I haven't seen the polls broken down like this anywhere so I decided to do it myself. This is an analysis of the elector votes each candidate would recieve based on individual state polls. The good news, if today were November 3nd, and the poll numbers were accurate, Barack Obama would be our President.

I wrote in my "Why I support Barack Obama" box that I was intrigued by him the first time I heard him speak at the Democratic Convention in 2004. While that is a true statement, it was the transcript of another speech that inspired me to join this website and become a part of a political campaign for the first time in my life. It was a speech about the connection between religion and politics. After reading the transcript, I felt both a sense of relief - because somebody finally figured it out - and a sense of urgency to do my part in getting Barack Obama elected.
It's impossible to summarize the speech so I won't try. If you haven't read or heard it, here's the link... Call to Renewal Keynote Address
In the context of that particular speech, I find it ironic. The same man who stood in front of Evangelical Christians and said...
"Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason."
...is being characterized by the words of his former pastor. It's time for this country to move beyond stereotyping individuals whether it's based on their skin color, religion, ethnicity, etc. and it's time we reconcile the connection between religion and politics.
I posted this in a comment on one of Ben Vos's blogs - which are totally worth reading btw. I haven't posted a blog in a while so I am recycling - in honor of Earth Day (belated) of course. :)
I am looking for a president (or government really) that takes a Holistic approach to national security and immigration. Two things that in reality go hand in hand.
If we put a band-aid on a wound as deep as illegal immigration, the pus will ooze out in no time. The problem has to be addressed at its roots. The illegal immigration story is only half told. Mexicans are coming here for employment because people are employing them. Pressure needs to be applied in the right spot. Then the question becomes... why aren't the employers of illegal immigrants being pressured? There is an abiding belief that Americans won't work as cheaply as illegal immigrants. I'd say that is true in a lot of areas and a lot of circumstances, but as our economy gets weaker and weaker the tides are turning. Take my home state of West Virginia for example. Last year I read a report about the increase in illegal immigrant population on a state by state basis. I was not the least bit surprised to find out that WV was the only state to have NO increase. Why? Because the economy has been so bad for so long (forever really) that West Virginians don't expect high wages. In places where Americans are still demanding a decent wage, the government needs to crack down on employers. It will take a VERY brave and honest person to undercut those businesses though. I really hope Senator Obama is that type of person.
Foreign terrorism is another extremely deep wound. The things we are seeing happen now are rooted in hatred that goes back through years and years of discriminatory foreign policy. In my opinion, Senator Obama will be a fresh face on the foreign policy front, and might be able to at least turn the hatred into neutrality and open up a window of opportunity. However, I haven't heard him address the core issues on this so I can't say whether or not the final solution lies with him.
As I was coming into work this morning, the front desk receptionist was showing another co-worker an online video of Hillary Clinton. They were laughing and making fun of the fakeness of it all. They are McCain supporters. Oddly enough, I share much of the same sentiments. As a woman, I like the idea of a woman running for president, but I refuse to support a candidate based on their genetalia. Hillary Clinton doesn't even compare to the strength and character of Barack Obama.
Hello to anyone who reads this!
My name is Rebecca and this is the first time in my adult life that I have ever supported a mainstream politician. I usually lean towards the Green Party candidates because I have a theory that society can go to pots but everything will work out in the end if we can just keep the planet in tact. Strange, I know, but I don't have much faith in humankind.
So why now? Why am I here on Barack Obama's campaign website?
I vividly recall the Democratic Party's convention in 2004 when the freshman Senator Barack Obama gave a wonderfully moving speech. I said out loud, "Why doesn't someone like that run for President?" When I heard Senator Obama had announced his candidacy in 2007, I was excited but skeptical. I never imagined that this many people would share my point of view. The unity brought about by Barack Obama has surprised even me, and I am hard to surprise.
Until next time,
~Rebecca
