Last night I hosted an economic stimulus meeting in West Peoria, IL. I received this email from one of the attendees and with his permission, I'd like to share it with you!He did a much better job summarizing than I could..........and he didn't even take notes! I have made comments throughout this blog adding other opinions that were brought up. Not all of us agreed 100% with every detail. But, unlike the Senate, I'm sure we could have come to a compromise quite easily!! LOL Along with the following info that Harry has shared, as high priorities we discussed community service, education funding and continuing to stay involved, letting our voices be heard and holding our elected officials accountable by sending emails, calling them and watching how they vote!Then spreading the word!
Harry, the author of most of this blog, has great ideas, some of which we'll be sharing with you through events on Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL. I hope each of you will find something of interest that you would like to be a part of! "Hey All,     Your comments/criticisms/recommendations about the economic stimulus spending and tax cuts can be given at the toll free number 1-888-642-4264 or at whitehouse.gov under 'contact us'. (in my words: share your story, how has this affected you, your family and your community)
    14 people attended the house meeting at Gail and Rick Newton's home in West Peoria last night. Some of the recommendations discussed for changing the stimulus bill included:     Increase spending on solar panels and wind turbines to reduce dependency on the dwindling availability of foreign oil. The current plan to double spending on renewable energy is ridiculously small. The current total energy produced by wind and solar is about 3%, doubling it is about 6%. Raising renewables to 75-90% would make the U.S. energy independent, dramatically stimulate the economy with new jobs and the ability to export renewables. There would be proportionate cost savings, energy security, environmental benefits, reduction of greenhouse gases, climate stability, reduction of the likelihood of oil wars, and the improvement of life for future generations. (in my words: This is a great idea and Harry, the author of this blog, knows a lot about this!!)     Increase infrastructure spending and reduce tax cuts. Economist overwhelmingly agree. Currently 58% is allocated for infrastructure and 42% for tax cuts. It is estimated that for every $1 spent on tax cuts, $1.09 is circulated in the economy, for every $1 spent on infrastructure, $1.59 is circulated in the economy. Even a higher rate is circulated with funding for food stamps and extended unemployment benefits, which republicans want to cut. (in my words: This idea is not a unanimous idea. We would agree with more money for infrastructure but not reducing tax cuts because we feel that the tax cuts will help spur the economy from the bottom up!)     Reduce attempts to be bipartisan at the expense of making irrational, ineffective policy choices to appease entrenched republicans, who are still trying to promote 'trickle down economics' with more tax breaks for the corporations and the wealthy (in 2008 the wealthiest 5% became 7% wealthier while 75% of everyone else lost 7%)." (in my words: some of us disagree with the idea of being too bipartisan, mainly because we trust President Obama's judgement. The worry here, is that this will divide the team and cause needless delays.)
    Financial regulation, transparency, and accountability, which includes imprisonment and heavy fines for unethical misuse or fraudulent use of taxpayer bail out money for financial institutions or corporations." (in my words: most of us are not for imprisonment, but we would like to see more regulation and penalties in the way of reimbursing the government for the ghastly way that some of the corporations have spent their government assistance)     Retroactive financial accountability with fines, imprisonment, and repayment for those who have blatantly misused the first $350 billion in tax payer bail out money that was given to financial institutions and corporations before Obama took office. (in my words again:imprisonmnet is not something we take lightly, as a group, and we don't think that we need more laws and our constitution wouldn't allow this!) Harry" I look forward to being in touch with many of you in the next 4 years.We can make a difference

Giving from the Heart continues

Hello fellow Peorians and friends from all of central Illinois.

I wanted to update you on an event that I started a little over 3 weeks ago; Giving from the Heart

This is an ongoing event, every Sunday morning at 8:30am, we head downtown Peoria and take sack lunches, beverages and anything else someone without a place to live might need, ie. blankets, warm socks, warm clothing, any non-perishable food item that doesn't need cooked or opened with a can opener and doesn't require an eating utensil, and backpacks or tote bags.

This is a heartbreaking, yet heartwarming opportunity to do one little thing for those who don't have what we have.

This past Sunday was very special. Some of the people that I've been seeing are starting to talk to me. I even got 2 hugs. This meant a lot to me.

I hope you'll join us one of these Sundays.

There is also a need for this on Mon., Wed. and Thurs. evenings at 6pm. On those days, people who work, yet don't have a place to live, can't check in early enough to receive a dinner. Please let me know if you would be available and interested in helping on those evenings. gail.newtson@gmail.com

event; Giving from the Heart, a heart warming experience

Yesterday, Sun. Jan. 18th, 5 Peorians, met downtown and searched for homeless and/or hungry people in our community. We handed out 35 sack lunches, 48 bottles of water and 3 bags of clothes to those in need. This was our service project for today's National Day of Service called for by our, soon to be, 1st Family.

We met 28 men, 5 women and 2 children in downtown Peoria. It was heartbreaking while it was heartwarming, as well. It was a small deed. But to see their smiles, and hear their words, is an experience that I will not forget, nor will my niece, age 19, and her boyfriend, age 23(who started this project over a year ago), my daughter, age 20 and my 'adopted' granddaughter, age 10. It was a family affair! I am thankful and proud of my family. I wonder where the families of those we met are.

We will continue to try to end hunger one little step at a time. Fellow Peorians, will you join us?

I know that many of you have or will be participating in a service project that is near and dear to your heart. Let me say to you, keep up the good work, don't slow down, continue to spread the word and the love to others. TOGETHER we can "be the change that we've been looking for."

