Barack, please "Follow our money"

Joe Romm posted "Follow your money" August 2nd and one of the responders issued a call to action for Barack:

It’s not just our money we need to follow; in many cases, it’s also our oil. Just who owns the land (and seabed) these companies want to drill on? We do! The prices they pay for “leases” are nothing compared to their profits. With oil being pumped out on OUR land at $120+ per barrel, all those excess profits by right out to be the public’s, for the purpose of getting our country off oil and on renewables. Obama needs to start making this argument NOW.

Richard Heinberg (Post Carbon Institute) demonstrates the clarity we need from our political leaders in his "Response to Gore's Call for 100 Percent Renewable Power" -- some excerpts:

"Thus, if the climate crisis calls on us to renounce carbon fuels for the sake of future generations, the depletion and decline entailed mean that we must do so for our short-term economic survival. We will use fewer fossil fuels one way or another; but if we fail to adapt intelligently to the post-carbon era, the next few decades will see ever higher energy costs and continued high carbon emissions—leaving us with a ruined environment and a shattered economy, unable to face a future without fossil fuels."

"The solution to both climate change and fossil fuel depletion is to develop renewable sources of energy, use less energy, use energy differently—and to make this transition as rapidly as possible."

"We will need to learn the lessons of America’s historic triumphs. Achieving the goal of 100% renewable energy in ten years will take the strategy, effort, and determination exhibited in the New Deal, the Second World War, the Marshall Plan, and the Apollo Program combined. Post Carbon Institute believes America can and must realize this vision, and that it is both the responsibility and opportunity of this great nation to regain its pre-eminence as a leader in thought, innovation, and practice."

AND for what it's worth -- you never know who is connected to whom -- IF ANY BODY READING THIS HAS A CONNECTION TO A PRIME MINISTER, A PRESIDENT, A PAUPER, A POET, A PRINCE, OR A KING ... or anybody who might have the ear of Angela Merkel, please get a message to her that she and Mr. Obama need to respond to Dr. James Hansen's letter to her about coal-fired power plants.

Help Gore help Obama help Gore solve the climate crisis

July 17, 2008 - Al Gore invited every American to accept a challenge: "I ask you to join with me to call on every candidate, at every level, to accept this challenge - for America to be running on 100 percent zero-carbon electricity in 10 years. It's time for us to move beyond empty rhetoric. We need to act now."

Mr. Gore put forth a way each of us can help: "This is a generational moment. A moment when we decide our own path and our collective fate. I'm asking you - each of you - to join me and build this future. Please join the WE campaign at wecansolveit.org. We need you. And we need you now. We're committed to changing not just light bulbs, but laws. And laws will only change with leadership."

Did Obama accept Gore's challenge ... entirely?

May 25, 1961, President Kennedy established the goal of exploring the moon.

July 17, 2008, will either be a day to remember as the day America changed course on climate change, or a day America shamefully turned away from the challenge that Al Gore delivered eloquently and with passion: "I ask you to join with me to call on every candidate, at every level, to accept this challenge - for America to be running on 100 percent zero-carbon electricity in 10 years. It's time for us to move beyond empty rhetoric. We need to act now."

It is reported that Barack responded to Mr. Gore's challenge with "I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as president."

"100 percent zero-carbon electricity" is the central goal -- seems Barack is silent on that part. Read More »
