The last time I was involved in an elections campaign was shortly after leaving the Marine Corps and starting school at Cal State San Bernardino. I was a neophyte when Congressman George Brown came to campus to tell us why he was running for the Senate against John Tunney. I was impressed with George Browns soft speech, his rational discussion of the issues of the day, which included the still ongoing war in Vietnam and he didn't sound like many politicians I had heard up to that time.
He asked for help in raising funds and working to support his election campaign against a wealthy Republican. I volunteered to work on his local campaign with other students who distributed flyers, posted posters for miles in every direction, stuffed envelopes for mailings to voters and generally worked my ass off for a candidate I believed in.
He lost. I was disheartened and disappointed. How could so much hard work not result in the election of the best man? I've learned a bit about politics since then.
Now we have a candidate for office whom, I believe represents new hope for our system and an opportunity to correct the course of the past 8 years. Beyond damage control, I believe we have an opportunity to significantly improve our economy, healthcare, foreign relations, end an unjustified war and prevent more of the Neocon agenda from destroying what makes America great, the willing participation of it's citizens in decision making and goal setting for the future.
