SUPPORT PRESIDENT OBAMA'S BUDGETObama supporters across the county have been calling their Congressional Representatives in unprecedented numbers and spreading the message that we need President Obama's budget passed quickly. In one day alone over 50,000 calls were made by volunteers! They are feeling the pressure and have said as much, but we can't let up. Simply go to Organizing for America's online call tool, plug in your street address, city, and zip code, and you will get a list of your Congressional Representatives and their contact information along with a sample script. Let's continue to get out the message to our electeds that the movement is still going, we're still strong, and we're not going anywhere!

Excerpts of New Director of the TN Democratic Party, Chip Forrester's Speech
forwarded by Lenda Sherrill
Following is an excerpt from Chairman Forrester's acceptance speech. He promises to organize in all 95 counties "from the precinct level up", including a 95-county campaign for governor in 2010. I think there may be an opportunity to involve CPO volunteers in this effort, but would appreciate your ideas and advice. Also, if you know of others who should be contacted in this regard, I will be happy to contact them - or contact them yourself and pass along their ideas. Thanks!January 24, 2009 Remarks - Chip ForresterI thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. I'm standing here today with this honor because of YOU!I'll be brief, but I do want to take a few minutes to make remarks about where I hope to take the Democratic Party with your help over the next two years.First and foremost, I want to renew my pledge to you that we are going to open up this party to everyone who believes in the ideals of the Democratic Party, the party of hope and change. We are going to make this the most inclusive political party in the state of Tennessee, which will enable us to build the grassroots organization necessary to elect a new Democratic governor and regain the majority in the House of Representatives and add Democratic seats to the state Senate in 2010.Beginning Monday I will start by setting up meetings with every stakeholder in our party to begin gathering your thoughts, your ideas, and your suggestions on how we need to move forward to unify and expand our Democratic party. I want to learn from the Governor, our Democratic congressional delegation members, the members of the House and Senate Democratic caucuses, members of Democratic organizations like the Federation of Democratic Women, labor leaders, teachers, professionals, community organizers, local officials, political activists, campaign workers from the Obama campaign and other campaigns, county chairs, the members of this state Executive Committee, and anyone else who wants to help us build a more effective Democratic party here in Tennessee. Early this year, I want to convene a Campaign Summit to examine the results of the 2008 elections. We need to look at what we did right and what we did wrong, and begin incorporating what we learn into a comprehensive strategy for 2009 and for 2010. Clearly we cannot continue to do things as we have in the past. Everyone and every group I mentioned earlier will be invited to participate in this Summit. From this Summit, we will emerge with a program of fundraising, new technologies, and grassroots organizing to truly build this party from the precinct level up. We need to quit talking about organizing and actually begin doing it; the successes and failures of 2008 have clearly demonstrated that fact. And we will organize in all 95 counties. We are going to run a 95 county campaign for Governor in 2010 with rejuvenated, rebuilt and re-energized county parties that will serve as the foundation upon which we build that victory. From this Summit, we will develop a clear message for what this party stands for here in Tennessee and better ways to communicate it. President Obama has demonstrated the power of message. We need to clearly express our values and ideals as a party if we hope to attract others to support those values and ideals. And from this Summit, we will develop a unity of purpose and a unity of vision which will guide us for the next two years and hopefully in the years to follow. Finally, I want to put the Republican Party on notice. The Democratic Party will no longer sit quietly by while the Republican Party runs racist, demagogic falsehoods against our values, our principles, and our candidates as they did this year against President Barack Obama, Nathan Vaughn, and other legislative candidates. When you lie about our candidates, our office holders, we are going to call you out as liars. There is no place in politics for such conduct. Robin Smith, Jason Mumpower, Bill Hobbs, and Chip Saltsman I tell you now: You are put on notice. As Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party I will not stand by and see this happen without a full frontal attack on the racist, smear tactics that you have used in these past campaign. Decent men and women in Tennessee are demeaned by your racist bigoted attacks and I will not stand for it and neither will the Tennessee Democratic PartyBe ready --I am putting you on notice now--Republicans in Tennessee who support these tactics!!The Democratic Party has always stood for the average man and woman against the forces of power, privilege, and elitism. We have stood for fairness and safety in the marketplace and in the workplace, we have stood for individual rights and freedoms, we have stood for equal opportunities for all Americans, we have stood for equality and justice for all. I am excited about the changes, the new direction I see occurring every day in Washington since President Obama was sworn into office just a few days ago. I still am feeling the "high" that everyone felt who made that historic trip to witness history in the making. I am energized by it and it will propel us all as we start our journey to do the hard work we must do here in Tennessee.Tennessee took a turn in the wrong direction this past November. It's up to us as Democrats to change that in 2010. Working together, the Tennessee Democratic Party can make those changes happen here.Again, thank you for honoring me with your vote and support for the Chairmanship of the Tennessee Democratic Party. I look forward to working with each of you and for you as we face the challenges ahead.

