The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgendered — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgendered people.

We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgendered people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgendered people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.

Myself i moved to a farm and i am helping two elderly people a couple get their farm back together. They are older and needed help real bad. Things are looking up here and soon they will be producing more with less. Its been about making sure they are not wasting or ruining machinery just to keep going. I have been able to help guide them in many things and do a lot of the hard work that is needed that was being put off due to their age. This summer will be a bountiful yr and will produce so much more with less work. I had to do some major weeding and organizing and now this place is really looking up. Many farmers do need help. Many are elderly and their kids have left and well they don't have funds to pay but the benefits are great if a person is willing to help them.

I am seeking supporters who will let me stay at their properties over night as i tie buddy to the rear of buggy and he eats hay and sleeps. Stalls are great too and so are fenced fields of green grass. Thats buddys favorite thing. He loves to run and kick his hind legs in the air above his head height as he frolicks with freedom in a pasture.

I do seek to help more in rural appalachia and not big cities as Buddy is not fond of the traffic and Barack has lots of city support.

I also seek someone to do logistics in arranging to find me these locations as i travel south for the winter.

Presently i am in Lancaster county Pa. 5 miles south. I can be shipped by uhaul to cover distances if needed. I seek no pay just help along the way.

PS: My arm was broken 3 1/2 weeks ago and i am almost ready to leave this old dairy barn this weekend and help the campaign.

I'm so proud of my home state right now. My partner and I were able to get legally married after 13 years two days ago!

Obama's position on same sex marriage could use some improvement. That said, he is a man of faith and principle who will see the justice of treating all American's equally under the law. I suspect he knows the injustice of “separate but equal” that domestic partnership legislation currently provides in a few of the other 48 states without marriage equality.

In other words I'm hopeful!

Past is Prologue

I hope all is well. We received multiple emails regarding our initial email regarding the Electoral College process. As a result, we decided to provide you with more information - please find below.

The primary election process ends with the national conventions of the political parties. Once the national conventions have been held, and the candidates from the political parties have been nominated and chosen (the elected and appointed delegates such as myself will vote at the DNC), then the presidential election begins in earnest as a contest between the candidates from the political parties. Some people choose to run for president without being affiliated with a political party. Such independent candidates need not concern themselves with getting nominated by a party, but must meet other requirements. For example, such candidates are required to collect a large number of signatures to support their nominations. The sources of funding used by independent candidates comes from personal funds and loans as well as fundraising campaigns.

The candidates campaign right up until Election Day, when the nation finally votes for its President. The candidates travel throughout the country, making public appearance and giving speeches. The parties and the candidates use media advertising, direct mailings, telephone campaigns, and other means to persuade the voters to choose one candidate over the other(s). Often, these measures also serve to point out the weaknesses of the candidates from the other parties involved in the general election. In this national presidential election, every citizen of legal age (who has taken the steps necessary in his/her state to meet the voting requirements, such as registering to vote) has an opportunity to vote. However, the President is not chosen by direct popular vote. The Constitution requires that a process known as the Electoral College ultimately decides who will win the general election.The Electoral College is a method of indirect popular election of the President of the United States. The authors of the Constitution put this system in place so that careful and calm deliberation would lead to the selection of the best-qualified candidate. Voters in each state actually cast a vote for a block of electors who are pledged to vote for a particular candidate. These electors, in turn, vote for the presidential candidate. The number of electors for each state equals its Congressional representation. After Election Day, on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December, these electors assemble in their state capitals, cast their ballots, and officially select the next President of the United States. Legally, the electors may vote for someone other than the candidate for whom they were pledged to vote. This phenomenon is known as the "unfaithful" or "faithless" elector. Generally, this does not happen. Therefore, the candida te who receives the most votes in a state at the general election will be the candidate for whom the electors later cast their votes. The candidate who wins in a state is awarded all of that state's Electoral College votes. Maine and Nebraska are exceptions to this winner-take-all rule.The votes of the electors are then sent to Congress where the President of the Senate opens the certificates, and counts the votes. This takes place on January 6, unless that date falls on a Sunday. In that case, the votes are counted on the next day. An absolute majority is necessary to prevail in the presidential and the vice presidential elections, that is, half the total plus one electoral votes are required. With 538 Electors, a candidate must receive at least 270 votes to be elected to the office of President or Vice President. Should no presidential candidate receive an absolute majority, the House of Representatives determines who the next president will be. Each state may cast one vote and an absolute majority is needed to win. Similarly, the Senate decides who the next Vice President will be if there is no absolute majority after the Electoral College vote. Elections have been decided by Congress in the past. The House of Representatives elected Thomas Jefferson president in the election of 1800 when the Electoral College vote resulted in a tie. When the Electoral College vote was so split that none of the candidates received an absolute majority in the election of 1824 the House elected John Quincy Adams President. Richard Johnson was elected Vice President by the Senate when he failed to receive an absolute majority of electoral votes in the election of 1836.The President-elect and Vice President-elect take the oath of office and are inaugurated two weeks later, on January 20th.
What is the Electoral College?
The Electoral College, administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), is not a place, it is a process that began as part of the original design of the U.S. Constituion. The Electoral College was established by the founding fathers as a compromise between election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote. The people of the United States vote for the electors who then vote for the President.

Who Selects the Electors?
The process for selecting electors varies throughout the United States. Generally, the political parties nominate electors at their State party conventions or by a vote of the party's central committee in each State. Electors are often selected to recognize their service and dedication to their political party. They may be State-elected officials, party leaders, or persons who have a personal or political affiliation with the Presidential candidate. Then the voters in each State choose the electors on the day of the general election. The electors' names may or may not appear on the ballot below the name of the candidates running for President, depending on the procedure in each State.

How did the terms "Elector" and "Electoral College" come into usage?
The term "electoral college" does not appear in the Constitution. Article II of the Constitution and the 12th Amendment refer to "electors," but not to the "electoral college." In the Federalist Papers (No. 68), Alexander Hamilton refers to the process of selecting the Executive, and refers to "the people of each State (who) shall choose a number of persons as electors," but he does not use the term "electoral college."

The founders appropriated the concept of electors from the Holy Roman Empire (962 - 1806). An elector was one of a number of princes of the various German states within the Holy Roman Empire who had a right to participate in the election of the German king (who generally was crowned as emperor). The term "college" (from the Latin collegium), refers to a body of persons that act as a unit, as in the college of cardinals who advise the Pope and vote in papal elections. In the early 1800's, the term "electoral college" came into general usage as the unofficial designation for the group of citizens selected to cast votes for President and Vice President. It was first written into Federal law in 1845, and today the term appears in 3 U.S.C. section 4, in the section heading and in the text as "college of electors."

What are the qualifications to be an elector?
The U.S. Constitution contains very few provisions relating to the qualifications of electors. Article II, section 1, clause 2 provides that no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector. As a historical matter, the 14th Amendment provides that State officials who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States or given aid and comfort to its enemies are disqualified from serving as electors. This prohibition relates to the post-Civil War era.

How is it possible for the electoral vote to produce a different result than the nation-wide popular vote?
It is important to remember that the President is not chosen by a nation-wide popular vote. The electoral vote totals determine the winner, not the statistical plurality or majority a candidate may have in the nation-wide vote totals. Electoral votes are awarded on the basis of the popular vote in each State. Note that 48 out of the 50 States award electoral votes on a winner-takes-all basis (as does DC). For example, all 55 of California's electoral votes go to the winner of that State election, even if the margin of victory is only 50.1 percent to 49.9 percent.
In a multi-candidate race where candidates have strong regional appeal, as in 1824, it is quite possible that a candidate who collects the most votes on a nation-wide basis will not win the electoral vote. In a two-candidate race, that is less likely to occur. But it did occur in the Hayes/Tilden election of 1876 and the Harrison/Cleveland election of 1888 due to the statistical disparity between vote totals in individual State elections and the national vote totals. This also occurred in the 2000 presidential election, where George W. Bush received fewer popular votes than Albert Gore Jr., but received a majority of electoral votes.

What happens if no presidential candidate gets 270 electoral votes?
If no candidate receives a majority of electoral votes, the House of Representatives elects the President from the 3 Presidential candidates who received the most electoral votes. Each State delegation has one vote. The Senate would elect the Vice President from the 2 Vice Presidential candidates with the most electoral votes. Each Senator would cast one vote for Vice President. If the House of Representatives fails to elect a President by Inauguration Day, the Vice-President Elect serves as acting President until the deadlock is resolved in the House.

What would happen if two candidates tied in a State's popular vote, or there was a dispute as to the winner?
A tie is a statistically remote possibility even in smaller States. But if a State's popular vote were to come out as a tie between candidates, State law would govern as to what procedure would be followed in breaking the tie. A tie would not be known of until late November or early December, after a recount and after the Secretary of State had certified the election results. Federal law would allow a State to hold a run-off election. A very close finish could also result in a run-off election or legal action to decide the winner. Under Federal law (3 U.S.C. section 5), State law governs on this issue, and would be conclusive in determining the selection of Electors. The law provides that if States have laws to determine controversies or contests as to the selection of Electors, those determinations must be completed six days prior to the day the Electors meet.

Why do we still have the Electoral College?
The Electoral College process is part of the original design of the U.S. Constitution. It would be necessary to pass a Constitutional amendment to change this system. Note that the 12th Amendment, the expansion of voting rights, and the use of the popular vote in the States as the vehicle for selecting electors has substantially changed the process. Many different proposals to alter the Presidential election process have been offered over the years, such as direct nation-wide election by the People, but none have been passed by Congress and sent to the States for ratification. Under the most common method for amending the Constitution, an amendment must be proposed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress and ratified by three-fourths of the States.

