Obama Support in Oregon - where our primary is too late to count.

I'd like to ask anyone living within a 3 hour drive of Portland to consider driving up to Washington on February 9th to assist with the Washington caucus. My husband and I are driving up the night before to volunteer all day on Saturday. This thing will not be over on 2/5. Yes, there's a ton at stake that day, but it's not going to be decided - for anyone.

That doesn't mean Super Tuesday won't be super after all. Voters in more than 20 states will go to the polls on the biggest day of the primary campaign, and thousands of delegates will be at stake.

But it's possible Feb. 5 might not even produce clear front-runners.

Here's why:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton leads the race for delegates to the Democratic National Convention this summer. She has 236, including separately chosen party and elected officials known as superdelegates, giving her a 100-delegate lead over Sen. Barack Obama.

There will be nearly 1,700 Democratic delegates at stake on Feb. 5, enough to put a candidate well on his or her way to the 2,025 needed to secure the nomination. But even if somehow either Clinton or Obama won every one of those delegates, it wouldn't be enough. And with two strong candidates, the delegates could be divided fairly evenly because the Democrats award their delegates proportionally — not winner-take- all.

The biggest prizes among the Democratic states are California (370 delegates), New York (232) and Illinois (153). All three states award Democratic delegates proportionally, with most delegates awarded according to the popular vote in individual congressional districts, and the rest based on the statewide vote.

The wild card for the Democrats involves the superdelegates, nearly 800 elected officials and members of the Democratic National Committee. They are free to support any candidate they choose at the national convention, regardless of the outcome of the primaries.

The AP has interviewed more than 90 percent of the superdelegates who have been identified by the party, and most have yet to endorse a candidate. Many say they will not make endorsements until after their states vote.

Staying Positive

It’s always interesting to me to “people watch”, be it at a sports event, the local mall, or most recently available, the Internet blogs. As a human race, we are certainly peculiar in who we are, what we believe, and what we’ll do for what we believe. This has never seemed more obvious to me than during the last few months of serious presidential campaigning in our country. For the first time in decades, we have a completely open race – anyone can run. The candidates are diverse in their thinking, in the same way the American people are diverse. They agree and disagree with each other, often. But even when they agree on a particular issue, they still often disagree on how to make it happen. Accordingly, their discussions and debates have proven to be quite interesting at times.Their supporters are really no different, and are, by their own right, a very unique lot. Many are honest, decent, hardworking people that just want a better world for their children and grandchildren. Many simply want better lives for themselves, tired of not being able to see a doctor due to lack of health insurance or a depleted budget unable to cover the co-pay. Others believe their candidate is “the one” and share those feelings with friends, families, and neighbors. And there are still others, you know who they are, who shout their political feelings at the top of their lungs (figuratively and literally) to make their voices be heard, often without seeing whom they’re stepping on in the process.This is the first time in eighteen years of voting where I’ve genuinely cared about the presidential election. I’ve always voted – I felt it was my duty as an American to do so. But each year, after all was said and done, I found myself choosing the candidate with whom I disagreed the least, and never one that I believed could make a real difference to our future.Why is this year different? For starters, I’m a Mom now. My daughter just turned two years old, and she’s a bundle of energy. In believing this country has the opportunity to create a better future for her, and for all of us, my husband and I are strong supporters of Senator Barrack Obama. Listening to one speech from this man, reading one of his books, or simply watching him talk with (not to) every day average people and actually listen to them, not with the idea of using their stories to boost his campaign, but with the goal of making their lives a little easier – it’s impossible for us to see anyone else in this race being a better President of the United States.This is why we back him financially when our budget allows. This is why I risked angering family and friends by sending them a video of one of his speeches via e-mail. This is why both my husband and I are on his website several times a day, seeing what else we can do to support this man in his quest to lead a different, positive, and hopeful government – a government with leaders we can be proud to call our own.Yet, in reading some of the blogs on Senator Obama’s website, let alone the comments posted on other sites, I see so much anger, so much negativity, and so much out and out rudeness to others. And no, this is not just coming from supporters of Senator Clinton or Senator Edwards. This is often coming from people saying they too support Senator Obama for President. I have to wonder though if those people, the Obama supporters, are really hearing his message. Accordingly, as you go forth, supporting the person you feel would make the best president for the next four years, I ask that you do so in a positive manner because our country has seen enough negativity, enough heartache, and enough fear – it’s time for (here’s the buzzword of the year) change.Change for a better future; change we can believe in, today and always.Julia Ozab
