I truly believe in the power of prayer and thank everyone for all your hard work.

Much more work has been done than is possible to reflect on our Web sites, but we stepped up to the plate to commmit ourselves without the need for self-promotion.

I have met some truly talented people during this campaign from all over the country who I would not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet if it were not for this, our information age of the Internet.

GOOD NEWS ON ELECTION DAY 2008

Apologies, I've been in doors sick all week (just my luck) & I am just getting up this morning. However, nothing will keep me from pushing myself to the polls today.

My condolences to Senator Obama and his family re: the loss of his grand-mother. I admire his strength at this difficult time.

I pray that everyone will continue to donate the financial support that Mr. Obama will need to run & win again in 2012.

Even after our victories today, our work is still not done.

Stay in-tune. Stay in touch. Stay involved.

Someone shared this with me once. I think I will share it with you (including my own additions/insertions) as I read & meditate this morning, before starting my day:

FROM MY MOUTH TO GOD'S EARS. . . .

Father, I come before you this morning to thank you for waking me up this morning. I enter into your courts with thanksgiving and your gates with praise. I declare, Father, that this is the day that YOU have made and I shall rejoice and be exceedingly glad in it.

Father, I thank YOU for all of your blessings. I do not take any of your generous blessings for granted, but commit myself to performing every task assigned to me as unto YOU and not unto man. I will show myself a faithful steward over what you have given me and in return, the blessings of God shall abound in my life. For your word says a faithful man shall abound in blessings.

Give us strength, Lord, and move in us through this day, regardless of circumstances or situations. Help us to operate in the fruit of the Spirit at all times. That means, when we feel like losing control of our tongues, whether it is to speak forth gossip, to curse man or anything that is considered corrupt communication, we won't because your spirit abounds in us and...YOU said, "I am the light...and let my light shine".

We choose to let our lights shine as edification of YOU and anything that does not edify you, Lord, we will cast away.

Thank you, Father, for being the Rose of Sharon in our lives, our banner, our shield and our strong high tower. You are the one who fights our battles; therefore we don't have to. Instead of trying to handle difficult situations or people ourselves, we'll turn them over to YOU, Lord. We know you will work it out for us, because you care that much for us. We know we will never find anyone to be as good to us as you are. We love you, Lord.

We pray for new leadership today, Lord. We pray for positive change. As we pray for strength and guidance today for ourselves, we also pray the same for the Obama family. We pray that you bless Senator Obama's deceased grand-mother today, Lord, and continue to bless and protect President Obama and his family tomorrow, Lord. This is also a prayer for balance, Lord: Strength, yet peace. Empowerment, yet collectively...A collaboration to achieve & reflect only the best of ourselves as one people of one nation.. .A nation admired by others abroad, not feared nor despised.

In Jesus' name, I pray, while I am aware that others may call on you as Jehovah, or Allah, or Jah, or Buddah, or names unknown to me, or simply as God. In every tongue of every culture and religious background I pray that we feel the connection that we are all praying as one people for the same cause. I pray that those who do not believe in you (or prayer) will stop to simply meditate today. This is also a prayer for positive energy, this day forward, Lord And, without further delay,

LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS THIS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2008

THIS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2008

Maryland Voting Rules

Voter Registration Form:
Forms can be found here.

Deadline to Register:
21 days prior to the election (Oct 14, 2008).

Voter Eligibility:
In order to register to vote in Maryland, individuals must: be a US citizen; be a Maryland resident; be at least 18 years of age by Election Day; not be under guardianship of mental disability; not have been convicted of a felony; not have been convicted of buying or selling votes.

Identification Requirements:
Individuals must fill out the driver’s license section or provide the last four digits of their social security number on the voter registration form.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Registrations should be mailed to the voter’s local County Board of Elections. A list of County Boards of Elections can be found at here. Forms cannot be faxed.

How to Register Others:
In order to register voters, individuals must become a Voter Registrar Volunteer. In order to become a Voter Registrar Volunteer, individuals must receive a ten-minute training at their local County Board of Elections. A list of County Boards of Elections can be found at here. The training will provide the Voter Registrar Volunteer with any other necessary information involving the requirements of registering voters.

Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting is available. No excuses are required.
Excuses: No excuse is required on the application, but voters must affirm on the oath that is returned with their voted ballot that they "will be absent or unable to vote in person in the election."

