Today is Sunday September 7, 2008, the day after the Hurricane had washed out all our canvassing and voter registration plans for two days and I was down and trying to think of what I could do today. I decided to go back out even though it would be muddy and a mess.
On my way to a Jazz Festival in West Orange, New Jersey, this nice lady blew her horn and yelled at me in a line of traffic "Where did you get your Obama bumper sticker?" I yelled back pull over. So we both pulled over on the side street, and out jumped this 4 ft 9 in. little lady. She says, "I'm 90 and I'm an Obama supporter and I need a bumper sticker." I said "God Bless you!" I told her that I didn't have any bumper stickers, so I gave her the button I was wearing and a poster I had on the back seat of my car with Barack at the Emerson Barbershop. She was all smiles. We introduced ourselves and talked for a bit and she drove away saying she was signing up to go register voters with the League of Women Voters!
She was the demographic (older, caucasian and female) that the Media is now saying would be voting for McCain/Pailin. She said she was a strong supporter for Obama from the beginning and Palin can't change that. I drove away with renewed enregy and headed off to register voters at the Jazz Fest. FIRED UP! READY TO GO!
OBAMA/BIDEN 08
Georgia Daniel of Paterson, and Sandra Mordecai of West Orange, both of the NorthernNJ4Obama group, attended the Democratic Convention in Denver Colorado 2008 from Wednesday August 27, to Saturday August 30, 2008.
They signed up on a whim and a prayer to be volunteers and were chosen to serve in this historic event. Georgia stayed with her brother in Denver and Sandra stayed with a friend's sister (whom she had never met before)in Parker. Although we had a rental car, our main mode o f transportation was the 83L bus, the 16th Street Mall Shuttle and the Light Rail to the Convention Center, The Pepsi Center and Invesco Field. Traffic was a huge problem and parking very expensive and difficult to come by. Public transportation was the most efficient and effective way to move around the convention sites given the security perimeter around most of the convention locations.
Using public transportation we met lots of local people who were very friendly. They had lots of good things to say about Obama, the campaign and the improvements to the area because of the convention. The reception we received from the local Denver people was amazing; they were so open and generous in offering help with directions, identifying key cultural events and other points of interest. The locals were amazed at so many visitors to their city and were just generally very welcoming.
It was such a historic and nostalgic trip for both of us. After being on the campaign trail since last year, we understood the milestone that was about to unfold. As African Americans, we wanted Dr. King's Dream to become a reality and on the 45th anniversary of his "I Have a Dream Speech," it did.
On Thursday night, as Senator Obama walked out on the stage, thunderous applause erupted from over 85,000 supporters and swept though the Mile High Stadium. With a seven minute standing ovation, we filled the stadium with our love and hope for a more brighter and secure future. During Barack's speech, we sat in the bleachers at Invesco Field, and as we looked around us, we discovered there was not a dry eye to be found! We were all shedding tears of joy, expressing thanks and gratitude for this moment in America's history. For all Americans, it was a moment when time stood still.
Senator Obama reminded us that we were all Americans regardless of race, creed or religion, whether red or blue state, independent or not, straight or gay, male or female. He spoke of our common causes and goals and our need to continue to live up to our potential and to always strive to do better and to give back to our communities whenever we can. He laid out his plan for this great nation and reminded us that McCain, although a great patriot, equals Bush's third term.
The power point slide was just as powerful, showing pictures from his life story with his family, from infant t o young man to adulthood and of his rise from the son of a single mother on food stamps and welfare to a Harvard graduate who would become the Democratic Presidential Candidate for the White House.
The same can be said of Michelle Obama's speech on Monday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. She was charismatic, smart and gracious and the whole world met our very first potential African American First Lady! She spoke of her life growing up with a disabled father and a strong mother and their daily struggles to make available, opportunities for her and her brother. These opportunities resulted in both of them graduating from Princeton and Michelle going on to graduate from Harvard Law School.
It was apparent to all why Barack fell in love with her and why Barack Obama is so successful. There is a saying that "beside every great man is a strong woman," and Michelle is that; so is Barack's Grandmother and so was his Mother. Barack's concern for women's issues started with his Mother, Grandmother and continues with his wife, and two daughters. It is apparent in the Democratic Platform - Senator Obama will be our first President with women's issues prominent on his agenda.
On Wednesday night, we were also able to attend the VIP reception for Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden after he spoke at the Pepsi Center. Senator Biden and his wife Jill were introduced by Howard Dean to the crowd of high-end campaign donors, staffers, volunteers and special guests. We all enjoyed great food, music and mixed and mingled with many people of like minds from across the nation.
There were various celebrity (John Legend, Will I Am and Fergie to name a few) parties that we were not able to attend but heard about. Additionally, there were some sightings of George Clooney, Oprah, Stevie Wonder, and Jennifer Anniston in "Lodo" or Lower downtown as downtown Denver is fondly referred to.
We took many pictures, including those of ABC, MSNBC and BET news personalities and of other volunteers and supporters whom we met on this campaign journey.
Downtown Denver was beautiful with flowers every where and many sidewalk vendors selling everything "Obama" for you to purchase as a memento of the trip. These items included t-shirts, buttons, hats, posters, cups, pens and Obama bobble head and stuff filled dolls.
For economical reasons, we extended our visit for an extra day. Georgia stayed in to visit with her brother and new sister-in-law, while Sandra with four Obama and DNC volunteers with whom they worked side by side that week, explored the Taste of Colorado in downtown Denver. The event showcased various art& craft booths, international foods, three music stages (jazz, heritage and rock'n roll) and fun activities for all ages.
It was a great trip. We hope you enjoyed this glimpse of our visit to the Democratic Convention in Denver. There were truly some phenomenal blockbuster events that we experienced with our colleagues and new friends.
An added bonus was having extra time to enjoy the sights, sounds and taste of this wonderful Mile High City in Colorado.

I made several new friends in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. In the past several months, we canvassed on foot and by phone in so many states we lost track. We did GOTV and mingled and planned at watch parties across New Jersey. We donated large and small amounts. We bought fashionable Obama gear. We even marched across the bridge from Lambertville, New Jersey to New Hope, PA. We went to the Women for Obama Weekend in Glenside, PA and canvassed in Philly and met Judge Hackett, Jessica Lange, Caroline Kennedy and Congressman Conyers at a Philly fundraiser. Some even met Michelle Obama and Barack Obama. Some of you drove/flew to Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, North Carolina and beyond.
We did good. We worked hard. We came together with a common goal - Barack Obama for President. This is an amazing time in our history and we can tell our kids and grandkids that we helped to bring about change.
Barack Obama for President!
Whoo Hoo!
