Senator Tom Daschle Gets out the Vote

Our work today and tomorrow will decide the outcome of this election.

Knowing this, the Campaign for Change RV made one final swing through the state to fire up the troops and sign up new ones to hit the streets, dial the phones, crunch the data, drive the vans, and check the polls. Along this trip through Fort Collins, Loveland, Berthoud, Longmont, Louisville, and Lafayette were Former Governor Roy Romer and Senator Ken Salazar were joined today by Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.

The crowds everywhere were stunning. As Former Governor Romer addressed the crowds in Loveland and Longmont he noted that things were much different from when he was in office. There were so many more volunteers in the offices and staging locations than he had ever seen volunteer in these areas of the state.

Senator Daschle is one of the longest supporters of Barack's bid for the Presidency. He told the crowds that what he saw in an up-and-coming US Senator four years ago has spread to millions across the country, and that with hard work, this can be spread even further:

"As you make these connections, I know you understand the historic nature of this election. I would argue that this election ranks up there with 1860 and 1932 as two of the most transformational elections of our time. I don't care if you live to be 100. We're going to look back on the year 2008 and we are going to say we were part of that effort. That was the year we changed America. That was the year we gave America new hope."

Early Vote comes to an end

Yesterday saw the end of early voting in Colorado. Over a million people have cast their ballot, and all over the country, turnout records are shattering.

Just down the street from our state headquarters was a polling place with a line of voters out the door and supporters waving people in down the street.

Michelle voted the day early vote locations opened, but as of this morning her son hadn't. She told us about their conversation:

"This is the last day! He's 30 so I can't punish him, but he said 'Mom, I promise I will.'"

Maggie was with Michelle. Both are long time volunteers, Maggie canvassing over 1,000 doors and hosting several house parties. She, like Michelle, voted as early as possible and devoted her free time to getting others to the polls.

"God forbid something should happen on the fourth, machines break down, you forget your ID, it would be horrible.

Less than three days left. It's time. We need you and it's the most important thing in the world right now."

Robert Redford Comes to Aurora

Robert Redford is no stranger to West, attending the University of Colorado at Boulder, working at Estes Park, and founding the Sundance Film Festival in central Utah.

Today he came to Aurora to speak to people about the importance of early voting and why Barack Obama and Mark Udall should be elected.

"We need somebody who is intelligent, compassionate and has moral fiber. This is a man who, when other people play partisanship like a sport, he doesn't think like that, he doesn't work like that, and he doesn't live like that.

Look what we've lost. We can get it back with the team we have."

He introduced Mark Udall, a longtime fan of Robert's movies, including "The Candidate."

"McKay is standing there and says 'What do we do now?' Well what we're going to do is work on the green energy economy, we're going to help our veterans, we're going to help working people, we're going to pass the children's health insurance program, and we're going to end the war in Iraq honorably and responsibly. We're going to end it."

At 81, Ruth Ellen has been a lifelong Republican, but this year is supporting the Democratic ticket.

"I'm so ashamed of my party, especially the last four years. So I drive my little green Prius and drive all the old folks to the polls to early vote."

The Campaign for Change RV comes to Commerce City

On Wednesday, the Campaign for Change RV headed to Commerce City. On board were Lt. Governor Barbara O'Brien, Congressman Ed Perlmutter, and Texas State Representative Rafael Anchia.

It was retail politics at its finest as they made stops and spoke to voters at grocery stores, restaurants, and community centers. They made sure to tell everyone they spoke to where their early vote location is located.

Barack Makes Phone Calls in Brighton

After Sunday's record shattering crowds in Denver cleared out and the cheers in Ft. Collins died down, Barack decided he was not yet done with our state for the day. He went to our field office in Brighton and thanked the volunteers and staff for the work they are doing and pressed them to keep working hard through election day.

Robert was one of the volunteers there.

He said:

"I'm a native of Brighton. I've been around here for seventy-one years now. I've been a life long Democrat... Obama, to me, is the all-American person. He started at the bottom and rose all the way to the top."

Dozens of volunteers joined Barack as he made phone calls to voters letting them know they can vote early through Friday and that their help is needed all weekend and on Election Day.

Charles Meets Barack

After Charles met Senator Obama on Sunday before the historic rally in Denver, he said it was one of the most memorable experiences of his life.

That's saying something, as Charles was born in 1922.

He's seen the Great Depression, a world war, served in the Korean War, and has volunteered for campaigns since Franklin D. Roosevelt, but it's the energy of this campaign that has excited this lifelong Democrat more than any others.

He sees similarities between Barack and the last candidate he volunteered for: Bill Clinton.

"I like anyone who's come from a hard life because they understand people that are having a hard life. Barack Obama, like President Clinton, they really understand the people and lives we're going through with."

Charles volunteers in our Boulder office almost every day, greeting people at the door making sure they sign in, and always has a story to tell folks with an open ear.

Michelle Obama to hold Early Vote For Change Rally in Colorado Springs

DENVER, CO – Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama, will return to Colorado on Tuesday, October 28, to host an Early Vote for Change Rally in Colorado Springs. Early voting in Colorado started Monday and runs through October 31.

Mrs. Obama’s most recent visit to Colorado was earlier this month for a voter registration rally at Farrand Field in Boulder, which drew a reported record crowd for that venue of 9,700 people.

Northern Colorado greets the Early Vote Tour

The Early Vote Tour wrapped up this evening after visiting Steamboat Springs, Walden, Hot Sulphur Springs, and Granby.

People that have never seen a Democratic Presidential campaign came out in droves, packing diners and sidewalks to greet Senator Ken Salazar, Governor Roy Romer, and Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak as they spread the word that they can vote for Barack Obama right now.

In Granby, we spoke to Felicia about what this campaign means to her:

"I have three children. One is a Wall Streeter, one is a teacher, and one is a fast food manager. White, pink, and blue collar workers. They are all for Obama and as much as anything I'm doing this for them. Obama speaks to all of them.

I've never been so inspired by a candidate and I haven't been this involved with a campaign since Bobby Kennedy in 1968."

