The following is a letter I sent to both my Republican Senators in Texas. I would have sent it to my representative in the House, but his contact me page has been down for 3 weeks. Part of me hopes that the independent souls of Texas will rise up and shock the world by voting for Obama--but then again, I live in Austin.
Senator,
I am writing to let you know my grave disgust with the Republican party and the current bailout of greedy bankers and financiers. The party has become the party of the ultra-rich. It sanctions bailouts for companies whose greed, incompetence and illegal activities (encouraged by deregulation) made their executives billions, while at the same time crying "laissez-faire!" to millions of Americans who lost their homes, their jobs, their livelihoods under this administration.
Bush came into the presidency with a surplus--we now run a deficit in the trillions, and the middle class shrinks while the rich grow richer due to favorable policies and obscene tax cuts.
How can anyone with half a brain cry "no new taxes!" in the light of this deficit, and this new bailout?--We must tax the rich their due or leave an even greater mess than we currently have for our children and their children, too.
I will be watching how you react to the banking crisis and the general financial malaise of this country--I will vote against you if you continue to legislate and vote in a way that supports ridiculous financial policies that make the rich richer and punish anyone below the top tax rates.
