Every Sunday I eat dinner with my extended family. Every so often politics become the discussion at the dinner table. Of the 10 adult members of the family, all but three voted for George Bush in the last election. I am excited to announce that it was unanimous tonight. Everyone at the table feels Barack Obama is the best candidate to lead this nation. One of my uncles called Barack the Tiger Woods of Politics, an absolute phenom. Everyone agrees that Barack is reasonable on the issues of health care and taxes, and is just plain likeable. My step mother proclaimed that he makes you excited to be an American and inspires you to engage in the process.
When asked if anyone liked Clinton, everyone in the room reacted in utter contempt for the women. One staunch repulbican could not understand why Obama does not challenge the so called experience of Clinton stating "that is like claiming that a wife of a surgeon who has practiced for 20 years is ready to perform brain surgery". Others proclaimed that if Clinton got the nomination they would vote for whatever Republican or Indpendent was running against her.
While I realize this is a snapshot of an Arizona family dinner that may be irrelevent to the democratic primary (since most of the familiy members are registered republicans) it is important to see the overall support Obama receives from moderates and conservatives. I think the issue of electibility is key to Obama's future and he must stress the polarizing effect the Clintons have on the voting public.
I must tell you that the winds of change are blowing in Arizona.
