I read an article (commentary) by Glen Beck espousing his conservative views.
I agree with some of his comments to a degree, however, he has denigrated liberals and moderates with many of these comments.
Financial responsibility: The conservative arm of our country has not shown fiscal responsibility since Dwight Eisenhower was President. Their idea of fiscal responsibility has led to the current economic problems faced by this country. Deregulation of lending institutions and wall street have caused the financial crisis pervading this country. Conservatives own these institutions. Beck states we should be fiscally responsible, however, these same banks, go to colleges and universities and give credit cards to students to suck them in to a never ending spiral of debt. Most of these students have no jobs except work study programs and they give them credit. This is unsound lending practices. The credit card companies make donations to our public universities so they can promote their credit cards to the young and fiscally uneducated. This is criminal in my book. These lending institutions market debt like it is a wonderful thing...they market to a society of have-nots and suck them into debt.
Freedom of Religion: Mr. Beck, our constitution is for all Americans. Conservatives have denigrated that constitution by striping away our first amendment rights. You expect all Americans to walk in lockstep with your religious beliefs. Liberals are not immoral, that is only in your mind. Liberals and moderates do more for their fellow man than most conservatives I know. Liberals and moderates not only BELIEVE in helping their neighbors, they actually do it. Can you honestly say the same? You may believe that life begins at inception, as do I, but not everyone shares that same religious belief. You may believe that the religious rite of marriage is sanctified by your religious belief, however not all people share your religious beliefs. Marriage is not ordained by our constitution, however, the freedom of religion is.
I think if you study history, it was liberals, some of whom died, who organized to provide better working conditions, safer environmental standards, and better wages for the blue collar workers.Yep, the hated unions. Without them these same people would have been living hand to mouth. The goal of conservatives, in my humble opinion is to have a society of classes, which our founding fathers fought against. In American today, we have the rich and powerful, a small middle class that is getting smaller by the day, and the poor. Eventually we will become a country led by a dictator because if you keep the masses downtrodden, uneducated and poor, they become apathetic and easy to lead. The power and greed of those same conservatives you hold so dear, are the same ones who would lead us there.
I'm surprised you don't mention the real issues at stake in this country. The denigration of our Consitutional rights.
Education: We have had a public education for a very long time. I agree it is the responsibility of parents to see that their children are in school and are educated. The majority of American children attend public schools. They are underfunded, most supported by state tax revenues, but required to teach under a federal mandate of "no child left behind." How do you propose to fund these schools when states no longer have a working middle class to support them? In Michigan, the unemployment rate is at 8.5 percent, due in large degree to the passing of NAFTA. We have a trade agreement that saw our jobs sent overseas, yet these huge, profitable companies are given huge tax incentives with no protection for the American worker. Companies will not even consider building in states or communities without huge tax incentives. Where do we get the funds to educate our children?
Conservative.......give me a break!
