I'm torn. The message Barack Obama had provided brought renewed hope that politics could be force for good in this country. Even if just a slogan, if you believe, hope is a powerful force. Hope that perhaps we could move past the current administration. Hope that we could once again advance a progressive agenda. Hope that we could create a better world together. I donated money and effort, and felt convinced that Senator Obama truly meant what he said when he asked us to believe. To believe that he was different, that he truly believed in the same issues. And he vocalized these issues. He felt like a national outlet for all my concerns, and a solution as well. Now, I don't know what to believe. The trouble with having faith in people? They seem to let you down. My hope is fading and I am worried it will disappear altogether. FISA, NAFTA, gun control, welfare reform, campaign finance: these are all issues that I care about. Until three weeks ago, I though I was on the same page as our nominee. Now? I'm desperately confused. What happened? Could winning the nomination change positions this drastically? Was I deceiving myself? He's got my vote, but he's also stolen my hope.