Were any measures introduced in Congress to change the Electoral College process by amending the Constitution?
Yes, several joint resolutions were introduced in the current Congress and were referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. The proposals, all introduced in the House of Representatives, include the following:
- Voting rights for residents of United States territories and commonwealths [H.J.RES.101.IH]

- Direct election of the President and Vice President by the popular vote [H.J.RES.109.IH]

- Right to vote amendment [H.J.RES.28.IH]

- Every Vote Counts amendment [H.J.RES.103.IH]

How do the 538 electoral votes get divided among the States?
The number of electoral votes allotted to each State corresponds to the number of Representatives and Senators that each State sends to Congress. The distribution of electoral votes among the States can vary every 10 years depending on the results of the United States Census.
One of the primary functions of the Census is to reapportion the 435 members of the House of Representatives among the States, based on the current population. The reapportionment of the House determines the division of electoral votes among the States. In the Electoral College, each State gets one electoral vote for each of its Representatives in the House, and one electoral vote for each of its two Senators.
Thus, every state has at least 3 electoral votes, because the Constitution grants each State two Senators and at least one Representative. In addition to the 535 electoral votes divided among the States, the District of Columbia has three electoral votes because the 23rd Amendment granted it the same number of votes as the least populated State.
If a State gains or loses a Congressional district, it will also gain or lose an electoral vote. As a result of the Census conducted in 2000, the number of electoral votes allotted to certain States changed for the 2004 election.

There are 538 members of the Electoral College. How could that number change without amending the Constitution?
The number of electoral votes is set at 538, based on 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 members of the Senate, plus 3 electoral votes for the District of Columbia under the 23rd Amendment. The Electoral College could become larger if a new State were admitted into the union (adding two new Senators and one or more Representatives until the next redistricting), or if the House of Representatives expanded. The size of the House is set by law, not by the Constitution

What is the difference between the winner-takes-all rule and proportional voting, and which States follow which rule?
There are 48 States that have a winner-takes-all rule for the Electoral College. In these States, whichever candidate receives a majority of the vote, or a plurality of the popular vote (less than 50 percent but more than any other candidate) takes all of the State's electoral votes. Only two States, Nebraska and Maine, do not follow the winner-takes-all rule. In those States, there could be a split of electoral votes among candidates through the State's system for proportional allocation of votes. For example, Maine has four electoral votes and two congressional districts. It awards one electoral vote per Congressional district and two by the state-wide, "at-large" vote. It is possible for Candidate A to win the first district and receive one electoral vote, Candidate B to win the second district and receive one electoral vote, and Candidate C, who finished a close second in both the first and second districts, to win the two at-large electoral votes. Although this is a poss ible scenario, it has not actually occurred in recent elections.

I want to thank you all who responded to me in the other first blog. I will get a diary and write in it every day. I hope to ride him from southeastern lancaster county to noerthwestern lancaster county on july 5th and 6th to pick up my carriage. I will surely take pics as soon as i can get a digital camera.

Today was a great day for me and Buddy (my horses name) :) I harnessed him and at first let rebeca an amish teen show me how to drive him with the cart and then she went back to the house while i drove him another 2 times around a 30 acre farm trail and then back to the barn. That was the first time i ever did this. Oh i had rode a jenny when i was a teen in N Calif. I then got on his back after rebeca did. I had to use a bucket to get on.. i am fasting 2 days now and plan to lose 20 lbs and get back down to 155lbs or less soon. I was bareback and well buddy was tired. He was so sweet and then i took him over and washed him down. I now realize he is only gonna be 3 in febuary so i can't really ride him much even though he is a big halflinger. When he is 3 it will be ok. However he can pull a carriage for about an hour a day for the first week and then 2 hours the next week and then 3 hours thereafter. In time he may be able to go more but i have to go slow and let him grow. Of course he and i will always stop and rest at places and meet new people and i am sure i will have to watch him carefully as time goes by. Oh i also have been cleaning his hoves and making sure the thrush isn't there and i did shoe a horse when i was a teen. Well i just wanted to say hi and thank you all and well i will be surlely working on the amish vote as i help them with loading hay and picking crops etc etc etc in hopes i get places to hang for a day or 2. I did load 500 bales for another amish farmer last week. We did that by horse drawn carts and gas powered baler. Me and the father and 2 sons and one daughter did it all in 4 hours and loaded it in the barn. 6 carts filled. Yes i worked very hard and lifted bales over my head and i got many blisters ...ouch...

Anyway i will try to stay in touch and i am hoping to be able to get online at least once a week. Eventually i do plan to get my way down past gettysburg and into maryland and into the shenadoah valley virginia. I then hope to be able to settle in west virginia this winter.

PS: I just created another garden that is 35ft by 35ft in lansdale pa which has 8ft high fence which is 5 ft wire fence with wire strands around top and fine rabbit wire 2ft high at bottom buried 6 inches around bottom to prevent burrowing animals. It has blueberries rasberries thornless blackberries and red and white seedless grapes as well as lots of great veggies. It belongs to a friend who has a 10 year old son.

Tiokasin Ghosthorse, a member of the Lakota Nation, explains, "In western South Dakota, there is an unspoken nuclear Chernobyl. There are days when the sky is brown from the dust of uranium mining tailings in the air. This is cattle and wheat country. When the dust settles, no one knows they are being radiated."

Ghosthorse, also the host of "First Voices Indigenous Radio" on New York's WBAI, speaks in a firm voice when he discusses the impact of uranium mining on his home in Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. "A few years, there were only 19 of us left from my 1973 high school graduating class of 70 or 80 people. Nine out of 10 of them had died of cancer."

To bring attention to the environmental threats and the destruction of sacred sites, hundreds of Native Americans and supporters began trekking from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., on Feb. 11. The five-month walk commemorates the 1978 Longest Walk that led to the defeat of 11 anti-Native American bills in Congress and passage of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.

"The Walk is a call of action to the people to wake up and realize that the continued exploitation of Mother Earth cannot go on," said Ricardo Tapia, a national coordinator of the Longest Walk 2. "This walk is for people of all colors. We are concerned about the trees, water and the sprit of the land. These things are alive. To most non-Indians, these are just seen as resources."

' The New York Times recently noted that in the case of New Mexico, where the nuclear power industry is seeking to restart uranium mining near a Dine (Navajo) reservation, "mining companies walked away from their cleanup responsibilities" of a thousand open mines after the Cold War ended. The Times stated "among the horrors" that resulted were "shifting mountains of uranium tailings; open mines leaching contaminated rain into drinking water tables; wind-blown radioactive dust; home construction from uranium mine slabs; and even the grim spectacle of children playing in radioactive swimming holes and ground pits."

Keen observers have noticed their cars getting somewhat lower gas mileage over the past year. Some have attributed this to a normal side-effect of ageing vehicles, others with new cars didn’t notice it at all and thought it was the normal state of affairs. However, I have some news, and most of you aren’t going to like it.

Last year, the Bush administration introduced the Renewable Fuel Standards program under the Environmental Protection Agency. This was part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which was one of the last vestiges of a Republican-controlled Congress that allowed most Republican backed legislation to be enacted with little or no input by the Democrats. What this RFS program does is require that American refineries use a minimum amount of renewable fuel between 2007 and 2012. This “renewable fuel” is ethanol, and most states are now using a minimum of E10 in all their gasoline products, which is 10% ethanol.

Some people see this as A Good Thing, since ethanol is supposed to give us some freedom from imported oil and give us cleaner air, but as I’m going to show you, it ain’t necessarily so.

Going back to my opening statement, some drivers have noticed their automobiles getting lower gas mileage. One particularly keen observer noticed that his gas mileage went from an average of 32 miles per gallon to 29 miles per gallon. This person is very keen on vehicle maintenance and performance, and since he lives very close to the Wisconsin/Minnesota border, he was able to verify his results by recording his average fuel consumption with E10 from Minnesota, and comparing it to straight gasoline (E0) from Wisconsin. His findings showed that the E10 gasoline affected his gas mileage by 10%.

I’m sure that many are thinking the difference between 29MPG and 32MPG really isn’t that much of a difference, but let’s take a theoretical 320 mile trip. Using straight gasoline, that trip would require 10 gallons of fuel. Using E10, that same trip requires 11 gallons of fuel. Now pay attention, because here’s where the numbers start to do interesting things. Since E10 is 10% ethanol, the remaining 90% is gasoline, so this theoretical 320 mile trip still takes 9.9 gallons of gasoline! That means whether we use E10 or E0, we still use nearly the exact same amount of gasoline – the extra ethanol didn’t really do anything for us. And here’s the kicker: E10 costs almost exactly the same as regular gasoline!

Now this is just one example, and one might be inclined to think this might be an anomalous observation, unique to only one person. Luckily, the US Department of Transportation keeps records on the number of miles driven and fuel burned in all 50 states (http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policy/ohim/hs06/motor_fuel.htm) and these numbers say quite a bit.

Using 2005 data (the latest numbers available), drivers in Minnesota drove 56.6 billion miles and consumed 2.7 billion gallons of fuel, making their fuel average 20.6MPG. Drivers in Wisconsin drove 60.3 billion miles and consumed 2.6 billion gallons of fuel, making their rating 23.3MPG. In other words the E10 state (Minnesota) got 12% less fuel efficiency than the E0 state (Wisconsin).

Wow.

