(CNN) -- Community organization ACORN is fighting back after allegations that it is trying to register voters fraudulently and to swing the presidential election for Democrat Barack Obama.

The group this week released a 30-second TV ad calling on Republican candidate John McCain to stop "attempts at voter suppression across the country."

It also said it was filing several lawsuits around the country to halt the alleged suppression.

Republicans have "challenged election officials and they've filed lawsuits in an effort to thwart these new voters -- our citizens -- from casting their votes on Tuesday. This effort must be stopped," Delaware ACORN board member Hugh Alleyne said during a news conference Wednesday.

The New York Times exposes the nutjob behind the "Obama is a muslim" email campaign. Here’s some excerpts:

An appearance in a documentary-style program on the Fox News Channel watched by three million people last week thrust the man, Andy Martin, and his past into the foreground. The program allowed Mr. Martin to assert falsely and without challenge that Mr. Obama had once trained to overthrow the government.

(Martin) is a law school graduate, but his admission to the Illinois bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.”

(Martin) prepared to run as a Democrat for Congress in Connecticut, where paperwork for one of his campaign committees listed as one purpose “to exterminate Jew power.”

(Martin) ran as a Republican for the Florida State Senate and the United States Senate in Illinois. When running for president in 1999, he aired a television advertisement in New Hampshire that accused George W. Bush of using cocaine.

A motion he filed in a 1983 bankruptcy case called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”

In another motion, filed in 1983, Mr. Martin wrote, “I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did.”

In an interview, Mr. Martin denied some statements against Jews attributed to him in court papers, blaming malicious judges for inserting them.

But in his “48 Hours” interview in 1993, he affirmed a different anti-Semitic part of the affidavit that included the line about the Holocaust, saying, “The record speaks for itself.”

The unmistakable momentum behind Barack Obama's campaign, combined with worry that John McCain is not doing enough to stop it, is ratcheting up fears and frustrations among conservatives.

And nowhere is this emotion on plainer display than at Republican rallies, where voters this week have shouted out insults at the mention of Obama, pleaded with McCain to get more aggressive with the Democrat and generally demonstrated the sort of visceral anger and unease that reflects a party on the precipice of panic.

The calendar is closing and the polls, at least right now, are not. With McCain passing up the opportunity to level any tough personal shots in his first two debates and the very real prospect of an Obama presidency setting in, the sort of hard-core partisan activists who turn out for campaign events are venting in unusually personal terms. "Terrorist!” one man screamed Monday at a New Mexico rally after McCain voiced the campaign’s new rhetorical staple aimed at raising doubts about the Illinois senator: “Who is the real Barack Obama?” "He's a damn liar!” yelled a woman Wednesday in Pennsylvania. See, you don’t need the truth or even proof on Fox “news,” just say “probably” and “I think” a lot and nobody will question you as long as you say what they want to hear.

It’s funny, Hannity argues that he simply had the anti-semite on his show just like he also has liberals on the show even though he disagrees with them—yet Hannity attacks liberals while lapping up everything that the anti-semite has to say without ever questioning him, asking for proof or challenging him on his views.

Only one problem. The quote is from Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American who founded the Alaska Independence Party. Inconveniently for Palin, that's the very same secessionist party that her husband, Todd, belonged to for seven years and that she sent a shout-out to as Alaska governor earlier this year. ("Keep up the good work," Palin told AIP members. "And God bless you.")

AIP chairwoman Lynette Clark told me recently that Sarah Palin is her kind of gal. "She's Alaskan to the bone ... she sounds just like Joe Vogler."

Good news from "Bush country"

I heard on NPR this morning they sent a few reporters on a tour through some of the battleground states. Driving through rural southern Indiana (Bush country), they came across a huge home-made Obama sign that someone had painted.

They noted that they were not only surprised at this, but also that it obviously took some effort and dedication to make this. It wasn't the only homemade sign they saw either.

It's amazing--so many "Bush" states are competitive and McCain's on the defensive, which obviously explains why he's on the attack so much.

What I think he should say during the debate:

Look, we could talk about the fact that I had a pastor who said some outlandish things—an issue that we all addressed during the primaries; we could talk about an acquaintance of mine, someone who sat on the same board of a charity, did some terrible things back when I was about eight-years old; we could talk about Sen. McCain’s being one of the “Keating five,” or the fact that Gov. Palin’s husband belonged to a group that said some rather hateful things about America.

Or we could talk about issues that really matter to the American people—like the economy, people who are out of work and losing their health care or a volatile stock market that’s eating up people’s retirement savings. We could talk about continuing the same failed policies of the past eight years vs. taking this country in a new direction.

I prefer to talk about the issues. I also prefer to run a positive campaign. Now, I will respond if attacked, and will continue to do so, but I think American people want us to focus on the real issues and not get distracted from the problems we face.

Sen. McCain and I have fundamental disagreements on the issues—I think THAT’S what the American people want hear about. What they don’t want to hear is mudslinging and sideshows that detract from a real and substantial debate about how to get this country moving again.

Some Republicans claim the media made Palin look bad through editing (although I didn't see any editing of her babbling nonsensical statements or the one where she just plain stopped in mid sentance).

HOWEVER-- if "filtering" is the problem, Palin could get a full hour, unedited interview on the Sunday morning talk shows. It's time to raise this issue and write to your local newspapers about it. Perhaps we could start protesting Palin's speeches and ask what she's hiding from.

In an interview with NPR, McCain tried to defend Palin's foreign policy (lack of) credentials, claiming he has consulted her in the past several times.

Yet McCain barely even knew Palin before choosing her. They had one brief meeting and talked on the phone one time--and yet he's consulted with her several times??

Does he really think he can get away with such baloney?

Yes we’re providing money to investment banks but we’ll be getting a large portfolio of mortgage-backed securities in return.

These are complicated investments that are hard to value in a slumping real estate market. Unlike investment banks, Uncle Sam has deeper pockets and can wait until the market stabilizes and the value of these assets recover enough to sell. We may even make a lot of this money back over time.

At the moment, the illiquidity of these securities is causing a major credit crunch to the point that even solid companies are having a hard time obtaining loans.

Who should care about this? Anyone who borrows money or work for a company that does—that means all of us in this credit-driven economy. If we fail to act on this problem it means higher interest rates and lack of borrowable funds for anyone with a mortgage, credit card or student loan.

Obama put it best—if the house next door is on fire you put out the fire first and then figure out what caused it and how to keep it from happening in the future.

Our banking system is on fire. It’s time to get out the hose.