It's not over, though. This is the beginning!

Be ready, stay involved. 'Our journey through all the months of this campaign has challenged all of us. It has made us think about what 'we' can do when we work together. Our voices being heard in America and around the world has brought us to this new America!

Kids for Obama

This campaign has been so exciting! I am so proud of everyone and all the work they have done! I'm especially proud of the young people and kids who are paying such close attention to this historic election and doing whatever they can to make Senator Obama our next President! I'd like to share a few short stories about some of the kids in my life that are making a difference!

My grandson turned 2 yrs old today! He doesn't talk much yet, but he says Hi, Momma, Dadda and Bama! He's been saying Bama longer than Hi! My daughter, his Mom, has an Obama calendar hanging on the wall, so, when he sees Barack on TV, he gets so excited saying "Bama" and pointing to the TV and then the calendar!

My granddaughters watch everything they can about the Senator! Then they call me, "Grandma, did you see Obama on TV?" Then they tell me what they liked about his speech or interview and ask me if I liked it. They talk to their friends, too, and if they don't support Barack, they talk to them about it and then call and tell me all about what they said to convince them that Barack is the best candidate!

My 10 yr old cousin is very convincing with her friends and their families. If they don't support Barack she says, "Do your parents make more than $250,000 a year?" Not too many say yes, but if they do she still tries to convince them to vote for Barack or tell their parents to!

My daughters attend rallies, talk to everyone they know about Barack and have done some canvassing and voter registrations!

It both saddens me and disgusts me that these 2 are using so much anger, fear, hate and lies to divide us at a time when understanding, honesty, unity and courage are what we need. That is what would be best for our country! So, I'm asking them to follow their own 'slogan' and put our country 1st for a change!!

Not to mention the RNC and their robocalls! Unethical and unacceptable!

What would you ask them to do to show us that they are putting 'country 1st'?

I want to thank each and every one of the members of this great Illinois group! We are the 2nd largest group in Illinois with 280 men and women, young and old, all working together to make history and bring change to our country! Our member activity is always high and the blogs and events are creative, diverse and much appreciated!

We started this adventure on Feb, 18 2007, not long after Barack announced his candidacy on that freezing morning in Springfield, IL! Most of us had never been involved in politics of any kind! At that time the website was a lot different than it is now and the only way we had of getting things going was to talk to each other, brainstorm for ideas, and reach out to others locally and nationally!

One of the very 1st people I met was a republican who liked Obama! She is one of the co-admins of this group and the admin of Moms for Obama, a very successful national group! Thank you Mid-America Mom!

We don't have too much time left before election day. Yet, we won't be saying good bye because I'm sure PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA will have plenty for us to do to help him change our country back to what it should be and put the government back into 'our' hands! I am very proud of each and every one of you, thank you, again, and I look forward to many years of working together!

Obama in the heart platform meeting... huge success

Yesterday, on the 2nd day of this amazing process, 15 people met in West Peoria, IL. We were from Springfield, Congerville, East Peoria, Mapleton, Glasford, Peoria and Africa. Most of us have never, ever been involved in a camapaign before!

As the host, I would like to thank each and every one for the yummy food (we had a potluck), for the help and mostly for being citizens who care about our country, who are willing to take the time and energy needed to insure that Barack Obama is our next President and that his call for change is set into motion from the bottum up!

Was it inspiring? You betcha! We debated, discussed and voted for our top 3 concerns and our ideas for their solutions. Everyone showed respect for one another, a true concern for our fellow citiens and our shared struggles, as well as compassion for people around the world.

Our hopes for our country; Peace, diplomacy, regaining respect for America, going green and healthcare for everyone!

A new chapter in our American saga..........

Yesterday, July 19th 2008, was the 1st day that the campaign asked us to begin writing 'our own platform', 'our own destiny' and the destiny of 'our country'.

For the next two weeks, men and women, young and old, rich and poor of all races and religions will be gathering in cities across the country to bring their heartfelt ideals for democracy to the table.

I want to take this time to congratulate all of you who will be participating in this great opportunity.

Today is another primary,! I am anxiously awaiting this evening, watching the results with my family and celebrating a win in Oregan and praying for Obama supporters in KY to VOTE thus narrowing the gap between him and Senator Clinton!

I am saddened by states who buy into the Clinton rhetoric; ie. saying that she is winning?????????????? So, go KY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Racism, fear or ignorance?

Yes, I know that I'm biased, however, I can not understand why ANYONE would still be supporting HRC!

Coming from a blue collar working family that entirely supports Barack, I can only speculate that it is one of these 3 things:

Racism-is it because our Senator is black? If so, this saddens and dissappoints me in a way that I can not even put into words! I have stood firm in the belief that our country needs to unite; all colors, all religions to embrace the 'fabric' of our country which makes us so unique and makes me proud. This is the only way that we can bring about change and take our country back! Now we have that chance!

Fear-are people afraid of change because of the fear-mongering tactics that the Clintons and Rev. Wright have fed us through the corporate owned media? If so, what is to become of this country? We are at the lowest point that I've seen in my 50 yrs. of life. Speaking of the media, I did hear one reporter on CNN say that HRC did, in fact, invite Rev. Wright to the press conference. Also, why aren't we hearing anything about the lawsuit by Peter Paul against Sen. Clinton? Aw, yes, we know why, don't we? Just like what Chris Dodd said, " there are certain things that we can't mention, like Monica Lewinsky, Whitewater, etc..........." So, out of fear we will elect another lying, cheating, sneaking politician? NO, not again!