At the end of every speech, the local field organizer told everyone how important it was that they volunteer. With just 10 days left until Election Day, and a beautiful weekend ahead of us, we need you to volunteer. Find your local field office and join your neighbors as you knock on some doors and call members of your community.

When Pizza Meets Politics

Our last stop on the Early Vote Tour Thursday was Idaho Springs. Taking a walk down Miner Street, Governor Romer, Commissioner Stulp, and Senator Salazar visited two Idaho Springs establishments: Tommyknocker's Brewery and BeauJo's Pizza.

The Democrats of Clear Creek County came out in droves to BeauJo's Pizza to hear from the surrogates, eat some unbeatable pizza, as well as make phone calls to voters and let them know they can vote now, either through early voting or voting by mail.

Joe was making phone calls when we arrived. He talked to us about the great turnout at the restaurant.

It's very heartening. It's indicative of how things are going. We have dozens of unpaid volunteers taking time to make calls to total strangers! I'm fifty years old and my first election was Ford versus Carter. I'm a student of history and this election is as important as Hoover versus Franklin Roosevelt. People here clearly believe that Barack is the answer.

Early Vote Tour comes to Golden

The Campaign for Change RV is back out on the trail! The RV is coming to towns all over Colorado letting people know they can vote NOW.

As we headed up into the mountains we stopped at our Jefferson County Headquarters in Golden. Volunteers were there making phone calls and preparing for canvasses this coming weekend. The weather is supposed to be great and they are hoping for a great crowd.

We talked with Arica, one of the volunteers in the office. She came all the way from Orange County, California and has taken a month off of her job to help get Barack elected.

He represents the America I was taught America was supposed to be. I was raised that way but I never saw it. I never got to be a part of something big.

I told my husband that if he gets the nomination I would go work for his campaign. He said, "sure sure," but I told him, "I need to know that you're hearing me. If he gets the nomination, I'm going to work for him."

Senator Salazar was quick to lead by example and made some phone calls to voters in Jefferson County.

Seniors Roundtable in Fort Collins

With all the turmoil in the economy over the last month, there is no clearer time to highlight the need to protect Social Security and not leave it to the whims of Wall Street. This was a major topic of conversation at the Fort Collins Senior Center on Friday morning.

State Senator Bob Bacon joined a packed room of seniors to discuss Senator Obama's plan to protect Social Security, reform our health care system to make insurance affordable, and reform our tax policy so people on fixed income aren't overburdened by taxes.

"There are enormous problems every four to eight years. Some are of our own making, some we have no control over. We need someone who will tell us the truth because fixing these problems won't be easy."

Betty lives in The Worthington Independent Living in Fort Collins and volunteers at the Campaign for Change office every week. She laughed as she talked about her volunteer experience.

"I've been working every Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00. I've been so pleased with the number of young people coming in. It's so important that they take an interest. They need to save their country."

Senator Bacon took questions from the audience afterwards. Topics discussed ranged from Social Security and Medicare to Iraq and college affordability. You can find where Barack stands on all these issues by visiting our issues page.

Video: Colorado Rural Tour

After over a dozen stops and hundreds of supporters came to show their support, the first Colorado Rural Tour came to a close late Friday night.

Agriculture Commissioner John Stulp, former Governor Roy Romer, Governor Bill Ritter, Senator Ken Salazar, Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, as well as local elected officials and candidates came out to share their support for Senator Obama with the people of their communities. From issues of support for the Farm Bill, to energy independence, to the economic crunch that Main St. has been dealing with for years, they let their fellow Coloradans know that Senator Obama is the only candidate that will be fighting for them in the White House.

Friday wrapped up the Campaign for Change Rural Tour. The RV worked (and sometimes strained) its way up the Western Slope back towards Denver.

The towns of Olathe, Hotchkiss, Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Edwards, and finally Dillon all got to see the Campaign for Change RV roll through and hear its passengers, Agriculture Commissioner John Stulp, Former Governor Roy Romer, and US Senator Ken Salazar tell them why Senator Obama is the best choice for rural America

On Thursday the Campaign for Change Rural Tour continued across Southern Colorado. Joining the tour for the day was US Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota. As a member of the Agriculture Committee with Senator Salazar as well as being from a state with a large agriculture community, she was right at home on Highway 50 visiting Pueblo, Cañon City, Salida, Gunnison, and Montrose.

Many of these communities have never seen a Democratic Presidential campaign, but it's a testiment to Senator Obama and the organization he and the citizens of Colorado have built together that they are reaching into every county in the state.

VP Debate Watch Parties from all over Colorado

Thursday night, millions of people all over the country gathered around their TV sets to watch the Vice Presidential debate. What they saw in Joe Biden was what Barack saw in him when he made his decision to add Joe to the ticket: a man with deep understanding of the struggles of working families, a Senator with decades of experience dealing with crises all over the world, and a committed public servant who loves his country and wants to give everyone the same opportunities he and Barack had.

House parties were held all over Colorado and neighbors gathered together to watch and discuss what they saw. Amber was in downtown Denver. Her partner is currently serving in Iraq and she heard a clear difference between the two campaigns tonight:

"I agreed with Senator Biden. I feel he had a better articulated plan. His plan was clear about how we're going to get out and the importance of being transparent with the people about what our expectations are. "

Thursday night's debate shattered TV ratings and Americans saw a clear choice.

John McCain and Sarah Palin want four more years of a war that is draining the country of lives, money, and respect, four more years of a broken health care system, and four more years of economic policies that have left our communities and our financial markets in shambles.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden will end this war and bring our troops home to the care they deserve, Barack and Joe will create a health care system in this country that all can take part in, and Barack and Joe will get the economy back on its feet by giving tax cuts to the middle class famlies who need it and who are, as Joe said, "The economic engine of America..."

Knocking for Obama/Biden in America's Biggest Battleground

Last week we brought you Kitty and Dan, a wife and husband who spent their anniversary canvassing for Barack in their neighborhood. Today wasn't Ginger and John's anniversary, but with the announcement of Joe Biden as Barack's running mate and the sun shining on a gorgeous summer day, it was enough of an occasion to pound the pavement for change.