The bottom line here is that ethanol as a fuel additive is a losing game. It doesn’t remove our dependence on foreign oil because we use only a fraction less gasoline to achieve the exact same results.

Today, 46% of all gasoline in the USA is at least a 10% ethanol blend, with that number reaching 100% by 2012 under current guidelines. The problem is that the ethanol is coming from corn; 98% of domestic ethanol is from domestic corn crops. There are currently 158 ethanol refineries online, 51 under construction, and hundreds more pending air quality permits from the various state Environmental Protection Agencies. With that kind of growth, ethanol from corn is likely to be our source of ethanol for many years to come because these plants can only convert corn into ethanol. Not cellulosic ethanol, or algae-bearing ethanol – these plants are essentially huge stills, designed to ferment corn and turn it into alcohol.

The problem of ethanol from corn isn’t that the corn we eat is being used to make fuel – it isn’t. The problem is that farmers are growing less of the food crops we use to make more of the ethanol-producing dent corn. Farmers are planting less sweet corn, wheat, soybeans, rice, and even cotton to make room for the new cash crop: dent corn. When you combine a shortage of feed crops with an all-time high cost for fuel necessary to grow, harvest, and process those crops, you get a huge spike in food prices just like we’re seeing today, and the really bad news is that it’s only going to get worse.

Ethanol is a lie. There are other, more effective methods for turning vegetable matter into fuel. As an example, there is a technology called “thermal depolymerization”, which mimics the way mother earth converts decaying plant and animal matter into crude oil, except on a radically faster timeline. Think about that – we can take our grass clippings and chicken guts and make a light, sweet crude suitable for refining. I’ll bet you didn’t know about that. Most people don’t. Of course that won’t solve our energy crisis, no single solution will. But a common-sense approach to energy production that combines the best of all available and emerging technologies will certainly get us where we need to be.

It is my sincere hope that President Obama has a full understanding of the emergency situation the current ethanol policy has on the domestic economy, as well as the humanitarian crisis it is causing abroad. Whatever happens, the insane energy policy of the Bush Administration needs to be corrected in the next administration.

No one human country is better than another. yes we have leaders who try to play leaders and many times they run roughshod over other poorer weaker military countries. Who are we as americans to use and abuse most of the energy of the world?? Who are we as americans to think just because we have numclear bombs that another country can't?? Who are we to stop the world from balancing out as people cross boarders and become more industrialized?? Iran saw us attack iraq and well if i was them i would build a nuclear bomb. If i was a mexican i would cross the boarder and come to america, especially since many of americans kids are too lazy to do the work and think they are better than other kids from around the world.

All, we as individual humans can do, is try to share and care for one another and stop playing this foolish game of being imperialistic americans, who dare to think they deserve they better land and more of the oil etc..

I know my two america bloood children will get less as my two adopted kids in africa get more. Are my blood kids more valuable than my two kids i support in africa?? NO! People are humans and we all need to stop playing the country game and thinking we deserve more just because we were born here in america.

I served my country during the vietnam war and in doing so i learned a lot. I learned that my country is an abuser and needs a major adjustment in attitude. I support Barack Obama and pray he helps to bridge gaps around the world so other people born in other countries do not feel less than and so we americans learn to not feel we are better than.

I just built a 35ft by 35ft 8ft high deer fence in the suburbs for a veggie garden so my son and his neighbors can grow food to eat. I live on a small VA disibility and i don't abuse it, i use it to help make the world a better place. It isn't mine even though it is sent to me. ( after 30 yrs the VA finally gave it to me without me asking for it) but i am smart enough to use it properly.

We americans need to change our ways. Yes illegals come here and work for bosses who use them and abuse them and well its those bosses who don't care and its many of us who have them cut our lawns as we cry illegal immigrants who also think we are better than.

Well people you better get use to oil going higher and learning to grow your own food and get to work and share and care and stop using and abusing people and energy just because you are americans.

A true american has a victory garden and that is something i have had after WWII ended / in the 50's i was born. That victory is not about being a conqueror but it is about doing for yourself and doing for your neighbor and one of our neighbors is mexico and until we change our ways here in america we will suffer much much more and we will point fingers at others and make blame which is really about our own laziness and not teaching our kids to grow food and pick veggies because in the end someone has to do it and that means you and me, so get out there and plant a victory garden and share it with your neighbors.

Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama has been weathering a small storm lately in the LGBT community for being too tight-lipped with gay and lesbian news media.

Unlike his rival Hillary Clinton, who's given interviews to Logo and several local papers since appearing on the cover of The Advocate last fall, the Illinois senator has only talked once, to address the Donnie McClurkin controversy. But last week, his campaign offered our magazine an exclusive sit-down in Chicago with the man who may well become the next President of the United States.

To some extent, it symbolizes the brilliance of a protracted primary contest where candidates continually pivot and adjust in order to engage ever more voters. Had the race stopped cold in the snows of New Hampshire, gays and lesbians would have been left with one interview of record for each Democratic candidate in total.

But in a wide-ranging interview this Monday, Sen. Obama discussed "don't ask, don't tell," Rev. Wright, and why LGBT folks should lead on marriage equality, not politicians. Some may call the chat a shrewd political move made by the Obama camp ahead of the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary. We call it access.

The Advocate: Let’s start with what’s hot, why the silence on gay issues? You’ve only done one other interview with the LGBT press. I know people wish they were hearing more from you.

Sen. Obama: I don’t think it’s fair to say silence on gay issues. The gay press may feel like I’m not giving them enough love. But basically, all press feels that way at all times. Obviously, when you’ve got limited amount of time, you’ve got so many outlets. We tend not to do a whole bunch of specialized press. We try to do general press for a general readership.

But I haven’t been silent on gay issues. What’s happened is, I speak oftentimes to gay issues to a public general audience. When I spoke at Ebenezer Church for King Day, I talked about the need to get over the homophobia in the African-American community, when I deliver my stump speeches routinely I talk about the way that antigay sentiment is used to divide the country and distract us from issues that we need to be working on, and I include gay constituencies as people that should be treated with full honor and respect as part of the American family.

So I actually have been much more vocal on gay issues to general audiences than any other presidential candidate probably in history. What I probably haven’t done as much as the press would like is to put out as many specialized interviews. But that has more to do with our focus on general press than it does on … I promise you the African-American press says the same thing.

And Spanish-language?

And Spanish-language [outlets] had the same gripe. Just generally, we have generally tried to speak to broader audiences. That’s all that is.

I think the underlying fear of the gay community is that if you get into office, will LGBT folks be last on the priority list?

I guess my point would be that the fact that I’m raising issues accordant to the LGBT community in a general audience rather than just treating you like a special interest that is sort of off in its own little box – that, I think, is more indicative of my commitment. Because ultimately what that shows is that I’m not afraid to advocate on your behalf outside of church, so to speak. It’s easy to preach to the choir; what I think is harder is to speak to a broader audience about why these issues are important to all Americans.

If you were elected, what do you plan to do for the LGBT community -- what can you reasonably get done?

I reasonably can see “don’t ask, don’t tell” eliminated. I think that I can help usher through an Employment Non-Discrimination Act and sign it into law.

You think it’s transgender-inclusive?

I think that’s going to be tough, and I’ve said this before. I have been clear about my interest in including gender identity in legislation, but I’ve also been honest with the groups that I’ve met with that it is a heavy lift through Congress. We’ve got some Democrats who are willing to vote for a non-inclusive bill but we lose them on an inclusive bill, and we just may not be able to generate the votes. I don’t know. And obviously, my goal would be to get the strongest possible bill -- that’s what I’ll be working for.

The third thing I believe I can get done is in dealing with federal employees, making sure that their benefits, that their ability to transfer health or pension benefits the same way that opposite-sex couples do, is something that I’m interested in making happen and I think can be done with some opposition, some turbulence, but I think we can get that done.

And finally, an area that I’m very interested in is making sure that federal benefits are available to same-sex couples who have a civil union. I think as more states sign civil union bills into law the federal government should be helping to usher in a time when there’s full equality in terms of what that means for federal benefits.

   Obama Holds LGBT Fund-raiser In New York City

     Sen. Barack Obama waded deep into Clinton
territory Thursday evening at a private LGBT
fund-raiser in New York City where the price of
admission was $2,300 per person.

   Held at the apartment of GLSEN founder and
executive director Kevin Jennings and his partner,
Jeff Davis, the event drew about 125 people and
raised $170,000. No press were admitted, but based
on several accounts, attendees were struck by the
Illinois senator’s candor as well as his fluency
with LGBT issues.

   “I’ve been to many events over the past 10 years
of candidates running for office,” said Corey
Johnson, one of the hosts, “This was the most
forthright, eloquent, and detailed stuff I’ve heard
from a politician [regarding gay issues].”

   Molly Lenore, 43, compared Obama’s discussion of
the LGBT community to the speech he gave about race
in America last week. “During his race speech,
everybody said afterward that he treated the
American people like adults, and I felt like that’s
what he did,” said Lenore, who is transgender and an
Obama supporter. “I might not agree 100%, but I want
to have an intelligent conversation with somebody.”

   According to those present, Obama spoke for about
30 to 35 minutes about queer issues and then fielded
questions, most of which were not LGBT-specific.

   Johnson, who is 25, has supported Obama for about
a year but prefaced his remarks by saying he has
never been an “Obama-phile.” He said the senator
addressed some of the most contentious LGBT issues
without prompting, such as same-sex marriage and the
inclusion of transgender people in the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act. In fact, those were the two
issues Sen. Obama singled out as being potential
disappointments to the LGBT community right now,
while he signaled that a hate-crimes bill could
likely be passed and signed into law and that repeal
of “don’t ask, don’t tell” might be on the horizon.