Ignorance- or perhaps just not thinking for ourselves? This is the only thing that scares me! That people will only listen to little sound bites from our corporate owned media, go for a name they recognize, vote for HRC because they liked Bill and not take some time to find the truth in all of this? How can any blue collar worker support Hilary when she sits on the board of WALMART!? Walmart has been under attack for how it treats it's workers...........they're underpaid and their healthcare certainly leaves a lot to be desired! Check things out for yourselves, people, please!

One last question: Why aren't we reminded about the blatant lying that Hilary does? Why aren't we seeing the Bosnia clip over and over instead of listening to Rev. Wright daily?

WE must wake up from the stupor that we have been in for the last decade (or more)!

Spread the word, get out the vote, STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT!

Attention fellow Illinoisans! Let's travel to Indianapolis to canvass for our candidate! Can't make the trip? Then send personal postcards to democrats in PA stating why you support Senator Obama and ask them to join you, or make phone calls to PA!

There are trips planned for March 29th and April 5th. If these trips are too far away for you to join them, create an event in your area and get fellow supporters near you to join you!

We did it in Iowa and we can do it in PA and IN!

Share a Story event

I signed up to share a story, my story, of why I support Barack. There are so many reasons that I support him, but I'm going to try to make this short and simple, so, I think I'll go back to the beginning....................

Once upon a time in a land of discouragement, there was a man that brought hope to the jaded people that lived there. The land was once a great country, however it had been used and abused by it's government. Hence the people of this land had given up on hope and the dreams that their forefathers had tried to pass down. It had all been taken away from the people with war, lies, and the feeling that no one would listen to them, even if they did speak up.

Yet, there was a man, Barack Obama, who hadn't lost hope, who still believed in the dreams and abilities of the people of the land. So, he called out to them, to stand up for change, to speak out for change and to take their country back!

I heard his voice, I started to believe again and I took action to help in any way that I could because he asked me to. He wanted to hear my voice! It was a concept that the people had not heard of in a very long time, some of them weren't even alive when others had stood for change.

So, many months later here we are! On the verge of a great awakening of spirit in this land! We have joined together to spread the word...........YES WE CAN, we are hopeful, determined individuals from all walks of life sharing a common goal............to bring chang, honesty, transparency to the government so that 'WE THE PEOPLE' will have a GREAT land to live in again.

Inspiration=action.........how?

Our Senator is the most honest, sincere, respectful and yes, hopeful person that I have seen in a long time! And he's a politician? WOW! At 50 yrs. old, I NEVER thought I would describe a politicain like that, at least not since John and Bobby.........I had become jaded, until Senator Obama came forward to take on 'all the wounds' of our country! There are so many, I know that he can not 'fix' everything, but, my lord, it's time that we took that step towards healing and uniting!

He has inspired a nation to action. Thank you Barack!

I admire him for NOT 'disowning' his pastor and friend! After all, the Reverand's words were true and heartfelt. I can only imagine what a black man or woman has been through and how it must feel. Yes, I know the history, but I, as a white woman, can not know the feeling, the anger, the discrimination and how deeply that has affected our fellow Americans of color. All I know is that it is time that we came together to take our country back from the rich, the elite, the coorporations and corrupt politicians that have controlled us all for too long!

How do we reach them?

I am feeling rather disheartened this past week. It's not because of this campaign or the people I've met here. It's not even Senator Clinton or the 'politics as usual' games, ads, etc. that are being played out.

I'm disheartened by a large (at least larger than I'd like) portion of the American people. I know. I dislike even saying it. Yet, why would they listen to negative sound bites, believe everything they hear and see, and fall for the 'fear factor', again?

How do we reach them? How do we get them to listen, think for themselves and do a little reasearching of facts before casting their votes?

I'm an optomist at heart. Therefore, I know I won't give up, I know we won't give up! I know we will overcome these obstacles!

I'm usually very accepting and understanding of people with a different opinion than mine. Yet, with the shape our country is in, how could people not want change? How can they think that Senator Clinton or McCain could bring about change? After her outbursts and non-stop rhetoric in the beginning of the last debate, how can anyone think that she would be a 'negotiator' with other world leaders? Why would anyone want to continue the politics of the past with Senator McCain or Clinton?

So, my fellow 'believers' in Obama, I ask you..............How do we reach them, what do we say, how can we convince them?

On or about the weekend of Sep. 13th, thousands of us will be "Walking 4 Change" in Washington, DC. We will wear our Obama gear and spread the word about 'our candidate' in the heart of political activity! Permits are being submitted this week.

I am organizing a group from central IL as a sister event. Everyone is welcome to attend, well up to 5000 of us! So, either sign up to attend and travel with us, or, create a sister event in your area. This event has been in the works for almost a year, being hosted by Diversity4Obama.

Hi,

I'm new to this group, but I'm looking forward to sharing with you.

I signed up for the Spread the Fever event that was created and was asked to blog about what I did to Spread the Fever.

Today, I created an event: Celebrate 11 in a row: Feb. 23rd to Mar 3rd. It's a fundraising event to celebrate's Baracks on-going victories. I ask fellow supporters to donate $1 for every back to back victory, which, as of today is 11.

I'm hoping for a sweep on March 4th! Aren't you?

Later I will be sending letters to the editor of newspapers in the Mar. 4th states.