Last Tuesday, USA Today put Arapahoe County at the top of their "swing county" list, meaning it is the most closely contested county in the twelve battleground states. Knowing this, Ginger and John just couldn't sit idly by. They arrived at our Arapahoe County office early this morning, got fired up with fellow supporters from their town and took to the streets asking people who they were supporting and making sure their voter registration was up to date.

We followed them around their neighborhood today as they engaged the people they knew and those they hadn't met yet. Here's a video:

Energy Roundtable in Golden

This past Thursday, Colorado for Change held a roundtable discussion with residents of Golden, local business leaders, and renewable energy experts to discuss this country's energy future and what is being done locally to fuel the growth of the alternative energy industry here in Colorado.

Moderated by Colorado State Senator Chris Romer, Chairman of the 2007 State Senate Select Committee on Renewable Energy, the panel consisted of Jeff Probst, the CEO of Blue Sun Biodiesel, Kim Jordan, the CEO of Fort Collins’ New Belgium Brewing Company, and Brad Collins, the Executive Director of the American Solar Energy Society.

The discussion focused on Senator Obama’s plan to offer short term relief to families struggling with rising costs and make the long term investments our country needs to achieve energy independence. You can read more about Senator Obama's plan for energy independence on our issues page.

Kim Jordan, the CEO of Fort Collins’ New Belgium Brewing Company, highlighted her company’s commitment to renewable energy, conservation, and on-site energy production to show how a successful “green company” can make environmentally conscious decisions and still be a competitive force in the market.

“Going forward, the business sector and government must come together to provide the necessary incentives to move to a green economy. With a sustained and shared effort by our government, our businesses and the American people, we can confront this national challenge and build a clean energy economy that benefits everyone.”

Senator Obama knows we cannot drill our way out of this problem. Community leaders like Kim Jordan and the other members of the panel are all over this country and will be the driving force of this economic and environmental revolution.

Canvassing and Cake in Colorado Springs

On August 4th, 1961 Barack Obama was born. 47 years later he has millions of people across the country working their hearts out to make him the next President of the United States.

In Colorado Springs, volunteers gave the gift of canvassing. People were in and out of the office all afternoon and into the evening getting their assignments and taking the campaign's message to their neighbors.

We followed two volunteers, Alex and Robert, as they traversed the trail.

Both live in Colorado Springs and they know the reputation their city has for being a Republican stronghold. Things are changing this year and Robert sees it:

"Colorado Springs is a beautiful place to live. This year it's a battleground for Mr. Obama. I remember watching the '92 election, the '96 election, the 2000 and 2004 elections, and now this one. I'm basically following in my parents' footsteps by campaigning. They campaigned hard for Clinton twice, and they did what they could for Gore and Kerry. This election means more to me than any of the other campaigns I've been a part of."

It's the drive and passion that makes this campaign different from the past. That spirit, that fire in the belly of the American people has been stoked and we owe to the man whose birthday we celebrated on Monday: Barack Obama.

Solutions for Colorado Comes to to Denver

Our series of forums, "Solutions for Colorado" continued last weekend. Neighbors gathered at the Southwest Improvement Council building on Denver's southwest side to discuss the current housing and mortgage crisis.

This event's panel was made up of several Colorado community leaders and elected officials. Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, Denver Mayor John Hinkenlooper, New West Side Economic Development Executive Director Veronica Barela, State Representative Mark Ferrandino, and Denver City Councilman Paul Lopez,

Councilman Lopez represents the 3rd District of Denver and spoke of how these issues effect him:

"I was born and raised in this neighborhood, so for those who haven't been to Westwood, bienvenidos! I can tell you as someone who grew up in this neighborhood, was a student in this neighborhood, as a homeowner in this neighborhood, and also the representative, I've been able to see this neighborhood through thick and thin. I have never seen it in the condition that it is in now. And it hurts me."

"It makes me sad because this is my home and also the home of many people and many families. And to have four more years of Bush-McCain policy would just devestate this neighborhood. We cannot afford not to elect Barack Obama the next President of the United States."

The most important part of any "Solutions for Colorado" event is the part where groups are formed and the panelists sit with the participants and listen to the issues they experience and how they believe these problems can be solved.

Historic July 4th Celebration

Across the state today, Obama volunteers and fellows took every opportunity they could to reach out to voters and register new ones. Here in Denver there were numerous events celebrating the birth of our nation, and the campaign had a presence at many of them – spreading a message of patriotism by getting people actively involved in the democratic process.

An “Old-Fashioned July 4th Celebration” at Four Mile Historic Park was filled reenactments of important moments in the country’s history and talented actors portraying notable American figures.

Another Illinois politician and former president, Abraham Lincoln spent a little time talking to us.

We asked him how he felt about another Illinoisan running for our nation’s highest office. The former told us that no matter what state a candidate came from they should be a person of character – he chose not to endorse at this time.

A Head Start on the Day of Action

Happy Independence Day!

We got a head start on this holiday weekend yesterday in Aurora. A small band of patriots met in Del Rio Park to register voters at a free concert put on by local swing band The Hot Tomatoes.

While there, I met up with Elaine who moved to Colorado eight years ago from this blogger's hometown of Rochester, NY. As we reminisced about lake effect snow we discussed Senator Obama and her reasons for changing her registration.

"My friends keep bugging me. They're all supporting Barack. We don't want war, we want regular people to be taken care of. Single parents need help, the homeless need help...I could go on and on!"

She told me how she feels horrible that she gets health care but so many don't, including a good friend of hers. She said the time was now to change her registration to Colorado and get involved with this movement to change our country.

Voter Registration at Warped Tour in Denver

In the search for new voters, this campaign leaves no stone unturned. Every year, the Vans Warped Tour attracts thousands of people in almost every state in the country. Warped Tour is a multi-stage concert with dozens of bands, and this year the Obama campaign is along for the ride.

