As the election draws to a close, the mood is torn between anticipation and anxiety. On the one hand, supporters feel as though we are on the verge of a great historical moment. On the other, we resist the complacency that could deny it to us. For the last 20 months they have been told to believe. With 48 hours to go, we dare not believe too much.
For all the caveats, caution, denial and downplay, Obama's itinerary explains why he has every reason to be confident. With the exception of Pennsylvania, Obama has spent the last week traveling in states George Bush won in 2004. He needs 18 more Electoral College votes than Kerry to win.
He hasn't been behind in a poll in Iowa (seven votes) since he accepted the nomination, nor in New Mexico (five) in seven weeks. He has led in Virginia (13) and Colorado (nine) for the past month, and Florida (27), Ohio (20) and Nevada (five) for at least the last week. He is mounting challenges in North Carolina and Missouri.
Barack Obama's team demonstrated its confidence of victory Friday by announcing it is to extend its campaign deep into the Republican heartland, putting fresh resources into Georgia and North Dakota, and even into John McCain's home state Arizona.
He only needs one or two of these polls to be right to win. His team expects the race to tighten in these final days. But for him to lose, there would have to be a full-scale, last-minute reversal.

A Tale of Two Strategies
If you're trying to cover up the fact that you're a war-monger regarding Iran, accuse your opponent of being a war-monger regarding Pakistan. If you're trying to cover up the fact that you're an elitist in personal wealth, accuse your opponent of being an elitist intellectually. If you're trying to cover up the fact that you don't care much about a vast swath of America, accuse your opponent of being Anti-American.If you're trying to cover up the fact that your economic plans are the same old-same old discredited trickle-down economics, accuse your opponent of being the same old-same old liberal economics. And if you plan to steal an election (if you get it close enough), accuse your opponent of trying to steal the election.

The Second Presidential Debate
The big story of round two’s debate last night that's central to this contest: Americans are becoming increasingly comfortable with the idea of President Obama. He widened that comfort zone tonight. He was at ease as he responded to individual voters. He was powerful and emotional as he discussed and dominated the very human question of health care. The "other," as the Republicans labored to paint him, now comes across as reassuring, a strong and steady hand in a crisis, possessed of that grace under pressure that Americans prize in a president. Obama had it again tonight. McCain did marginally better than in the last debate, but far, far from good enough. He lost on the issues and Obama won on style. Why does McCain prefer the town hall format? McCain actually looked awkward wandering around a stage just as he looked uncomfortable at a podium in the first debate.
Now it's back to the campaign trail and the mudbath that after last night the Republicans will see more and more as their only chance. In my view it's not the path to victory but to dishonor. There is some evidence Republicans don't care about that, but some believe that McCain used to. So the next time someone in a crowd she gins up shouts "traitor" or “kill him” at the mention of Obama's name, Palin ought to reach into that studied vernacular vocabulary of hers and tell them to "shut up." She won't of course. She wants this reaction; I guess McCain does too. It's all they've got. Obama will go out and talk about the exact same things he talked about in this debate. That's the difference between a campaign that's shooting from the hip and one that's keeping to a game plan. It's no wonder that the gap is slowly widening.
And finally, the "that one" moment. It wasn't racial, to me. It was an old guy speaking slightly awkwardly. I'd bet, however, that the liberal media and black people will surely see it differently.

AFL-CIO's Richard Trumka on Racism and Obama
A pretty amazing speech by the AFL-CIO's Richard Trumka. To see a white union man take on racism this way is very moving. Something truly profound is happening in this election:
Original YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QIGJTHdH50
Richard Trumka serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, , he was elected in 1995. He previously was president of the United Mine Workers from 1982 to December 22, 1995.
Trumka was born in Nemacolin, PA, a third-generation coal miner who went to work in the mines at age 19. He attended Penn State U and his law degree from Villanova.
While president of the UMWA, Mr. Trumka led the successful nine-month strike against the Pittston Coal Company. It became a rallying symbol for the entire labor movement. A major issue in the dispute was Pittston's refusal to pay into the industry wide health and retirement fund created in 1950. Mr. Trumka encouraged non-violent civil disobedience to confront the company in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and relied on a sophisticated corporate campaign involving Wall Street investors.
Besides his fighting aggressively against employers on behalf of his members, then-President Trumka established an office that raised U.S. mine worker solidarity with the mineworkers of South Africa while they were fighting racial apartheid.] He further served as the U.S. Shell boycott chairman, which challenged the multinational Royal Dutch/Shell Group for its continued business dealings in South Africa.
Upon being elevated to the AFL-CIO, Secretary-Treasurer Trumka has focused on creating investment programs for the pension and benefits funds of the labor movement, fighting Wall Street greed, and challenging politicians to create an equitable economy for working people.
It doesn't surprise me at all that the AFL-CIO leadership is coming out strongly for Sen. Obama's candidacy, and urging the rank and file members to mobilize for Sen. Obama. The support of the labor movement is critical for success. As Secretary-Treas. Trumka points out, Sen. Obama is the only major party candidate for President this year who will keep the interests of workers and their families at heart.

