mental
Health plans, especially for the military.

This is too important to go unanswered; WE have to take responsibility--

Tell "THE TRUTH ABOUT TAXES"...McCain scaring working families--

EVERYDAY, in every city he speaks, McCain not only claims that Obama will raise everyone's taxes, he says Obama's tax proposal would raise rates on those who make as little as $32,000 a year. In a year where the economy is the number one issue to most undecided voters, we cannot afford ANY VOTER not to know the truth--

"If you are a family making $250,000 or less, I will not raise your taxes," Obama said. "Not your income tax. Not your payroll tax, not your capital gains tax. Not any tax. I will cut your taxes."

This is too important to go unanswered, I took an informal poll in my neighborhood, and even most of Obama supporters were unsure what his tax policy was...undecided voters thought just what they hear on the street or on Fox news.It's time we take responsibility for at least our neighbors, our friends and coworkers to know the truth about taxes.

This is a great program to help us win this November. All you do is log in to MyBO (my.barackobama.com) and click on "STATES" and then "FLORIDA." Click the "NEIGHBOR to NEIGHBOR" button and sign up. They will help you print out a walk list of 20 undecided voters who live near you. All you have to do is knock on each person's door and ask them where they stand and record their responses so we can get them out to vote in November if they are a strong supporter, try to persuade them further if they are undecided or just leave them alone if they are not supporting.

You don't have to do it all at once. You can do it an hour at a time in the evenings or whenever you get some free time. If someone isn't home, just come back another time until you have talked to all 20 people on your list. You can input your data at any time, you don't have to wait until you get to all 20 people.

The next time you log in and click on the "NEIGHBOR to NEIGHBOR" button, you will see a button labeled "Report Voter Contacts" at the top of the screen. Just click on that button and report your data for each person. And then, please sign up for more contacts if you can.

Please don't get too distracted people who just don't get it. There are more than enough people to elect Barack Obama but we have to find them all and get them out to vote in November. This program is a great way to get it done. Please encourage your family and friends to work in their neighborhood as well and pass this email on to them.

Why Voter's Registration and turn out in GA is very important

"In the coming weeks, we will be building our movement for change in
Georgia because we believe that Georgia voters deserve to hear what is at stake
in this election," Obama spokeswoman Amy Brundage said. Those efforts
included training 250 volunteers in Atlanta on Saturday to boost voter
registration programs.

Over the past two decades, Democrats in Georgia have believed they needed to
win 90 percent of the black vote and about 37 percent of the white vote to win
statewide. That assumes African-Americans make up 25 percent of the total
electorate casting ballots, as they did in the 2004 presidential election.
About 72 percent of all registered black voters cast a ballot that year.

But Obama has changed the math. Since 2004, more than 400,000 Georgians have
been added to the voter rolls and about 160,000 of them are African-American,
compared to 150,000 whites, according to data from the Georgia Secretary of
State.

Enthusiasm for Obama, especially among black voters, has been massive. If
African-American turnout exceeds 72 percent, as many believe it could, that
would lower the percentage of the white vote Obama needs to win here.

Finally, there is the Bob Barr effect. Barr is the former Republican
congressman from Georgia who is now the Libertarian Party candidate for
president. A poll by the Atlanta-based media company Insider Advantage in May
showed Barr getting 8 percent of the vote in Georgia, compared to 45 percent
for McCain and 35 percent for Obama. That was, however, before either Barr or
Obama secured their parties' nominations.Barr is working to raise money and
awareness of his campaign to become a credible threat to McCain. Insider
Advantage CEO Matt Towery has said Barr's potential share of the vote is
enough to make Georgia "competitive."

Some national news and political organizations are also beginning to include
Georgia in their list of battleground states.

Puerto Rico Primary Emergency‏

Yesterday, Carla Mays sent an e-mail blast concerning the Obama campaign
in Puerto Rico. As you might've noticed, the tone of that e-mail sounded
urgent. That's because the situation is urgent.

Puerto Rico has 63 delegates -- more than Maryland or West Virginia -- and
the island tends to vote in landslides. Right now, that voting tendency is
favoring HRC. If Obama loses under the current vote estimate, it will be
hard and painful. As Carla already mentioned, HRC will receive almost all
of the island's delegates, plus 1.5 million popular votes. This will be a
major boost to her claims that she is more electable when this
nominating process goes to the convention.