Volunteers in every city on the tour show up early in the morning armed with registration forms and hundreds are collected every day. This past Sunday, the traveling show came to the Mile High Stadium in Denver, CO.

Colorado Unites for Change

The message of this campaign has always been about bringing people together. Now, as we start working on the general election, people across the country are holding Unite for Change events to spread the message of unity and bringing about change from the bottom up.

One of these events took place in Eagle County, where Peggy, a volunteer who had been actively involved in the February caucus, invited her neighbors over for brunch to help reach out to new supporters and help grow the movement for change.

After some conversation, blueberry pancakes and bacon, Peggy sat down with a group of neighbors, people from nearby counties, and even a couple out-of-state supporters to talk about what issues are important to them and how their involvement in the campaign and their community can change America.

Peggy shared her story:

I was like so many others, where you think ‘I go and I vote for president and I’m really just trying to decide who I don’t want more than who I want.’ And until this man, Barack Obama, came along, that’s what it was for me. I was very cynical; I didn’t think there was any hope for this country. And then I thought about my three grand children and I realized they’re going to have fewer opportunities in life -- for education, for living a good life, for work opportunities; unless I care about it and I get involved.

Many of the people who came to the meeting were new to politics or had not been involved for a number of years. Others had supported different candidates during the caucus, but all of them were excited to talk about the campaign and how they wanted to engage their communities and build our grassroots movement.

Later yesterday evening, another Unite for Change event took place in Evergreen, where Katherine invited people from the surrounding area to her house, where they talked about policy and what led them to get involved in Senator Obama’s campaign.

Canvass Weekend Has Begun!

The big push is on! Volunteers crowded into our Portland office and offices around the state to kick off the final weekend of canvassing before the Oregon Primary.

It's a beautiful day to canvass and we need your help, so stop by one of our local offices. The only way to win the Oregon Primary is by getting ballots turned in. Find out where you can turn them in using our lookup tool.

Many of our brothers and sisters from the United Food and Commercial Workers and Service Employees International Union were present. They understand that the best way to bring about change is by banding together and convincing those around you that the way things are, aren't the way things need to be.

Take action today. If you're in Oregon, you can stop by your nearest campaign office and grab a walk packet or two. And now matter where you are, you can make calls to voters in Oregon and help supporters find their Ballot Drop location today. It only takes a minute to get started, and the Oregon calling campaign runs until 9:00 PM Pacific Time.

Good morning, Oregon! The temperature in Portland today is expected to be in the upper 90's and I attribute that to all of Oregon getting fired up about this weekend! Senator Obama will be joining us in Rosenburg on Saturday morning, and Sunday brings him to Portland and Pendleton. Details of the events are right above the blog. If you live in these areas, tell all your undecided friends, family, and neighbors to join you there.

Tomorrow morning begins our last big weekend canvass. It's our last chance to make sure people are turning their ballots in. We have several resources available to help everyone cast their ballots.

The deadline to mail in your ballot has passed. If you need to know where to bring your ballot, use our lookup tool.
Sign up for a canvass shift. Now that your ballot is in, make sure everyone in your neighborhood has theirs in as well.
If you're on a college campus, feel free to use our Yes We Van! service. This shuttle will take you from campus to your ballot drop location.

Dulé Hill and Max Kennedy at PSU

Few people in this country have more campaign experience than Max Kennedy. He was just three years old when his father, Robert Kennedy, ran for President. Yesterday at Portland State University he joined actor Dulé Hill, best known for playing the role of Charles Young on this blogger's favorite show, The West Wing.

An overflow crowd of students and others gathered in the Smith Memorial Student Union to hear Dulé and Max say why they support Senator Obama for President. Here's a video:

The Boys of Bend

This past weekend Senator Obama wrapped up his trip through Oregon in Bend. The residents were more than excited to see a leading Presidential candidate in their area for the first time in twenty years. Even more exciting is the chance for Oregon to make history next week. With enough hard work over the next seven days, Oregon can put Senator Obama over the finish line and give him enough delegates to clinch the pledged delegate majority!

In attendance at the town hall were Larry, Wayne, David, and Jim, all from Central Oregon. They stopped by our office in Bend after the event and discussed why they feel Senator Obama is the candidate to bring real change to Washington D.C.

We're one week away from the voting deadline! We'll win in Oregon the same way we won around the country: knocking on doors, making phone calls, talking with our neighbors, friends, and family about Senator Obama's vision of unity and his plan to turn this country around.

Today throughout the state, Oregon for Obama hosted "Mommas for Obama" canvasses. Here in Portland, Obama’s Mommas and their families were treated to canvass kick off speeches by former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts and former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus. Volunteers, organizers, and their families all came out on this holiday to continue to spread Barack’s message of change and unity, by pounding the pavement and going door to door in their communities.

Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) Endorses Obama

What better time to roll out a couple more endorsements than as we welcome Senator Obama back to the Beaver State!

WASHINGTON (AP) - The movement of Democratic superdelegates to presidential hopeful Barack Obama gained steam Friday, with endorsements expected from two more congressmen.

Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said the Illinois senator plans to receive the endorsement of Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon an event Friday in his homestate. Oregon holds it's primary on May 20.

While polling in the Oregon has been sparse, Obama is believed to hold a significant advantage over New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. With DeFazio, he will have the endorsement of three of the state's four Democratic House members. Reps. Earl Blumenauer and David Wu earlier endorsed Obama, while Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Rep. Darlene Hooley have endorsed Clinton.

In New Jersey, Donald Payne—a black congressman who had been backing Clinton for the nomination—is switching his support to Obama, Pfeiffer confirmed.

Clinton won the New Jersey primary on Feb. 5.

"After careful consideration, I have reached the conclusion that Barack Obama can best bring about the change that our country so desperately wants and needs," Payne told The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J. It was "one of the most difficult decisions I have made," Payne said. "I've really been mulling it over for quite a while."

Obama's endorsements from superdelegates has picked sharply since Tuesday, when he soundly defeated Clinton in North Carolina's primary and held her to a narrow victory in Indiana.