Joe Biden spoke for the middle class while Sarah Palin spoke as being of the middle class. She looked like a contestant and he looked like a candidate. Ms. Palin may have stopped the bleeding but Republican scars cut deep then cicatrized. Her job maybe safe as Governor of Alaska and she will be good Republican running mate for the next 32 days. However, Gov. Palin is a long long way off convincing anybody that she could be Commander-In-Chief in a heartbeat. Joe Biden was a professional asset to Obama last tonight. He can say whatever he likes, I'm inclined to believe he knows what he's talking about. But my patience with Palin is waving the white flag of surrender. The Elisa Dolittling of Sarah Palin maybe good for ‘must see TV’ but she doesn’t deserve one vote for a John McCain Presidency. More powers to the Vice President the United States Palin said. After Dick Cheney No Way No How No Palin. In the end she did not distinguish or distance herself or John McCain from George Bush in the 90 minute format.

This is in response to ALL of the pundits on BOTH sides that have been saying, lately, "Just let Palin be Palin." They say that she has been too wound up and out of her "comfort zone".
Well, out of Wasilla seems to be out of her comfort zone, for starters...
Okay, so... we see her first in Ohio when she was tapped. She delivered prepared remarks via teleprompter. Okay, prepared speech... who is she?
Then... she delivers her speech at the RNC... a prepared speech that many have said was written for her before she was tapped and then added to on her behalf. Here we saw her as pithy, sarcastic and prepared. She apparently had one impromptu moment with that "lipstick" comment. Okay, so we're starting to get to know her. Still prepared... no substance, just sarcastic remarks about "community organizers" and snarls to the camera when she says things like "I'll be an advocate for you."
Then... Charlie Gibson. Now, Charlie did not give her any of the questions in advance... so, this was Palin "off the cuff" and she bombed it big time. Clearly she was over prepared, saturated with information she couldn't decipher. She started to show the classic signs of someone trying to impress with her breadth of knowledge, hence her ability to dig herself in to the deepest of holes... and continue to fall in them and bury herself in total nonsense. So, was that Palin? Wasn't that Palin???
Then there was Tina Fey #1 - Glory Day. Tina is doing for Sarah what Dana Carvey did for Ross Perot and George HW Bush and Darrol Hammond did for Al Gore. Killed them.
Then there was Hannity. Ugh! Not even worth mentioning... few did.
All the while she continues to stump with McCain... giving the same speech, her RNC speech, over and over and over and over and over and over. Bridge to Nowhere, Reform, Maverick.... bla bla bla bla bla.
Then there was, and is Couric. She OBVISOULY was not prepared in advance with the questions she would be asked... and her trail fell off of the cliff... all the while blabbing and bumbling until she hit the bottom.
Then there was Tina Fey #2 - HAPPY DAY! Thanks to Tina, the country now knows Sarah as a bumbling idiot who will try to cute her way out of any sticky spot. This works for traffic tickets, some of the time, but not for this job. Not when you have 150 Million people who are going to hire you.
Then there was Couric #2 and #3... each one worse than the next. She's now digging herself to China.
It also crossed my mind too, that Palin has not studied law. However, she is a politician and it is inexcusable for her not to be able to cite EXXON vs BAKER. As Governor of Alaska she should certainly have been able to comment on the Exxon oil spill and the largest punitive damage award slashing by the Supreme Court just 3 months ago that affected every citizen in Alaska. The Exxon Valdiz decision cost her state plenty. If she doesn't know about that and/or doesn't object to that, she's not only a ditz but a crappy governor.
So, in all of these (three) interviews, when has she NOT been herself? WHEN!!!!?!?!?!?
This must be Conservative pundits problem with her. They can't admit, and haven't realized, that they do not see her as Commander-In-Chief. Period. They continue to pound the table and say, "Let Palin be Palin." "Free Sarah!"... please! She HAS been Palin... this WHOLE TIME!
She's not going to be Ronald Reagan and John McCain is no Teddy Roosevelt. COME ON!
I will compliment the Gov. from Alaska. She is genuine and has shown us EXACTLY who she is this whole time. She's not talented enough to be someone else. She IS genuine enough to be her own genuine self...AND THAT SCARES US ALL TO DEATH!!!
Palin's problem is Palin. Not her handlers, not her advisors, not even John McCain. She is her own worst enemy.
McCain wont let her go... and he shouldnt... for our sake, he shouldnt. The more "Palin" Palin is, the better for Barack and Joe and the better for America.
The Elisa Dolittling of Sarah Palin is Must See TV but surely not a qualification to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

