The GOP is up to the Old Tricks

The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) has sunk to a new low. The RJC is using negative message polling and spreading outright lies to deceive the American Jewish community.

Debbie Levy of Montclair, NJ, contacted NJDC after receiving one of these deceptive poll calls. She was asked:

"What if you were told that the president of Iran endorsed Obama?"

"What if you were to find out that Obama supported a united Jerusalem and then switched his opinion and believed in a divided Jerusalem?"

According to ABC News, Ben Cohen, a lawyer in Ohio who also received a call, was asked:

"Would you still vote for Barack Obama if you knew he had given money to the PLO?"

These polling questions were clearly designed to deceive Jewish voters and are pure lies. The only reason to test such lies is to see if they work with Jewish voters.

This is just the beginning. We expect the RJC to use these deceptive messages in upcoming ads, and we must fight back to get expose the truth.

NJDC must meet the challenge and not allow a fear and smear campaign of disinformation to prevail. We must launch an aggressive ad and direct mail campaign to counteract the RJC’s lies.

With less than 50 days until Election Day, we must urgently raise $100,000 in the next 5 days to expand our outreach to Jewish voters to get the true facts out.

I'm Having Sarah Palin Nightmares

DRILL BABY DRILL

Eve Ensler, the American playwright, performer, feminist and activist best
known for "The Vagina Monologues", wrote the following about Sarah Palin.

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a
member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned
and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a particular thing for
Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or their bigness or the fact
that they live in the arctic or that I have never seen one in person or
touched one. Maybe it is the fact that they live so comfortably on ice.
Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.

I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying
to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is
hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all
the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the
goodness and solidarity of Feminists.

But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical to
Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving the earth,
ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our
minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.

I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous choices
of my lifetime, and should this country choose those candidates the fall-out
may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas that America may
never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the impact that duo would
have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is not a joke. In my
lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept, the bizarre be elected to the
presidency with regularity.

Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor. In her
world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or
evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the arctic,
the storms that are destroying our cities, the pollution and rise of
cancers, are all part of God's plan. She is fighting to take the polar
bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is here
to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and
plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be
taken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi war, "It was a task
from God."

Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. She does not believe women who are
raped and incested and ripped open against their will should have a right to
determine whether they have their rapist's baby or not.

She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I imagine
her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many babies that
makes.

Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she has
tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense with people
who think independently. She cannot tolerate an environment of ambiguity and
difference. This is a woman who could and might very well be the next
president of the United States. She would govern one of the most diverse
populations on the earth.

Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom Austrian hunting rifle. She
has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has shot hundreds of wolves
from the air.

Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private right. But
when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when war is declared
in God's name, when the rights of women are denied in his name, that is the
end of separation of church and state and the undoing of everything America
has ever tried to be.

I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this election in
our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not just of
the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether we create policies to
save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for humans. It will
determine whether we move towards dialogue and diplomacy in the world or
whether we escalate violence through invasion, undermining and attack. It
will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest
our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction.
It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or whether
we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine whether America
is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism
and aggression.

If the Polar Bears don't move you to go and do everything in your power to
get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled the hall after Palin
spoke at the RNC, "Drill Drill Drill." I think of teeth when I think of
drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction. I think of domination. I
think of military exercises that force mindless repetition, emptying the
brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity or dissent. I think of pain.

Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the floor of
the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between nations and
peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call life?

Outrageous: Bushed Again --Undermining Womens' Rights

An Outrageous Attempt by the Bush Administration to Undermine Women's RightsThe Bush administration is up to its old tricks again, quietly putting ideology before science and women's health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is poised to put in place new barriers to accessing common forms of contraception like birth control pills, emergency contraception and IUDs by labeling them "abortion." These proposed regulations set to be released next week will allow healthcare providers to refuse to provide contraception to women who need it. We can't let them get away with this underhanded move to undermine women's health and that's why I am sounding the alarm.

These rules pose a serious threat to providers and uninsured and low-income Americans seeking care. They could prevent providers of federally-funded family planning services, like Medicaid and Title X, from guaranteeing their patients access to the full range of comprehensive family planning services. They'll also build significant barriers to counseling, education, contraception and preventive health services for those who need it most: low-income and uninsured women and men.

The regulations could even invalidate state laws that currently ensure access to contraception for many Americans. In fact, they describe New York and California's laws requiring prescription drug insurance plans to provide coverage for contraceptives as part of "the problem." These rules would even interfere with New York State law that ensures survivors of sexual assault and rape receive emergency contraception in hospital emergency rooms.

We've seen this kind of ideologically driven move from the Bush administration before. Senator Patty Murray and I went toe to toe with the Bush administration to demand a decision on Plan B by the FDA. We won that fight and we need to win this one too.

When I learned about these proposed rules, I immediately joined with Senator Murray to call on the Bush administration to stop these dangerous plans. I am joining with New York family planning and healthcare advocates to spread the word. Now is the time to raise our voices. I will continue to press HHS and I hope you will join me. SHOULD JEWISH VOTERS FEAR OBAMA?

Should Jewish Voters Fear Obama? Fear Not, Obama is a good friend of Israel.

In May, Barack Obama spent three days traveling throughout Florida, and we saw firsthand why this transformational leader and presumptive Democratic nominee will be the next president of the United States.