With a commanding victory in North Carolina and a very very very close contest in Indiana, our supporters in both of those states as well as all Americans who want to put an end to the divisive politics of the the past should be proud.

Our work is not done, Oregon! There are doors to knock and minds to inspire. Tonight gives you a strong argument for why Senator Obama is the best candidate in this race. The talking heads said Barack Obama would get crushed in Indiana because of an alleged problem with working class voters. But the reality is that Obama erased Clinton’s big lead in Indiana precisely by connecting with working people. They know that his plans for a middle class tax cut and affordable universal health care are what is going to help them most and they were not fooled by the McCain-Clinton gas tax “holiday” gimmick.

Here are the best ways to help:

If you haven't voted, vote! Find your ballot drop location.
Become an Oregon Community Organizer. These organizers are the backbone of our campaign.
Host a volunteer. We have great volunteers who make the drive or flight to Oregon from other states and they need a place to sleep.

Saleem was one of the first volunteers to become involved in our Pittsburgh office. He has a tenacity that is unmatched by most, especially while out canvassing. He has no problems going up to complete strangers and getting them involved in the campaign.

His major frustration with Washington is the partisan bickering that prevents reform. He said:

Health care is a major issue, our economy is in trouble, we have a housing collapse, global warming...I believe the reason these have not been solved is because it will take a bipartisan effort...I think that Barack Obama is the best person to bring people together and get moving again."

Governor Sebelius kicks off GOTV in Pittsburgh

GOTV weekend is here! We've already kicked off our first day of canvassing all across Pennsylvania.

Here in Pittsburgh, to take the strain off of our central office, we operate several staging locations around the city to kick off our canvasses. One of these locations is Brillobox, a bar in the neighborhood of Lawrenceville. Volunteers have been in and out all day with papers filled with responses from their canvass, ready to pick up new ones.

To kick things off in Lawrenceville this morning was Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Here's a video:

Countdown to Change: Pennsylvania Volunteers

Stephanie moved to Pittsburgh over twenty years ago. It only took one visit to the city for her to fall in love with it and its neighborhoods.

To call Stephanie an active supporter of Senator Obama would be an understatement. As early as December 2007 she was meeting with fellow supporters in Western Pennsylvania to organize the petition drive to get Senator Obama on the ballot for Pennsylvania's primary, and by the time the first staffers showed up, there was already a team of volunteers waiting in Stephanie's living room for the first organizational meetings.

Her biggest problem with the way Washington has been working is the lack of respect for those with differing opinions. She feels that once an honest dialogue between opinions begins, "those differences are going to make us stronger...they're going to cause us to evaluate each others positions and come up with a solution that is stronger." The main reason she supports Senator Obama is his track record of finding the common ground with people who have differing opinions.

We sat down with Stephanie last week and here's what she had to say:

Bonnie from Waynesburg

Her mailbox says "Prosperity, PA" but Bonnie feels like that's the only place she sees prosperity in her corner of the world. Waynesburg and Greene County, Pennsylvania are prime examples of places in this country that have been hurt by the economic situations that those in power have promised to fix but failed to deliver.

An early supporter of Senator Obama, Bonnie says he has, "a total understanding of the things that are going on in this country that need to be fixed. I think Senator Obama can help people at the local government level to work harder because I think he will inspire them as much as he inspires Joe Public to work harder."

Doug from Bellefonte, Pennsylvania has been involved in his local community in a number of ways for decades, even running for local office. As a former newspaper reporter, he tended towards the role of observer rather than participant in the political process at the start of this primary season, but the more he heard and read about Barack, the more he liked, and the more he's gotten involved in his campaign. He says:

For me, Obama touches something deep inside, a sense of hope and possibility that has been dormant for a long, long time. I don't believe that there's any such thing as false hope, and furthermore I know that it is an act of raw courage to be hopeful in the face of the forces against it.

Student Debate at the University of Pittsburgh

Earlier this week, the University of Pittsburgh College Democrats hosted a forum where students could ask questions to representatives from both Students for Obama and Students for Hillary.

The topics ranged from health care to Iraq to the outsourcing of jobs, and gave undecided students a great opportunity to make a decision about who to support in an election that people of all ages are realizing will have a huge effect on their generation, as well as future generations.

Mark Hamill at Point Park University

Mark Hamill's first opportunity to vote for President came in 1972 and he got involved with George McGovern, a candidate and a campaign that he believed in. "Here was a guy who felt exactly the way I felt about the war." Thirty six years later, with another war keeping our soldiers abroad and an economy in trouble, he's found another candidate that he believes in: Barack Obama.

Mark, of course, is best known for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars Trilogy. Recalling a conversation he had with director George Lucas over the title of the original Star Wars film "A New Hope" he brought up the analogy that Luke was, "the new hope in the fantasy world and Barack is the new hope in the real world."

David's first vote for President was going to be for Robert Kennedy. Since 1968 he has never been "so motivated about ANY candidate...until now."

Since then, David has lived, taught, and worked in several different countries, as well as served in the US Navy. He moved back to his hometown of Johnstown, PA to take care of his aging parents. He's a man who has contributed to his country and society, but still sees unnecessary hardship.

"I get my primary health care from the VA, because I'm a disabled vet. But what if I'm in an accident? I make $38,000 a year. A single emergency room visit could take my whole annual salary. People who have no such worries are the ones making policy decisions for those who do."

In Senator Obama, he sees an honesty that he thinks has been lacking in Washington. Being "direct and honest," about the tough issues and giving answers that aren't always popular are what he feels we need in a President.

We sat down with David a few days ago and let him tell his story.

For her whole life, Sue has known Democratic politics. You could say it's a family thing. Her father was a second generation steelworker and her mother was a school teacher whose father was a Teamster truck driver. When Sue was born, her mother left work to take care of her.

This ethic of hard work translates to her work on the campaign. Sue is an Obama Team Captain, the head of our neighborhood volunteer teams. They are responsible for being the liaison between the campaign organizer and the team members in that neighborhood. Team Captains chair meetings and create the agenda for those meetings, and offer support and coaching to other members of the team.

