The following letter was sent this evening to The Post and Courier and The Moultrie News....
When talking with voters supporting or leaning towards supporting McCain, their primary concern with Barack Obama is the Tax Issue. They believe that Barack Obama will significantly raise their taxes Well actually, this is not at all true. Here's a few highlights from Obama's Tax Plan to shed some light on this subject: Obama will provide immediate tax cuts for 95% of working Americans and their families, and no families making less than $250,000/year (or individuals making less than $200,000/year) will see their taxes increased. Middle class families will pay tax rates that are 20% lower than they faced under President Reagan. According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan. Under Obama's plan, families making more than $250,000/year will pay either the same or lower tax rates than they paid in the 1990's. As stated on the website "In fact, dividend rates would be 39% lower than what President Bush proposed in his 2001 tax cut". Obama will ask the wealthiest 2% of families to give back a portion of the taxes they have received over the past 8 years "to ensure we are restoring fairness and returning to fiscal responsibility". But no family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990's. Obama's plan will cut taxes overall, reducing revenues to less than 18.2% of GDP which are below the levels that prevailed under Reagan. The Obama tax plan is a net tax cut - his tax relief for middle class families is larger than the revenue raised by his tax changes for families over $250K/year.Families with incomes below $250,000 will continue to pay the capital gains rates they are paying today. For those in the top two income tax brackets (families with incomes over $250,000) Obama will create a new top capital gains rate of 20%. Obama's 20% rate is equal to the lowest rate that existed in the 1990's and the rate that President Bush proposed in 2001. It is almost 1/3 lower than the rate that President Reagan signed into law in 1986.Obama will provide Tax Relief for Small Businesses and Start up Companies. by eliminating all capital gains taxes on these entities will which encourage innovation and job creation. Also Obama will provide "Making Work Pay" tax credit which will reduce small business owners of their current double taxation burden (paying both the employee and the employer side of payroll tax). Barack Obama will eliminate all income taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year. This proposal will eliminate income taxes for 7 million seniors and provide these seniors with an average savings of $1,400 each year. Under the Obama-Biden plan, 27 million American seniors will also not need to file an income tax return.Obama's plan will also give our economy a much needed boost by enacting a Windfall Profits Tax to provide $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American families. And guess who is going to be paying for this Emergency Rebate? The Oil Companies! This windfall profits tax will be enacted on excessive oil company profits. Now that's change! When's the last time we heard this from the White House? To compare.the Bush tax cuts give those who earn over $1,000,000 a tax cut nearly 160 times greater than that received by middle-income Americans. Today our economy is negatively impacting everyone. To those in the top 5%, how are your businesses doing? What about your investment portfolios? Is your real estate increasing in value? Net worth on the rise? Loyalty to the GOP certainly isn't benefiting you now, nor will it benefit you if McCain is elected. How can you expect McCain, who has voted with President Bush 95% of the time in 2007, to fix Bush's mistakes?? What you can expect is a third term of Bush.If you fall in the top 5% and you're worried about losing some of your tax cuts, have you considered increasing your charitable donations to help offset this loss? There are hundreds of local charities and non profit organizations that desperately need help. Your donation will help strengthen our community, give our local economy and your business a little boost, and you get the tax deduction. Invest in your community and it's a win-win situation all the way around.This isn't a blue issue or a red issue. (And for the record, I've voted red, blue and independent.) This is an issue that affects all of us, and we owe it to ourselves and to the next generation to be well informed voters at the polls this November. America today is far too fragile for us to keep making the same mistake over and over. We literally cannot afford a third round of Bush. Thank you Paul Currier for coining this phrase "Obamerican"!! This is the word I've been looking for to describe me and other Obama supporters who want real, true, sweeping change to restore UNITY to our country. Forget the "red" and the "blue".....let's get the Politics of the Past OUT of our government! Barack Obama is our ONLY hope, a once in a lifetime opportunity to unite our country, and our world.