Application Process:
Applications for absentee ballots can be found here. Applications should be turned in to the voter’s local County Board of Elections. A list of local County Boards of Elections can be found here.

Dates:
Applications for absentee ballots are due on the Tuesday before the election (Oct 28, 2008) at 4:30pm if mailed and 11:59pm if faxed. A late application (past the above due dates) can be filled out in person at the voter’s local County Board of Elections. Absentee ballots are due at 8pm on Election Day.

No early voting is available.

Mr. McCain is Not Insane!

How can John McCain run a political campaign platform based solely upon the accomplishments of his father and grand-father, instead of his own, and expect to be taken seriously?

Talk about elitist! How stereotypical is it for the military "brat" to feel so entitled and so super-privileged to just jump in and earn the votes of the American public-at-large based upon all of his family's accomplishments vs. his own!

If this mentality is not out of touch, I don't know what is! From a distance, it appears to mimick that old concept of "royal blood", but in a democratic society???

Further, John McCain appears to be hopelessly out-of-touch with the economic realities of this country, as though he has been on leave for about. . .oh. . . eight years or so! A tour of duty may have served Mr. McCain greater good as a presidential hopeful!

It is preposterous to define the American middle class as $3 Million dollar a year producers! Is this presidential hopeful really that naive, dishonest or on very strong medication?

When Mr. McCain looks us (so paternally) square in the eyes and calmly chuckles that the fundamentals of our economy are strong, I can't help but recall a kid in a childhood storybook exclaiming that the Emperor is wearing no clothes! I immediately create a nursery rhyme of my own: Food! Gas! Homes! Crash! Then, I feel compelled to cry myself to sleep.

Woe be unto us to permit another administration to pre-plan its own retirement strategy at our nation's expense! You see, granting multi-millionaires like himself tax breaks now, means targeting business opportunities to all of his "peeps" throughout his tenure, in order to guarantee pockets of silver lining upon his retirement from the white house later. They all will earn a heaven-of-a-lot more in 4 years than most of us will ever earn in a lifetime! Whoopi! Let's party, huh? Are you excited?

Senator Barack Obama's proposal to put the middle class (the backbone of our country) first just makes more sense:

A middle class tax cut that gives 95% of working Americans a tax cut of up to $1,000, I'll take that!

An emergency energy rebate to help cope with rising gas prices, I'll take that!!

A $4,000 student tax break to pay for tuition in exchange for doing 100 hours of community service, I'll take that!!!

A minimum wage increase, I'll take that!!!!

Then, index the minimum wage increase to inflation, I'll take that too!!!!!

It's no rocket science that the clear choice is Barack Obama, the question is ARE YOU REGISTERED TO VOTE?

Dear Sir/Madam:

Please pull the false political attack ad currently attacking Senator Barack Obama in your markets to force the candidates to stick to the issues. Slander is still slander- even in the midst of a political campaign.

The election is merely right around the corner now. We do not have time to waste on any more political entertainment. We have a president to elect! It's time to really get down to business now. The future of our country now dangles on our collective wisdom to focus on who the leadership of our nation will be in . . a month? Every nation in the world is on the edge of its seat awaiting the outcome of this/our greatest immediate responsibility. Are we the only ones on the planet not taking this responsibility seriously?

No more mirrors and smoke screens! We are truly running out of time. We need to stay focused on FACTS to help us to restore the health of our great nation as well as the world view/perception of our dwindling integrity.

"The" NRA ad purposefully misrepresents Mr. Obama's position on illegal guns, when in fact Mr. Obama has repeatedly defended the individual right to bear arms created by the Second Amendment. This ad is not fit for broadcast, because it is deceptively designed to scare and mislead voters.

There is no room on American television for this type of propaganda. I hope you will exercise your legal authority to prevent the broadcast of false and misleading advertising.

What is your position in the moment of truth?

Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

She was elected Alaska 's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5
She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species--she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7

What also strikes a chilling cord with me is a flashback memory of John McCain televised as a guest on Barbara Walter's daytime talk show: The View. Did anyone other than me hear John McCain's description of the Vice President's role? John McCain's expectation of the Vice President's role was offensive whether the appointee is male or female. Not to mention DANGEROUS! Did ANYONE out there see & hear this other than me? Of course he tried to pass his comment off as a joke by chucklin, but no one was quite sure whether he was actually joking or not. Of course, The View's staunch young Republican talk show host (Elizabeth is her name?) attempted to cover for his comment by laughing in hopes that everyone in the audience would take McCain's comment as a joke.

