YES ~ WE ~ DID!!!!

What a life-changing journey this has been, and tonight, history will be made. Our dream has come true. Senator Obama will be our "official" Democratic Nominee for President of the United States of America. Wow, I like the sound of that! It's something I've known for months. It's something I've felt in my guts and in my soul. However, there's just something about hearing it "from the AP" that makes it certain - and makes it more real.

I was scared after Saturday's DNC meeting. Harold Ickes' tantrum, along with his threat, scared me. I didn't trust our opponent at all, and really thought she'd fight until Denver. I didn't think it would be over for a long time.

I certainly have my opinions about whether Senator Clinton should be VP or not, but I will save all my negative statements. More than anything, I trust Senator Obama and his judgment above all else, and I will support his decision.

I guess as I sit here and let it all sink in, I just have two words to say to Senator Obama: THANK YOU. Thank you for what you have already done to change this nation. Thank you for letting us live and believe that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Thank you for being brave enough to lead the free nation and the world. What a mess we are in, but thanks to you, we now believe and HOPE it will CHANGE - and it will!!!

It overwhelms me to think what he's done to better our nation in this short amount of time - I CAN'T WAIT to see what he will do when he has 8 whole years to work on it!! :) I am changed - my friends are changed - our community is changed. And, the journey isn't over. Thank you, Senator Obama.

Tonight, I will be surrounded by all my "Obama friends," all those folks that I've met through this journey, and the folks that will work beside me until November. We are determined to turn Indiana "Blue for Barack" in November! We will celebrate together this historic event as we share our memories, and shed a few tears, I'm sure.

I can't wait for the next part of the journey, as we work for November!!!

Reflecting on my journey so far...

So it's Mother's Day...

In years past, I have usually spent the day feeling sorry for myself, questioning God and wondering why I'm not yet a mommy. I never got it.

TODAY, however, has been a day of tears - but a different kind of tears - tears of joy. It's been a day filled with being truly content, peaceful, grateful, and EXCITED about where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going...

I never ever thought I'd be involved in politics - ever! What began in February as a group of us getting together here in Evansville to support Senator Obama, turned into an amazing journey that words cannot even come close to describing, a journey filled with experiences that leave me forever changed. It was hard, hard work. It was filled with 18-hour days, knocking on doors that got slammed in our faces, phone calls that often ended with "Don't call me again!" It was filled with sunburns, blisters, and hives, wet clothes from the rain, frozen toes from the snow, and anxiety from the BIG FREAKING DOGS in front yards in Pigeon Township!!! As I sit here today, the first Sunday in weeks that I'm not out knocking doors, I reflect on it all and realize I wouldn't trade a single second of it for anything in the world.

Wendy - my new friend. Man, she knows policy! She and I converted Don (a retired Marine) on his front porch. He began the conversation with, "I hate Obama - he's a MUSLIM." After 25 minutes of sharing the TRUTH with him - he wanted a t-shirt and a yard sign! And yes, he was gonna be voting for the Senator on May 6th.

Amy - the one who lived with band-aids on her toes but never stopped knocking doors with me every single time I needed her – which was EVERY night. She made Center Township ROCK!!! We changed minds! To her, I'm "Day Lynn…" because she says it sounds "exotic…" To me, she's "amazing," & nothing short of it.

Bad-Ass Riddle – I met her on the elevator at our very first meeting at the library. I knew immediately that she was a unique and very talented leader. Indeed, she proved to be with every single step she took in this journey. She got to hang out with Caroline Kennedy and Michelle Obama in Boonville, Indiana – who'd have ever thought???!!! What a cool MOM she is too, by the way! Hope she's enjoying her day today with her two fine boys.

Roger – the one who spent HOURS in his Jeep to get to the ville to canvas with us. I still can't believe he drove from Owensboro as often as he did. I loved knocking doors with him, because OMG, he didn't mess around. You knew you were gonna kill about 125 doors if Roger had the map in his hands – LOVED IT!!!!

Sarah – Center Township Field Organizer – I truly can't put into words what she means to me. Every night I walked into HQ, begging to go to the Pidge (Pigeon Township) and not wanting to go to Center Township, (aka Republican Land) but she would gently remind me how badly we needed to change minds in Center. So, reluctantly, Amy and I would grab our maps and head for Republican Land. What a gifted leader Sarah is – I will always have my memory of us driving to HQ on Monday, May 5th at 4:30am to catch a glimpse of the Senator, only to then get the unbelievable opportunity to meet him. WOW! What a life-changing moment.