Michelle Obama and Teresa Heinz at Carnegie Mellon University

The noise from the crowd rivaled a Tartans victory as Michelle took the stage in the Skibo Gymnasium at Carnegie Mellon University yesterday. Introduced by Teresa Heinz, she captured the crowd's attention by letting them know:

"...I don't care how many news covers I'm on, how many stump speeches I give, or how many times Barack is in front of big crowds. Deep down inside we are working class kids...Just a few years ago we were still in debt for our college education...We did what we thought was right... and with every step we made bringing our skills back to our community, we made less money."

It's that down-to-earth connection that the Obamas have that has captured the attention of this country. Barack and Michelle know the struggles that working class Americans are going through because they are just a few years removed from having student loan bills that are higher than a mortgage. Their upbringing by families that had to work for all they had allows them to relate to the people they meet on the ropelines and give them a sense of hope. A hope that someone's looking out for them in the halls of government.

PA Road to Change: Pittsburghers Waiting in Line

We in the Steel City are used to standing in line on cold mornings. Whether it's the Steelers, the Pirates, or Barack Obama, the people of Pittsburgh are willing to tough it out if it means a good seat. The first person in line said she'd been there since 5:30 in the morning.

Yesterday was the first day of Senator Obama's Road to Change Tour through Pennsylvania and he kicked it off at Soldiers and Sailors Military Museum and Memorial in the heart of Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, home to the University of Pittsburgh. Outside, the line was as diverse as the city of Pittsburgh. There were die-hard supporters and undecideds, parents with children, and people of every background.

Firing up the midnight oil in Corpus Christi

Yesterday we visited our West San Antonio office. Based in a house on W Commerce St. -- it’s right in a neighborhood that usually doesn't receive attention from a national campaign.

People were in and out all day in anticipation of Senator Obama's visit to San Antonio this evening.
Working in the office is Michael. A lifelong San Antonian, he knows from campaigns past that it takes hard work to win.

Senator Obama came to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater last night and got thousands of San Antonians fired up for Tuesday's primary-caucus.

The cheers were deafening all night, especially when he described his plan to make college affordable for every American by offering a $4,000 tax credit per year in return for public or national service.

He also spoke about changing the way politics is conducted in this country. "You won't see me using terrorism as a way to scare up votes," he said, dismissing the politics of fear that has held this country hostage for the last seven years.

Former Texas Governor Mark White Supports Barack Obama

Earlier this week, Former Texas Governor Mark White endorsed Senator Obama's candidacy for President. Governor White served as Governor from 1983 to 1987, before that he was Texas' Attorney General and before that he was Texas' Secretary of State.

While in office, Governor White fought hard for education and health care reform. He led efforts to expand South Texas Hospital to provide comprehensive health services in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and establish the Task Force on Indigent Health Care.

We spoke with Governor White earlier today and asked him why he supports Senator Obama.

"When I listen to Barack Obama I hear an eloquent voice of hope and
inspiration. I also hear the voice of a healer and doer and achiever who
knows how to turn hope into reality.

When I look at Barack Obama I see the future.. I see a man who is turning
the nation around politically. I see a man who has been able to do what no
other politician has done in my lifetime: to unite the American people of
all persuasions -- politically, regionally, racially, ethnically -- behind
a shared purpose. Barack Obama as President will give new meaning to the
words on the seal of the United States, "e pluribus unum," -- "Out of Many,
One."

He is truly America's candidate"

Dallas Stands for Change

Yesterday in Dallas, District Attorney Craig Watkins and President of Independent Texans Linda Curtis made public endorsements of Senator Obama for President.

Linda Curtis said,

"We came to deliver our endorsement today - we had a raging debate in our organization... It is pretty clear to anyone who tries to be objective that Obama is the candidate for Independent Texans right now. He is the person who is speaking to us. He's made it clear that he's building what he calls a majority coalition. And he understands that 42 percent of the electorate now is independent and they must be included."

On Monday. Caroline Kennedy spoke to Texans about why she feels Barack Obama is the best candidate in the race for President of the United States.

Her January 27th New York Times op-ed entitled "A President Like My Father" left a strong impression on the electorate because she rarely involves herself in Presidential politics. Senator Obama's candidacy, however, has that effect on people. Thousands who were previously uninvolved, are now leading their communities towards the American Dream.

In his South Carolina victory speech, Senator Obama said that this campaign had "the most diverse coalition of Americans." This was very evident at the Women for Obama house party held this past weekend by Austin City Councilwoman Sheryl Cole. Every age group, color, and background was in attendance.

Great food was served, great conversations were had, and I'll bet more than a few friendships began between these people over a common goal: to help change this country by mobilizing those around them to get involved and be, as Barack says, "the ones we have been waiting for."

Last night was fantastic. Around 30,000 people came out on a gorgeous night in front of the state capitol to hear Senator Obama speak. People had been lining up since lunchtime and the wait paid off. The crowd stretched for blocks.

If there's one thing Obama supporters do well it's getting together and making some noise for our candidate. All day yesterday, supports of all ages and backgrounds gathered at the University of Texas in Austin to show their support for Senator Obama as he and members of the media attended last night's CNN/Univision debate.

With a plethora of handmade signs and banners, and led by the John H. Reagan High School "Soul Raider" Marching Band and the Double-R Dance Team they took to the campus and showed that Texas is Obama Country.

Over the weekend the Obama for America campaign in Texas demonstrated the ability to quickly grow in strength and depth, launching an ambitious new field program across the state.

Just days before the start of early voting on Tuesday, more than 4,000 Obama precinct captains across Texas were trained this weekend alone. Trainings were conducted in more than 20 communities throughout Texas, including Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Edinburg, Wichita Falls, El Paso, Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, Ft. Worth, Waco, Cedar Hill, Tyler, Sugar Hill, Beaumont, Odessa and Frisco.
In an unrivaled effort to empower supporters, Obama precinct captains were trained to phone bank, canvass, manage data, and reach out to their friends and neighbors to talk to them about Senator Obama's unique ability to bring America together to bring change to Washington.