I'd love to find out how to get a transcript of that particular episode of the View.

To put McCain's comment on "The View" re: the Vice President's role into context with his running mate selection, should ANGER and alienate those women, if they have any self-respect or common sense.

Who can help us retrieve that comment? (Something to the effect that the Vice President's role is to do what he says!)

Anne, I agree that she represents a threat to women's right to choose. Yet it is important to understand what McCain's true intentions were with her selection. Since the primaries, McCain has had trouble securing support among the radical right with many openly threatening to boycott the convention and stay home in November if he chose a pro choice vp. What McCain did with Palin is close ranks with the radical right of the party and galvanize their enthusiastic support. Her views on so many issues puts her to the right of Mike Huckabee!!! A read of the right wing blogs and the response of Rush Limbaugh has them all gushing with joy.
McCain's right ward tilt versus a move towards the center puts his campaign in as much jeopardy as if he had placed Huckabee as his running mate. On so many of the key issues he has either abandoned any attempt at moderation or has embraced a set of forces that view him with great disdain and suspicion.
As far as I can see, we have the opportunity to draw on these distinctions and capitalize on our momentum by pushing forward the themes that Obama highlighted in his brilliant speech. Our fire must stay focused on McCain and how HE is against women's right to choose, equal pay etc...
We must avoid the temptation to enter into a Palin centered attack strategy which is exactly what these zealots are looking to provoke. Its the same old God, Guns and abortion wedge issues they are looking to make this campaign about.

Political leaders from more than 100 countries joined the Democrats at their national convention. As VOA's Kent Klein reports from Denver, the visitors have been taking part in a forum on the democratic process, and they will return home with new ideas about ways to strengthen their democracies.

More than 500 elected officials, current and former heads of state, cabinet ministers, party leaders and diplomats are part of the International Leaders Forum. A non-profit group called the National Democratic Institute sponsors the forum every four years, in conjunction with the Democratic National Convention.

The leaders have been hearing from American experts, and talking with each other, about how to make and keep democracy strong. Nigerian Senator Ken Nnamadi, a former Senate president, says he has learned a great deal in the forum seminars, and has learned even more from watching the Democrats' convention.

"There is a lot for the world to learn from the United States, their democratic process," he said. "Here we have come to learn that the process is a lot more important than the outcome."

Seminars at the forum concentrate on numerous aspects of American democracy. Among them are the role of debates, the news media, and television advertising in U.S. campaigns. They also include a look at the U.S. role in the world, and efforts to fight global poverty.

The visitors have been hearing from speakers such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former Irish President Mary Robinson, and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright, the Institute's chairman.

Hanna Teteh, the communications director for an opposition party in Ghana, believes interacting with other countries' political leaders will help her country solidify its young democracy.

"We are continuing to have to cope with those challenges, including how to ensure that our democracy remains credible, in spite of the various interest groups and pressure groups that come together to try to achieve a particular result," said Teteh. "So to that extent, I think that the interaction has been very useful."

Nicaraguan opposition lawmaker Edmundo Jarquin also finds strength in talking with supporters of other developing democracies.

"In several places democracy is facing problems," he said, "but there is enormous solidarity between all the democratic movements here in this hemisphere and around the world. Nobody chooses giving up, in regard to the problems democracy is facing in their countries."

Among the leaders observing the American democratic process in Denver is the prime minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam. He says he hopes to continue working with the National Democratic Institute to make changes at home.

"We need to strengthen procedures for elections in Mauritius," said Prime Minister Ramgoolam. "It's very good, it's very transparent, but I think we can improve on them. And in fact, NDI is bringing a team to have a look at where we can improve our system."

The nomination of Senator Barack Obama as the first African-American major-party presidential nominee was of particular interest to many of the visitors, especially those from Africa. But Nigeria's Ken Nnamadi says the story resonates around the world.

"Regardless of your color, your age, your shape or size, if you work hard and have a big dream, America is a country that shows that you can realize your dream here," he said. "And that means a whole lot for the rest of the world. It's not just because of Obama, it's for everybody."

The International Republican Institute conducts similar programs in conjunction with the Republican Party, and the two organizations often work together.