This weekend, I'll be making phone calls.

I have 2 groups of my own: Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL and Illinois Chapter of Families for Obama. I have met some wonderful people through out this adventure! It is my 1st time being 'actively' involved in politics...........and I'm 50 yrs. old.

With all of you great bloggers out there, why not give it a try! The papers don't usually publish the form type letters but I know you can write some powerful letters. I want to take a moment and mention the awesome job that our youth have done for this campaign. Too often, you hear that our young people only think of themselves, they don't vote, they don't get involved in their communities...............Well, I beg to differ!!

ALL OF YOU HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL!

I love seeing so many young people out there campaigning, making phone calls, canvassing and donating so much of their time to move this country to a better place by electing Barack as President!

I'm a 50 yr. old mother and grandmother. This is the 1st time that I've been actively involved in a campaign. I hope that this experience encourages you to continue making things happen and not fall into a state of apathy that I have seen in this country. You know what I mean....."My vote doesn't count anyway"; "Things will never change, so why should I bother?": etc.

The fun in giving- ObamaGiving

Just an update on our event, this past Sat., in Peoria, IL.: ObamaGiving

Yes, it was a bit chilly.......but we had fun and managed to pass out over 50 Obama bumper stickers!

We met at Northwoods mall, not quite filled with cars at 1pm, but quite busy. We had to do some last minute decorating on our 'Obamamobile'..........our 'almost antique' motorhome, to make sure everyone could tell that we wanted Obama in '08! (Thanks to TimChicago and his mom, both great people that I was very excited to meet, for all the help!)

From Northwoods, we travelled to Grand Prairie Mall. This is where we really braved the cold and stood outside, asking everyone (some twice, sorry, lol) if they'd like an Obama bumper sticker, reminding them of the date for the Illinois primary and to register to vote. We met supporters from as far away as Virginia!

Grand Prairie was where we had to part company with TimChicago and his mom.....he had to get back to Chicago, but we were very glad that he was 'home for the holidays'! As was my daughter, TiffanyN! She's an active supporter in MO and IL!

After saying our goodbye's to Tim, the rest of us headed up to the Campustown/Bradley area. Once there, we stood on the corner of Main St. and University, holding up our Obama signs and bumper stickers. We had several honks, waves and thumbs up! However, one 'friendly' bloke, LOL, flipped us off........ I responded with a big smile and the peace sign!

Watch for Mid-America Mom's blog for photos.........HINT, HINT! I can't end without thanking her, as usual! She's awesome and yes, she was there too, the one WITH A CAMERA!

It's not to early to start thinking about giving...Thanksgiving & ObamaGiving

I know how busy everyone is during the holiday season, but let's take a couple hours on the Sat. after Thanksgiving, (Nov. 24th: 1pm-3pm) and celebrate ObamaGiving while spreading the word in our own neighborhoods about the BEST CANDIDATE.

Here in Peoria, IL., we will be decorating our Obama Mobile and heading around town to various, hopefully very busy, parking lots. After all, won't just about everybody be out shopping??? We have decorated coffee cans: 'Collecting Change to Make a Change'; 'Buck for Barack'...you get the idea!

If you can't come to Peoria, why not create this event in your town? I know how important the early states are right now, but if you can't be in one of those states, there's still a lot you can do. Plus, it's so much fun to get to know fellow supporters..........

Wow! Have I missed a lot.........

First, I'd like to say, "Boy, did I miss everybody!" Not only that, but I have missed events and even the new updates to the website! I like the changes!

I'd also like to apologize for my long absence.....my family and my health have kept me busy, but I'm happy to be back!

Wow! What about our guy last night on the debate? Wasn't he awesome?

I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone, again, soon. Tomorrow night I'm going to Operation Santa, donning my Obama gear, of course. And I'm looking forward to phone banking in the near future. Unfortunately, I can still not travel, by bus, to Iowa...........oooh, my aching back....LOL. But to those of you who are going, I hope for good weather and lots and lots of new supporters!!! This campaign will succeed in making Barack Obama the next President of the United States, and it will need to do so by doing what every successful organization in the world does . . . . . it will need to duplicate a system of success.

We are all so very fortunate to have this medium available to us so that we can all share different ideas and methods with each other. The following represents just one idea, one approach, one answer to the question, that has proven thus far to be very effective. It's a 5-step, cookie-cutter, duplicable process that any one of us in this campaign can take ourselves through and then duplicate in order to help propel our heroic leader onto victory. The 5 Steps:

Step 1. Join this campaign at barackobama.com
Step 2. Make a monetary contribution and then get yourself a t-shirt and a bumper sticker.
Step 3. Join 5 (or more) national and local online Obama groups through the website to get plugged into people and events. It costs nothing and takes no more than 10 minutes to do.
Step 4. Make sure you're registered to vote, and take at least 1 unregistered citizen that you know out to the homepage to get them registered to vote as well.
Step 5. Talk to 10 (or more) friends and family members, and encourage them to go to the website to see for themselves the incredible energy and optimism of this historic Obama for President campaign. (Once they join, you can encourage them to repeat this 5-step process, and so on).

Look at each step, play with the numbers, do the math, and then just imagine everyone in your state carrying this out.

We should certainly continue sharing best practices and 'ways that work' with each other from across the country, so by all means feel free to forward this on to your friends and to your groups.