McCain/Palin THANKS BUT NO THANKS’08
Remember the good old days when Phil Gramm was in congress and John McCain was in the senate and they were in the midst of the Savings and Loan crisis.
The S and L scandal, which may look precious when compared to our present cascade of problems, isn't hard to understand, either. But it is impossible to take John McCain seriously on our current financial Armageddon since he was dabbling in the historic collapse of 747 S&Ls that occurred during Ronald Reagan's era. In the early 80s under the Republican president, congress deregulated the savings and loan industry in much the same way that Gramm made sure there were no laws hindering our current financial malefactors on Wall Street. S&Ls simply lobbied until they had less regulation and then began making rampant, unsound investments.
The guy who was going the wildest with financial freedom was Charles Keating, who headed up Lincoln Savings and Loan of California. Because the S&L industry had managed to get congress to increase FDIC insurance from $40,000 to $100,000 on deposits, the irresponsible investing of people like Keating began to put taxpayer insurance funds at great risk of loss. Keating placed money in junk bonds and questionable real estate projects and because so many other S&Ls started acting the same way the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB) began to push for a regulation that limited these dangerous speculative "direct" investments to 10% of an S&L's assets.
And Keating didn't like it; he called on a private economist named Alan Greenspan, who promptly produced a study saying that there was no danger in "direct" investments. But that didn't convince the FHLBB and as further scrutiny showed Lincoln Savings and Loan was making even more historically bad investment decisions, a federal investigation was launched.
So Keating called his home state senator John McCain.
McCain and four other US senators (known to history as the Keating Five) met with Edwin Gray, then chairman of the FHLBB. McCain had been hesitant to attend but had reportedly been called a "wimp" behind his back by Keating. The message to the FHLBB and Gray from the Keating Five was to lay off Lincoln and cool the investigation. Gray and the FHLBB did not relent but Lincoln stayed in business until 1989 when it collapsed with the rest of the S&L industry. The life savings of more than 20,000 elderly investors disappeared with the failure of Lincoln. Keating went to prison for five years.
Charles Keating was John McCain's pal. They met in 1981 and Keating dumped $112,000 in the McCain campaign bank accounts between '82 and '87. A year before McCain met with the FHLBB regulators, his wife Cindy and her father, according to newspaper reports at the time, invested about $360,000 in one of Keating's shopping centers. The Arizona Republic reported McCain and his wife and their babysitter took nine trips on Keating's private jet to the Bahamas to stay at the S&L liar's decadent Cat Cay resort. The senator didn't pay Keating back for the plane rides until years later when he was under investigation.
McCain wasn't found guilty of anything but bad judgment, which is an historic understatement. Republicans, who led deregulation of the S&L industry, delayed the bailout until after the 1988 election to make sure George H. W. won the White House. The cost to taxpayers for helping these 747 bad actors in the S&L industry was finally estimated at $1.4 trillion. If the bailout had begun in 1986 instead of after the presidential election, the cost would have been contained at $20 billion.
And now the Republicans who engineered our present crisis and got us into the S&L debacle of the 80s are before us saying the markets need regulation. No, actually, they don't need regulation. Why don't you Republican capitalists who believe in the free markets get out of the damned way and let them work and allow these various financial nuthouses be crushed by the weight of their own stupidity? When it is all over, we'll have sane and sober people create laws to make sure it doesn't happen again, assuming we survive this chaos.
Also, while you are handing out our tax money to idiots on Wall Street, save a little of the long green for the unemployed auto and construction workers and all of the other people who have lost their jobs because you were too stupid to notice what Phil Gramm was doing and you were convinced everything was going to be just fine because the markets work.
These, then, are the people -- the Republicans -- who want to run our government for four more years. John McCain isn't just one of them. He rides their jets. He takes their campaign donations. He makes them his campaign advisors. And he asks us to trust him. Rezko is old news but Keating 5 in fair game.