   According to several sources, including Johnson
and Lenore, Obama said he did not think it was
“politically feasible” to secure marriage rights for
same-sex couples in the country at this point. Sen.
Obama acknowledged that the community wanted full
marriage rights but said that he favored civil
unions for now while leaving open the possibility
that his position might evolve in the future.

   In terms of ENDA, Obama said he supported an ENDA
that included transgender protections but that he
didn’t believe a fully inclusive bill had enough
votes to pass the Senate at this time.

   “I don’t agree -- I think we’re much stronger
united as a community,” Lenore said of keeping
transgender protections in the bill. “But I do
understand the politics and I do appreciate the fact
that he said, hey, it’s not going to pass in this
political climate. Many other politicians haven’t
really done that. They make decisions but they never
really address the trans community.”

   Should he become president, Obama said his first
three priorities would be designing a safe exit
strategy for Iraq, working on affordable health
care, and addressing greenhouse gases and the
environment.

   As Sen. Obama made his way to the door, Johnson
said he asked the senator directly to do more
interviews with the gay press, citing the fact that
he has conducted only one interview with an LGBT
outlet during his presidential campaign. “I said,
‘Your speech tonight was so moving to all of us, the
way you spoke about our community. You need to do
more [interviews],” recalled Johnson. “And he said,
‘You’re right, absolutely. We do need to do more

The movement sparked by Barack Obama will continue after November. "We're not only going to win an election," Obama has declared. "We're going to change the country." Obama's commitment to community organizing guarantees the movement will persist.

Careful planning is needed to maximize this potential. By proceeding wisely, we can establish effective structures and avoid both fragmentation and excessive centralization. I invite you to help develop ideas to recommend to Obama, his staff, and his supporters.

When Obama first ran for office in 1995, he asked, "What if a politician were to see his job as that of an organizer, as part teacher and part advocate, one who does not sell voters short but who educates them about the real choices before them?" Reflecting the influence of one of his mentors, Saul Alinsky, he told the Chicago Reporter, "It's time for politicians and other leaders to take the next step and to see voters, residents or citizens as producers of this change."

In 1988, in a long article titled "Why Organize? Problems and Promise in the Inner City," Obama discussed his own approach, which differed from Alinsky's. In that piece, he argued, "[Community organizing] enables people to break their crippling isolation from each other, to reshape their mutual values and expectations and rediscover the possibilities of acting collaboratively."

As he recently told the New Republic, "Alinsky understated the degree to which people's hopes and dreams and their ideals and their values were just as important in organizing as people's self-interest." This insight has grounded him in a moral framework that is fostering a moral renewal that could become profound and widespread.

He concluded his "Why Organize?" article with this answer:

In return, organizing teaches as nothing else does the beauty and strength of everyday people. Through the songs of the church and the talk on the stoops, through the hundreds of individual stories of coming up from the South and finding any job that would pay, of raising families on threadbare budgets, of losing some children to drugs and watching others earn degrees and land jobs their parents could never aspire to - it is through these stories and songs of dashed hopes and powers of endurance, of ugliness and strife, subtlety and laughter, that organizers can shape a sense of community not only for others, but for themselves.

Obama's seriousness is demonstrated by his hiring Marshall Ganz to direct the training of his organizers. Ganz, who hasn't worked on a political campaign since Bobby Kennedy's, is legendary. As an undergraduate, he dropped out of Harvard to become immersed in the civil rights movement, worked for many years with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers, and then returned to Harvard to complete his studies and teach community organizing at his alma mater. In "Battle Plan: An Exclusive Look Inside Barack Obama's Push to Win California," Mayhill Fowler described Ganz as the "veritable architect" of Obama's organizing plan.

Based not on impersonal relationships but face-to-face meetings rooted in a common purpose, the campaign equips volunteers with skills to organize for change in their communities after the election. In contrast to traditional canvassing which merely involves occasional brief visits to the front door, Ganz's approach is based on ongoing relationships. According to Laura Flanders, he says, "Canvassers assess voter preferences. Organizers inspire commitment."

As Obama's campaign has stated:

You help them to build neighborhood committees, host house meetings to recruit new activists, plan outreach that makes sense within their neighborhoods. You give up some control of the message and allow people to speak from the heart instead of from the handed-down Message of the Day.

Most of Ganz's training sessions have been based on Congressional districts. Participants meet and work with other volunteers who live in the same Congressional district. According to Zack Exley, in his "Obama Field Organizers Plot A Miracle" piece on Huffington Post:

Trainees leave the events organized into teams by Congressional district, charged with building an organization that reaches all the way down to the precinct level.... While the curriculum has varied with the different teams behind each training, the end goals have remained consistent: send tight-knit, well-trained and highly motivated teams of volunteer organizers back to their home Congressional districts with a plan.

Prior to the California primary, Fowler reported, "Every California congressional district will have a seven-member team running its own mini-campaign. Each of the seven will find and teach another seven, according to the campaign blueprint. Then each of those groups doubles again."

This approach based on Congressional districts is very encouraging, for it will facilitate people working together to pressure Congresspersons after the campaign. The House of Representatives is key to reforming national policy, because Congresspersons are more responsive than are Senators and Presidents. Local, regional, and statewide efforts are also needed, for social transformation will require addressing all of our institutions, our communities, our culture, and our selves. But focusing on the House of Representatives is essential.

Despite our success so far, potentially serious pitfalls lie on the road ahead and many questions remain concerning how the movement will be structured, including the following.

The Democratic Party

Will the Obama campaign transform the Democratic Party into a force that presses year-round to implement its platform?

Until Howard Dean became head of the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Party had been a shell of an organization, held in reserve to assist candidates in the general election. In only a few years, Dean has greatly strengthened the Party's electoral infrastructure. If Obama gets the nomination, he might well merge his campaign with the Democratic Party, at least to some degree. But it's unclear whether he or Dean will recommend that the Party dedicate itself to constantly organizing, recruiting, educating, and mobilizing its members to advance the Party platform - which is shaped by its members, at least to some degree, and could be crafted through an even more participatory process.

Will the Democratic Party hold elected officials accountable to supporting its platform?

Without discipline, a political party is weak. Long ago, radical-right Republicans realized this reality and began running loyalists in primary elections against incumbents who were too inconsistent in their adherence to hard-right principles. It didn't take many victories and near-victories to convince wavering Republicans to be more steadfast. Progressives within the Democratic Party are beginning to exercise similar leverage. The Democratic National Committee and the national campaign committees should also, when feasible, support opponents to incumbents who repeatedly violate the Democratic Party platform. At the least, these national bodies should remain neutral by not automatically supporting incumbents, as has been the case.

How is the Democratic Party structured and how do we need to reform it?

If the Democratic Party in other states is similar to the California Democratic Party, its basic structure is conducive to democratic control. But the grassroots has not been unified and motivated with a clear vision to reform that structure to make it even more democratic. The well-publicized power of the super-delegates at the national convention, for example, illustrates a pattern that is repeated throughout the country - and in the selection of the members of the Democratic National Committee. The President need not totally dominate the national party. In fact, the President could benefit from having a strong, independent force able to pressure Congress more effectively than a puppet can.

Social Transformation

Will the Obama Movement dedicate itself to truly serving their communities?

As David Sirota reported in "The New Permanent Campaign," many grassroots Democratic Party forces, like Democrats Work and Blue Tiger Democrats, are already taking this approach by engaging regularly in community service to assist disadvantaged individuals. As Erin Egan, who runs the 500-member Colorado branch of Democrats Work, told Sirota, "Lots of folks want to do community service but are not political. But when they volunteer with us they see the Democratic Party's values and often become committed political volunteers." Blue Tiger "sponsors food drives, roadside cleanups and computer training seminars - all under the banner of the Democratic Party." This approach needs to be adopted throughout the country, district by district.

Will Obama elaborate on his affirmation of personal responsibility by encouraging his supporters to commit to constant self-improvement, environmental responsibility, and community service as well as political action - and to support one another in these efforts?

This additional step would flow logically from Obama's worldview, which declares that we should ask not only what the government can do for us, but also what we can do for each other.

As some colleagues and I are proposing, many members of the Obama Movement could - within a manageable time frame (only eight hours a month for many) - participate in a "network of home-based communities" committed to these goals. This comprehensive, or holistic, approach is not for everyone. But for many it could deepen their sense of community and help them become more effective. We don't need another political machine that treats people like instruments. We need rich communities whose members take seriously our responsibilities as human beings, treat each other with respect and compassion, and believe that we can change the character of our communities and our country.

Internal Structure

How will the Obama Movement balance local empowerment and strong national leadership?

As of August 2007, Exley reported:

There is still no online system available for the teams graduating from Camp Obama (or the teams they establish below them) to report in their progress back to headquarters. This is a huge missed opportunity to give field directors perfect visibility into the work of every team, anywhere in the country - visibility that could be used to identify the best field volunteers in the organization for promotion, and to identify problem areas that need special attention from staff organizers.

So far as I know, this situation still prevails and needs to be corrected. It is essential that local organizers have efficient ways to communicate upward and horizontally - partly for problem solving, peer support, and community building. By using the Internet effectively to facilitate this communication, we can avoid the kind of top-down power that has often been reflected in organizations based on Alinsky's methods.