"The Obama campaign is recruiting and training thousands of precinct captains who will excite their communities and send a message across Texas that Democrats, Republicans and Independents are ready to choose the future over the past and unite America around a common vision for change ," said Josh Earnest, Obama for America Texas Communications Director.

The excitement about Senator Obama's candidacy has driven a dramatic state-wide grassroots campaign:

The Texas Obama for America campaign is planning to open 10 regional offices across Texas with several more satellite offices. This weekend, there were official Obama regional campaign office openings in Austin, San Antonio, Brownsville and today in Houston.
Texas Obama for America has signed up over 38,000 Texans with accounts on the campaign's online organizing tool My.BarackObama.com (including 20,000 since Tuesday, February 12th alone), more than 340 active grassroots volunteer groups have been created online and more than 1,400 Texans have created personal Barack Obama fundraising pages.
Over the weekend, Senator Obama earned the endorsement of the Houston Chronicle, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Senator Obama had previously won the endorsements of the Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman, San Antonio Express-News and El Paso Times.

On Tuesday, Senator Obama will kick off a four-day trip to Texas with stops in Houston and San Antonio. On Wednesday, Senator Obama will visit the Dallas- Fort Worth area before Thursday's debate in Austin. Senator Obama will also campaign in the state on Friday. The trip is an opportunity for Senator Obama to meet with Texans, answer their questions, and share his vision to bring change we can believe in to Washington.

Rafael Anchía: Obama is preaching the politics of hope - not division

State Representative Rafael Anchía wrote an op-ed in yesterday's Dallas Morning News.

His dedication to his family, strong work ethic, opposition to the war in Iraq and deep faith are all qualities that are important to Latino voters. A recently released analysis of Super Tuesday results by the Willie Velasquez Institute shows that Mr. Obama is making important strides among Latino voters, including among late-breaking undecided Latinos.

Austin Mayor Will Wynn Endorses Barack Obama

Wynn cited Obama’s commitment to uniting Americans behind an energy policy that protects our environment and ensures our long-term national security.

“For too long, we’ve allowed old divisions to hold us back,” Wynn said. “Recently I’ve had conversations about energy policy with presidential candidates from both parties, and I believe Senator Obama is the only person who can move us forward on this critical issue.

“Barack Obama gets it. He offers a commitment to confront our energy challenges in ways that will unite our country, help our economy flourish and protect our planet and national security for the next generation and beyond.”

Wynn has chaired the Energy Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors since 2004, and was instrumental in passing energy-efficiency grant legislation as part of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. If fully appropriated, Austin would gain more than $20 million to help fund local efficiency efforts.

“Mayor Wynn has emerged as a national leader on energy policy and I’m honored to have his support,” Obama said. “I don't believe that energy policy is something to bring up only when it’s convenient during a campaign. It's one of the greatest moral challenges of our generation. Our future national security depends on achieving energy independence and it’s an issue that will be front and center when I am president.”

Canvassing in East Los Angeles

The pride of this campaign is its volunteers. People who give their time and energy, asking nothing in return. Just happy they can contribute to a cause they believe in.

California doesn't usually see a campaign like this. A campaign that empowers individual citizens to mobilize and organize those around them. Yesterday, across the state, volunteers took to the streets to inform, educate, and inspire their neighbors and friends on behalf of Senator Obama.

In East Los Angeles, we followed Nancy Meza, a college student, as she walked her community and did the footwork that will help deliver California on Tuesday.

Organizing the Movement: Marshall Ganz

"We are a movement that builds and not destroys," said Cesar Chavez. As an organizer, his life's work was to help ordinary people create a better life for themselves through unionizing, non-violent protest, and political action.

Aiding in this struggle was Marshall Ganz. He worked with Chavez for over sixteen years organizing with the United Farm Workers. Forty years ago he organized a Get Out the Vote campaign for Robert F. Kennedy during the California primary. Through this effort, he was able to help Kennedy win the states highly contested primary.

He sees today a clear comparison between Robert F. Kennedy and Barack Obama...

Last week, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez of the 39th District joined the Movement for Change behind Senator Obama here in California.

Representative Sanchez sat down for a minute to discuss why Barack is the best hope for the change Californians seek, and to encourage all Californians to become a part of this grassroots movement.

"Get out there and work for Obama. It'll be the most fun you've ever had. You'll feel like you're really making a difference in your country. You're going to feel great at the end of it."

With twelve days until the Primary on February 5th, the California campaign is growing at a tremendous rate.

Los Angeles MLK Day Parade

Thousands packed the streets of Los Angeles to celebrate the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Marching bands, community organizations, and elected officials all joined in the march, as well as volunteers and supporters of Senator Obama.

We talked to many people at the parade, and the most common given answer for why they supported Barack Obama was that they wanted change.

Barack Obama is the only candidate that has the ability to bridge this country’s political divide and form a working majority to push forward an agenda that will bring health care to all, new jobs to rural and urban communities, and an end to the war in Iraq.

California Precinct House Party

Barack has stated many times throughout this campaign that real change only happens from the bottom up. It's the central theme of this campaign and it’s being practiced by every day people taking an active role in organizing their communities. It's not something you usually see in a state-wide campaign here in California, but the Obama for America precinct captains are organizing and mobilizing their local communities to get involved with the campaign.

Last Sunday many of of our captains held house parties to reach out to members of their communities and let them know how they could help the campaign. They took part in a conference call with other house parties throughout the state and heard from campaign officials to let them know what the final weeks of the California primary hold.

San Jose Office Opening

The "Capital of Silicon Valley" just got a new resident.

The grand opening of the San Jose office was attended by local elected officials and activists alike and drew a crowd of many, and many honks from supporters driving by.

Most notably, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren of California's 16th District, which includes San Jose, was there to publicly endorse Senator Obama.

Los Angeles Precinct Captain Training

Barack reminds us in his speeches that change in this country happens from the bottom up. Change happens because ordinary citizens stand up and take part, despite their busy lives.