Anyone who thinks the nomination process is all sewed up mathematically
would be well advised to check out the following NY Times article from
today's paper:

A quick read shows that talk of Hillary withdrawing has now shifted to talk
of when Hillary *or* Obama withdraws. This according to Howard Dean.

With all the negativity that's been triangulating in on Obama -- Rev.
Wright, terrorists from '68, the "bitter" comment, and all else the attack
machinery can bring to bear -- the reality of superdelegates backing HRC, on
the grounds that she is more electable, is becoming more tangible. A big
win in Puerto Rico will give her the ammunition to say that she not only
commands the female vote and the white working-class vote, but also the
Latino vote.

Carla and everyone at TEAM DELIVER wants to make sure that this does not
happen. But the fight for votes in Puerto Rico will not be an easy one.
HRC has been spending LOTS of money down there, especially on canvassers
who are paid about $10 an hour (a fortune in Puerto Rico where many live
under the poverty line). Since HRC is a NY senator, she's tapping into the
large Puerto Rican population there and sending down Puerto Ricans to stump
for her. Finally, most of the population of Puerto Rico knows almost
nothing about Obama, but are favorable towards HRC because they know her as the
wife of an ex-President.

The Obama campaign is, unfortunately, off to a late start in Puerto Rico.
Right now, there are only about 8 Obama organizers on the ground. And they
are short on everything they need to mount a campaign there. They need more
manpower and election materials (hats, pins, shirts, signage, you name it).
They also need Spanish-fluent phone bankers from the mainland who can call
Puerto Rico. They are also collecting donations of frequent flyer points and hotel points,
and looking for sponsors to get Obama volunteers into this fight.
And we have until June 1st to do it, the day of Puerto Rico's primary.

WHAT WE CAN DO RIGHT NOW:

* Please spread the word among Obama volunteers about this very real campaign crisis.

* Spanish-fluent phone bankers should divert their energies to Puerto Rico
as soon as possible, making every Sunday from now until the primary a
priority calling day (as this is the best day to reach people at home).

* Volunteers (Spanish fluent) who have the time and would like to go to
Puerto Rico for a least a week should e-mail me at djordan-benel@att.net .
I will forward your name to Carla and try to get you a sponsor for your ticket.

* Donations of airfare, travel and hotel points, and car rental sponsorships are all welcome.

Obama would enact a comprehensive plan to help bring an end to the foreclosure crisis that threatens millions of families. Obama supports efforts to create a new FHA Housing Security Program to provide significant incentives and guarantees for lenders to buy out mortgages that exceed the value of homes and convert them into stable 30-year fixed-rate mortgages that homeowners can afford. This is a responsible plan designed to help responsible homeowners without rewarding borrowers or investors who helped create the problem.

Obama would couple this plan with a direct interest-rate subsidy for low-and middle-income borrowers patterned on the mortgage interest deduction used by high-income itemizers, as well as with comprehensive credit counseling, additional aid for loan workouts and reform of the bankruptcy code.

Obama is now calling for a second stimulus package to help hardworking families and strengthen our middle class: making sure that we get money into the pockets of people who need it and invest in sustainable job growth, giving substantial permanent tax relief to seniors and working people --up to $1,000 per working family This would include extending unemployment benefits, helping those make ends meet while they're out of work, and make sure they're still spending money so we can keep the wheels of our economy turning.

Obama's called for a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank that will invest $60 billion over ten years and generate nearly two million new jobs - many of them in the construction industry that's suffered during this housing crisis. And that's why he's proposed investing $150 billion in our green energy sector over the next ten years. This won't just help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and it won't just help save this planet for our children. It will also create up to five million new jobs - and those are jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced.

Obama wiill work to insure that a housing crisis like this does not happen again by installing responsible oversight of credit markets that has been lacking -- on mortgages, but also on credit cards, which threaten to be the next version of the mortgage crisis. It also means increasing people's savings so they have something to fall back on; enacting his long-run savings program would give every worker in America a portable pension savings account.

As the Youth Vote Organizer for Temple University, I am very
excited to see that some are starting to realize how

VOTER REGISTRATION TIPS & TROUBLESHOOTER:

THE MOST COMMON ERRORS:

1. applicant fails to check one or more of the boxes at the TOP of the form,

2. registration form is not signed,

3. registration form is illegible.

Getting Mrs. Clinton

I think we've reached a signal point in the campaign. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. You either understand who she is, or not. And if you don't, after 16 years of watching Clintonian dramas, you probably never will.