My questions for Senator Obama

As all of you may have noticed, I'm a staunch supporter of 'our' Senator. I see him as the absolute best candidate! However, I still have a few questions on issues that concern me. Perhaps someone out there can answer these for me or, at least, point me in the right direction.

With his knowledge of our Constitution, I'm wondering if he believes, as I do, that we have lost many of the freedoms that were guaranteed to us by this original document. If so, what will he do to reinstate these rights and freedoms?

Does he believe that our 'government' has become too large and that we have 'too many laws'?

I heard Gravel speak on the 'dumb' war on drugs; how much it costs us and how many non-violent, 1st time offenders are locked up in our prisons and jails. Senator Obama didn't get a chance to respond, as I remember it. Where does he stand?

I have read where he stands on the issues here and on the Senate website.

Is anyone interested in joining with us on Sat.,Sept. 29th, at Starved Rock; a community service event?

I just found out about an annual community service event that takes place at Starved Rock, on Plum Island, every year. It is truly a wonderful project and a joint effort! The IDNR and the Audubon society, team together and search for volunteers to help plant trees on Plum Island. I think this would be a great opportunity for many of the Illinois groups, wearing their Obama gear, of course, to get together and volunteer to improve one of our most beautiful areas!

I haven't created the event, yet, because I need a commitment from a couple of other groups, first. This is a large undertaking, but it's for a great cause. There is usually a very large turnout and I believe that we would be very visible, not only in our support for our Candidate, but in a worthwhile community service, showing others, that the Senator's grassroot volunteers truly care about the environment!

A quest for all and something to share from another part of the world

I've been thinking about what to say in this blog for quite sometime. I know that many of you feel the same way that I do. I've seen your blogs and all of the good work that you're doing. Yet, I have a favor to ask of all of you. I know that many of you automatically do this without even thinking about it. So, now I'm asking you to do it and think about it at the same time.......as we take a stand to change the current ways of governing in this country, let us take up the quest of standing up against prejudice, as well. We all have to do our part, join together (it's long overdue, anyway), because this is one America, no matter what race, religion, political party, gender, or sexual preference we are, let's make a conscious effort to show others through our words and actions, what this campaign really means to us, and what our candidate, is all about. So, what is the favor that I'd like to ask of you? Here it is:

As we continue forward in this campaign, let's all take up the fight! Let this be the quest for the 'holy grail', in a way. Because what could be better than a nation without prejudice? Just what the Senator is asking for: One America! We'll be out there anyway, in every state, so let's show everyone, as often as possible, that our differences don't divide us, they unite us. That we can all work together and embrace our diversity and then to let the world know that is what this country is all about. Not war, fear, and hatred, as they've seen from us lately.

At this point I'd like to share with you, a message that I received from a friend on this site:

So many friends! 333. I have 2. U r one of the two. I can´t vote for Barack, I'm living in Finland. We have a woman very popular president. But for Amerika I wish a male president, and the male is Barack Obama. I'm voting by heart, and my heart is beating for Obama. I hope he will be a "world president". He is 'voting by heart', looking for a 'world president', 'a new image of Amerika'! How can we get other Americans to do the same thing that someone as far away as Finland is doing?

Yes, we have many, many issues that need attention, immediately; ie: the war, healthcare, global warming, Darfur, aids, poverty, it goes on and on.........but if we carry this 'QUEST' in our hearts and minds, and show it to others every step of the way, eventually, an America united to end prejudice here and around the world, would be my 'holy grail'. Yes, I know it sounds impossible, I know this won't happen quickly but, 'one person at a time', a 'grassroots movement'..........it's beginning now in the form of a presidential election because one man has inspired so many.........nothing is impossible as long as we have 'hope'!

In closing, I would like to salute Detroit, MI., where, on July 9th, 2007, the ugliest word in our vocabulary was laid to rest. Thank you Detroit..........one act at a time, one person at a time and in time One America, One human race, for we are more alike than different, don't you think so?

I wanted to share this post. I was sent a link to the Des Moines Register and in their caucus section, the register was bragging about the turn out for the Clintons and praising Hillary and Bill during their visit on the 4th of July. I tried to be polite, as they asked, so, I did add a little kissy, kissy, which I don't usually do. Will you forgive me this time? LOL

"I would just like to remind everyone that Hillary Clinton is the person that is running for president, not 'our' dear Bill. I like Hillary as a person, I can see why a woman would be appealing to our nation. I know that President Bill Clinton did many wonderful things for our country and that it was a much better time for our country, when he was in office.

However, we are now in the 21st century and our current government has done so much damage, that it will take a lot to get us back on the right track, again. I, for one, do not want to return to the past, I would like to see the page turned forward not backwards. Please take some time to think about this. Bill Clinton did wonders then, and he continues to do great things for our country and around the world. I believe that all of our candidates understand that and have a great respect for the former President Clinton and will continue to encourage and support him to keep up his good works in the future. But, if I may repeat myself, we are voting for Hillary, not Bill. We had a great President Clinton for 8 years, but please, let's try something new that will move us into the future with a passion. Please take a moment to listen to what Senator Obama has to say, he truly wants to put the 'we the people' back into government, to end the corruption in Washington and he is not accepting any money from lobbyists or PAC's in funding his campaign. He's letting us do that! He is worth the time it takes to listen to a podcast or video feed on barackobama.com or YouTube, and he has my vote.

We are a vast variety of people following different paths to reach the same destination-a place where we can find hope and change by having a President in the Whitehouse that we can trust!

Not all of us can contribute to this campaign in the same way. So, just do what you can!

