I think it is very simple. I was with a woman this week who is in her sixties. She told me that she has voted Republican her entire life and this year she is voting for Obama. Her reason; John McCain is too erratic and too much of a hot head and Sarah Palin is completely unqualified. I think many "Obamacons" simply love this country more than they do their ideology.

Another adds:

Larison suggests that Obama is an unthinkable option for a real conservative. This is simply wrong. Many of the Obamacons are not just deciding it's more important to punish McCain; they actually believe Obama will result in a government as small or smaller than that of McCain, that he will pursue a more conservative agenda in foreign affairs, and that his social policy, based on a combination of libertarian values and personal morality will also be more conservative overall.

Part of the Obamacon phenomenon is certainly a rejection of McCain. But this is missing something. Some pro-lifers, for example, are beginning to embrace the idea that the best way to reduce abortions is to flood society with life-positive options, including more money for low-income health care. This has especially taken hold among Catholic pro-lifers as opposed to evangelicals because there is a deep and strong tradition for social welfare in the Catholic world.
Obama embodies this type of thinking to his soul. I think, and I could be projecting here a bit, that the reason for the size of the Obamacon phenomenon is that some conservatives in the libertarian, realist, and religious categories are acting on the sense that Obama is one of them. It's not about any one policy. It's that when they hear him talk, they recognize their own kind of thinking. He is reasoned, thoughtful, temperate, ethical. While they may worry about this policy or that, they have a gut feeling that they trust him to be making the decisions.

That certainly captures his appeal to me.

Republican President George W. Bush has not been a conservative at all, either in domestic policy or in foreign policy. He invaded Iraq on the basis of abstract theory, the very thing Burke warned against. Bush aimed to turn Iraq into a democracy, “a beacon of liberty in the Middle East,” as he explained in a radio address in April 2006.
I do not recall any “conservative” publication mentioning those now memorable words “Sunni,” “Shia,” or “Kurds.” Burke would have been appalled at the blindness to history and to social facts that characterized the writing of those so-called conservatives.
Obama did understand.

In his now famous 2002 speech, while he was still a state senator in Illinois, he said: “I know that a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, of undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without international support will fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than the best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al Qaeda. I’m not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.”
Burke would have agreed entirely, and admired the cogency of so few words. And one thing I know is that both Nixon and Reagan would have agreed. Both were prudential and successful conservatives. But all the organs of the conservative movement followed Bush over the cliff—as did John McCain.

I voted yesterday at the Montgomery County, Ohio, board of elections building in downtown Dayton and it will an event I will remember for a long time. It took 3.5 hours of waiting in three separate areas until my number was called. I was number 23XX and the queue was moving in groups of ten. When my number was called and I was sitting at the desk of one of the poll volunteers I had a few minutes to ask her impressions. She said that the day before some 3,000 people came out to vote but she was shocked by Saturday's turnout. She went on to say that the Red Cross has donated cots so the polling volunteers have something to sleep on, so I guess they're staying overnight in the building.
Then to top it off, when I get to a makeshift booth I was next to a blind guy who kept asking where the lever was to make his selection. The lady with him explained that there is no lever and then he responded that this is the first time he has voted in 30 years. By the time I finished, I met back with my wife. She said the election officials were handing out numbers in the 8000 range.

And this white middle-aged banker who voted for Bush discovered what's actually happening:

Instead of walking the tree-lined streets near our home, my wife and I were instructed to canvass a housing project. A middle-aged white couple with clipboards could not look more out of place in this predominantly black neighborhood. We knocked on doors and voices from behind carefully locked doors shouted, "Who is it?" "We're from the Obama campaign," we'd answer.
And just like that doors opened and folks with wide smiles came out on the porch to talk.

Grandmothers kept one hand on their grandchildren and made sure they had all the information they needed for their son or daughter to vote for the first time. Young people came to the door rubbing sleep from their eyes to find out where they could vote early, to make sure their vote got counted. We knocked on every door we could find and checked off every name on our list. We did our job, but Obama may not have been the one who got the most out of the day's work.

Hillsborough GOP chief denounced for forwarding e-mail

TAMPA — Just days before Americans vote in an election with the first black presidential nominee, the head of the Hillsborough County Republican Party sent an e-mail warning members of "the threat" of "carloads of black Obama supporters coming from the inner city to cast their votes."

The e-mail, sent Wednesday, prompted charges of racism from local GOP members and a call for David Storck, chairman of the Hillsborough Republican Party, to resign.

By Thursday afternoon, it brought condemnation from state party leaders and John McCain's campaign.

The e-mail, written in all capital letters by volunteer Ron Whitley, 72, was forwarded by Storck to about 400 party members.

It begins with the words "The Threat," and, referring to an early voting site in Temple Terrace, reads in part: "I see carloads of black Obama supporters coming from the inner city to cast their votes for Obama. This is their chance to get a black president and they seem to care little that he is at minimum, socialist, and probably Marxist in his core beliefs. After all, he is black — no experience or accomplishments — but he is black."

Near the end of the e-mail, Whitley writes: "There is only one way to stop Obama: Vote!!!"

