For true reform, public plan needed

We need a public health insurance option to improve availability, increase choice, and control costs, which are an unbearable burden on our businesses, families, and economy. Opponents claiming that a public option is "socialized medicine" or "puts the government between you and your doctor" are ignoring two facts. A public option (1) is being proposed in addition to existing insurance options and (2) is no different than private insurance companies that have been getting between you and your doctor for decades. For true reform, we need a public plan that rewards disease prevention rather than revenue generation from disease treatment.

Letter to Cincinnati Enquirer, USA Today, Washington Post, New York Times

As a chemical engineer and 32 year manager of R&D for a Fortune 50 multinational corporation, I agree with Tomas Friedman’s April 11 column in the New York Times, as well as his book “Hot, Flat, and Crowded”. There is only one way we can protect the environment, achieve energy independence, and capitalize on America’s innovation skills in a sustainable, 21st century global economy. That is with pricing and regulatory structures that reflect the true costs of carbon pollution, and provide incentives that reflect the massive, immediate benefits of making more efficient use of energy. That’s not “socialism”, that’s good business.

Letter to Gov. Dean

Dear Gov. Dean
I have been an Obama supporter for several months and have contributed several hundred dollars to his campaign, as well as several days of volunteer time - the first time I have volunteered in my 35 years as a voter. I have also contributed several hundred dollars to moveon.org, and Kerry in 2004. Until recently I have always considered Hillary Clinton as deserving of my support should Obama not win the nomination (just as I voted for Bill Clinton both times he ran for the Presidency). However, in the last couple of weeks, her negative campaigning, fear mongering, arrogance, and divisiveness are becoming too much to bear. I am not expecting you to control the Clintons, but I have to register my disgust at their tactics and deplore you and other Democratic party leaders to exert whatever influence you can to keep them from destroying the best chance we have had in a decade to win the Presidency and Congress. If she keeps this up, I will find it very difficult if not impossible to vote for her this fall.

Wonderful Get Out The Vote Experience

I just helped a mother in her 40s with MS get to her polling place and cast her vote for Obama. It was pouring rain and I had to lift her up when she fell in her yard after her crutch slipped in the mud. (She had asked me to pull my car around to her back door while she went outside on her own.) Despite being wet and muddy, she refused my offer to wait while she changed and we got to the polling place and she cast her vote. On the way back to her house, she talked about the importance of her vote for encourging stem cell research, especially given her disease. I feel really fortunate having had the opportunity to help this courageous woman cast her vote for Obama.

Those of you who attended the Feb 13 Obama Cincinnati organizing meeting heard a suggestion to support Obama via letters to your newspapers. I know this can work because I wrote a letter to the Cincinnati Enquirer last month in response to an anti-Obama guest column and it was published.

Here's another letter I just submitted this morning - we'll see what happens!

(Letter limited to ~100 words to comply with Enquirer guidelines)

"Today's Enquirer reports 150 people joining Chelsea Clinton last night downtown, and that Ohio Republicans want a Hillary Clinton nomination due to her perceived negatives. Last night, I attended a meeting for Obama, delayed because of a traffic jam of arrivals to the New Friendship Baptist Church on Reading road. We started when the church was packed from the choir loft to the balcony with over 600 wildly enthusiastic campaign workers. It was an exhilarating mix of ages, genders, colors, and walks of life. This growing army of grassroots Obama campaigners is another reason why Republicans would rather run against Clinton!"