One approach might be to form small home-based teams that meet at least monthly and provide feedback to the national office regularly. These teams could select representatives to local teams who would digest this feedback, form their own recommendations, and select representatives to Congressional District-wide teams. These teams in turn could develop their own input to the national office, organize regular Congressional District-wide public events, and select representatives to a statewide team. And the state team could select representatives to a national Advisory Committee. This bottom-up process could help empower the membership.

A precedent exists for such home-based teams. As the campaign reported in "Obama: The Organizer and the Moment":

In March, people all across the country hosted Hope Action Change house parties, opening their doors to neighbors and strangers who were hungry for change. People like Janet Sutherland of Council Bluffs discussed their deeply personal stories about how our government had failed them, and talked about how, together, they could change things.

This is what grassroots democracy is all about - small groups of friends and neighbors coming together to address common challenges and come up with collective solutions.... People were talking about the collective challenges facing their communities. People were sharing common hopes for change in 2008. People were connecting.

These home-based teams could meet prior to the election to talk about post-election activities, for they would inspire more people to participate. And the movement needs to be ready to act immediately after the election. To do so, the national office needs as many good ideas as possible from the grassroots, and the grassroots needs to be prepared.

What lessons can we learn from other national organizations?

As I recall, a key turning point in the weakening of the Rainbow Coalition was a dispute about the national representative from Louisiana. The local members wanted one individual, but Jesse Jackson insisted on someone else and the conflict was never resolved. We need to avoid that kind of scenario. A number of national organizations - including labor unions, NOW, and the Sierra Club - currently operate with a considerable degree of democratic control by their membership. We need to look at how those organizations are structured and learn from them.

Community Empowerment

Will the Obama Movement promote new structures in the community that empower people?

The Obama Movement, for example, could persuade all of our elected officials to convene monthly Community Dialogues to enable their constituents to ask questions and make statements. These public forums would be carefully structured to make sure that they were fair and orderly. If more people wanted to speak than time allowed, speakers would be selected randomly (random selection is an important principle that reflects faith in people). With no pre-arranged agenda, each individual would be free to speak their mind. Community organizations could use these events as organizing tools by mobilizing their members and distributing literature at pre-reserved tables. Participants could stay afterwards to network and initiate new friendships. In these ways, Community Dialogues would help hold elected officials accountable, better inform those officials about their constituents' thoughts and feelings, and help foster community.

The fact that Obama has pledged as President to conduct national town hall meetings suggests that he would be open to this idea and would consider randomly selecting participants in his forums. We need new official structures like these to help make our society more democratic.

Will the Obama Movement join in broad coalitions to advance its mission?

Some Alinsky-style organizations have refused to join in coalitions, preferring instead to focus exclusively on building their own organization. Hopefully, the Obama Movement will not repeat these mistakes. Regardless of how strong it becomes, it will always be stronger by occasionally uniting with others.

For example, the movement could join with other organizations in a Million Member Monthly Mobilization to present the same urgent demand to every Congressperson in the country at the same time. If more than 2,000 voters per district were to devote two hours a month to back the same demand simultaneously, the impact would be enormous. Who knows? It could grow into a Five Million Member Monthly Mobilization.

The staff and members of each organization that belonged to this coalition could then return to their normal activities. But if they were to come together monthly to briefly support one another, they could accomplish more together than they can alone.

Will the Obama Movement join in global coalitions to advance its mission?

Shortly after he took office, John Kennedy inspired the nation by taking on the steel industry for unjustified price increases. This example is instructive. Our political leaders can support efforts to hold private corporations accountable to the public interest, including the need to protect workers' rights and the environment. Consumer boycotts are often an effective way to achieve these goals. But there are many simultaneous boycotts, which dilutes their effectiveness.

If global advocacy organizations, including the Obama Movement, were to establish a process to identify - deliberately, openly, and democratically - a priority for a unified Annual Global Boycott, we could win victories with those campaigns and persuade other corporations to respond favorably to their stakeholders.

Structure is essential. We can't rely solely on spontaneity. We need structural reform throughout society, including our grassroots organizations. In this piece, I've presented some preliminary ideas concerning how the Obama Movement and our society might be structured.

I used to put together fiscal stimulus packages as a career civil service employee in the budget office of several presidents of both parties, so I have seen more of them than most people. The basic purpose is to add quickly to the disposable income of people who will spend it. On the tax side this means either rebates in temporary drops in withholding. On the spending side it means one-shot increases in existing income support programs such as social security and veterans benefits.It also argues for measurers that expire or otherwise self-destruct. Otherwise expenditures will trail on in future years creating a fiscal hangover effect.Programs that respond automatically to raising unemployment, such as unemployment insurance, food stamps and Medicaid face another problem. They are administered by states and localities, which have not always had the staff on hand to process unexpected increases in claims. Dealing with this problem needs to be part of any effective package.The Clinton plan is not a short-term fiscal stimulus package. All the items except energy assistance would take too long to enact and carryout. Energy assistance would come on stream just as the North is warming up and the South has not yet turned on the air-conditioning. And I am not sure we want large subsidies for energy consumption even for low-income people.The Obama plan is what a sophisticated fiscal stimulus program is supposed to look like: Fast and simple, with cash out the door and in peoples pockets. Whoever helped him put it together knows what they are doing.Judge for yourself:Obama's plan would:
Provide an immediate $250 tax cut for workers and their families. Provide an immediate, temporary $250 bonus to seniors in their Social Security checks. The Clinton Plan would:

I promised myself that I'd wait to wait until December
to decide on my presidential choice, on the theory
that events would render that choice obvious. My hopes
have been dashed. In fact, I would happily support any
of the Democratic candidates; each would be a breath
of fresh air.

I worry less about the Iraq war than what happens
after the election. The United States is engaged in
peace negotiations, but it is a measure of Republican
belligerence that this cannot be acknowledged. By next
November an arrangement with Iran could be in place or
close. My most audacious prediction is that during the
course of the long campaign's final 11 months the Iraq
invasion will recede in importance.

That fact won't do the Republicans much good, though
that party's sole hope for mounting a winning
presidential campaign depends on peace or good
prospects for peace.

Despite my optimism about the situation in Iraq, its
legacy will nonetheless handcuff the next president.
She or he will start governing with an unmanageable
budget deficit. With the sorry state of the US dollar,
the realities of world trade will require higher
taxes, always a hot button issue.

Unfortunately, the increased government revenues will
need to be applied to reducing future budget deficits.
They won't go to universal health care, they will not
ease the strain growing on adequate AIDS funding.
Vital infrastructure programs like the Second Avenue
subway and protecting New Orleans from floods and
California from fires will continue to be skeptically
scrutinized; some crucial projects will be deferred or
rejected. Homeland security might take precedence over
education. Most of the taxes will help balance future
obligations like Social Security and Medicare.

Politically this is the worst of all possible worlds -
raising taxes without offering programs to justify the
hikes.

To my mind the record suggests that Hillary Clinton
will introduce new programs with little or no
incremental public cost - enhancing leeway for family
medical leave or strengthening protections for civil
liberties in anti-terrorism legislation. She will
fight to increase child health care, but so will every
Democrat. She is at great risk of being labeled a big
spender without convincing voters they are getting
something for their money.

My preference for Barack Obama lies in the hopes that
as he engages the budget demons he will find new and
creative ways to reduce spending and actually tax the
most powerful. That will not be easy. Congress is hard
to move and all real change requires at least the
acquiescence of the legislative branch, if not its
active partnership.

But I think Obama is governed by core principles,
while Clinton has years of experience. But her
expertise was forged in a pre-Iraq political
environment, and I believe life after Iraq creates new
possibilities, ones that I hope Obama will be able to
seize to move the nation in a new direction.

Clinton's idea of building consensus involves
compromise with the GOP moderates and the military
industrial complex - an approach that would limit the
scope of her domestic initiatives. Obama is better
suited to reviewing military missions with an eye
toward cutting wasteful spending.

Do I know this for a fact? Of course not.

Would I trust Hillary to undertake this endeavor if it
were left to her? Yes, I would. In fact her years on
the Armed Services Committee may have taught her
practical ways to cut military spending.

So you see why I am comfortable with the entire
Democratic field.

John Edwards has made the clearest public commitment
to bend government spending to assist the average
American whose budgets are stretched and whose
standard of living is declining. I would be happy to
support him, but as far as I can tell, he will be
eliminated from contention early.

I am not wishy-washy. I am desperate for a Democratic
victory that unites the party and gets the country off
to a good start in January 2009. Because it will be a
rocky ride - the first two years will be filled with
hesitation and the potential for mistakes.

But in this new world I trust Obama's gut instincts
most. He clearly views expensive military adventures
as a foreign policy of last resort.

As well, the mass incarceration of blacks in recent
decades, due in part, though not completely, to the
discriminatory nature of drug laws, will be viewed
differently by Obama and the nation if he is in the
White House.

And finally, the nation appears on the cusp of
abandoning long accepted notions of an integrated
society and a woman's right to chose. Obama, I
believe, has the best chance among all contenders to
rekindle the hope and optimism needed to face down
these threats.

For all of these reasons, I prefer him for president.

Today Dec 13th 2007 witnessed the launch of USAspending.gov,= http://www.usaspending.gov/

which was created by the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Funding_Accountability_and_Transparency_Act_of_2006

by Tom Coburn and Barack Obama. The site enables tracking of $1 trillion in federal spending on contracts, grants, earmarks, and loans. The bill faced serious opposition, including anonymous holds by some of the biggest porkbarrel spenders (including Ted Stevens), but in the end, Coburn and Obama prevailed.

