I wanted to post some of the words of the memorial Rev. Mike Young gave for the Obamas in honor of Grandma Toot. He wrote:
"Madelyn Dunham chose this land of gentle and violent beauty for her final resting place. Westand now in the leeward shadow of the majestic Ko'olaus, in the distance the rich and fecundPacific. Along this coast, Punchbowl, Diamond Head, Koko, Hanauma, craters of the ancient-birthing of this land in fire. Wrapped in moist trade winds scented and spiced with pikaki andginger. Mauka, the verdant mist washed valleys watering a fertile garden of the human spirit. From the most ancient Kanaka Maoli to today's rich diversity of peoples whose spirits are rootedin this land, here have you come. Here will her ashes and the good wishes of those who loved herbe joined with the elements of this place. We come here today to seek the blessings of this landupon her repose. Once, she admired this beauty as she moved through its spaces. Now she willbe a part of it, greeting the dawn and the sunset, storm and calm, from within the very heartof that beauty."
Last night I fell asleep as I was watching C-Span. This morning very early, about 4 a.m., Obama's voice entered my hearing. It was very pleasant listening to his plans for a new economy. I appreciate it that he's about solutions and not about blaming others for their mistakes.
Today I was in Trader Joes', buying almonds and wearing one of my Obama hats. The man behind me in line struck up a conversation about Barack that was very empowering to us both. It's best to wear some kind of indication of our preference for Obama so that people can communicate with us one way or another. If they are for Barack, it's easy. If they are not, it's an opportunity to be like Barack. He respects everyone.
Tomorrow I'm phonebanking to Nevada with CD30, my caucus group.
Have a productive Sunday!
Being the 'detective' that I am, I got the message below from the McCain camp today. I can understand why he wants people to vote for him now, by absentee ballot. He doesn't want people to be able to change their minds as they hear the upcoming debates.
" Friends,The polls are tightening across the nation, and one thing is clear: this year's presidential election will be one of the closest in history. We know that John McCain and Sarah Palin will change Washington, but before they reform our nation's capital, you have to send them there first. Now more than ever, your vote is critical. And there's no better way to vote than by voting early, or with an absentee ballot. Voting early, or with an absentee ballot, is the best way to avoid the long line on Election Day and get your vote counted. Many states allow you to vote early by requesting an absentee ballot through the mail. Please visit www.JohnMcCain.com/AB for more details on early voting and absentee ballot requests in your state.Your support is extremely important to electing John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin in November, and your vote will matter. I'm encouraging you to visit our website and either register to vote or sign up for early voting or an absentee ballot. Your vote will make all the difference in November. Thanks for your support and for your vote!Rick DavisCampaign ManagerP.S. Please forward this email to your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues and encourage them to either register to vote or sign up for early voting or absentee voting. Remember, this will be a close election and the work we do now will make all the difference in electing John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin. Thank you!"
"You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." Digusting saying, isn't it? Who wants to catch flies?! But I have a point I want to make.
As I have lived an active and honest life, speaking my mind, I have enjoyed the good feeling that came when I expressed my views, but I have come to believe I wasoften indulging a selfish freedom. Being right can be lonely, and alienating others never helps a cause. Finding a common ground and allowing another to fully express him or herself is empowering to all concerned. That is what it will take under the next administration if anything is to be accomplished in congress. We can practice this way of communicating as we continue to support our choice for president and vice president.
I have plelnty of chances to practice. My sister loves Sarah Palin. Fortunately, I have time to think of friendly ways to communicate about Sarah before I talk to my sister. Time is on my side.
