The Soft Spot

Hope is fragile, and it's difficult to hold on to. The fact that Michelle and Barack can still be in this race is testament to their committment to make the world a better place. Pundits push numbers and calculated phrases around, telling us the reality as they create it. Pema Chodron often teaches of the "soft spot" in all our hearts that we move automatically to protect. This campaign is an exercise of the most difficult kind in keeping that soft spot open and exposed in the most difficult situations. I am thankful to Barack and Michelle for trying to bring an honesty and openness to the political process that may never have been seen in this country before.

Black Man by Stevie Wonder & G. Byrd

I listen to Stevie Wonder's "Black Man" and cannot help but think what a great theme song it would make for the campaign. It's probably not catchy enough, and we'd have a lot of history to learn (all good, right?) Why can't the message of love and acceptance for all break through in this country? We stubbornly hold to ideas that have never served us, have only worked to divide us: men from women, black from white, yellow, red, brown, and rich from poor. That's the hope in this campaign, that we could finally rise above these petty squabbles and reach out to one another as brothers and sisters. These are just some of the thoughts that come listening to "Songs in the Key of Life."