So what kind of data does this site give us? Well, how about the top 100 recipients of federal money, = http://www.usaspending.gov/fpds/tables.php?tabtype=t2&subtype=t&year=2007

to make it easy to extract data.

The site is clearly a treasure trove of data and is a huge step forward towards government accountability. What's also nice is how user friendly it is.

Let's look at a few examples of what we can dig up.

Example 1: The list of transactions with KBR, Inc. (formerly part of Halliburton) in 2007 = http://tinyurl.com/27xroh . This came out to a paltry sum of $2.7 billion dollars (so far this year), which is nothing compared to previous years as the bar graph on the summary page = http://tinyurl.com/yq39cq shows.

Example 2: No bid contracts are among the darkest corners of federal spending - the lack of competition in these contracts is in large part what leads to overcharging by contractors and waste of taxpayer dollars. Well, there was $30 billion in no-bid contracts in 2007 = http://tinyurl.com/2x2225 , including money to some companies I had never heard of, including $1.2 billion to Armor Holdings, Inc. = http://tinyurl.com/248loz and, strangely, $163 million to the government of Canada. = http://tinyurl.com/28amw3

Example 3: Half of the difficulty in keeping our government accountable is being able to separate the wheat from the chaff - that is, being able to get at the data for the above-the-board stuff that goes on so we can focus in on the under-the-table dealings that are inevitably taking place. Without the data, it's hard to separate the two. In the "unknown" category of spending includes $2.6 billion for guided missiles, = http://tinyurl.com/yv74mc mostly to Lockheed and Raytheon.

There are a million more examples, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them in the coming weeks and months. It's hard to say whether this will change the ways contractors behave and porkbarrel spending is done, but it will expose no-bid contracts to a greater extent than has been done in the past, and moreover, will enable ordinary Americans to help be watchdogs.

All in all, I'm very happy to see another positive step towards government transparency, something that Sen. Obama has been a leader in.

Finally - I have one challenge to everyone - find one interesting, strange, or otherwise noteworthy pieces of spending using the site.

Bill never would reduce the crack cocaine that was asked for by many during his administration. Yesterday the supreme court gave permission to judges to have disgression in sentencing guidlines.

Clinton Signs Bill To Disapprove of Equalizing Crack-Powder Cocaine Sentences

On October 30, President Clinton signed a bill that blocks the U.S. Sentencing Commission amendments to equalize the penalties for crack and powder cocaine from taking effect

(see "Congress Nixes Amendments to Sentencing Guidelines on Cocaine, Money Laundering," 58 CrL 1086, October 25, 1995).

In a statement Clinton said the U.S. is making strides in combatting crime and violence.

"We have to send a constant message to our children that drugs are illegal, drugs are dangerous, drugs may cost you your life -- and the penalties for dealing drugs are severe," he said.

"I am not going to let anyone who peddles drugs get the idea that the cost of doing business is going down."

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court, weighing in on an issue with racial undertones, ruled Monday that federal judges have broad leeway to impose shorter prison terms for crack cocaine

in a case that bolsters the argument for reducing the difference in sentences for crack and powder cocaine.

The court, by 7-2 votes in the crack case and one other involving drugs, upheld more lenient sentences imposed by judges who rejected federal sentencing guidelines as too harsh.

The decision was announced ahead of a vote scheduled for Tuesday by the U.S. Sentencing Commission, which sets the guidelines,

Earlier this year, using the clout that only major broadcast networks seem capable of mustering, CBS News contacted the governments of all 50 states requesting their official records of death by suicide going back 12 years. They heard back from 45 of the 50. From the mountains of gathered information, they sifted out the suicides of those Americans who had served in the armed forces. What they discovered is that in 2005 alone -- and remember, this is just in 45 states -- there were at least 6,256 veteran suicides, 120 every week for a year and an average of 17 every day.

MY RESPONSE:

I am a vietnam vet

Ever since i got out in august 1974 i have had a tough time finding stable work. The only real job i had was the C.E.T.A. job = comprehensive employment training act.
i was given in N. Calif working for parks and recreation and then solid waste, where in 1975 in redway Calif I started a recycling center as i picked through trash to separate bottles and cans.

Since being a UCMC soldier i found that i am the kind of person, who wants to serve others. Its ingrained in me. Many call me nuts. I don't know how to work so called regular jobs. I have been a volunteer off and on ever since. I was fortunate in one way moving to Garberville calif where we had many pot growers. that gave me something to smoke to allow myself the ability to hide from my past. I was also told never to mention my service because people would hate me. I kept quiet until this past year. Along the last 33 years i had many stops in VA hospitals. Many times i had cut my wrist. I have scars all over my left arm. I over dosed on tylenol and had my stomach pumped and hung myself and became a cocaine user and over-dosed many times in the 80's. I was told in 1999 i had HEP-C from the injections to prevent it in boot camp. I prepared to die and began to drink hard again, only to find out i was one of the so called lucky ones (15%) who was actually immune to it. Why am i still alive in beyond me. I cut my wrist many times just to get a bed at the VA. However, some VA hospitals did offer me food to eat. Finally in 2004 i was sent a check after i got out. My only friends are those who have died.
Today i volunteer my time for the Obama campaign. I sleep on an 84 yr old womans couch and cook for her to get food. I am her friend and she appreciates me. The very old seem to understand and well they do need help. I have done this since 2004, when i went back to N. calif again to find hope or pot to hide from my past. Today i am in Phila pa suburbs helping another woman.

I am just one and i could go on and on and tell you about how when i got my check i bought a RV to live in but gas got too high so i gave it away to another vet who got a big check than me. Along the way i picked up hundreds of vets along the roads and highways and i fed them.

You people need to understand soldiers like my Dad a deceased 2nd WW vet, who was the second wave at normandy (D-Day) don't have the ability to fit in to so called normal life. Yes there are a few and some of them get involved in politics and try to help others or they get corrupt.

What we need is a place a farm a home where we can work together and then reach out to others from a place of safety. http://www.farmsnotarms.org/

Barack Obama: A Call for Full Equality

Over the last several weeks, the question of GLBT equality was placed on center stage by the appearance of Donnie McClurkin at one of my campaign events. McClurkin is a talented performer and a beloved figure among many African Americans and Christians around the country. At the same time, he espouses beliefs about homosexuality that I completely reject.
The events of the last several weeks are not the occasion that I would have chosen to discuss America's divisions on gay rights and my own deep commitment to GLBT equality. Now that the issue is before us, however, I do not intend to run away from it. These events have provided an important opportunity for us to confront a difficult fact: There are good, decent, moral people in this country who do not yet embrace their gay brothers and sisters as full members of our shared community.
We will not secure full equality for all GLBT Americans until we learn how to address that deep disagreement and move beyond it. To achieve that goal, we must state our beliefs boldly, bring the message of equality to audiences that have not yet accepted it, and listen to what those audiences have to say in return.
For my entire career in public life, I have brought the message of GLBT equality to skeptical audiences as well as friendly ones. No other leading candidate in the race for the Presidency has demonstrated the same commitment to the principle of full equality. I support the full and unqualified repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. While some say we should repeal only part of the law, I believe we should get rid of that statute altogether. Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples. I will also fight to repeal the U.S. military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, a law that should never have been passed, and my Defense Department will work with top military leaders to implement that repeal.
As President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment. But I also believe that the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide on their own how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples - whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage. I will also place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of the Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes and a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. I have supported fully inclusive protections since my days in the Illinois legislature, when I sponsored a bill to outlaw workplace discrimination that expressly included both sexual orientation and gender identity.
That is where I stand on the major issues of the day. But having the right positions on the issues is only half the battle. The other half is to win broad support for those positions. And winning broad support will require stepping outside our comfort zone. If we want to repeal DOMA, repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and implement fully inclusive laws outlawing hate crimes and discrimination in the workplace, we need to bring the message of GLBT equality to people who are not yet convinced.
That's why I brought this message of inclusiveness to all of America in my keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention. I reiterated that message in the speech announcing my candidacy for President. Since beginning my campaign, I have been talking about GLBT equality on the stump, from rural farmers to Southern preachers. Just as important, I have been listening to what all Americans have to say in return. I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all GLBT Americans. But neither will I close my ears to the voices of those who still need to be convinced. That is the work that we need to do if we are going to move forward together. It is difficult. It is challenging. And it is necessary.
The American people have been poorly served by two terms of an administration that seeks to manipulate us through fear: fear over national security, fear over immigrants and fear over gay and lesbian couples in loving relationships. Americans are yearning for leadership that will put an end to the fear mongering and instead begin empowering us once again to reach for the America we know is possible. I believe that we can achieve the goal of full equality for the millions of GLBT people in this country. To do that, we need leadership that appeals to the best parts of the human spirit, rather than the worst. Together, we will achieve real equality for all Americans, gay and straight alike.

MR. RUSSERT: Let me ask you about the issue of gay marriage. John Lewis, who you called a living saint, said this: "I've heard reasons for opposing civil marriage for same-sex couples. Cut through the distortions and they stink of the same fear, hatred and intolerance I've known in racism and in bigotry.

"Some say let's choose another route and give gay folks some legal rights, but call it something other than marriage. We've been down that road before in this country. Separate is not equal. The rights of liberty and happiness belong to each of us and on the same terms without regard to either skin color or sexual orientation." You agree?