Sen. Obama will end the divisive politics of the past and reconnect Americans to the political process, while working tirelessly to forge common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our nation. He is committed to working with Democrats and Republicans to reinvigorate the American economy and make certain that all Americans have access to quality health care. He has a sound plan to end the calamitous Iraq war.

Sen. Obama also is a champion of the issues Floridians care deeply about. He wants to ensure that restoration of the Everglades is funded, and he strongly supports a national catastrophe insurance fund.

Another issue of importance to Floridians is America's unbreakable bond with Israel. During a June 4 speech that drew several standing ovations, Sen. Obama firmly stated his unwavering support for U.S.-Israel relations before 7,000 Jewish-Americans at the annual meeting of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Sen. Obama said that as president he will 'make known to allies and adversaries alike that America maintains an unwavering friendship with Israel, and an unshakable commitment to its security.'

Despite his historic speech before AIPAC and his unwavering support for Israel and issues of concern to the American Jewish community, Sen. Obama continues to be the target of smears and innuendo, often cirulated anonymously in e-mails or in newspaper ads. Sadly, these atttacks have been transformed into official talking points by Republicans and their operatives - in effect abandoning a long tradition of bipartisan support for Israel.

Rather than deal in facts, including Sen. Obama's strong record on Israel, these e-mails and ads focus on guilt by association and are characterized by double standards. For example, does anyone believe that Sen. John McCain is anti-Israel because of former Secretary of State James Baker's role in his campign? As secretary of state under President George H.W. Bush, Mr. Baker conditioned billions in loan guarantees to Israel on its cessation of new settlement activities in the West Bank and chastised Israelis about their commitment to the Middle East peace process. In 2006, Mr. Baker reportedly proposed a controversial regional peace conference that excluded Israel.

Since taking office in 2005, Sen. Obama has an A-plus record on issues important to the American Jewish community. He has been a staunch supporter of the U.S.-Israel relationship, and fought to ensure Israel's security in the face of Palestinian terrorism, Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad rocket attacks, threats from Syria and a growing Iranian nuclear threat.

But like the vast majority of the American Jewish community, Sen. Obama believes that a comprehensive settlement - Israel and a peaceful Palestinian state living side-by-side - is the best way to ensure Israel's security and guarantee that Israel will remain a Jewish state.

In Florida, Sen. Obama laid out the case why, under his presidency, the United States and our ally Israel would be more secure. He also described in stark terms the differences between the direction of America's foreign policy under his leadership and that of John McCain, who has stridently declared that he will continue to carry out the same failed foreign policies - in Iraq, throughout the Middle East and elsewhere - of President Bush. Under Sen. McCain's perverse logic, if the policy is broken, don't fix it.

No one has been more resolute than Barack Obama in addressing the most serious security threat facing the U.S. and Israel - a nuclear Iran. He has stated emphatically that the world must work to stop Iran's uranium enrichment program and prevent Iran, which he describes as a 'radical theocracy,' from acquiring weapons. To that end, Sen. Obama introduced the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act, which would deny Tehran billions of dollars in energy revenues that are used to fuel its nuclear program and finance its terrorist network.

While not rejecting the use of force, Sen. Obama has taken a page from past presidents in calling for 'strong diplomacy' with Iran.

During his AIPAC speech he said: 'We will pursue this diplomacy with no illusions about the Iranian regime. Instead, we will present a clear choice. If you abandon your dangerous nuclear program, support for terror, and threats to Israel, there will be meaningful incentives - including the lifting of sanctions, and political and economic integration with the international community. If you refuse, we will ratchet up the pressure.'

It is clear that Sen. Obama's message of optimism and vision for change, in contrast to the 'stay the course' policies of President Bush and Sen. McCain, represent an unprecedented opportunity to unify our nation. Sen. Obama's candidacy is the best opportunity to 'restore American power and influence' and to address the 21st-century security challenges facing the United States and our ally Israel.

In a nutshell , McCain has consistently opposed the issues most important to Women. Voting against legislation or not present for the vote. Here's some of these issues:

Opposed Equal Pay Bill (4-08)
Opposed Title X legislation (extending family planning information to low income and uninsured women and families)
Voted to gut the Family and Medical Leave Act (1993 )
Opposed consistently women's health legislation
Opposes comprehensive sex and HIV education
Opposes Stem Cell Research

Oppsed repealing the "global gag rule"
Supports overturning ROE V WADE

With this information how could a woman stay home or vote for McCain. ????

South Florida Women For Obama is excitedto be hosting a UNITE FOR Change on Saturday June 28th in Pompano Beach. (details will be posted as an event in a couple of days)

This will be a multi-purpose gathering:

A meet & greet event. Finding people who are willing to take a leadership role. Information focusing on Rights and Issues important to Women Brain storming ways to make Hillary supporters welcome & additional outreach to less involved women Lot's of camaraderie, a Obama DVD message and perhaps a conference call with Obama

Some wonderful women in South Florida (both Hillary and Barack supporters) have come together with a fierce mission - to make sure a Democrat elected President in 2008. Our new group help educate women on all issues where Obama stands up for women and families, so they can spread the word. It has always been a women's instinct to do what's best for her children and family, even when it may have caused a personal hardship. This election will be no different for some who find it difficult to embrace Barack Obama. We hope we make the transition easier.