Perhaps you haven't been able to canvass,..........because you don't have a babysitter for your young children, you can't afford it or your health doesn't allow you to travel. That's O.K.- just talk to you friends, family and neighbors or be seen doing community service.

Perhaps you haven't been able to make a monetary donation...........because you've just lost your job, you can't find a job or you're living paycheck to paycheck, as it is. That's O.K.- just contribute your time, your ideas and share your uniqueness with others while letting them know, in one way or another, that you are an Obama supporter.

Perhaps you haven't been able to participate in any events, yet........because there haven't been any near where you live, you're work schedule conflicts or you're homebound. That's O.K.- just contribute your voice and spread the word to others, pick up the phone or send an email or create your own event at a time that's convenient for you.

We are all unique, with different life styles, different personalities and different beliefs. But we are joined together by our determination to see 'our' candidate win the primary and then become the President of this diverse country in 2008.

So, just do what you can! We can make a difference!

I loved watching and listening to our next 'First Lady' on Good Morning America this week!

She is so straight forward and sincere. I was very impressed with her, as usual. Her strength and courage is amazing! She, like her husband, is down to earth, a real person, just like you and me. When was the last time we saw any politicians like this? I can't wait for them to be in the Whitehouse, with their 2 beautiful daughters!

Today, I updated the Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL. group. I listed it as a community service group. This is our goal! Performing community service while wearing our Obama gear. We will not campaign at these events, but we can answer questions, if asked. What better way to show what the Senator believes in, than by giving back to our community? We will be having other events as well, after all, there's so much to do during the summer..........I'm looking forward to all the fun to come!

SUN., JUNE 3RD, 5PM, What You See is What You Get-6/3- Debate Watching Party, Joanne Style, Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL (Debate Watching Party). Glasford, IL. This event is going to be great! Snacks and entertainment as well as a presentation of 2-3 local charities that we will vote on 'adopting'! Not to mention the 2nd Democratic debate!

CHICAGO- We are still going on June 9th, leaving in a car caravan from Northwoods Mall in Peoria, IL. at 9AM and meeting fellow supporters in Chicago for lunch, canvassing and a White Sox Game! We will be decorating our cars to show Obama support as we travel to the 'windy' city! We will be doing our canvassing in front of US Cellular field for about an hour before attending the White Sox vs. Astro's game.

If you can't attend our June 9th, Chicago Tour- Obama Style, there is a Walk for Obama planned in Peoria Heights. To find this event just search for an event near me, if you live in the Peoria, IL area. Remember to sign up as soon as you can for any events that you are interested in.

FYI: Mon., May 21st, Itoo Hall-the Peoria County monthly democratic committee meeting. These meetings are always held on the 3rd Mon. of every month. Tomorrow, Sat., May 19th, Students for Obama, are going to Iowa to canvass. All ages are welcome. email: magen@studentsforbarackobama

I met more great people on Wed. at our event, Drink to Think, at Gorman's Pub in Peoria.Two women from Peoria that are great supporters, with careers and families, attended. They are very busy women with great intelligence and personality! I was also very happy to meet a young couple from Knox College. They are trying to get things going in Galesburg, IL. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from them this fall.

Here in Peoria, IL., it was a beautiful sunny day! I was able to spend time with my mother, mother-in-law, my 'other' mother, sister-in-law, my 2 daughters and my 3 grandchildren!

I would like to ask everyone from central Illinois to join my group: Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL. This is where you can find all the events that are going on in our area! By joining, it makes it easier for me to send email updates to everyone at once via the listserv. As it is now, from my message center, I can only send info to 10 friends at once..........so, it tends to be a little time consuming.

I am also the co-admin for Moms for Obama and the admin for Illinois Chapter of Families for Obama. Mid-America Mom (the official admin of the Moms group) and I are working together on events for all 3 groups, so, by joining, it is an easy way to keep up to date on near-by events and other news.

We have several things planned and a lot more to come!

This is the 1st combination group event between Obama in the Heart and the Illinois Chapter of Families for Obama! I ran out of room, but Moms for Obama will be co-hosting, as well!

Our 'fun-raiser' will be a talent show open to kids of all ages, 0-99! The entry fee for acts is $5. This will go to the campaign. We are asking for a donation of $2 admission for individuals and a family admission donation of $5, for those of you that just want to 'watch' the talent! This will cover prizes and rental fees! (No further admission fee for the performers!) With your paid admission you will receive an Obama in '08 bumper sticker!

When you sign up, please let me know your age, how many people, if it will be a group act, and the type of talent that you want to share with us!

I am looking forward to this! If it goes well, and is as fun as I think it will be, we will have another one before the summer is out!

National Canvassing Day and Chicago Tour- Obama Style- the perfect fit!

GREAT NEWS! The National Canvassing Day fits right in with our Chicago Tour-Obama Style, scheduled for June 9th. We will be traveling via motor home, or car caravan, with our vehicles decorated to support Obama , rather than traveling on foot!

Once we arrive in Chicago, there will be several area supporters meeting up with us to have lunch and/ or attend the Chicago White Sox game!

Long time....no chat!?

Hi everyone,

I've been out of the loop for a little while and I don't have a lot of time now, but I wanted to give everyone a short update on our group, Obama in the Heart, Peoria, IL.

Isn't May a wild and crazy month......the weather, graduations, picnics..........the list goes on and on, doesn't it? I hope to see all of you towards the end of the month or in June!