Please take a moment to read this article, then REREAD the last paragraph (page 2). Ask yourself, "is he right? Is momentum on his side? Where will they go next?" Also, several of the churches in Tullahoma have started a "Feed the Hungry" group with Trinity Lutheran providing a place to sleep as well as feed the homeless/hungry. The Tullahoma group will be discussing how to help with that effort as well as discussing health care options to present to the Obama administration. If you are interested in attending this meeting, please let me know by return email and I will put you in touch with others who might be interested in carpooling.I will close by saying a HUGE THANK YOU to Arlyn Ende and Anne Chenoweth-Deutsch for their outstanding leadership. We are also counting on each of you to keep the good ideas and information flowing. Please feel free to contact Marjorie or me at any time with your ideas, concerns and most of all your support and passion for change in our country. YES WE WILL!!Following, as promised, is the text of the letter from the Inaugural Committee:December 17, 2008Dear Volunteer,Every time our nation faces crisis, our national experience has shown Americans rise to the challenge. While government has an important role to play in helping rekindle our economy and addressing the problems of a distressed nation, President-elect Obama believes each of us, as Americans, have a responsibility to do what we can for our communities and fellow citizens. We are one nation. The United States is once again at a crossroads and that is why the President-elect hopes to use the occasion of his Inauguration to rally our nation to commit to service in our communities. We are asking for your organization’s participation in meeting this challenge. In 1994, Congress transformed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday into a national day of community service to further commemorate a man who lived his life in service to others. As a tribute to that legacy and the very real needs of our nation, the President-elect and Vice President-elect will launch a national organizing effort on the eve of their Inauguration to engage Americans in service. This national day of service will fall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 19, 2009 and, unlike past calls to service, President-elect Obama will ask Americans to do more than just offer a single day of service to their cities, towns and neighborhoods. He will ask all of us to make an ongoing commitment to our communities. Never has it been more important to come together in shared purpose to tackle the common challenges we face. The call will go to all Americans to organize service projects and join others at events in their communities. As the Co-chairs of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, we invite you and your organization to join other Americans to organize service projects in your communities. The Presidential Inaugural Committee will offer Americans a new website to help promote your events and for Americans to make their commitments, build communities, find opportunities to serve and share their results. These can be events that orient people to your organization's work, engage people in direct service, or bring people together to reflect on Dr. King's legacy and how they can commit to becoming more engaged citizens. To submit a service event that you will help organize, please go to http://www.pic2009.org/page/s/DS1We have a great opportunity to set the tone for the next four years and I know you will rise to the challenge. Thank you for all your support.Sincerely,William M. Daley Patrick RyanPenny Pritzker Julianna SmootJohn W. Rogers, Jr.
Lenda Sherrill will take over the weekly "e-blasts" of events and projects in our region. I'll post these weekly on this site and the new network, Tennessee Progressives and Activistis. http://tnprogressives.ning.com/ If you would like to also receive "e-blasts" directly through your e-mail, let me know and I'll make sure you are added to the list.

Cumberland Plateau for Obama and friends met this evening to continue the discussion of how to support the change we voted for on election day. Participants weighed in on local issues and how we might position ourselves to support the legislative agenda of President-elect, Barack Obama.
The request from Chicago Obama Headquarters was for us to identify, create, and commit to producing a service event before January 20, 2009. Common areas of interest rose to the surface. Food and warmth of members of our local communities this winter in a tough economy was number one.
The ideas for action ranged from modest to grand in scale. Food drive, assistance on utility bills, work with local restaurants, blood drives, free medical clinics, film showings, work to identify thoughtful local candidates, seeds/garden tutorials, transportation to Washington to be seen and heard, letter writing, and more.
