The campaign has set a goal of 1,000,000 phone calls to voters in Indiana and North Carolina by May 6th. If you have not yet made calls, I highly encourage you to visit the action page and try it. Calling for Obama helps me stay connected to the campaign even when the focus is on distant states. I'm a teacher, so I can't travel around the US and go door to door for Barack, but I can pick up the phone on the weekend and call a few dozen voters in critical states. I won't rest until Obama rests at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave!
In the course of calling 20 Mississippi voters this afternoon, I talked to a life long Republican (and McCain supporter) who made me laugh out loud. He answered the phone by saying: "This had better be good." I explained that I was a volunteer for Senator Obama's presidental campaign and asked if Obama could count on his support in the primary. He said "no," because he is a life long Republican, and he is supporting McCain, but he said that if for some unholy reason he were prevented from voting for McCain, he would support Obama before he would ever consider voting for "that witch with ice water running in her veins, motivated by nothing but blind ambition, the daughter of the devil himself, Hugo Chavez in a pantsuit." I laughed. He said that he liked that Obama was willing to reach out to others to get things done, and he praised his "speachifying" abilities. "I haven't heard anyone speak like that since Ronald Regan." He went on to say that most of the people he had talked to were supporting Barack on Tuesday, and he hoped Obama would win big in Mississippi. Obama clearly has the respect of the opposition and will be able to transform that respect into progress for all Americans by reaching across the aisle and getting things done in ways Hillary can only dream of.