First of all, did you see the Meet 'n' Greet that our admin., Mid-America Mom, has planned for Mon. night the 7th? It's at the Bob Evans in East Peoria at 7pm. Please RSVP if you plan on attending. I'm sorry to say that I won't be there, this time, because of one of my daughter's award banquets. (Not that I'm unhappy to attend that.... as my heart swells with pride!)

I just wanted to let others know about this event. I could only post to 10 groups, but, I think that other's will be interested in this, as well. Meet-up, Sun., 4/22, 1pm at Carlos O'Kelly's & Last Man Out : A 9/11 Hero's Story (Meeting) Please meet your fellow Obama supporters at Carlos O'Kellys, in the bar area, this coming Sunday, April 22nd at 1pm. Then if you'd like to attend this free event at Lakeview Museum: LAST MAN OUT: A 9/11 Hero's Story, we can travel there together.
This event is at Lakeview Museum in the Basement Auditorium. "William Rodriguez, the last man out of the North Tower, rescued more than 10 people with his own hands, and saved 100's of lives by using his master key-the only one available-to open stairwell doors for the fire dept. rescue crews." This event is being sponsored by Citizens for Truth, Midwest Chapter.

Let's have an informal meeting again! We have so many more members that I'm very excited to meet! We will meet at Perkins restaurant, this coming Mon. night, the 16th, at 6:30pm. We can share ideas and get to know one another a little better or meet for the 1st time! We can order individually. The 1st time we met there, some of us just had drinks, others had appetizers and I had one of their wonderful pie slices with coffee! Yum!

Training with Anita Decker

The meeting last night was excellent and there was a great turnout! You may have seen the article in the Peoria Journal Star today.

OK-last night: Anita said that she will be back, and often, I think. We had the largest turnout that she has seen, so far- about 55 people. Retired Senator Shadid was there and he had great things to say about Barack! Everyone was excited! We had 8 from our group there! Carol/Menard county group was there and she brought Lynn from Greenview, IL. It was nice putting faces with names!

Here's the agenda that we went over:

1.Iowa Sister City Program (I'm excited about this)

The campaign will be helping prepare us for this! We will travel to Iowa 3 times;

1st-between June 9th and Labor Day

2nd-between Labor Day and Christmas

3rd-The final weekend before the Caucus.

Each time we will be in contact with the same people in Iowa. Anita will be matching Peoria up with the sister city so that we're not traveling clear across the state. The Obama staff will help plan our trips, prepare our walk packets,and try to find volunteer housing in or near Iowa! Senator Shadid said that he would like to see busses for these trips and that he would help in any way he could! Anita suggested van or motorhome. So, we'll be kept abreast of this info.

They also asked any of us who have friends and/or family in Iowa to contact them, try to persuade them to support the Senator, then get them to sign up (form provided at meeting -I have some)and send that to campaign headquarters. 2.Camp Obama

A 4-day training/campaigning in Chicago. Housing will be provided and at the end of this camp, participants will be evaluated and offered an interview for internships. (They are looking for young people, but I signed up anyway.)

There was talk about opening an Obama headquarters here. Possibly on a college campus.

I brought up senior citizens and high schoolers. A gentleman that I didn't know came over and said he would contact me about getting the word out to senior citizens. Anita said that she could get us more of the DVD's to use!

We have many festivals locally that I will be mentioning in a later blog! We have chances to volunteer in our communities, wearing our Obama gear, so that others can see the change that's coming, starting with us! Plus other events already planned that you can sign up for!

We will add group meetings, because they are truly fun and when we invite friends and family we have and will continue to see more and more people get involved with us, and this history making campaign!

Hello everyone!

I hope all of you that hosted or attended events today had a great turnout, had fun and inspired others!

Our group had a wonderful group of 15; 5 of whom had never heard the Senator speak before! We had a varied age group, starting at 17 and going up (we won't say how far up! LOL). We raised some money, enjoyed meeting others and were able to watch the webcast on a large projector screen at One World Cafe in Peoria on Main St. There were a few difficulties with the feed........but all in all, I enjoyed it and I think it was an excellent, innovative way to reach out to you and I!

By the way , the food was just as good as usual, at One World! Oh, yes and the iced mocha was delicious! The catering dept., the technical support person and the hostess are all to be commended. They were very nice and helpful!

O.K. back to the topic. I so look forward to each and every event that we have! I have really met some wonderful people already and am able to meet new ones each time, as well!

Please don't forget the committee meeting on Wed. at 6pm at Bob and Diane's in East Peoria, IL. Please RSVP, as soon as possible because we will be having a light dinner for you! Thank you Bob and Diane!

This event is tentative. MINIMUM OF 35 PEOPLE NEEDED! We need everyone's money by APRIL 20TH! The amount due would be $60; checks or money order made out to me: Gail Newtson.The tickets have to be paid for at the time they are ordered and we will pre-pay the limo service, as well! THIS AMOUNT COVERS TICKETS AND TRANSPORTATION ONLY. We will be stopping for lunch at a restaurant in Chicago, before attending the game. BYO-snacks and drinks for the drive.
Anyone from the Chicago area that is interested in meeting us at the game....please contact me to coordinate seating, if possible!
June 9th is National Obama Day, a day to show support to the public. What better way than to have groups from all over attend a White Sox game (the Senator's favorite team)
Of course, we would all wear our Obama gear. If there were enough of us, I'm sure we could get some media coverage. From Peoria, IL we will be taking Deluxe Limo, leaving Peoria at 9am. We would then travel to Normal to pick up fellow supporters and then on to Chicago! We will depart from US Cellular Field at 6:30pm to arrive back in Peoria at about 10:30pm. So, spread the word and confirm ASAP.

