Arguing with friends

I have been arguing with two male friends (my best friends' husbands) ever since the Pennsylvania primary. I finally had to end the "discussion" with this e-mail. We had been discussing habeas corpus for detainees ad nauseum. I'm not sure if I'll get the last word or not ;)

Dear friends,I've been thinking about this for awhile and feel the need to lay the matter (politics) to rest. You and I have very different mindsets about discussing politics. Although I do enjoy a good debate, and I certainly have learned a thing or two, for me it is frustrating to have political discussions devolve into such minutia that, for me at least, all perspective is lost.Perhaps I have listened to Barack so often, and read so much (every single political article in the Inquirer for the past 4+ months, countless blogs albeit mostly Barack Obama's, Daily Kos, and TPM, and many articles on CNN or MSNBC) that I am beginning to lose perspective anyway. However, even when I take a break and try to get a little mental distance from the subject, I cannot shake the feeling that this coming November will be the most important election of my lifetime. I am so afraid that this country is going to let the leader of a century slip away due to factors such as ignorance and racism. Of course, I can support anyone who votes for John McCain from an unbiased and thoughtful mindset.The things I care about deeply are at stake in this election. Education. Environment. Foreign Policy. Ethical Government. Fair tax structure (and yes, I do consider it fair for those who can afford to pay more to do so). For all of these policy reasons I support Barack Obama.Also at stake is the quality of leader. In my personal opinion John McCain has made many personal relationship blunders that cause me to question his judgment and integrity. I am specifically referring to his marriages and the circumstances under which they came about, most particularly his marriage to Cindy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cindy_Hensley_McCain#cite_note-Kristof-14 (note section under marriage and family). I also question his intelligence/motivation in general as he graduated low in his class and did not try to improve this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCain (note section under formative years and education). I also worry about his temper and mental acuity due to his age, if not at this time possibly in the near future.On the other hand Barack Obama is an inspirational man who is a devoted husband and father. He graduated top of his Harvard class and was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. Both of his books, Dreams from my Father and Audacity of Hope, show him to be honest, expressive, and humble while at the same time highly intelligent and motivated.And that's all I have to say about that.Jessica
