I went to the JJ diner last night and like all 9000 attendees, was looking for an opportunity to see and hear all of the candidates. Edwards started the night off well. He made a strong speech and a good pitch for support despite seemingly going on too long. Richards was next up and I must say he did not inspire great enthusiasm. Joe Biden was professional and frank ... I thought he would be a good Sec of State, but not sure he can attract the crowds. Dodd was my favorite surprise of the evening. He made sense and appeared very likable but I think he is an acquired taste. Clinton was surprisingly flat. While her speech was comprehensive, I didn't find it all that compelling. I didn't like the canned "Turn up the Heat" refrain. Seemed to be more of a rally than a serious attempt to appeal to undecideds. Also, "turn the country around" implies going backward. Not sure who thought of that one, but won't something like 'charting a new course be better?' Overall, I was at a loss to understand the apparent enthusiasm of her supporters ... I guess I don't get it. My worry is that a majority of Americans won't either.
And then there was Barack. I have seen him on many occasions including in person. In a small environment comes across as serious, engaging and spontaneous. Here in a large auditorium, he was spectacular. A rock star, as my undecided wife noted. I think he demonstrated the ability to reach out to people and inspire. When was the last time that was the case? I am more certain than ever ... he can win and should be the nominee. What a night!
I saw an interesting article and discussion at Slate.com about a new plan being brought by Senator Wyden. Included are links to the SLATE article, Senator Wyden”s Senate speech and his web site, which contains information on the plan.
My review to follow.