That's what the Bosnia story was about. Her fictions about dodging bullets on the tarmac -- and we have to hope they were lies, because if they weren't, if she thought what she was saying was true, we are in worse trouble than we thought -- either confirmed what you already knew (she lies as a matter of strategy, or, as William Safire said in 1996, by nature) or revealed in an unforgettable way (videotape! Smiling girl in pigtails offering flowers!) what you feared (that she lies more than is humanly usual, even politically usual.

But either you get it now or you never will.

That's the importance of the Bosnia tape.

Many in the press get it, to their dismay, and it makes them uncomfortable, for it sours life to have a person whose character you feel you cannot admire play such a large daily role in your work. But I think it's fair to say of the establishment media at this point that it is well populated by people who feel such a lack of faith in Mrs. Clinton's words and ways that it amounts to an aversion. They are offended by how she and her staff operate. They try hard to be fair. They constantly have to police themselves.

Not that her staff isn't policing them too. Mrs. Clinton's people are heavy-handed in that area, letting producers and correspondents know they're watching, weighing, may have to take this higher. There's too much of this in politics, but Hillary's campaign takes it to a new level.

It's not only the press. It's what I get as I walk around New York, which used to be thick with her people. I went to a Hillary fund-raiser at Hunter College about a month ago, paying for a seat in the balcony and being ushered up to fill the more expensive section on the floor, so frantic were they to fill seats.

I sat next to a woman, a New York Democrat who'd been for Hillary from the beginning and still was. She was here. But, she said, "It doesn't seem to be working." She shrugged, not like a brokenhearted person but a practical person who'd missed all the signs of something coming. She wasn't mad at the voters. But she was no longer so taken by the woman who soon took the stage and enacted joy.

The other day a bookseller told me he'd been reading the opinion pages of the papers and noting the anti-Hillary feeling. Two weeks ago he realized he wasn't for her anymore. It wasn't one incident, just an accumulation of things. His experience tracks this week's Wall Street Journal/NBC poll showing Mrs. Clinton's disapproval numbers have risen to the highest level ever in the campaign, her highest in fact in seven years.

You'd think she'd pivot back to showing a likable side, chatting with women, weeping, wearing the bright yellows and reds that are thought to appeal to her core following, older women. Well, she's doing that. Yet at the same time, her campaign reveals new levels of thuggishness, though that's the wrong word, for thugs are often effective. This is mere heavy-handedness.

On Wednesday a group of Mrs. Clinton's top donors sent a letter to the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, warning her in language that they no doubt thought subtle but that reflected a kind of incompetent menace, that her statements on the presidential campaign may result in less money for Democratic candidates for the House. Ms. Pelosi had said that in her view the superdelegates should support the presidential candidate who wins the most pledged delegates in state contests. The letter urged her to "clarify" her position, which is "clearly untenable" and "runs counter" to the superdelegates' right to make "an informed, individual decision" about "who would be the party's strongest nominee." The signers, noting their past and huge financial support, suggested that Ms. Pelosi "reflect" on her comments and amend them to reflect "a more open view."

Barack Obama's campaign called it inappropriate and said Mrs. Clinton should "reject the insinuation." But why would she? All she has now is bluster. Her supporters put their threat in a letter, not in a private meeting. By threatening Ms. Pelosi publicly, they robbed her of room to maneuver. She has to defy them or back down. She has always struck me as rather grittier than her chic suits, high heels and unhidden enthusiasm may suggest. We'll see.

What, really, is Mrs. Clinton doing? She is having the worst case of cognitive dissonance in the history of modern politics. She cannot come up with a credible, realistic path to the nomination. She can't trace the line from "this moment's difficulties" to "my triumphant end." But she cannot admit to herself that she can lose. Because Clintons don't lose. She can't figure out how to win, and she can't accept the idea of not winning. She cannot accept that this nobody from nowhere could have beaten her, quietly and silently, every day. (She cannot accept that she still doesn't know how he did it!)

She is concussed. But she is a scrapper, a fighter, and she's doing what she knows how to do: scrap and fight. Only harder. So that she ups the ante every day. She helped Ireland achieve peace. She tried to stop Nafta. She's been a leader for 35 years. She landed in Bosnia under siege and bravely dodged bullets. It was as if she'd watched the movie "Wag the Dog," with its fake footage of a terrified refugee woman running frantically from mortar fire, and found it not a cautionary tale about manipulation and politics, but an inspiration.

