I have been through 10 presidential elections and this year's campaign is the first time that has resulted in any of my friends breaking off relationships for voting for Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. These people still believe the libelous smear campaign accusations that first surfaced when the campaign first started.
They would send me every vicious pack of lies they received in the e-mail campaign and I would search out the truth and provide links to back up my research ,all to no avail.I can't help but believe that racial fears are at the bottom of the thought patterns.I was under the impression that racial hatred had been subdued;however,I firmly believe that racism is alive and well,it's just that people have nbot had to face it before.I still think that the denial is so deeply ingrained that other excuses for their beliefs take center stage.
We still have a long way to go in the USA and I hopoe that we are not sliding backwards undera pretense of going forward.I chose my support for Senator Obama based on research leading to my belief that he is the man who can lead us to be a better country.
"Well the ministers around here are not either. Not everyone is bad......just wait until your precious Obama, the baby killer, gets into office. Nothing will ever be the same again. Obama hasn't a heart...and he is a muslim, you are who you associate with! I don't see him associating with anyone with any class.
Thanks,"
This is a shoirt thread to show some of the McCain suporter's irrational comments and notice the inferrence that atheists defend the Obama platform.
"It took a Democratic President to clean up after the last Republican President and it is going to take a Democratic President to clean up after this one".Senator Hillary Clinton who says that this country will once again rise up once again from the ashes of the Bushes!!!!
Can you imagine what would have happened to all of your retirement accounts if the Republican plan to privatized Social Security was implemented?McCain still favors that plan.Whoa Baby!!!!!
Of the last 10 presidentail elections the Democrats won only 3 and two of them were by President Bill Clinton. We need another balanced budget,we need to be seen once again as a major world financial leader rather than a greedy gropu of capitalist whose agenda of becoming richer far outweighs the needs of the people.
I realize that many well intentioned Americans are exercising their wishful thinking that the elections would finish up quickly but what if the constitutional right to vote was suspended or removed?Stop for a minute and reflect on how many men, women and children lost their lives for the very freedoms that many of us take for granted and complain loudly that they infringe on our rights to be involved in other matters rather than politics.
It wasn't all that many years ago that certain groups of Americans won the right to vote.During the time of the ratification of the Constitution only the landed gentry had the rights of voting which was approximately only half of the men folk.Other groups didn't get the right until much later.
Women's right to vote:1920
Native American right to vote:1924
African American right to vote:1965
The citizens of Washington D.C. wern't able to vote until 1961.So although you may get tired of the voting process,it is the biggest responsibility of citizenship. So get involved and rally the vote. The future of our country depends upon it more so now than ever.
In the mid seventies, while stationed for two years in Italy,I lived in the Italian Riviera town of Terrania in a lovely small villa overlooking the beautiful Piazza della Fiore.
One of my neighbors was a member of the Brigate Rosse or better known as the Red Brigade or the well known Italian Communist Party that was extremely violent with bombings, killings and kidnappings in the early 80s.I made it known that I had to associate briefly with this man just because of our living situation and an occassional encounter socially.
This is much like what Senator Obama is being raked through the coals over.Any slight innocent chance occurrance taken in an out of context way can be made to sound so unpatriotic and almost bordering on the criminal side.
I have to say then that I associated with an axe murderer because of a past acquaintence who did his wife in one night with his wood chopper in a drunken fit of rage.Just because a past brush with different individuals seems out of line,it in no way reflects on the morals, ethics and values of anyone.it's something to think about.
I firmly believe that the WASP members of the Silent Generation and older Baby Boomers are afraid that an African American will be elected to the high office of President of The United States of America.I believe that their fears lie in the thought that they may be punished for their thoughts, words and actions in the past, present and future.
For too many years the media and general population have preached political correctness and acceptence of all races as being one blood.I see the anger building in the Mid West and parts of the Good Old Boy Democratic South, particularly Florida.Fear is rising huge that a black man,not an American, but an African American will probably be the next president and with a landslide of 10% plus of the vote.
That day is almost here and then, and only then, can the healing of centuries old wounds on all sides begin to heal.I am so grateful that I was alive for such a momentus turning of the tide. How we as individuals handle this will determine the future of America. Are we the strong backbone of the world or are we just a bully that runs around the world preaching one thing and living another?
Most of you are too young to have lived through our own apartheid and I am here to tell you that it was a shameful time in our lives.Racism is alive and well today,it has just been relagated for the most part to the back of the closet.
Now is the time to fully examine our own motives, fears and goals for our children and to put aside any thoughts that someone who is different in color only ,is not capable of being a true American and capable of leading this country through these extrememly difficult times ahead.