Joseph Romm of the Huffington Post wrote Sunday September 21st that Barack Obama or independent 527 organizations must report the Keating Five story, because “It foreshadows McCain’s ethical collapse, his coziness to fat cats, and his economic non-policy.”

It’s McCain Stupid !
John McCain is selling a Bridge To Nowhere with zero on the issues. He has resorted to dig deep into the mud to run his campaign. McCampaign is from end to end the most voracious pit vipers in the business. Those closest to him represent the worst that American politics have to offer. They are in fact the very authors of our country's doom, destruction and despair for the last 8 years and now they sit squarely in the middle of the McCain Camp. Today is official Black Monday and now Rove/ Schmidtz/ Davis/ Chenney/ Bush have found the real 3rd Presidency of G.W. Bush with McCain as the figurehead for a Sarah Palin presidency. Good old John McCain, he's 72, he"s 72, he"s 72, he"s 72, so there, I said it!
It mind-boggling that in the middle of one of the sleaziest campaign weeks in memory, McCain confirms that he is "the same person as [he] always was." We take this to mean that he was always the sinister, perverted, out-of-touch politician he is now. Won’t anyone say it’s McCain stupid?

McCain/Palin THANK BUT NO THANKS’08
John McCain is selling a Bridge To Nowhere and looks like America’s buying it. He has selected a vice presidential running mate that is unqualified, unvetted and unfit to lead a girl scout troop through Disneyland, and yet somehow he's elevated her to a position of massive power and importance and a heartbeat away from the Presidency. That’s just bonkers!
John McCain has been zero on the issues but has resorted to dig deep into the mud to run his campaign. He has staffed his campaign from end to end with the most voracious pit vipers in the business. Those closest to him represent the worst that American politics have to offer. They are in fact the very authors of our country's doom, destruction and despair for the last 8 years and now they sit squarely in the middle of the McCain Camp. McCain has become the figurehead for a Palin presidency. Good old John McCain, he's 72, he"s 72, he"s 72, he"s 72, so there, I said it!
Truth is America is tired of the Rove/Schmidtz/Davis campaign of lies, smears and division. Republicans says this election is not about the issues, its about personalities. Now they telling the media and you, they know they are lying and gonna keep right on lying. Sarah is not in this for you or America. And John McCain surely isn’t. Palin is in it for herself and now Rove/Schmidtz/Davis/Chenney/Bush have found the real 3rd Presidency of G.W. Bush. But what a challenge it must be for Team Obama to try to get into the head of voters whose mind can actually be changed by the kind of toxic dribble emanating from McCain, Palin and their surrogates.
Ms. Palin’s problem is not that she was mayor of a small town or has only been in the Alaska governor’s office a short while. Her problem (and now ours) is that she is not well versed on the critical matters confronting the country at one of the most crucial turning points in its history. It should be eye-opening that in the middle of one of the sleaziest campaign weeks in memory, McCain confirms that he is "the same person as [he] always was." We take this to mean that he was always the sinister, perverted, out-of-touch politician he is now. It is McCain stupid!

