I'm going out doorknocking today.
Why, you ask?
Because it's a beautiful grey day and I feel that as a darksider I can bring even more diversity to this movement. I truly believe that the more people see folks of every race and color and class and subculture standing and working together to elect Barack Obama the greater impact it will have.
Yes we can. All of us. Even the weird ones. :-)
I just turned on MSNBC...they're already broadcasting live from Denver. I'm not a big fan of Chris Matthews, but he nailed it on the head just a moment ago when he compared the atmosphere in Denver to Christmas Eve.
I couldn't agree more. When I saw the screaming cheering crowds in the background I got so freaking excited. Seriously "fired up and ready to go!"
Have there been cheering crowds at the DNC in the recent past? has there been this level of enthusiasm...ever?!?
I'm going to spend every evening for the next five days all misty eyed and choked up, i can tell right now.
I am eternally grateful that Barack is holding a town hall in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Aberdeen is sixty miles from the farm on which I grew up. That's where resides the little bit of retail available to this the extremely rural area. THANK YOU, Barack, for giving those folks the chance to hear your message.
Now, on to St Pail.
OMFG.OMFG. GE kickoff at the X?!?! are you *bleep*ing kidding me?!? If it's a daytime event, I can't go, because I'm out of vacation time, and can't afford to take unpaid time. But if this is an evening event...oh my ever-lovin Goddess, I am so there!!!!
So i just noticed that Barack is having a Town Hall Event in Watertown, South Dakota. I grew up about a hundred miles northwest of Watertown. These folks need to be noticed by The Powers That Be. This is one of the rural areas that desperately needs industry. Needs living-wage jobs. Needs technology. Needs enlightenment. Needs a reason for the kids to stay after high school, or come back after college. Needs to learn to embrace diversity.
Good on you, Barack. For going where a "normal politician" never would.
I know it probably isn't. But I was up til midnight last night watching MSNBC. And if you were watching, you know the Tim Russert quote I'm about to pull out...
"We now know who the democratic nominee is going to be."
I'm sorry, polite language just is not enough to express how I felt when I heard those words.
Fucking stunned. Fucking overjoyed. It is all but over now. And I cannot wait to see this with my own eyes.
Hillary gained about 1 delegate last night.
NOT a big deal.
Don't you think she looks tired?
(if you know where this comes from...pass it on)
In case there are folks who haven't seen this site yet:
Like LOLcats? Of course, who doesn't like LOLcats!
Well, the folks behind www.icanhascheezburger.com created an Obama-centric site.
www.yeswecanhas.com
(i am not in any way associated with either site, except for loving LOLcats)
All right Super Tuesday folks, go do your thing!
Minnesotans, go do your thing at 6:30 this evening.
/Yes we can!
Well folks, tomorrow is Super Tuesday.
If you live in a state that will be voting/caucusing tomorrow, today might be a good time to touch base with friends and family. See if anyone needs a lift to the polls, or a few minutes of childcare. Remind folks how important it is to have one's voice heard. Maybe plan a get-together afterward to watch the results come in.
Remember, if you want to change the world, you have to actually go do it!
Yes we can!
Holy sh*t. Seriously. First off, i got to the Target center at noon. There was already a line stretching 3/4 of the way around the building. By the time the doors opened, the line extended around the building in back, and clear up the pedbridge on the parking ramp back behind the TC, where there's some construction going on.
[exaggeration for humorous effect using local references]
Line went halfway up into the North Loop i swear to God.
[/exaggeration]
The speech itself was impressive. The thing that strikes me most about Obama's delivery is that he uses lots and lots of "we" and very little "I" . I like this. I also like the way he expressed the issue of affordable higher education: "People coming out of college have 30, 40 thousand dollar loans to pay off. They have a mortgage and they don't even have a house!"
I'm one of those people, so this really resonated with me.
All in all, a very inspiring, very rallying speech. I really get the impression that this man believes what he's saying.
So, it's speech day. I am out of bed, thanks to my cat. I've swapped out the ink in my printer so I could print my e-ticket; and I've checked that my super-low-end digital camera doesn't have a "low battery" signal. I don't know what time I should head downtown. I'm thinking an hour and a half before doors. I don't want to have to hang out downtown waiting for doors, but at the same time, I want to get a good seat/spot/whatever.
So if you see a round redhaired darksider chick looking bored, come up and say hello! Wave at me if i have my headphones on and tell me you read my Obamablog. I might take pictures of the atmosphere before the speech as well.
So, I got an e-ticket to see Obama speak on Saturday, Feb 2 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. This location is crazy convenient for me, It's right off my normal bus route. I'm hoping to bring my super-low-end digital camera and take pictures.
Also, I HATE THIS TEXT EDITOR.
Anyway, about the title of this blog; Other than voting, I've never actually participated in the electoral process. That is, I've never volunteered, never attended a campaign speech, never donated.
This is not to mean I've never been politically aware. I'd donated small sums to groups like Greenpeace, NARAL and Amnesty International...but that was a million years ago in high school.
Most of my lack of interest has been due to the lack of a candidate worth more than the twenty minutes it takes to vote. There hasn't been anyone worth getting fired up about in a long time. I'm also one of the least socially-inclined people I know. So this is something of an experiment for me. I donated $13.01 to a fellow Farker's matching-funds donation page, then i registered here myself.
I'm hoping that Mr. Obama's speech on Saturday validates my decision to donate and register here. I'd like to se a political candidate worth getting fired up about in my lifetime.
