On April 16, 2008 the Guam for Obama group joined supporters of former Gov. Carl Gutierrez in a Stand for Change Rally at the governor's residence in Agana Heights. The event drew Guamanians of all ages, from seasoned politicians to students who have never been involved in politics, for a 3-hour long get-together over traditional Chamorro food and homegrown music by a local band.
Guam Campaign Director Josh Tenorio introduced the nine delegates running for Obama, each of whom took the stage to explain the reasons behind their support. The delegates, which include former Senator Francis Santos and celebrated local attorney Mitch Thompson, mingled with and were received enthusiastically by the crowd. Gov. Gutierrez formally endorsed the campaign and explained why Sen. Obama is the best candidate for Guam.
Of note were several University of Guam students who volunteered their time to help organize the event. Charles Santos, a third-year nursing major at the UOG, claimed that this is his first time being involved with a political campaign on any level. Charles joins the growing number of young Guamanians signing on to help Sen. Obama's movement for change.