What struck me as the best commentary on the Bosnia story came from a poster called GI Joe who wrote in to a news blog: "Actually Mrs. Clinton was too modest. I was there and saw it all. When Mrs. Clinton got off the plane the tarmac came under mortar and machine gun fire. I was blown off my tank and exposed to enemy fire. Mrs. Clinton without regard to her own safety dragged me to safety, jumped on the tank and opened fire, killing 50 of the enemy." Soon a suicide bomber appeared, but Mrs. Clinton stopped the guards from opening fire. "She talked to the man in his own language and got him [to] surrender. She found that he had suffered terribly as a result of policies of George Bush. She defused the bomb vest herself." Then she turned to his wounds. "She stopped my bleeding and saved my life. Chelsea donated the blood."

Made me laugh. It was like the voice of the people answering back. This guy knows that what Mrs. Clinton said is sort of crazy. He seems to know her reputation for untruths. He seemed to be saying, "I get it."

Barack Obama's "Economic Crisis Plan" flyer; plz email, copy, distribute

To solve the current crisis, Barack Obama would immediately take three steps, addressing the fact that the troubles ultimately result from the squeeze on ordinary Americans in the "real" economy.

First, he would enact a comprehensive plan to help bring an end to the foreclosure crisis that threatens millions of families. Obama supports efforts to create a new FHA Housing Security Program to provide significant incentives and guarantees for lenders to buy out mortgages that exceed the value of homes and convert them into stable 30-year fixed-rate mortgages that homeowners can afford. This is a responsible plan designed to help responsible homeowners without rewarding borrowers or investors who helped create the problem by gambling ecklessly or committing fraud, and it asks both sides to contribute to the solution.

Obama would couple this plan with a direct interest-rate subsidy for low-and middle-income borrowers patterned on the mortgage interest deduction now predominantly used by high-income itemizers, as well as with comprehensive credit counseling, additional aid for loan workouts and reform of the bankruptcy code.

A housing security program would help not just the families and neighborhoods threatened by foreclosure. It would also remove the darkest cloud hanging over the financial system. Resolving this issue would ease the financial crisis and get credit markets lending again.

Second, Obama would make sure that we get money into the pockets of people who need it and invest in sustainable job growth. This would include extending unemployment benefits, getting money to hard-pressed states so they don't have to slash key services, and giving substantial permanent tax relief to seniors and working people --up to $1,000 per working family -- to help Americans who are struggling in this economy.

It also means enacting Obama's infrastructure plan to fund our desperate need for such investment, an alternative energy and "green" jobs development program, and a job skills program to improve our country's workforce. These can help prevent potentially devastating job losses in manufacturing and construction especially.

Obama's third priority is making sure that a housing crisis like this does not happen again. That means ensuring that we don't reward people -- whether borrowers, lenders or corporate executives -- for bad behavior in the mortgage market. It means installing the responsible oversight of credit markets that has been lacking -- on mortgages, yes, but also on credit cards, which threaten to metastasize into the next version of the mortgage crisis. It also means increasing people's savings so they have something to fall back on when things go wrong; enacting his long-run savings program would give virtually every worker in America a portable pension savings account.

The country's economy and financial system face some serious challenges. Barack Obama is confident we can meet these challenges the way America always has--by coming together to ensure that our economy works for every working American.

The Right Choice?

The conservative case for Barack Obama

Barack Obama is no conservative. Yet if he wins the Democratic
nomination, come November principled conservatives may well find
themselves voting for the senator from Illinois. Given the alternatives
—and the state of the conservative movement—they could do worse. . . .

. . . his election will constitute something approaching a
definitive judgment of the Iraq War. As such, his ascent to the
presidency will implicitly call into question the habits and
expectations that propelled the United States into that war in the
first place. Matters hitherto consigned to the political margin will
become subject to close examination. Here, rather than in Obama’s age
or race, lies the possibility of his being a truly transformative
presidency.

. . .electing John McCain guarantees the perpetuation of war. The
nation’s heedless march toward empire will continue. So, too,
inevitably, will its embrace of Leviathan. Whether snoozing in front
of their TVs or cheering on the troops, the American people will
remain oblivious to the fate that awaits them.

For conservatives, Obama represents a sliver of hope. McCain
represents none at all. The choice turns out to be an easy one.