Honing in on a realistic goal between now and January 20, two ideas were presented. A participant noted that the Tullahoma "Meals on Wheels" program is suspended for the few days surrounding Christmas and that a volunteer team might take that on in that community as well as Franklin other communiteis served. Several people will look into the need and post. Additionally, an awareness raising notice in papers about "rounding up"your utility bills in order to assist those unable to make payments this winter.
Keep an eye on our page for updated information. Also, Also, be sure to sign in on www.change.gov to weigh in with your ideas for the Obama transition team on this week's theme, "service."
Thank you to Nancy for leading our meeting and to the Tullahoma contingent for making a long drive and for your creative energy.
The whirlwind continues and a group met this evening to talk about the next steps for Cumberland Plateau for Obama. It was agreed that we should stay connected. Each person spoke to the way the campaingn work altered them personally and how they might move forward in their work locally. Communication is key in the coming monthes.
Be sure to check in to http://www.change.gov/ for projects needing our attention during the transition towards an Obama/Biden administration.
Thanks for all you did!
Barack-n-Roll Music Festival for change was a great success. The Culprits, Milele Roots, Chicks 4 Change, and the Bluestones played at Mountain Outfitters' Pavillion on Nov. 1 and 2. Thank you to the musicians, the volunteers, the Burnettes, and all of the fine folks who came out to support our community voting for change.
We have a handful of music festival shirts left - size large. Also a few different sizes of the Cumberland Plateau for Obama, Obama/Biden shirt. Send a message if you'd like one.
This morning we began our second weekend in our Open Air Headquarters. Open air it was with a brisk chilly breeze. Great turnout this morning including TN State Representative Candidate Bill Harmon from Dunlap. His bus came into town and ate lunch at the Smokehouse and came across the street to visit and took Obama visibility materials with them.
Our big sign in at the main Monteagle intersection is up and taller than the rest! Thank you Carlton and Archie.
Cumberland Plateau for Obama had a great opening weekend for the "Open Air Obama Headquarters in Monteagle. Lots of visitors from near and from many neighboring states visited our Obama Pavillion this weekend. We were blessed with super weather on Saturday and a steady stream of interested and interesting folks.
Sunday brought the added attraction of live music from, "Chicks for Change!" Homespun bluegrass, old-time, and gospel were a perfect addition to the easygoing afternoon visiting. We were challenged by a lovely, but persistent breeze. A fine collection of rocks were used to weight down everything from position papers, stickers, mike stands, and rally signs. Resembling a geology exhibit, these "bracks" played a significant role!
We have posted more dates for the Open-Air Headquarters and are looking for volunteers, musicians, and perhaps a snack vendor. Keep watch for updates about upcoming weekends and other special events.
The news is that the BIG sign is up! Carlton saw it tonight on his way back from Manchester. Unfortunatley, he was traveling without the camera. So, the first picture sent to me will earn a fabulous Obama-Prize!
Meanwhile, we have lots going on. New shipment of stickers and buttons arrived just in time for our weekend Open Air Headquarters. Come out and join the fun, Saturday 10-4 and Sunday Noon-4. Live music by "Chicks for Change" on Sunday, 1-3!
Live music: Chicks for Change, Sunday, October 12, 1-3 PM at the Obama Open Air Headquarters in Monteagle.
Join us every weekend between now and the election in our open-air Obama Headquarters on Highway 41-A in front of Mountain Outfitters. Volunteers wanted Saturdays 9:30-4:30 and Sundays 11:30-4:30. Keep checking these postings for live music, treats, and other special appearances. Visibility materials, answers to your Obama questions, and good community fun! Drop by often and bring your friends!
Our "Rummage Sale for Change" was a huge success! Through the hard work of over 30 volunteers before, during and after the sale, we were able to pull off this two-day wonder. The amazing generosity of the folks who donated goods for the sale created a wide variety of merchandise from the practical to the luxurious and all things in between. This was truly a team effort and only through such a collaboration could we have reached such success. The sale raised over $4500 to be used to increase awareness and visibility of Barack Obama's campaign for presidency of the United States in our tri-county region and nationally. Many thanks to those who donated items for the sale and to our enthusiastic customers. A heart-felt thank you is extended to the volunteers, who cleaned, scrubbed, publicized, priced, organized, registered voters, and provided hospitality. We are lucky to live in such vibrant communities in our corner of the Cumberland PlateauSincerely grateful, Christi Teasley, Monteagle TN, Arlyn Ende, Sewanee TN, Anne Cheneweth Deustch, Alto TN