As soon as the minimum # of people is confirmed, and the money turned in, I will order the tickets and have them sent to my home. The reason the money is needed so far in advance is because of group sales procedures.

RAIN-OUT. Yes, that's possible. We will still tour Chicago, your tickets will be given to you to attend at another time. After all there's plenty to do in Chicago!

Come on Chicago! Contact me, even if you're not attending, and give me some insight on Barack's neighborhood, favorite music, favorite food, etc!

WOW! To start with, I want to thank each and every one of you that came! What a great group we have! I loved the open communication between all the different age groups! I can't wait to see all of you again! I loved the enthusiasm you have! What else can I say? We are gonna' do great job! Everybody's heart and hope was shining through tonight! We'll all be in touch again, soon!

If you signed up for a committee, we'll be contacting you with directions in the next few days. The committee meeting shows up now, on my profile page. (I haven't checked our group page yet.) April 4th at 7pm @ Bob and Diane's house- directions to follow.

I was excited to see how well the Senator did in Clinton, Iowa. When I checked the Quadcity Times this morning, it said there were about 400. Over 600 attended according to Pat, one of our fellow supporters who hosted the event.

I'm in Peoria, IL and 3 of us went to Davenport! 3700 strong!
His speech was, as usual, inspiring! He makes you feel good, doesn't he? It's that Hope factor, I believe! I couldn't hear his entire speech due to all the cheers and applauding. It was an excellent turnout! They had a youth band, that was great! There were so many people in line that instead of opening the doors at 5:30pm, they let us in at 5:12pm! I couldn't believe the High School gym could hold so many! It was packed!
I was allowed to sign up as a volunteer for IA caucus. I know it's an important state and I'd like to do as much as I can!
All in all, it was a wonderful day! Much warmer than Springfield!

I'd love to hear from anyone else who attended any of the Iowa events!

Conference Call with Chris Hughes

I just wanted to give everyone a summary of what was discussed on the conference call for group administrators this evening. It was very informative.

1.remember our real goals: to get Senator Obama elected as President (so, always ask yourself-Will this benefit him and the campaign? before making decisions or taking action.

a.for instance: We can promote Barack in public activities w/signs, buttons, etc. using our own moral judgement and keeping true to the campaign (but because of FEC laws they can not endorse these, at this time)

2. Thousands of people can organize themselves from the bottom up better than from the top down. As long as everyone is on the same page and has the same values.

3. The website is a tool for us, so that we can work in our own back yards to promote the campaign. The staff is working on making the website better in the following ways:

a. fixing bugs and trying to use the best technology to improve speed and performance.

b. will be adding a search engine, links and ways to export info as soon as possible

c. working on an organizational set of guidelines, which will be released on the website within the next week. This will help us with our meetings/events.

d. the problem of duplicate groups will be taken care of shortly

f. a better 'contact us' button will be added to the site soon

4. the staffers are working on ways to help us at our meetings and events

a. videos may be released in the near future, to use at our events

b. Obama gear, on this site, will be made more affordable. So if we can wait a little while, we'll be able to order from the official site. Chris will look into the possiblility of us being able to submit our own designs.

c. Chris did not know anything about kits from headquarters.

d. the fundraising thermometer will be fixed soon so that we can use it for group fundraisers, besides just our personal thermometers

e. we need to stick with our house parties and meetings for now, anything larger could exceed the $2300 maximum donation. We have to be careful about FEC regulations and the staffers don't have any control over this. So, they can't actually endorse any event or fundraiser right now.

A big thank you to Chris for all he is doing and to Faye for taking such good notes and sharing them. I used some of hers and some of mine.

As always, any questions, suggestions or ideas, let me know. I hope I didn't leave out anything important. I can't write that fast and I don't know shorthand!

I am so excited by your ideas, comments and suggestions. Keep them coming! As for the event, Senator Obama won't be there. This is for 'us' to get the ball rolling, for him. Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share some of the information that I have received in the last couple of days and to thank everyone that has contacted me, either here or via email. I have learned some lessons the hard way and other lessons the easy way, from you!

I am hoping that by publishing this blog I will hear from many more and keep lines of communication open with all! (Blogging is one of the easy lessons that I learned from a couple of very helpful people! A big thanks to them! This certainly does save me a lot of time!!!)

Here's what I have so far:

Obama in the Heart

A Kick-off for Central Illinois- a chance for us to meet, plan, brainstorm, etc., so that we can help make Senator Obama, President Obama.

Bradley is still tentative because I haven't heard back from either contact there. I have a phone call in to the Peoria County Democratic Central Committee, as well. The number of

people attending is what I'm most unsure about. I contacted a banquet hall for information. But, I want to keep it free! I did have a suggestion for a coffe shop. I like that idea but again it depends on the # of people. I've also heard from a wonderful, enthusiastic supporter who offered her home. I'm not worried because we have plenty of time. Together we will pull it off in a delightful manner and accomplish much. I have faith in all of us!

I will keep everyone up to date, hopefully daily, in this method. I'd still like to reach more people and get involved in other events as well! So, contact me, please, and spread the word to your friends and groups. I'd like to hear from all of you! Even those of you who won't be able to attend, please continue to send suggestions.