SEN. OBAMA: Well, look, here's what I believe. John Lewis is--his sentiments are exactly right that we have to provide equal rights for gays and lesbians in this country, and I have consistently fought for that. I was a co-sponsor of the human rights ordinance in Illinois that eliminated discrimination on the job, in housing and other areas for gays and lesbians in Illinois. I have championed every single piece of legislation that would expand the same rights to gays and lesbians. I have not said that I was a supporter of gay marriage, but I am a strong supporter of civil unions, and I would, as president, make absolutely certain that all federal laws pertaining to married couples--benefits pertaining to married couples are conferred to people who--same sex couples who have civil unions as well.

MR. RUSSERT: And yet you had a group of supporters on a Bible tour in South Carolina headed by a singer called Donnie McClurkin...

SEN. OBAMA: Mm-hmm.

MR. RUSSERT: ...who said that homosexuality was a curse and that he had been cured by prayer. Do you believe homosexuality's a curse?

SEN. OBAMA: No.

MR. RUSSERT: Do you believe that it is something that you are born gay and that--or that you can change your behavior?

SEN. OBAMA: I do not believe being gay or lesbian is a choice. And so I disagree with Reverend McClurkin. But understand, Tim, part of what I hope to offer as president is the ability to reach to people that I don't agree with, and the evangelical community is one where the Democratic Party, I think, we have generally seen as hostile. We haven't been reaching out to them, and I think that if we're going to makes significant progress on critical issues that we face, whether it's education or healthcare or energy or our foreign policy in this country, we've got to be able to get beyond our comfort zones and just talk to people we don't like. And--or just talk to people we like, or people that we agree with on every single issue. And so when I--one of the things that I've tried to do is to reach out to the evangelical community and tell them very clearly where I disagree. I've talked to African-American ministers. There's a problem of homophobia in the African-American community. I will go into churches, I will go into meetings with ministers and say, "I disagree with you on these issues. This is not how I interpret my faith." But the fact that we're having a conversation, I think, allows the possibly that I will change their minds, make them more tolerant of these issues. They may not agree with me on this, but ultimately, it allows me to bridge some of the cultural divisions that have, I think, prevented us from making progress in this country for so long.

With a good debate and an unprecedented raising of funds all in one day, it could be enough to propel Barack to the presidency. We could begin the process of restoring unity in our country. Most of all, we can restore Hope.

Here's a neat idea: make polluting companies pay for every ton of carbon dioxide they dump into the atmosphere—and then use the money to fund research into climate change, promote wind and solar power, and provide job training for workers in dirty industries.

That's the heart of Senator Barack Obama's new energy plan. Not surprisingly, industry is fighting hard for a very different kind of plan—one that awards companies millions of dollars of "pollution credits" for free. Governor Richardson has a strong plan to make polluters pay. Senator Edwards and Senator Dodd have said industry should pay for at least some of their pollution credits. Senator Clinton is the only one who hasn't made a commitment to any auction whatsoever.

But she's got a new energy plan coming out, and we need to let her know we expect whoever's the next president to stand up to polluters on this one.

Industry sees the writing on the wall. They know Americans want change, and change means limiting greenhouse gases in our air. So they're trying to make lemonade out of lemons—by turning climate change legislation into a massive program of corporate subsidies. They call it "cap and trade" and American can't afford it.

This is not just an environmental issue—it's a real economic one. There are literally billions of dollars at stake. A full auction of pollution credits would generate anywhere from $50 to $150 billion.

Please call Senator Clinton today and ask her to make sure polluters have to pay for pollution credits, so we can finance the transition to a clean energy economy.

I was there at 6am holding the best location for our Campaign.

Darrell Hyde was our best cheerleader !

I was out there with him but he had the chants !

The hillary campaign again broke the rules with giant signs and bull horns but were down the street. The politico interviewed me after i went down the street to confront the man with the bullhorn.

I made sure edwards people and gravel people were next to us with Biden on the other side to keep us from getting infected.

We had the hope sign posted exactly across the street from the front door of the debates above my 3 ft by 8 ft banner i bought back on march. The round signs laminated which were under the OBAMA08 signs on sticks looked great :)

We had two banners + 60 OBAMA08 signs on the guard rails.

Lastly ACT UP CAME MARCHING IN WITH AT LEAST 500 PEOPLE WITH SIGNS SHOWING THE EVIL HILLARY CLINTON'S HEALTH PLAN

It was great because hillay did have the outgoing crooked mayor streets gang helping her as she would have never had enough supporters without them.

The confrontation between the true people of color and many races of ACT UP versus the "paid" hillary clinton was so great.

The Hillary people looked so depressed when the 4 times amount of ANTI HILLARY SUPPORTERS OF ACT UP CAM MARCHING IN.
They had drums and burning sticks and mask and signs making Hillary look like the eveil woman she is. It was so great. ACT UP was a powerful force.

Obama supporters also chanted with JENA 6 SUPPORTERS TO HELP BRING ABOUT CHANGE FOR THE JENA 6 !

DARRELL HYDE our great cheerleader had a great chant 1 2 3 4 elect obama end the war 5 6 7 8 BARACK OBAMA IN 08

WE ALSO HADE A GREAT GROUP OF YOUNG TEEN FEMALES FROM DREXEL WHO HAD PRACTICED CHANTS WHICH REALLY HELPED THE CROD GET INSPIRED.

WE HAD THE MOST DIVERSE GROUP THERE. It was so wonderful and i am so happy for Phila for being there.

It's late, but I couldn't wait to give you all a brief account of the scene outside of the building at Drexel University where the Democratic Debate was held this evening. We arrived about 6 pm to find a large group of Obama supporters well equipped with signs, and banners, and even meatball sandwiches. Thanks to Daneille, our group of about 100 was positioned directly across from the main entrance to the building. I met supporters from Baltimore, Reading, and Philadelphia. There were lots of reporters, and cameras catching our chants of "1,2,3,4, let Obama end the war, 5,6,7,8, we want Obama in 08". A small group of Edwards supporters just down the street from us got a special treat when their candidate arrived got out and shook some hands. He was the only candidate that entered thru this main entrance, although everyone was hoping for a glimpse of some of the others, especially Obama. At one point, a small group of people including one person with a megaphone, (which is not supposed to be allowed), stood in front of the Hillary supporters, and gave a short speech. Whoever it was, the reporters seemed to think it was somebody important because they all came running(someone said it was Senator Lautenberg). It was disheartening to see that the Hillary supporters felt they didn't have to follow the same rules as everyone else, but it also made me proud to be an Obama supporter.After chanting and cheering and waving signs for 3 hours, we headed home to watch the debate on TV. (Only people affliated with Drexel could go to the debate, and there was a lottery to determine who got tickets). And that was actually the best part of the night because after watching it, I was again reminded why I was willing to be tired, hoarse, and also have a headlight missing from my car when I returned to the parking lot. Because of Barack Obama! And as an added bonus, the MSNBC poll which asked who won the debate came in at Obama 29%!!!!!Hillary 21% and ....I also took lots of pictures which I hope to post tomorrow if I can figure out how.Fired Up! PS: I had twice the space reserved but i did SHARE IT WITH EDWARDS SUPPORTERS AND GRAVEL SUPPORTERS AND THE ANTI PHILLY CASINO PEOPLE.

MORE OF MY THOUGHTS:

I felt it was best to make sure hillary people were wayyyyy down the street and i also felt its best to help Edwards people who will join us when Barack wins in Iowa.

The biden people had a large contingent and with the edwards people and Obama people we all united in a ***STOP THE WAR CHANT***

That was great and sent a great message to the debates and those viewing our rally.

For a time we had half our people over with tim russert holding signs and chanting etc and so our group was doing two major actions.

The hillary people tried to get their signs in front and center but there was no room for them so it was great i made sure to save these spaces for the other candidates supporters.

The biden people came 2nd about 11am and one edwards supporter from NC held the edwards space from 12 noon on and then gravels people came and i spilt the edwards space so gravel had a space.
The hillary people came with giant 2x4's and built giant stands they laid against the wall to hold their ILLEGAL signs up high but then i used a bicycle rack turned up like a ladder to climb and hang my giant 3 ft by 8ft banner on the wall and then i had to stand on my tippy toes on top rung of the ladder / rack to hang the HOPE SIGN the highest right across the street from the debate front doors and it was 4 ft higher than any other sign.

anyway we have to do what we can but we have to be legal and not stoop the the level of the low life clinton people who later moved their large signs to the racks / line. however, they were wayyyyyyyy down the street which was so great.

make sure you camp out at the nevada location and be ready to get the good exposure location.

Oct. 5, 2007 - The scene did not exactly reek of triumph. Just two dozen supporters had gathered at the union hall perched between a welding company and a gas station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The room was two-thirds empty, the sign-up sheets on the walls blank. But that did not deter Terry McAuliffe, the hyperkinetic chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, as he tucked into his speech at the seventh event of his long day. “The campaign is on fire. We’re doing great,” McAuliffe told the room.

McAuliffe can be forgiven his congenital enthusiasm. He had just helped Clinton post impressive third-quarter fund-raising numbers—outpacing her nearest rival, Sen. Barack Obama, in total dollar amount as well as the tally of new donors added to the rolls. A campaign that had already been taking on the aura of inevitability suddenly surged forward anew—as reflected in a fresh round of polls showing an ever-growing gap between Clinton and the competition.

But McAuliffe wasn’t resting on his laurels. “What happens in your state here is going to be a huge determinant of who the Democratic nominee for president is,” he said. “Don’t believe the polls. Four of the last six polls have put Hillary in the lead here. But we’re not in first place. We’re bunched up in a three-way tie … We’ve got to run like we’re 20 points behind.”