Nathan – the most focused individual I've ever known. He had such a gift of tuning out the unimportant stuff and helping us focus on the true task at hand: "If we win Indiana, it's over." Those were his words to me the first day I met him, and it's those words that provided my motivation to keep knocking and keep calling when I was tired and wanted to rest. Thank you, Nathan – you're brilliant.

Aaron – Skaterboy – what a blast he was. I will always be grateful to Aaron for helping me find George – a memory I will forever cherish. He pushed his Knight Township people so hard, sometimes too hard. He will be another one who will do great things because he's an incredibly driven individual, and, OMG, so competitive. We will see him in D.C. soon, changing the world.

Erin – the high school student who amazed us with her boundless energy every single freaking day! She never stopped working for the Senator. Her parents have so much to be proud of – just wait and see – she will do great things, because she's already changed the world, at age 15.

Cleopatra – I couldn't wait to meet the girl from the music box steps. She left her "big law" job in LA to volunteer and return home to the Hoosier State to work with us. What a blast of energy she truly is. On the second night at the office, she and I bonded over a huge bag of plain M&M's. I knew we'd be friends forever. I will so miss her; however, I 'm going to LA this summer and she's taking me to get my Obama tattoo. True story.

Cheryl – the UE college student who never stopped – she "stormed the dorms" every chance she got. We will see her as part of NASA's team headed into space in a few years – mark my words.

Estell – the Rosa Parks of Evansville – I am forever changed because of her gut-wrenching stories of breaking racial barriers in our community during her 80 years on this planet. My day always went better when I got a hug from Estell. I love her and my respect and admiration for her can't be described.

DeLois – What a feisty one she is! Every time she found a great article about the Senator, (which was quite often!) you can be certain would make sure we saw it. She was an awesome force in the office and made sure we all got to eat some darn good food every single day!

Andrea – A marathon doorknocker who broke records every night she went out. She knows this community inside and out and man, could she sway some fence-riders! She and I convinced a rich Republican to vote for Senator Obama one night. (We discussed it as he polished his Porsche.)

Kristie - what an incredibly talented individual she is! She took the One Voice Rally and put Evansville on the map with our participation! She did a phenomenal job, despite the last-minute glitches when others dropped the ball. She pulled it off flawlessly and fired up the crowd just as the Senator would have wanted. She always – always – always had a smile on her face, even when she was exhausted.

George – As long as I live, I'll never forget George. See, George is a convicted felon who never thought he could vote. We got him to register to vote in early April as Wendy, Jay, & I found him on Walnut Street. He was very nervous about exactly what we were gonna do with the last four digits of his ssn. Well, he trusted us a little bit. On May 6th, Aaron and I found George & his friends hanging out on Walnut Street. Aaron asked, "Are you registered to vote?" George replied, "Yes, she registered me…" as he pointed to me. Then we got to take George and his girlfriend to vote FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!!! George was someone who had made some mistakes in the past, who never thought he could cast his vote and make a difference. All that changed on May 6, 2008.

Primary Night was filled with amazing memories. When the spread difference changed to 49% & 51%, tears of joy began flowing… Our chant went from "YES WE CAN!" to "YES WE DID!" We knew it was over – we knew we won. See, even though Hillary was declared the winner in Indiana, (by fewer than 2%) because it was so close and because of North Carolina, we knew it was OVER. In these last remaining contests, she cannot catch up. We knew that all along. We won – Senator Obama will be that name on the ballot on November 2, 2008.

What began as a journey to change hearts and minds, left our hearts and minds forever changed. I can't describe it, but we are different. I never thought I'd meet our next President. I never thought I'd speak in front of 7,000 people and tell them I'm forever changed. I never thought I'd meet the Rosa Parks of Evansville. I never thought I'd knock on over 1,000 doors to talk about the economy, jobs, and foreign & domestic policy! But see, God had bigger plans – better plans, for me.

Senator Obama speaks the truth – his campaign is not about him. It's about us – changing hearts, minds, and communities. That's what's happened in Evansville. That's just one of a million reasons why he will be our next President.

