John McCain has offered US $50/hr to pick lettuce in Yuma this summer- because well, he thinks we American People won't lower ourselves to picking lettuce for a measley $50. per hour (I'm literally trying to find out how to apply- should we call him? Send him job applications?..

Now here's a personal note: I am a single mom- I've been a single mom for all but 3 of the last 30 years. I've raised two sons, and my 3rd and youngest son is 9. My eldest graduated from law school 2 years ago and my middle son is a bartender. I have never earned more than $9.50/hr in my 50 years of life, in my 35 years of employment. I've worked to feed my family- and there are probably not too many jobs I haven't done, nor for certain any that I wouldn't do (within the law obviously). For a few of the years that I worked and raised my sons, I also attended and paid for college. I'm an army veteran, so I was lucky in that my GI Bill covered most of my college.. although I didn't finish due to time, energy, family.
Two years ago, at age 48 during a minor operation- the doctor erred- causing medical damage that I am still working at recovering from- forcing me to go on social security. I fully expect to return to working within the next year.
My point in sharing this: I doubt I'm alone in the struggles I've had, in an effort to take care of my family over the years. I am flabberghasted that John McCain could be so ignorant of what people like myself, particularly veterans, live through on a day to day basis... that in his mind $50.00 an hour to do anything ANY type of work- would be looked down upon by the majority of working or unemployed Americans. He does not know us.
On Monday I had to take a very long drive across our state.. I thought about this campaign.. and I talked a lot to my mom, my son who were with me. They support BO, but don't know all the 'goings-on' that many of the bloggers and the more in-depth supporters are aware of. I told them about all of you- how quickly you are willing to protect our candidate- how you stand up to the pundits and the media and the lies.Then I thought about Senator Obama- How he walks on that stage pretty much everyday- and he smiles. How he has been smeared, attacked, lied about from his character to the color of his skin, from his birthplace to where he attended school, his religion, from his relationship with his parents and his grandparents to how he raises his daughters, from decent well-spoken words of his strong gracious wife to the experience he's accumulated since he left home as a young man. He has been smeared for everything he has said and done, and for everything he hasn't said and done. And then folks, supporters and non-supporters have the audacity to say he's not tough~ you need to wish you had a fingertip of the toughness it has taken for this man to press on, and not to merely press on BUT to do it with dignity, class, self-respect, honor, courage in proportions most of us have not seen too frequently in our lifetimes- most especially in politics.. and he does it with tact. And he manages to do that and inspire us and motivate us.Have you blogged before Bartack Obama came along? have you knocked on a stranger's door and spoke to them about our country before Barack Obama? Have you picked up a phone and called someone in Texas or Arkansas or West Virginia before Barack Obama came along? Have you donated money, money you normally may have used for your lunch, or a movie.. or even a bill- before Barack Obama came along? Are you 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or 90 and just voted in your first ever primary.. possibly for Barack Obama?Then you have nothing to fear- because we- WE are becoming stronger, more courageous and far smarter than we've ever been before. And he HAS LED us ~

A lot of sad hearts tonight.. and there may be more to come.. it's inevitable that we're gonna have some very tough battles and steep steep hills to climb. We've all learned that people aren't nice, I mean we learned it in kindergarden right? Right?? But we're learning it on a much grander scale these past weeks, months- and when we've thrown ourselves into the fire so to speak, we will get burned.. The truth is people lie, people discriminate, people cheat.. even women Senators who want to be president. I believe that though we may be sensitive to the duplicity and crookedness that goes on in these "campaigns" - Barack Obama isn't. He told us from the beginning this would be very very hard.. I realize he wasn't just talking about the battle he'd face once he becomes President- but just the battles we will all face getting him to the Presidency.. He is up for this - he is and believe it or not I'm pretty sure he knows exactly what he's doing to get there- he knows how to do this, okay? He has struck me from the get that he's quite substantial- and he has prepared for the looonnnggg journey of highs and lows this country is poised upon in getting through to November. He prepared well. No he doesn't answer to every jab, punch and poke that the opposition slams on him daily- sheesh he really does have bigger things to do than swat every little fly. Hang in with him guys- we have been swatting a few flies ourselves- the letters, the comments you leave when the media shows their constant bias-the massive reading we all do to battle out Hill's lies, and all the footwork and the phone calls and motivation to get entire STATES of strangers to talk and connect and VOTE! My God in one year this whole country has been turned up-side down.. over voting!! Over one voice, one voice that spoke to us.
And yet we know it's more than that- it's about racism-and unifying-and knocking down the walls of bs that have run rampant in this country for all of our lifetimes. Ripping out the stereotypes and the divide and conquer mentality that just does not work. I know that we are sick of being afraid of foolish things- and Barack Obama began this by talking about what we were all feeling in our hearts anyway.. He lit a fire and we are the flames.
I have committed myself to Senator Obama and to all of you until the last vote is counted. period.