Storck prefaced his forwarding of the e-mail by saying: "If you think it can help us win this election, please pass it on."

Curtis Stokes, a member of the Hillsborough County GOP and president of the Hillsborough chapter of the NAACP, called the e-mail racist.

"They're trying to get John McCain elected by putting fear in the minds of white people. You know, 'Do you really want to be governed by a black guy?' " Stokes said. "David Storck's not a good representative of the Republican Party if that's what he's sending out. He needs to resign."

The state Republican Party blasted the e-mail.

"The Republican Party of Florida strongly condemns this hateful rhetoric, which is not in any way representative of Florida Republicans," said state party spokeswoman Katherine Gordon.

The McCain campaign also rejected the tactic.

"John McCain has been very clear from the beginning that he rejects the type of politics that degrades our civics. This type of divisive rhetoric has no place in this election. The issues and policy differences between the two candidates are too great and our challenges many," said campaign spokesman Mario Diaz.

Storck, who owns a nursery in east Hillsborough County, initially defended the e-mail.

"This is an elderly gentleman, and he was simply making a comment that there are carloads of people being brought from the inner city to vote, and we need to get off our butts and vote, too," he said.

Whitley could not be reached for comment Thursday.

It was supposed to be an internal e-mail, Storck said, and someone releasing it to the media was an attempt to "sabotage the Republican Party."

Later, however, Storck said he did not endorse the statement. Thursday afternoon, he sent a followup e-mail offering his "sincere apology."

"I believe in a strong and diverse Republican Party and that everyone should exercise their right to vote and support the candidate which reflects their values," he wrote.

Hillsborough Republican Party member April Schiff said when she received the first e-mail from Storck she was stunned.

"My initial reaction was, 'Oh, my God, why are we doing this?' " she said. "I understand volunteers and that people do things when they get emotionally involved in these elections. There's no reason to spread it around."

Joe Robinson, a black Republican, said such views are the reason he resigned from the local party, but are not surprising in a county that recently made national news because of a giant Confederate flag erected on private property.

"Hillsborough County's got some racist attitudes," he said.

The threat: Here in Temple Terrace, FL our Republican HQ is one block away from our library, which is an early voting site.

I see carloads of black Obama supporters coming from the inner city to cast their votes for Obama. This is their chance to get a black president and they seem to care little that he is at minimum, socialist, and probably Marxist in his core beliefs. After all, he is black — no experience or accomplishments — but he is black. I also see young college students and their professors from USF parking their cars with the prominent 'Obama' bumper stickers. The students are enthusiastic to be voting in a historic election where there may be the first black president.

The college professors, particularly in the social sciences, for the most part have little or no experience in the work-a-day world.

Their life experience has been mostly academic under the tutelage of liberal college professors. For them, a little socialism and anti-Americanism is a good thing. After all, if terrorists attack us, we must have done something to provoke them.

You and I understand the dangers the potential Obama presidency presents to our way of life. The suppression of free speech, introducing union intimidation in the workplace, increased dangers to our nation by terrorists, cutting our defense budget by 25%, turning our tax system into a national welfare system and economic policies that could drive us into a depression.

There is only one way to stop Obama: Vote!!!

Obama is advertising on TV asking all his supporters to take a day off work or class to vote. Contact personally everyone you know reminding them to vote and how important it is. Send this message to everyone on your email list that wants to defeat Obama. Your email is an effective tool if you use it wisely and promptly. You can reach 10,000,000 people in the next seven days if as few as ten people on your list take prompt action and ten people on their list and ten people on their list … you get the idea.

Obama is leading in all of them: 18 in New Hampshire, 12 in Nevada and Pennsylvania, 9 in Colorado, 7 in Virginia and Ohio, and 2 in Florida and North Carolina. Poll was conducted Wednesday through Sunday.

Plus Quinnipiac has three polls out this morning showing Obama ahead by 12 in Pennsylvania, 9 in Ohio and 2 in Florida.

RICHMOND

A phony State Board of Elections flier advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5 is being circulated in several Hampton Roads localities, according to state elections officials.

In fact, Election Day, for voters of all political stripes, remains Nov. 4.

The somewhat official-looking flier - it features the state board logo and the state seal - is dated Oct. 24 and indicates that "an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the following (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process."

The four-paragraph flier concludes with: "We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but felt this was the only way to ensure fairness to the complete electorial process."

No emergency action has been taken by the General Assembly. It is not in session and lacks the authority to change the date of a federal election.

State Board of Election officials today said they are aware of the flier but disavowed any connection to it.

"It's not even on our letterhead; they just copied the logo from our Web site," said agency staffer Ryan Enright, noting the flier has been forwarded to State Police for investigation as a possible incident of voter intimidation.

Election officials did not specify in which Hampton Roads localities the flier had been spotted.

State Police are aware of the complaint and are looking into it, said spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

In 2007, the General Assembly passed a law making it a Class 1 misdemeanor to knowingly communicate false information to registered voters about the date, time and place of the election or voters' precincts, polling places or voter registration statuses in order to impede their voting. The measure is one of the few such deceptive voting practice laws in the country, according to the watchdog group Common Cause.