CELEBRITY BEEF HAS NO BITE!

I don't understand what the punch line is re: the attacks on Mr. Obama recently. . . using the word "celebrity" as some sort of stick or stone to name bash him.

I guess I finally understand what is meant by the word "politics".

The word celebrity is a "good" word when associated with some people, uh, MOST people in the past!

Now, somehow the word "celebrity" has become a "bad" word if associated with Mr. Obama. Huh????? (Yes, my eyes are squinted and my nose is all "squinched" up when I say, "HUH??????" LOL! Is "squinched" a word?

What about President Ronald Reagan?
1. Celebrity
2. Actor
3. Famous
4. Hollywood
5. etc.

The Clintons intentionally ran the majority of Mr. Bill Clinton's ENTIRE presidential campaign utilizing celebrity endorsements.
1. Pop singers/performers
2. Lots of Baby-Boomer music
3. "Bill & Hillary" vs. the traditional Mr. & Mrs. President
4. Didn't I see Mr. Clinton play the saxaphone on the David Letterman Show?

I recall the term "the popular candidate" from my youth, but I never remember the term as a negative one!

How does one earn votes without becoming a celebrity?

Wait a minute! What is the definition of celbrity? Has it changed recently? Let me check. . . .

My Fourth Edition Webster's New World College Dictionary, Copyright 2005 defines celebrity as follows:

1 wide recognition; fame; renown

2 a famous or well publicized person

The next time someone gets angry at me for something, I know they COULD call me a lot of things, but I hope they call me a "celebrity"! Who-o-oa!!!!!!!!

Am I missing something?

STUDENT FORENSICS TOURNAMENT: NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION SPEECHES

When I was a kid, I use to LOVE dramatic reading. I did not have much interest in acting, but won 1st prize in almost every high school forensics tournament I entered. It all started in 4th grade with Paul Lawrence Dumbar's "In Da' Mornin" from Little Brown Baby. I even won college scholarships this way, performing "The Telephone Call", by Erma Bombeck and an original work of my own.

As I listened and watched Mr. & Mrs. Obama speak independently, my eyes flooded with tears of joy, pride & admiration. My heart actually felt heavy. Perhaps this is what it feels like to feel overwhelmed?

Immediately after Mr. Obama concluded, I was not really listening to the chatter of the commentators, but daydreaming that the crowds were cheering/roaring for their children who were performing in a local democratic forensics tournament! Goofy or what?

I really wish I had the resources to launch such a project.

Do you know of anyone or any organization who could?

The first day of school is right around the corner!

What are your thoughts on this?

Talk about continuing to raise awareness!

How about a school play/skit about a child accompanying his/her parents to the voting poll for the first time?

How about a drawing contest?

A school hallway mixed media exhibit about the 2008 Election with a theme that does not show preference to any particular party, just to continue emphasis on voter awareness & registration.

How about a mock YouTube debate: college students pretend to be Barack Obama & John McCane BEFORE the real debate(s).

As one of the warm-up speakers reminded us yesterday, four years ago Barack Obama made a speech at the Democratic National Convention "as an unknown senator with a name nobody could pronounce".

A shining appeal to national unity, it launched him on the national political stage. Yesterday he delivered another speech at the same event that in the immediate aftermath felt as if it would propel him all the way to the White House. . . .

Last night was his most momentous attempt to sway the nation, watching in their living rooms, that he rather than the Republican Senator John McCain, like Hillary Clinton another establishment figure, is the best man to lead the United States.

We expected some ethereal rhetoric, and he didn't disappoint, appealing to Americans to renew the American dream. But where the senator from Illinois really delivered was in earthy aggression towards his opponent.

John McCain does care about the struggles of ordinary Americans, he said, he just doesn't get why they are struggling.

How dare Republicans question turn Obama's criticism of the Iraq war into doubts over his patriotism. "We are the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy…Don't tell me Democrats won't keep America safe," he declared, bringing nearly 80,000 people inside the steep-sided bowl of the Invesco Field stadium roaring and applauding to their feet.

Amid the tears and screams, the ovations and the flag-waving, the McCain camp's carping about Obama's popularity sounded shallow.

As fireworks exploding into a clear night sky brought the evening to a close, the man next to me, one of Obama's legion of young followers, said: "There's no way the Republicans can match this. He's got to win now.
