I'm going to suggest something a bit on the radical side. A few friends have been talking up who Mr. Obama should consider for VP. There are the obvious choices and then there are some choices that make you cock your head and think. One of those choices was brought up this past weekend while we were kicking around people's names....
Sandra Day O'Connor
It’s an interesting combination. Being a Republican aside, what she brings to the table is. . .interesting to say the least. As a retired Supreme Court Justice she went through the hearings. She’s been scrutinized. She’s had her life picked over. She is also a moderate. Not just a moderate but a moderate who doesn’t base decisions purely on what her wranglers tell her to do. She has the ability to think about the “big picture” (Something that Supreme Court Justices are required to do.) and not simply within the US but internationally as well. I quote:
The impressions we create in this world are important and can leave their mark... There is talk today about the "internationalization of legal relations." We are already seeing this in American courts, and should see it increasingly in the future. This does not mean, of course, that our courts can or should abandon their character as domestic institutions. But conclusions reached by other countries and by the international community, although not formally binding upon our decisions, should at times constitute persuasive authority in American courts—what is sometimes called "transjudicialism"
IMHO I think it’s important that whoever Obama teams up with needs a solid world view. Over the last 8 years we’ve seen some of the most petty, self centered behavior coming out of this Whitehouse. This needs to end in a big way. It’s more important then ever that our ties to the international community become solid again. I think Obama's credibility in the world would go a long way towards healing those wounds, but adding O'Connor to that mix would help even further.
I had another 4 paragraphs of reasons to post why she would be a solid VP; however like Obama I think if you use the net and discover more about her on your own you will be surprised at how well the two could possibly mesh as President and VP.
I haven't been nearly as active as I've wanted to be on this blog. Lets see if we change do something about that. Today kicks off my $100 a month donation. I'd donate more but new tires and an extended warranty on a car gets spendy and as much as I want Barack to win. . a blowout really isn't something I'd really want. :-P
Up til now though, in regards to donations, I've really been on the fence. As much as I've wanted to donate a metric ton of money to Barack. The funds donated to him, traditionally stay in the candidates coffers. I think while its insanely important to have Barack be our next President, until this past week I'd been thinking its even more important that a Dem win. So the plan was to drop $1000 towards whoever won the nomination. BUt frankly at this point I'm so displeased by Hillary that, and I can't beleive I'm saying this, I'd say there is a 40% chance that I would vote for McCain.
Why why WHY? Would I do such a thing? Because of the Fundi cancer that is infesting the Republican party. The concept of a moderate Repub is all but gone. They were put on the endangered species list sometime in the mid 80's and nothing has been done to repopulate their species. McCain is the closest thing to a moderate we’ve seen in probably a decade. Heck looking at his record he initially opposed Bush's tax cuts. He is soft on gays. He actually thinks the environment is something that can’t be swept under the carpet. (Not happy about his stance on Iraq though.) Cheney actively tried to railroad him during reelection time. The conservatives HATE him. If he wins I see a good possibility of a flare-up of Republican Moderates....the true Repubs who back the conservative nominees because of party loyalty. This could, God willing, cause the fundi’s have to break off into their own party (Think of them like a cancer being removed from a patient.) This could free up the Republican party to stop being a colossal. . .hmm PG blog. . . I need to remember that. ;-)
So yah I’m going to start putting more money into Barack’s coffers, because its all or nothing at this point.