Precinct Captains are the true change agents of this campaign. They are neighborhood leaders who take an active role in organizing and engaging the people who live around them to also be change agents.

Last weekend there was a Precinct Captain training at the Los Angeles headquarters. There were so many people signing up that day that the sessions had to be split into two, and there still weren't enough chairs for everyone! Here's a video of the event.

Palo Alto Office Grand Opening

Residents of Palo Alto came out for the grand opening of their field office and to hear what they need to do to help spread Barack's message of change to their community.

Not even the brisk Iowa winter can keep Matt Tapscott from being fired up and ready to go.

Matt is a precinct captain in Beaverdale, and as Barack met enthusiastic, standing-room-only crowds all across the state today, and as we head into caucus week, Matt organized volunteers in his precinct to hit the streets and delier Barack's message of change we can believe in to his neighbors.

Matt's early decision to support Barack was reinforcd as he watched the organization Barack built across Iowa.

From field organizer to precinct captain to volunteer, communication and support are always available.

Matt and his team knocked on doors all day, finding supporters and undecideds alike. The caucuses may be close, but there's much work yet to do.

The Stand for Change Tour has been incredible these last few days. I’ve been to several events and the people I’ve seen and met who are deciding to support Senator Obama remind me of why I’m doing this. This morning, we posted a short clip of Barack’s speech in Carroll from last night.

Before the rally I had an opportunity to talk with Mary Bruner (she introduced Barack).

Mary said she was a little nervous having to speak in front of all those people, but nothing could stop her from showing her support for Senator Obama.

Originally she was undecided on who she would support – she has always wanted to see a woman in the Oval Office – but it was Senator Obama’s convictions and willingness to share his convictions that led her to support him.

And she told a standing room only crowd at Carroll Middle School exactly that last night. Here’s a video that tells a little bit of her story.

It's been almost fifty years since President Kennedy called on us to "ask what you can do for your country." Slowly since then our drive to help one another with our time and service has diminished. At the same time, costs of college tuition have skyrocketed and the problems of poverty and foreign oil dependence have culminated into a giant barrier to our success as a nation.

We've knocked down barriers before, and this time is no different.

Senator Obama travelled across Iowa last week visiting college campuses [links to blog posts] to promote his plan to reinvigorate not just our country's great national service programs, but also our spirit to serve our country.

Graceland University's Memorial Student Union was packed yesterday with people to hear Barack's wife, Michelle, speak.

Michelle's story of a humble background, a father who embodied the American work ethic, and a life dedicated to public service resonates with every audience she speaks to. She relates the struggles her family went through to the struggles that Barack has gone through to the struggles that average Iowans face. And she says that a Barack Obama presidency won't solve all their problems, but it will give those that are struggling today an easier time reaching their American dream.

"This has been my favorite venue of the campaign," Senator Obama said as he took the stage at the Dunlap Cattle Auction last Saturday. Owned by the Schaben family for almost sixty years, the family has taken this company from its first sale of less than thirty head of cattle, to hosting events like the Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Championship, and the World Livestock Auctioneering Championship, both in 2002.

Senator Obama's discussion with the packed room focused on education, jobs, and how he, like no other candidate, can push an agenda forward that will bring the help rural America, urban America, and everyone in between, needs.

Jon Schaben, one of the auctioneers, presented Barack with some tokens of appreciation: two hats for his daughters Malia and Sasha, a sweatshirt for Michelle, and a jacket for Barack.

When Duffy Lyon sculpted her annual butter cow for the Iowa State Fair in 2006, it was to be her last. After years of making the world-famous butter statue, she was ready to spend more quality time with her husband, Joe. Both still live on their farm in Tama County.

But Senator Obama's message of change for rural America made it impossible for her to hang up her gloves. She wanted to help steer her country back to the right track. So she went to work on a butter "O."

This summer, we spent some time with Duffy and Joe on their farm in Tama. Here's the video.

National Guard Policy in Waterloo, IA

Last Thursday, Senator Obama held a town hall at the Black Hawk County Boys and Girls Club in Waterloo. His focus was how to help our National Guardsmen and women cope with the increased strain of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Earlier this year, more than 600 soldiers in Iowa’s National Guard had their tours in Iraq extended to 16 months, and the families of those soldiers (and soldiers all over the country) are suffering due to these long deployments. Barack understands that supporting those who wear the uniform of the United States is our solemn obligation.

Barack was introduced at this event by Sergeant Ryan Murphy, a Guardsman from Waterloo who recently got back from Iraq. Ryan supports Barack because of the judgment and courage he showed in opposing the Iraq war from the very start. Here’s some video from the event.

In the Iowa Spotlight: Mary, from Shenandoah

We’ve run several Iowa Spotlights over the last few months, where we profile regular Iowans who have decided to support Barack Obama in the caucuses. Today, we’re launching the first in a new series of video profiles.

Our first is Mary, a crafter from Shenandoah. She had never been to a political rally in her life but saw a flyer for a town meeting at a craft show, and her mother encouraged her to come. Mary was moved by her mother's passion for Barack and decided to come and check it out for herself.

She came uncertain, but signed a supporter card before she left. Fall is here and people are starting to make their decisions.

Steaks were grilled and crowds were thrilled at this year's Bob Creech Steak Fry held in Bouton, just west of Des Moines.

Held in honor of former Dallas County Democratic chair Bob Creech, it's the biggest event of the year for Democrats in Dallas County. Senator Obama was represented at the Steak Fry by Iowa State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald.

Along with surrogates for other presidential candidates, Seldon Spencer, a Democratic candidate for Congress in the 4th, also spoke at the Steak Fry.

It was hot on Tuesday in the Waukee fire station, but Iowans came out in droves to see Barack speak. Some of Barack's main points:

When it comes to politics, the "game playing" is over.
When it comes to experience, he's passed bills with sound policy aimed at those who need help the most.
When it comes to foreign policy, he can set the best tone and restore our standing in the world. He will go before the United Nations and say, “America is back. And it’s time for America to lead again.