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos reports: Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a co-chair of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, said this morning Republican nominee John McCain’s age and history of melanoma are fair topics for political discussion.
“I think what we’re talking about is a reality,” McCaskill said in an exclusive interview on “This Week.” “Other people talk about his melanoma. We’re talking about a reality here that we have to face.
”On “This Week,” McCaskill pointed to McCain’s age to question his judgment in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate.“This is someone who's going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency,” said McCaskill. “All of us know it.
”In response, key McCain supporter Carly Fiorina accused McCaskill of “ageism.”
“I frankly find this disrespectful in the extreme,” she said. “I think this continued resort to ‘he's too old’ is desperation, frankly -- not to mention disrespectful to a very capable commander in chief.
”Last spring, Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean had said his party would avoid invoking McCain’s age during the general election.“I doubt we will bring it up in the election,” Dean said in April. “There is somewhat of a higher ethical bar on what we do. We don't have any Lee Atwaters or Karl Roves on our side.”
I’m no politician but I hope Dean lied. The only reason McCain's age is a legitimate talking point is that he picked Sarah Palin as VP. She is not qualified for this the position of Vice President! It is laughable that we even keep bringing her up for debate. She has demonstrated that she is mostly a empty dress.
I want to see how long the media continues to say well she did OK…not a homerun...she is bringing excitement...blah blah blah. Outing Palin and McCain as liars isn't enough ... We will Not vote for the Mob eating away the Republican Party. The double standard here is riveting.

Mr. Hannity, who co-hosts the Fox program with Alan Colmes and also hosts a popular radio show, is generally sympathetic to Ms. Palin. “She is a rock star, a rising star, a reform governor with more experience than Barack Obama ever dreamed of having,” he said the day she was chosen by John McCain. Ms. Palin’s second interview will be taped Tuesday in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will be shown on “Hannity & Colmes,” Fox’s 9 p.m. political talk show, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks but No Thanks.
Ms. Palin sat down for her first TV interview, with the ABC anchorman Charles Gibson, Thursday in Alaska and we are not watching. The three-part interview with Mr. Gibson continues today. Saturday’s are tough NOT to watch TV so just refrain from ABC. The Thanks But No Thanks media boycott is working. You guys are great and Gibson/Palin ratings are low. We have had enough.
Mr. Hannity’s interview will likely be a boon for “Hannity & Colmes,” just as Bill O’Reilly’s four-part interview with Barack Obama boosted the ratings for “The O’Reilly Factor” this week. Mr. O’Reilly’s 8 p.m. program has reached 4.3 million viewers through Wednesday of this week, about double his average audience size.

MAVERICK" TO MUDSLINGER
Harsh advertisements and negative attacks are a staple of presidential campaigns, but Senator John McCain has drawn an avalanche of criticism this week from Democrats, independent groups and even some Republicans for regularly stretching the truth in attacking Senator Barack Obama’s record and positions.
Mr. McCain has been increasingly called out by news organizations, editorial boards and independent analysts like FactCheck.org. The group, which does not judge whether one candidate is more misleading than another, has cried foul on Mr. McCain more than twice as often since the start of the political conventions as it has on Mr. Obama.
The McCain advertisements are devised to draw the interest of bloggers and cable news producers — but not necessarily always intended for wide, actual use on television stations — to shift the terms of the debate by questioning Mr. Obama’s character and qualifications.McCampaign has also been selective in its portrayal of Mr. McCain’s running mate, Ms. Palin. The campaign’s efforts to portray her as the bane of federal earmark spending was complicated by evidence that she had sought a great deal of federal money both as governor of Alaska and as mayor of Wasilla.
But her position was more like “please” before it became “no thanks.” Ms. Palin supported the bridge project while running for governor, and abandoned it after it became a national scandal and Congress said the state could keep the money for other projects. As a mayor and governor, she hired lobbyists to request millions in federal spending for Alaska. In an ABC News interview on Friday with Charles Gibson, Ms. Palin largely stuck to her version of the events.
This election is becoming a test not merely for the campaigns but also the press. McCain has concluded that he can run the most disreputable, dishonorable campaign imaginable because he has also concluded that the press will let him get away with it.
There is something sinister about the press's complicity in allowing McCain’s campaign coverage to feed hungrily on endless lies. It smacks of McCarthyism. Tell them to stop repeating stuff that isn't true. It's time for news organizations to stop being shills and for serious political reporters to stop being hacks. Mark Halperin and Campbell Brown have showed the way. We've had Enough Lies & Distractions. Too many lives are at stake.
