The Reagan/Clinton Comparison
By

As in many cases, Barack's original observation comparing Reagan and Bill Clinton was thoughtful and nuanced, while the Clinton response was a dishonest, but simple, attack designed to make the most of the sound bite mentality of many voters. However, it seems to me that Barack can bring home his point in an equally simple manner.
Of the original field of candidates in both parties, every single Republican attempts to characterize himself as a Reagan Republican, while ONLY ONE Democrat chooses to characterize herself as a Clinton Democrat. Case closed.
My guess is that 20 years from now, the Democratic field will be trying to characterize itself as Obama Democrats in much the same way Republicans seek the Reagan mantle today. That's what happens when you bring about transformational change. Of course none of this has anything to do with what one thinks of Ronald Reagan's political views.
My father was a Republican, and he and I never once voted for the same presidential candidate. However, I remember vividly how excited he was over Reagan's candidacy. Having read Barack's books and heard him speak many times, I can now far better appreciate my father's excitement at finding a truly inspirational leader with a shared vision for this country.