I'm getting ready for the next chapter in my journey, which will take me to Montana (I think!) in mid-June. I will be leaving Evansville for a few months to volunteer with the campaign to deliver a victory for Senator Obama on November 2, 2008. I have to do this; it's in my blood and I have to see it through to the end – when he and his family move into the White House.

What will I do after November? I have no idea. That's up to God. I'm taking a leave of absence from teaching for a year. So, no matter what job I have, I'm pretty sure it won't involve me in a school, and to that I say "Hallelujah!" It's in that daily effort of surrendering to God's will that has afforded me these indescribable blessings. I can only anticipate more blessings to come… I can't wait to see what's next. Yes ~ I ~ can! Yes ~ I ~ will!!!

49 NEW REGISTRATIONS and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 49 - That's how many we got in our first outing on Tuesday night! Happy Good Friday, Everyone! It IS a good Friday, by the way!!!! There’s so much excitement and a lot of good news from TEAM OBAMA I get to share… Let me first say that some of you will receive this more than once, because you are on more than one list serve, and registered on more than one site. I’m trying to reach as many folks as possible with this information. Thanks to the hard work of Roger, who complied the long list, I’m sending this email to all of you who gave us your name, phone number, email address, etc. at the last meeting. Some of you can’t make it to the meeting tomorrow, so I wanted to keep you in the loop!
We have gotten countless email messages from folks who ask, “How can I help?” Well, we’re so glad you’ve asked!!!

1. Voter Registration! Voter Registration! Voter Registration!

That’s our priority one right now. Brenda and Rodger have done an outstanding job and have done a lot of homework in this area and will have lots of information to share. We will have our schedule tomorrow so you can sign up at one of several locations starting this week to get folks registered. Next Saturday will be another big day for voter registration so we need lots of volunteers to help that day too! Important note: April 7th is the deadline for registration in Indiana.

2. Team Obama Headquarters!

Hopefully, you’ve seen the pictures on our sites of our new home on Main Street. There are some things you can do to help with moving in! First, don’t go there, yet! Let’s wait until we receive direction from the campaign staff on the move-in date. They will need office supplies, such as pens, paper, telephones, chairs, desks, etc. You can begin to collect some of those items, and we will wait to hear from them when to deliver them. If you have office supplies (not furniture) that you wish to donate, you can bring those to tomorrow’s meeting.

3. TEAM OBAMA!

RJ and I have had lots of conversations with several TEAM OBAMA campaign staffers and volunteers. They are so supportive of our efforts and appreciate what we’ve done. They have provided us tremendous insight into this process and we are so glad they will be here soon to work alongside us in this journey! I am so grateful for their expertise.

4. Supporter Housing

Some of you are already spreading the news, which is a good thing, that we need housing for staffers and volunteers who will soon be working with us here in the Hoosier State. This housing will be used at different points to house both campaign staff as well as out-of-state volunteers.

5. T-Shirts

T-shirts will be available one week from today – Friday, March 28th. We’ll be asking for a $10 donation for each t-shirt and that money will be donated to the campaign. Details will follow soon regarding distribution of the shirts.

6. Food/Hospitality Committee

We need to take good care of our volunteers at the headquarters, so we will be talking about food distribution. We would like to establish a hospitality committee to help get them started! More details will follow.

8. Indiana Action Team

If you haven’t already done so, please go to the official Barrack Obama web site and sign up for the Indiana Action Team. We need you on that list!

If you are able to come to the meeting tomorrow at 9:00 at the library, you can bring:

Lap tops with wireless Internet capabilities
Small Office Supplies to donate to the headquarters
Cleaning supplies (needed to clean the headquarters before everyone moves in!)
Markers, paint, crayons, poster board, etc. (for posters for "Show & Blow" events)
Your "Big Ten" (homework assignment from last meeting - each person's list of 10 committed Obama voters)

RJ got in to see our future President live! :)

YES, it's true! RJ made the journey to Plainfield today and GOT IN to see our future President at the Town Hall Meeting. Not only that, he got a pretty darn good seat down front! He didn't get to ask a question, (he tried!) but that's ok, HE WAS THERE!!!!
Channel 14 WFIE was there with us this morning to see him off and I just called them to let them know he actually got in. They will be doing the story during the 6:00 newscast tonight, so catch it if you can!
I just had to share the exciting news! I'm pretty sure I screamed into the phone when RJ said, "I got in!"