Go read the original talk that Obama gave on NPR and see if it says anything even faintly similar to the truncated quotes about to be used by McCain. I mean: come on. Here's the headline:

"2001 Obama: Tragedy That 'Redistribution Of Wealth" Not Pursued By Supreme Court"

Here's what it's based on: the "tragedy," in Obama's telling, is that the civil rights movement was too court-focused. He was making a case against using courts to implement broad social goals - which is, last time I checked, the conservative position. The actual quote in full:

"If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement, and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to vest formal rights in previously dispossessed peoples, so that I would now have the right to vote, I would now be able to sit at a lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it I’d be okay."
"But," Obama said, "The Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society. And to that extent as radical as I think people tried to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical. It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, as least as it's been interpreted, and Warren Court interpreted in the same way that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties, says what the states can't do to you, says what the federal government can't do to you, but it doesn't say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf. And that hasn’t shifted."
Obama said "one of the, I think, the tragedies of the civil rights movement, was because the civil rights movement became so court focused, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change, and in some ways we still stuffer from that."

So Obama was arguing that the Constitution protects negative liberties and that the civil rights movement was too court-focused to make any difference in addressing income inequality, as opposed to formal constitutional rights. So it seems to me that this statement is actually a conservative one about the limits of judicial activism.

Is this really all McCain has left?

Thank you all so much for the early voting stories, and if you early voted for McCain, please send in those stories as well. (Between the enthusiasm gap and the blog reader demographic, these e-mails tilt disproportionately to Obama backers.)

This one is from a Cincinnati reader, and its conclusion gets at a bit of an X-factor in this race: Can Obama play a history card? David Axelrod said recently that John McCain is on the "wrong side of history." Can Obama use a perception that his win is both inevitable and historic to tip voters his way? Or will that backfire?

Anyway, here's the story:

Upon arriving at the Hamilton County Board of Elections in Cincinnati to vote early today I happened upon some friends of my mother's — three small, elderly Jewish women. They were quite upset as they were being refused admitance to the polling location due to their Obama T-Shirts, hats and buttons. Apparently you cannot wear Obama/McCain gear into polling locations here in Ohio.... They were practically on the verge of tears.

After a minute or two of this a huge man (6'5", 300 lbs easy) wearing a Dale Earnhardt jacket and Bengal's baseball cap left the voting line, came up to us and introduced himself as Mike. He told us he had overheard our conversation and asked if the ladies would like to borrow his jacket to put over their t-shirts so they could go in and vote. The ladies quickly agreed. As long as I live I will never forget the image of these 80-plus-year-old Jewish ladies walking into the polling location wearing a huge Dale Earnhardt racing jacket that came over their hands and down to their knees!

Mike patiently waited for each woman to cast thier vote, accepted thier many thanks and then got back in line (I saved him a place while he was helping out the ladies). When Mike got back in line I asked him if he was an Obama supporter. He said that he was not, but that he couldn't stand to see those ladies so upset. I thanked him for being a gentleman in a time of bitter partisanship and wished him well.

After I voted I walked out to the street to find my mother's friends surrouding our new friend Mike — they were laughing and having a great time. I joined them and soon learned that Mike had changed his mind in the polling booth and ended up voting for Obama. When I asked him why he changed his mind at the last minute, he explained that while he was waiting for his jacket he got into a conversation with one of the ladies who had explained how the Jewish community, and she, had worked side by side with the black community during the civil rights movements of the '60s, and that this vote was the culmination of those personal and community efforts so many years ago. That this election for her was more than just a vote ... but a chance at history.

Mike looked at me and said, "Obama's going to win, and I didn't want to tell my grandchildren some day that I had an opportunity to vote for the first black president, but I missed my chance at history and voted for the other guy."

Smerconish: I've asked him about this specific issue on three separate occasions. That's not his position.What he said was this: if there was actionable intelligence that Al Queda was in the area, we would strike. What's wrong with that?
John McCain calls this naïve, but what he proposes is more of the same previous eight years of failed policy. During this time, we've propped up the dictator Musharraf with money intended to fight terrorism, and he turned around and used our cash to shore up his forces against India. In the meantime, Al Queda has flourished. I think Obama has the right take on this.
If you want to talk about immature, I think singing 'bomb, bomb, bomb Iran' shows a total lack of maturity on these serious issues.

The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. . . . It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

Notice how he puts it: "not very unreasonable."

In my view, still lamentable. But also not a rigid rule, since real conservatives do not believe in rigid rules. My view - again - is that the obvious problems of the US economy right now are not the same as they were in the 1970s. I would prefer a candidate who would cut entitlements and defense to a candidate who raised taxes on the successful. But such a candidate is not running. McCain's budget proposals would add more to the debt than Obama's. And if we are going to spend enough to avoid a great depression and if we are to provide some stimulus to encourage energy innovation and if we are going to provide greater access to healthcare insurance, then the money has to come from somewhere.

In an ideal world, I prefer Ron Paul's economics to Barack Obama's. But Obama will have to do.

We are looking for people to canvass in New Albany, OH so we can identify supporters, volunteers, non-supporters (so we can cross them off the lists), and undecided.