McAuliffe’s pitch is a sign of both the strength and the weakness of the Clinton campaign in Iowa.

Taking nothing for granted, the Clinton juggernaut dispatches a key lieutenant to canvas Iowa in a blue Chevy Cobalt, meeting small clumps of supporters other campaigns might view as hardly worth a major fund-raiser’s time. (McAuliffe says he extends his audience by making hundreds of calls to voters during his travel time.)

But despite the Clinton camp’s manifest advantages, they need McAuliffe on that road. The New York senator’s position in Iowa is much weaker than any other early voting state. While she may have opened up a daunting lead in national polls—33 points, according to the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll—she’s neck-and-neck with Obama and former senator John Edwards in the Hawkeye State. A defeat in the first-in-the-nation caucus could imperil her lead in other early states, if the pattern of previous elections is repeated. And an early loss would raise serious questions about her campaign’s biggest selling point: that she is strongest, most electable candidate in the field.

Even Clinton’s supporters in Iowa are nervous. Wally Horn, an Iowa state senator from Cedar Rapids, introduced McAuliffe at the union hall Wednesday evening. Horn, who has spent 35 years in the legislature, signed up with the campaign after persistent pressure from the candidate’s husband during the Clintons’ first campaign swing together in early July.

“He asked me three times in 15 minutes,” Horn said, recalling that Clinton had visited him as a sitting president in 1994. Clinton’s finger-wagging message for Horn was simple: “I want you to be for Hillary.” But Horn sounds more supportive of Bill than of Hillary. “You know when he walks in the room; you don’t need to look around, you just know he’s there,” he said. “What’s so sad, for me anyway, is he tries to hide it now because of Hillary. He can explode a room, but he has to keep low and small.”

Horn says he’s convinced that Hillary is ready to be president. He just isn’t sure that Iowans can be trusted to vote for her, even when they say they like her. “I was a [Dick] Gephardt supporter before, but people didn’t show up at the precinct caucus,” he said, referring to the former House Democratic leader from Missouri in the 2004 caucuses. “In Iowa, people are so nice they’ll tell you they support you, but then they don’t show up.

“This is what concerns me about Hillary. You almost know it’s a natural for people to get out for Obama to the precinct caucus. But Hillary is going to have to get her people there, and it’s not a natural.”

Horn’s views are supported by the recent NEWSWEEK Poll, which showed a big gap between support among registered Democrats and likely caucus-goers. Among all Democrats in Iowa, Clinton enjoys a 6-point lead over Obama. But among people likely to vote, Obama is leading by 4 points. That 10-point spread suggests that Obama holds an early advantage in organization and enthusiasm.

Over the next three months, much can change in Iowa; many caucus-goers typically make up their minds in the last month of campaigning. At this stage of the campaign four years ago, John Kerry was universally written off as dead in spite of his early front-runner status and his strong performance in the TV debates.

Clinton might yet pull away decisively from her rivals in Iowa. Or she may suffer a Dean-like crash. But for the Clinton campaign, the lack of obvious enthusiasm for the candidate is troubling. At the union hall in Cedar Rapids, only two members of the audience expressed a strong bond with the senator. One was an Arkansas transplant; the other had recently hosted a house party for the candidate.

But if that bothered McAuliffe, he didn’t show it as he primed the small crowd for a campaign swing by Clinton herself early next week. In his mind, Hillary is the only candidate who can defeat Republican Rudy Giuliani in states like California and New York. And only Clinton could lead the Democrats to a historic victory.

One supporter piped up asking for advice on how to answer a nagging question: why perpetuate the Clinton-Bush dynastic hold on the White House?

“I understand since 1980 there has been a Bush or Clinton on the ticket,” said McAuliffe, “and I understand that people raise that issue. People like something new. But with the unique circumstances we have in the world, experience has to trump everything else.

“You’ll always have candidates that come up as an alternative to what people view as the inside. But what is very unique now is it’s obviously war in Iraq. It’s Iran, it’s Afghanistan. You have Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar; all these countries have issues today. It’s about to explode in the Middle East! I just pray we can keep everything together until we can get a new president in office. I like new things, too. But when you’re in a difficult situation, I’ve got to go with someone who can do the job tomorrow. There’s no on-the-job training for Hillary.”

If that apocalyptic argument didn't drive Iowans to caucus, McAuliffe had one last plea.

“In three months, we can change the course of the world,” he said. “I’m asking you, can you give us an hour a day, two hours a day? In three months, this thing could be over, and if we don’t do it, we’re not going to win. We have got to fire people up.”

Bipartisan Bill to Expand Children's Health Coverage Passes Congress

Over the last few months, CDF activists have been contacting their Members of Congress to let them know that they support comprehensive health coverage for all children in America sending over 180,000 emails and making over 1,000 calls. Because of your hard work, we wanted to let you know that last week, the House and Senate passed a negotiated, bipartisan bill to reauthorize and expand funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Although the bill will only provide health coverage to 1/3 of America's uninsured children, it's a step in the right direction. CDF Issues Report and Holds Summit on America's Cradle to Prison Pipeline® Crisis

CDF recently issued a report, America's Cradle to Prison PipelineSM, to spotlight an urgent national crisis at the intersection of poverty and race that means that Black boys have a one in three chance of going to jail during their lifetime, and Latino boys a one in six chance of the same fate. Barack Obama laid out a bold and innovative plan to reform America's tax code so that it works for the middle class. Obama's plan provides a substantial tax cut for all working Americans, homeowners, and middle class seniors.

Barack Obama knows that the core principle of the American economy is advancing opportunity for individual Americans. But he made it clear that America is not keeping faith with the middle class. As new wealth is being created in our new economy, wages aren't keeping pace and costs are rising.

Obama made the case that our current tax code reflects the wrong priorities.

1. It rewards wealth instead of work.

A. Special interests have achieved huge tax breaks and loopholes that shift the burden from the well-off to working people.

B. This isn't good for Main Street or Wall Street. Because as Obama said – when ordinary Americans are denied opportunity, that pain has a way of trickling up.

2. Obama would restore fairness to the tax code to strengthen the American economy.

A. First, Obama would cut taxes for all working Americans. This income tax cut would be worth up to $500 per person, and $1000 for each working family. All told, 150 million Americans will get a tax cut. Because this credit would be greater than their income tax bill, the Obama tax cut would eliminate income taxes for 10 million working Americans.

B. Second, Obama would ease the burden on the middle class by providing a universal homeowner's tax credit.

NOTE; This will immediately benefit 10 million homeowners, who will get a break of 10 percent of their mortgage interest rate. The vast majority of these will be folks who make under $50,000 per year.

C. Third, Obama will eliminate the income tax for any American retiree making less than $50,000 per year.

NOTE: This would undo a tax increase on social security benefits that went into effect in 1993, and will eliminate income taxes for about 7 million Americans. The savings generated will be roughly $1,400 each year.

D. Fourth, Obama will simplify tax filing for middle class Americans. He'll put in place a system where 40 million Americans with a job and a bank account who take the standard deduction can do their taxes in less than five minutes.

NOTE: To save people time, worry and expense, the government will simply send these Americans prefilled tax forms to verify.

Barack Obama's plan will provide $85 billion in tax cuts to Americas' workers, seniors, and homeowners. Unlike President Bush, whose fiscally irresponsible tax cuts created record deficits, Obama has a plan to pay for his tax reform plan. He will close corporate loopholes

Newark [DE] Community Day (Organizing)The area's premier fall festival is an exciting event, which features fun for the entire family. It provides an outdoor venue (2 stages) for musicians and demonstration groups. Fine Art and Homemade Craft vendors will display and sell their creations. Antique autos will be at the Newark Shopping Center. A food court will have a variety of foods. Restaurants on Main Street will be open for regular food. Event is also to welcome students back to the University of Delaware.

We plan to have a booth with a table and Obama supplies. Stop in for a free bumper sticker if you volunteer.

Booth needs to be staffed from 10 am to 5 pm. Please volunteer for a specific hour or more.

Ya gotta check out what the collaboration between the Veterans for Obama Steering Committee and the New Hampshire campaigns top notch New Media Staff are coming out with.

After weeks of listening to the veterans on the committee, the staff has put together some poignant stories that really show how Senator Obama is dedicated to honoring the service of those that are currently under arms, veterans of all generations, and the families that have stood by our fine men and women in uniform. The words “sacred trust” are not merely words of triangulated political rhetoric to the New Hampshire Veterans for Obama Steering Committee and they can sense in their bones that Obama is a man of honor, a man of conviction, and of moral certitude. They can sense with hearts that have been touched by fire, that Senator Barack Obama is ready to be the next president of the United States . For a veteran, the Office of the Presidency is also the Command and Control Center of the Commander in Chief. Enough said!

Become a delegate-get 500 pledges or more

Think about being at the Democratic convention in august 2008. Imagine making your vote for Obama. Know that Obama picks his delegates (as do all the candidates) Be a part of his/herstory! Leave the convention with the biggest smile on your face.

How you say? Start getting signatures of voters in your district now. Let them know you want to be a part of a ground breaking movement and you need their pledge. In the mean time contact your states democratic party and get the needed info etc that will allow you with your signatures to make that vote for barack Obama.

This is a once in a lifetime experience to be able to vote for a candidate for real change.

Time to KICK IT UP A NOTCH !

Start now walking door to door and getting at the minimum double the names for you to full fill your pledge. (you will have to return later with the pledge form to get the signatures on the proper form but starting now will get you ready with most of thos voters names and addresses)

Be proud to know Barack Obama will pick you because you started and planned now.
