From what I have been reading, source Huffington Post, is that Obama is consistently missing out on the over 60 vote. What are elderly Americans most worried about? Health care coverage. Wouldn't be nice for older Americans, and at the same time peace of mind for younger Americans when we get old, to mandate universal health care for the over 70 Americans. Or at least make it really cheap to stay covered. People deserve it. They have worked long and hard their whole life, and most have sacrificed alot.
This is a message specifically for Jon Favreau, head speech writer for Senator Obama.
My name is Eric James. I am an expatriate living in Tokyo, Japan. I have been following the campaign rigorously. You, my friend, and you fellow writers are to be commended on the speeches that you have prepared for the Senator, but after witnessing the recent Nevada popular vote defeat I think that it is time that stump speech moves in a different direction.
I know you are probably asking yourself who is this guy, or thinking that I am just another over zealous supporter. Your apprehension is wise. I too would be. But know this, I asking nothing of you nor the campaign but just an ear. I am not looking for notoriety or fame. I am an American citizen who truly believes in the message and the ideas that the Senator stands for.
Blogging is the fastest way to get through. I think that it is time that the Senator start addressing, head on, the issue of race in this election and him being the most viable Black candidate in American history to seek the office of the President of the United States.
I have notice in the news that the White vote, especially in the south, is a vote that will allude the Senator in the upcoming primaries, and possibly, the general election. After Iowa, I felt such elation and pride for America and felt proud to be an American. Then New Hampshire came and things changed. I was hoping that it was just a fluke, but then Nevada.
This past week there was a lot of tit-for-tat on the issue of race in between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton. I was so disappointed but maybe it was inevitable. Why inevitable? For the same reason that Black Americans say that the Senator isn't black enough, that White Americans fear because he is. How to get around this?
I often wonder how to elevate the problems that humans have with not liking each other because they look different. My conclusion is: nothing short of a full scale alien invasion. You're smart. You know what I mean. But luckily, there is something that is almost equivalent to that conclusion that would explain race and the Senators stance in this campaign. And, at the same time strength his standing on national security.
No, I'm not talking about going at it Giuliani's way. But there is something to be said about our enemies around the world. If I were advising The Senator on what to say I would have him say this:
I would just like to say something to you and the American people. In the past week there has been a lot of back and forth on the topic of race. The Clinton campaign made some remarks that offended a lot of people. I can understand how those who were and are offended by the comments feel. I, also, understand how someone's words and comments can be misconstrued through
sound-bites and the media. For all that hoopla, I think that is was a blessing in disguise.
I think we should address the issue of race in this campaign and also in America for that matter.
I am an African American man running for President of the United States. Now for many of Americans my campaign is a symbol of pride, hope, and a new beginning for America. For others, my campaign evokes apprehension, racial biasness, and, to some extent, fear. I'm aware of that. I've been aware of that from the onset of my campaign and all my life.
America and Americans have traveled the same road but have different perspectives. When you look at me you see a Black man, but I am also an American...a God fearing American. I'm not asking you to vote for me because I'm Black. I'm asking you to believe in me because I believe that I have what it takes to lead this country into the new century and to charter a new chapter in American pride and dynamism.
There are a lot of forces, outside and within, our great country that will stop at nothing to bring us down. That will stop at nothing to end our way of life. Those forces don't care if you are a white, black, hispanic, asian, or native American. They don't care if you are Christian, Jew, Mormon, or even a Muslim American. The bottom line is they that hate us...one and all because we all share that one common denominator...AMERICAN.
We are all Americans. We may look different. Talk different. Worship differently. But we are all Americans.
Many times throughout our glorious history we have prevailed and excelled over great adversity. In just a short 230 years, we have gone from a handful of colonies to the worlds sole SuperPower. No other civilization has EVER accomplished so much in such little time. Proud to be American? You damn right.
We all know that America as a whole has a lot to atone for with its past. What country doesn't. We are not the only country that has racial inequalities. We're not the only country that has religious disagreements. Sexist inequalities. Alternative lifestyle inequalities. Crime. Homelessness. The problem is that this is America. This is supposed to be the country where those issues would and should be a non-factor. This is supposed to be the country were anything is possible. That includes peace among our fellow man. Some may call it false hope. Some may even call it a fairy tale. I call it America. Where the country where it's suppose to work. We are that beacon of hope and freedom. Of just justice. Our constitution dictates it.
We face a different world today. A world that we as Americans have ignored. There are countries that are up and coming and they are going to challenge and test us like we've never been challenged or tested before. And believe me, they will come at us from all sides.
We need to put away our fear and indifferences. Fear of each other. Fear of the unknown. If we as Americans are to survive this new world order and the challenges that it entails, then we are going to have to work together.
Racism is, and will tear this country apart unless WE ALL learn how to except one another for who we truly are...fellow Americans. The past is past. We are the new Americans. We are the ones that must lead this country in a new direction for a better tomorrow. We can't guide ourselves, nor this country, if we always have our heads focused on the past.
Divided we stand...Divided we fall. We must stand together as one nation. All Americans. Regardless of race, sex, creed, or religion. Together we stand...We shall not fall.eej
